I am beyond happy when I have friends that cover subjects that I'm super passionate about. You did a fucking KILLER job covering all the aspects of this game and showing why it's important. You are a gift GC.
Thank you Perry ;_;
Its kinda amazing how Kiryu isn't more well known in Kamurocho considering that he hospitalized the entire district 7 times
To be fair, he probably hits them so hard they forget who he is!
The games go between literally nobody knowing who he is to him being the greatest Kamurocho legend constantly
You don't know how happy I am to see you back, GC. And I can see that you still haven't lost your special touch. Once again, it's good to see that you're still playing positive my man.
I'll always play positively, and I'm glad to be back. Not back in full force, mind! But I figured it was time to get something new out.
Wait.....you gus figured Yumi was Haruka's mom immedietly?
I mean-! yeah yeah I knew too! Must be just memory since its a been a while h a h a
This is probably the best video on Yakuza 1 that I've seen. You're super underrated man, keep up the good work though.
Wow, thanks! I've seen some pretty good videos out there, so this is a high compliment!
I like this new style. It's still funny, informative, and better yet, entertaining; it's got the same charm and quirky pizazz the older videos have; further, it's even got some better editing and excellently timed jokes. It feels like an experimental piece, and one that succeeds.
Props, man. Never stop.
Ah yes, the "quest" called Life. What I really love about you channel is you look at the quality in games many people don't see, positivity. You made a great point about "humanity" and about life being a mix of serious and silly.
I also really love that I finished the game halfway before I got busy with other stuff and you very nicely summarized the game so I wouldn't have to play it :P
Anyways, glad see you back and healthy!
Welcome back, GC. Good thing I got Yakuza Kiwami to wet my Yakuza appetite.
Yeah. I beat Yakuza Kiwami, but now I have to finish off some stuff I didn't do in my story playthrough.
I started to write a Yakuza retrospective just to see where it went recently, and now I'm starting to be very suspicious Mr. GC Positive
Let's Collab on your favorite one.
YAKUZA 0 LET'S GO!!!!
I definitely subscribed for Dragon Quest, but this was super cool to watch! I'm excited to see more. :)
7 months in the clink, welcome back dragon of dojima
I love the title of this new idea for a series. I hope you continue this.
GC POSITIVE
Back with what I think is your best video yet. Well done. Like the idea of the new series.
THANK YOU ADAM! I figured it was about time to make *something* again haha
Holy crap its Jason Schwartzman
Pretty amazing you are mostly a Dragon Quest UA-camr and made a reference on this review... now we have a Yakuza game that's really inspired by Dragon Quest that the MC, Ichiban Kasuga, confirmed himself.
I DON'T MISS.
welcome back my dude! here from your first 100 subs
GC is seriously one of my favorite youtubers to this day. I'm glad you're still around.
Dude never stop making videos. I have never played a Yakuza game but your funny, extremely entertaining and informative style makes me want to watch any video you make regardless of what it's about. Also...that DQXI review is one of the best things I've ever seen on this site
O_O THANK YOU SO MUCH! I try to make sure I minimize on summary and emphasize takeaway and impressions so that people stay engaged. The Dragon Quest XI review was a hell of a thing to create, so I'm glad it stands on that pedestal for you! ^_^
Man, it's great to see you back GC! And with a series I always wanted to tackle too! I think I'm gonna start with 0 and move up to 6 with the Kiwami games (already have 3 and 4 but I'll wait.
Yakuza 0 was my introduction to the series. Its freakin' awesome man... not a big fan of beat em ups but this series gets it. Like the story telling and graphics and realisim, goofiness and humor. Its a blast.
I've been looking at this game for a while and your review really wants me to play it! The way you swap between talking about the good and bad is something i love and always seems to change your perspective. You did a fucking amazing job, well done GC!
I screamed when I saw a new video from you!
Love this saga. Glad you're back!
Wondered where you were, welcome back man, you were missed
Straps into seat. Also hi GC. Long time no see. Really love this series
This is a really fair review on yakuza 1 and im really glad i found this. No other video has made me wanna replay this more than this one and i think thats because you were able to talk for nearly 30 minutes without even mentioning the later entries in the series. Can't wait to watch some of your other videos!!
Every video in Questrospective is focused on taking a look at the game without making comparisons to a future that didn't exist when it was being made. I feel like this helps contextualize its production and overall execution of its mission statement.
Nice work my man keep it up!! Do you think you'll do with me other games?
Nice work this is me as well!!
Holy shit THE KING IS BACK
I know this is two years late but this video is absolute GOLD and I'm glad I was recommended it.
Thank you so much! :D It was a fun one to make, and ended up inspiring a lot of style changes and growth for me creatively.
@@GCVazquez I can see that! I've binged the yakuza videos on my hour long drives to school and your growth is astonishing! I'm really glad Razbuten shouted you out! I adore the yakuza series so I love listening to others that do as well!
Welcome back! I am so happy!!
Hell yeah!! GC 4 DAYZ!!
Love this format man, keep at it!!
Wonderful job on the video. I enjoyed it.
I love this, I'm just now playing this game for the first time. So good, so refreshing.
13:22 Rewatching this series now that I've played some Yakuza games myself and have more context and WOW this line is prophetic
GC covering DQ and THEN Yakuza, and then the Yakuza series mysteriously becoming a turn-based RPG inspired by Dragon Quest explicitly and specifically?????
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
@@GCVazquez you did this, and I'll never forgive you.
Still love you tho GC-Chan.
Thank god you are still alive.
Nice haircut.
Nice video man! Super clean editing, enjoyed it. Nice job in the tags as well ;) Glad to see you still posting.
HEY MAN! How’s it going, glad to see you posted. :D
GC, awhile back you convinced me to try a Yakuza game, and as I just finished Kiwami (and I am now surprised by how many of the cutscenes look similar to the original), I just wanted to thank you for introducing me to the rough streets of Kamurocho. I won't go to Kiwami 2 right away, though, but eventually...
I'm glad you liked it! ^_^
i like ya videos a ton, got hooked and watched all your dragon quest videos lol. keep up the dope vids fam.
It amazes me how the fuck you're able to say so many things naturally in a single take (in the live action parts) while many youtubers cut every 5s. Your communication skills are awesome
It's actually really hard to get those takes right LOL I spend about fifteen to twenty minutes trying not to flubb it.
@@GCVazquez Even then I guess fifteen to twenty minutes is not that much compared to others out there
Best review I've ever seen on the game, great job.
Appreciate that! It's sort of amazing how much different the later videos in the series are done compared to this one, but I'm still proud of it :)
Took me a bit to actually watch this not because I didn't have time but because my dumbass outright thought you played every Yakuza and did a mega video about it and I didn't want in depth spoilers for games I've yet to play.
But then I saw the timestamp and realized this is just the first, lol.
Intro position is grade A shit~ Nice camera set and I dig the off side position myself.
I'm notoriously bad at memorizing maps in games- it's only happened a select few times. And while I can't say I'm as adept at Yakuza's Komurocho as I'd like to be, considering I've played just Kiwami and Zero, I have a pretty damned good hold on that map despite not being a 1 to 1 mastery of it- so you're observation of the location being designed in a way to allow you to grasp it rings extremely true is someone as dense as myself felt it lol.
It felt like home in hours and I can't think of many locations I fell so deeply in love with, my lord.
Avoiding tissues in Yakuza is the true challenge.
And then you find a sidequest demanding you have one on hand.
Damn it.
Gotta be entirely real- the way Yakuza handles sidequests as hidden surprises blew me away- it made the world feel so alive and I adored finding them so much.
Striving to be better each day in a kindness sense, and give a bit more good to the world each day even when you can't do much some days. That's about the only way I can see living life as worth a damn and that first bit has been how I treat things for quite a damn while now.
Fantastic work, GC, and I'm beside myself with excitement to this particular retrospective. I really hope you have a great day, good luck on just about everything you've got going on, and remember to take your time enjoying things when you can.
To close my ramblin' hype holding- Play Kiwami for the retrospective (in it's appropriate slot chronologically obvs) because amazing game and the best intro I could have asked for.
Bad dubs out, good subs in. lol.
God that dub sucks, it's hilarious as hell, but my god that dub sucks lol. I will admit- it's unique enough to add a sense of value to the english version beyond the obvious merits of being the first (and being worth a play simply for that perspective). It's a nice extra layer to the first entry for the west, but my fuck it sucks lol.
And seriously, GG, GC.
I am definitely going to play Kiwami once I get to it chronologically- gotta see how it compares/it's way too good to pass up, I'll bet. Thank you for always giving me your input, Red! I'm always happy to see you around
In retrospect (heh) it "might" be only worth putting Kiwami and (likely) Kiwami 2 as a footend of Zero? They are largely the same story as their original versions, just translated more faithfully and using the Zero engine.
Just after thinking on it for a moment I realized it might be a bit too much repetition unless you made it a short video for the remakes, especially since there's likely just going to be the 2 remakes anyway (unless, of course, your remake videos went in depth into how the changed mechanics influence the telling of the tale or experience etc, could probably get a lengthy bit out of that).
And I'm always happy as hell to see your developed content, man- and swing by the stream when I can as well- always a pleasure and have a good one :P
Hes back, my boys back
Looking forward to your thoughts on DQ11.
Criminally underviewed content, right here
Thank you! ^_^
MOAR!
Imagine fighting Mr shakedown in Yakuza 1
Missed your videos
Long time friend.
This is gonna be amazing.
Boy I have started looking to your videos, they are great, you should do a review of DQ 10, 11 and the remakes of 7 and 8
Weird to think that the series will now go on as Like a Dragon in the West.
Now it goes Yakuza 1, Yakuza 2, Yakuza 3, Yakuza 4, Yakuza 5, Yakuza 0, Yakuza 6, Yakua Like a Dragon, Like a Dragon Gaiden, and Like a Dragon 8 Infinite Wealth
Ayy I'm gald your cg
This guy is beautiful ❤
17:29 I knew that he sounded like joker
I bought Yakuza 0 a year ago on Black Friday, and I think this video got me to want to play it. Tho now I wonder if after 0, should I play the original or Kiwami?
Yakuza was a series that didn't interest me for the longest time until i watched some gameplay of Yakuza Zero and it looked like fun. Lucky for me I now own Yakuza Zero by mere chance but I have yet to start playing it. Good video though. Makes me a bit more curious about the Yakuza series.
So that Dragon Quest XI is a pretty sweetass game, huh?
Oh shit, was that Yakuza essay in those script-writing streams used for this video?
Nice video
From playing 0 and having started kiwami I can confirm I know where the parks are
Isn't it great? You always know where you are!
@@GCVazquez I never really think about them because I have the whole city mapped out in my head, I don't even know my own house that well
I struggle the most with finding the parks
Starting out, the parks are the hardest to remember- and I still confuse one for the other a lot!
@@GCVazquez I only know public park 3 because of the save spot
You should do a judgement retrospective
That's happening!
I'm watching this (and after this the Yakuza 2 one) to refresh my Memory before watching the last one and... I think you missed (or misunderstood) very very important point about Nishiki and the spiral he went down into. He's not "Future Kiryu", far from it. Kiryu definitely wouldn't end up that path if he didn't swap places with with Nishiki because he doesn't have the inclination for it. Nishiki is simply... Nishiki because he didn't have Kiryu at his side to help him make the right decisions, and the pressure he felt when everyone reminded him on how much better Kiryu was simply made him crack.
Honestly, I think what I said and what you're saying can co-exist. This really depends on who's perspective you're looking at the narrative from. If we take it as a story about Nishiki, we can see he loses his guiding light. Without Kiryu to be a better influence, he falls into that hole- but it's *because* he loses Kiryu that Nishiki does so. Nishiki kills a man, Kiryu takes the fall, Yumi disappears, and Nishiki loses everyone he loves the same way Kiryu loses them. But where Kiryu ends up with Haruka, that innocence restored, Nishiki has nothing. From Kiryu's perspective, he sees Nishiki as the man he would have been had they changed places that night. We more or less know Kiryu's capable of climbing the Yakuza ladder and can be ruthless given his introduction before taking the fall.
Nishiki's and Kiryu's tattoos, a Koi and a Dragon, represent an old Japanese folktale. About Koi fish trying to swim upstream a waterfall, being mocked by demons all the way through, until one of those Koi gets to the top of the waterfall and the gods turn them into a Dragon as recognition for its efforts. I like to think, in Yakuza's case, that Nishiki represents the Koi Kiryu begins his journey as, and upon realizing how different he and Nishiki are after the events of the game, earns the title of Dragon by defeating this old perception of himself.
He's not "future Kiryu" so much as "Kiryu had his life played out differently." The comparison isn't as much about Nishiki being crazed and conniving so much as about him being saturated in the underworld he spent ten years climbing through.
@@GCVazquez Eh... I see how you may have formed that opinion, but I disagree. Kiryu has already passed the "Koi" phase. I guess way back before the game begun (I am ignoring Zero because prequel doesn't really count for Vanilla Yakuza) he was already a Dragon. That's why he wouldn't have ended up as Nishiki. He was already a complete person with a defined personality (and definitely wouldn't have made some of the decisions Nishiki did). And I definitely disagree with him being ruthless. If we look at the entirety of the game, excluding Jingu (general rage) and Nishiki (clash of ideals) he always acted in self defense, since the prologue with the really first battle. In prison? Self defense and so on. I'm pretty sure 9/10 times, someone started the fight with "Die, Kiryu" or some variant.
4 years later, I need to know...
Whats the time to Boat in Yakuza?
Honestly? I'll say maybe 10-12 hours!
Wasn’t there just a dragon quest 11 vid?
Yes there was! There was a big error in the audio and I had to take it down and fix it. Export and upload times for this one is somewhere in the ten hour mark, so the fixed version is releasing tomorrow morning!
I saw that! where is it? where did you hide it?!
The export had a MAJOR error in it, so I have to export and upload again, which is gonna take at least another 10 hours. We'll try again tomorrow!
@@GCVazquez no prob, I'll be here :^)
Are you going to cover yukuza 7 when it comes out.
I've never played these...at least the first game but never really finished or progress much to it..
Ha! This dub!
Do dragon quest 11 already!
*throws wrench from off-screen* I'M WORKIN' ON IT!
Is it as good as 6? Until I see your review I’m gonna assume you think it’s as good as 6. 😄
@@dylanhoyt1863 it's my favorite one now

10:44 But is it as good as *"GET MILK!"* tho?
I haven't played 6 yet! But when I do WE WILL SEE Edit: OH WAIT THIS IS IN FOUR! MAYBE.
@@GCVazquez you still read comments to your older vids? That's devotion and i respect it. I think you just earned yourself a sub!
But where is dragon quest 11?
It’s a borderline crime to play theses games in English
