I finished the original trilogy on the Switch last year and 1 and 3 have a place in my heart, 1 is simple but fun and challenging enough and 3 is charming with the plot and the roleplaying aspect, I made the characters based on my friends and girlfriend.
DQ3 on GBC was my first Dragon Quest game when I was 11. I enjoyed the hell out of it but got my ass kicked during the mid game every playthrough. Eventually ended up beating it about a year ago. Definitely one of my favorite entries in the series despite the difficulty. Great story, music, graphics, and class system. Feels somewhat light on content compared to modern DQ games but to my it symbolizes the quintessential DQ experience. Just a solid game all around that had a lasting impact on the series. Love your vids man!

@@GCVazquez yes I am definitely going to pick that up! I just finished DQ7 on 3DS which was one of my least favorites so far. But now I'm onto DQ8 finally, and then DQ11 after.

There is a fan translation of the SNES remake which is amazing. The sprites are a lot better than the GBC version since it was made in the DQ6 engine and carries over the improvements made by the other SNES titles. The GBC version does have one extra dungeon though, plus the monster medals if you like collecting them. Shame we never got a proper release of this version so you can only play it in English with a patched ROM on an emulator.
This game really stepped up the series for sure. It's my favorite entry of the NES games for sure, with 4 being a close 2nd. 5 is probably my absolute fav of all the 2D DQ games tho.
Personally not a fan of these games. Just not fun to play. But damn I gotta respect just how much we owe to Dragon Quest. They started so much of what we "expect" outta games (not just jrpgs, either) these days. And that ending was incredible. After what seems like somewhat of a mess the first 2 seemed, that twist payed off on so many levels! Sorry so long and I know this is an old video, but I just found it so thank you. I like this retrospective series so far. Will watch more of your stuff.
I lost it when I beat Zoma as a kid and found out you were the hero from 1. I played Dragon warrior 1 on NES in middle school and couldn't find 2 anywhere. When I read in Nintendo Power they were re-releasing 3 I was so excited. I played it nonstop. I enjoyed the first game well enough but it was 3 that cemented my love for it. I would then play 9 on the DS and stupidly miss out on picking up 4, 5, and 6 remakes. I definitely picked up 7 and 8 though.
Fantastic Dragon Quest series my friend. Some of the best ROG related videos I’ve seen on Tube. As content creator myself I appreciate how much time and effort you put into each video. Bravo!
They may have called him Loto in the GBC release, but to me it will always be Erdrick. As a matter of fact every time I play a DQ game I name my character Erdrick...except in part 3 where you're not allowed to for obvious reasons. Yeah that's a thing in the NES version of DQ 3...try it...it will reset the name every time.
theres a good amount of games that have changeable job classes (most of which are indie games that are forgettable) FF1 you can choose the classes of your party at the start i wouldn't enjoy these games but that was a nice ending
I always loved that! DQIII is one of my favourites and I liked the similar system in DQIX. I love an RPG that tells a story about the world and lets the game narrative be the story of the characters. That said, I get how that may be hard to do right or may not be everybody's cup of tea.
Some will probably say "Well X game did that too!". Well kids, this game did it first. It did literally EVERYTHING first, and it does it better than most games do it even today.
I'm so glad I got to see this before I left for the next few weeks, another great episode. I find it interesting how similar the UI in Dragon Quest III and the first Pokemon games look. Despite it being 8 years later, they are almost identical.
Adam McDermott You'll probably make it back in time for the next one too! The GBC release of DQ3 was only about four years after the first gen Pokemon games, so there's either a built-in template or Gamefreak made such a good UI that TOSE (the guy's that adapted DQ3 to GBC) couldn't come up with anything else. Rest of the sprite work is very Pokemon as well. Could be that the GBC makes it difficult to deviate from that style. All this talk about the differences between the ports of these games is starting to breed another video in this mini-series. Might do it once I finish VII!
Great set of videos! You're right, Dragon Quest 3 really earns it's own video. Finding out you are the epic hero at the end was mind blowing to me back in the day.

Yeah, 1 and 2 had a functionally different version of Zoom originally. Zoom as we know it began in 3. Re-releases of both might have updated them to more modern conventions, but before 3, it was a very limited spell that didn't function like the Zoom we have today.
Dragon Quest 3's my first Dragon Quest game and I lllloooooved it. I remember ripping the box open the minute I walked out of the K.B. Toys and playing it all around the mall while my mom shopped. It's gotta be one of the earliest RPGs I touched; totally formative of my video game tastes today.
That's only accurate in post-renaissance settings. In the real world, it was first used as a term of address for a monarch by Charles V, who felt that 'highness' wasn't great enough for his position as Holy Roman Emperor, after which it caught on amongst other European monarch. Prior to this 'Your Highness' was the standard for all monarchs.
GC I’ve been watching all your dragon quest videos sometimes multiple times out of boredom in the background because I’m interested in the series but idk where the fuck to start even if you say 8 is best and 1-3 contain important elements, but old games suck should I just play 8?
@@Συναισθησις It's cause the Android/iOS port was based off of a version made for some early 2000s Japanese phone. The hardware in the phone was pathetically weak and it had very little storage so the game got cut down to work on it. Not to mention the cut content from the GBC remake. It kind of sucks cause that means there isn't really a definitive version of DQ3 to play. The SNES version has the most personality, the GBC version has the most content, and the mobile version is the easiest way to play and has the most QoL changes.

Pretty good review of my favorite RPG of all time. I do find the ending of Erdrick/Loto being a title name in DQ3 kinda skeptical as it implies that there was someone within the Dragon Quest worldbuilding canon named Erdrick/Loto who’s heroism was so legendary his name became a title in it of itself. So yes while the Hero in DQ3 isn’t literally named Erdrick/Loto, he’s still Erdrick/Loto to me in terms of working his way up into becoming a hero that brought the story of DQ1 and 2 gawking over the who/what/how/when/where of Erdrick/Loto to a close. Perhaps a next Dragon Quest game might reveal who this Erdrick/Loto originally was before his name became a title name? Where did such a term even come from that defines “Legendary Hero” within the context of the Dragon Quest worldbuilding canon?
I will say you are playing the infirior version, the snes one considered the best version, because honestly the music graphics and everything else makes it a master piece, but disregarding that little known fact and knowing getting a translated copy is a bitch, 11/10 review and video, dragon quest is probably one of the least appreciated amazing series here and it's good to see how much you care and put time into the review and I can see why you love each version as I have, somewhat unfortunately, played through several versions of 1,2 and 3 so fenominal work and keep it up

The SNES version of this game is exactly like the GBC version, minus one of two bonus dungeons (and one is enough), but the sprite work and music on the SNES version is SO good. And opt out of playing the NES original. Like I said in my video: They couldn't fit all the intended features into the original release, but they did manage to put those into subsequent releases as well as use a lot of convenience features that make the experience way smoother.
+GC Positive Just finished playing through the SNES version, that was definitely a good game :D I had forgotten about some of what was mentioned in this video, not to mention I've never played any DQ game besides the game boy incarnations of the monsters series- so it was a nice blind run. Impressed by how easily you could figure out what to do by talking to NPCs. Pachisi is cool as heck. Keeping comments from rambling isn't nearly as cool. Keep up the great work, man. YOU are amazing.
Seda Raybrandt i know what he meant, it just that i have been playing dragon quest games for years and that was the first time i ever heard the phrase.
Yeah I fucked that up. ^^; IX is the only one in the series I haven't played so far, and I just assumed by box art that it had an established party. Thanks for calling this out to me though! I didn't even notice I messed that up!
Erdrick/ Loto are merely titles like king or Joker. Their real name is... whatever you want it to be(now for some fun facts, Loto is the name given in the GB Color remakes and is a more closer translation of the Japanese name Roto. Erdrick is from the first release of Dragon Quest over in the states and worldwide when it was called Dragon Warrior and is the name most used. Hopefully that makes sense :/)
You really also need to do a far better job researching the differences between the original NES entry and this remake that you're actually featuring here. Many of the things you mentioned in this game were not present in the original, such as the Pachisi tracks. This remake actually has a whole bunch of additions to it that the original NES version did not have, such as the personalities, tons of new equipment, the Thief class (An amazing additon for those who change classes a lot due to their fantastic MP growth), etc.
Once again, if you bothered to do some research, you'd know that there IS in fact a way to raise both Magic AND Breath spell resistance. There are actual spells in the game that do both of these things, as well as equipment that reduces the damage you take from both. Research man, do your research when you do a review!
DQII was better constructed and polished then DQI? You must not have played NES version of it.... It was a huge mess and devs apologizes for it lol. Although, the third installment was the best apology they could offer. Nice channel btw.
That's actually not true at all about magic power. It is not at all based on your stats and is actually random between a set value. It will never do any more or less damage than a predetermined amount. This is only the 2nd video in this series and already each one has had a pretty big bit of misinformation. You might want to study this stuff a bit more man.

GC Positive I gotcha then, I'll grab one now so I have it ready when I finish my current run!
+GC Positive Just finished playing through the SNES version, that was definitely a good game :D
I had forgotten about some of what was mentioned in this video, not to mention I've never played any DQ game besides the game boy incarnations of the monsters series- so it was a nice blind run.
Impressed by how easily you could figure out what to do by talking to NPCs.
Pachisi is cool as heck.
Keeping comments from rambling isn't nearly as cool.
Keep up the great work, man. YOU are amazing.
+redphienix Hey man ramble all you want, I do it all the time!
"time to boat" lol
He means the time you get to have a ship.
Seda Raybrandt i know what he meant, it just that i have been playing dragon quest games for years and that was the first time i ever heard the phrase.
Back here once again after the lievstream
2D-HD IS THE FUTURE
Loto=Low-Toe
0:33 What about IX?
Yeah I fucked that up. ^^; IX is the only one in the series I haven't played so far, and I just assumed by box art that it had an established party.
Thanks for calling this out to me though! I didn't even notice I messed that up!
Well technically you were correct since you said "from the very beginning of the game."
So, was his name Erdrik before it became Loto? I need to understand before he gets confirmed for Smash Bros.
Played the super Famicom remake. Best version by far.
I personally prefer to have a harem
Very hard to watch because of skewing the aspect ratios
Rise is best girl, don't let anyone tell you otherwise!!!
Slightly distracted by the use of my name for your Cleric.
You have a very good name.
I remember being a 5 year old kid with a game boy color and my dad got me a game called Dragon Warrior 3, I was so confused lol
3 was my favorite
YOU NEED A COMPUTER
I WANT ROOM SERVICE.
Once again, if you bothered to do some research, you'd know that there IS in fact a way to raise both Magic AND Breath spell resistance. There are actual spells in the game that do both of these things, as well as equipment that reduces the damage you take from both. Research man, do your research when you do a review!
Do a DQ8 review bruh
Oh that's comin'! Currently in the process of replaying it and writing things down.
DQII was better constructed and polished then DQI? You must not have played NES version of it.... It was a huge mess and devs apologizes for it lol. Although, the third installment was the best apology they could offer.
Nice channel btw.
I thought dq 3 was Edrick...who tf is Ortega
His dad

That's actually not true at all about magic power. It is not at all based on your stats and is actually random between a set value. It will never do any more or less damage than a predetermined amount. This is only the 2nd video in this series and already each one has had a pretty big bit of misinformation. You might want to study this stuff a bit more man.
Named my character L*T*
Call me crazy but I like Dragon Quest 3 better than Dragon Quest 8.
