I think Yakuza: Kiwami is the biggest sign that Dead Souls wasn't just tossed aside. lol
The whole Zombie Majima mission was a pretty nice callback, and if anything, it shows the developers weren't ashamed of making it

Like A Dragon was though out as a literal joke, and yet it became one of the best turn based RPGs in playstation. These people really know how to get things done.

That Majima opening cutscene is the single best cutscene in Yakuza
Everything Majima in this game is the best Yakuza has ever been, and I stand by that.
This is the game that turned me on to Yakuza because I was able to find it cheap years ago. I get why it's not "the best", but I think all games require a certain mindset to play. Dead Souls made me fall in love with Kiryu, Majima, and just the way Yakuza structures itself. The general combat style, the way one city is brought to life, the realness of karaoke and hostess clubs, last but now least... how damn SILLY the series is.
It seems that so many gamers judge games based on what they aren’t, rather than what they are?

I honestly wish RGG Studio would make a Remake of Dead Souls. It would run really well for PS5.
Originally it was gonna be aliens instead of zombies, and Nagoshi recently expressed interest in making a Yakuza game where they fight Aliens, so I'm thinkin: "Maybe we get a Dead Souls 2 instead of a Remake of Dead Souls 1."

That'd genuinely be the best thing that could happen for fans of the series. I know Dead Souls isn't super great or anything, but the spin-offs of Yakuza are very fun in their own right and I think they'd be appreciated here! Maybe released as a package?

I read somewhere that Dead Souls was the reason why SEGA nearly gave up localizing then-future Yakuza franchise for the west because DS bombed. I doubt we ever get to see it ported to modern console; let alone PC.
@@leedlefly I feel this, but I also think SEGA is pretty open to porting and re-releasing just about anything onto PC these days. I also think RGG is aware of why the game didn't do so well in hindsight, and I think if the technical issues can be solved, Dead Souls makes for a very fun game newer fans would probably get a kick out of playing!

Yakuza: Dead Souls is an amazing game. I bought it without a second thought back when it released and finished it all while having a big smile on my face. Honestly, I am a bit sad to see that this game never released on other platforms or got the remaster treatment...

Played Dead Souls recently and really liked it myself. I think part of the problem was at the time of its release the market was oversaturated with Zombie media. Now that it has been a while since it has been like that, It is easier to be objective about it.
This game just needs to be ported to more systems. Every mainline game is on game pass now and that alone made this series even more popular. Dead Souls is limited to the PS3 which a lot of people don't have anymore.
Just release it on PC and if it does well then that's a sign to do more with it.

This was the second yakuza game I played for the ps3 after yakuza 3 and I loved it. I thought it was a pretty well made game. It had plenty to do and was a fun little way of killing zombies. I remember in kiryu's chapter before he got his sniper. He tried to punch the zombies.
Poor Kiryu is such a saint, he's a zombie apologist until he realizes he can't punch them to death.
Saddened you didn't talk in depth about the side mission with Daigo, but I guess it'd be massive spoilers ;)

Okay so, how do we KNOW that Dead Souls isn't canon? I mean, there's nothing in the plot that contradicts any of the other games, right? There's no real reason why there couldn't have been a zombie outbreak between 4 and 5 because everything is fixed by the end credits.
Yakuza had never been a realistic series, so why isn't Dead Souls considered canon?

I still think this is a fantastic game and I will die on this hill. The characters acted like they were supposed to and even though the premise was weird, it was executed well within the context of the series. It took itself serious when necessary, didn't when it wasn't and followed the overall style and formula as much as it could while breaking from the mold. Of the End / Dead Souls is no less valid as a spin-off than Kenzan and Isshin.

ngl I'm a huge Yakuza fan. Have played majority of the games outside of the ones that weren't released in the states and 7. I've seen Dead Souls and never thought to try it. Seemed like a random game made to add to the zombie line-up but after watching this video I changed my mind. Great job bro

I'm glad this game could bring someone more joy than me. Admittedly it was more of a roadblock on my way through the Yakuza series marathon I was doing after discovering 0 and falling in love, so the stark changes, slowdowns, and comparative repetitiveness in combat flavor when stacked up against a complex beat 'em up sort of threw me off enough to just want to get through it.
Maybe if I'd given the substories more of a chance I'd have enjoyed it more, but the few that I did didn't grab me so I assumed nothing else would too, but there are some genuinely good ones you listed I would have liked to see.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember aiming was done by holding a button and moving the left stick, which also really messed me up in today's current game climate.
(Also my brain goblins tell me every game is going to be like the first Metroid and if you use a single bullet from any weapon for which you don't have infinite ammo you'll be screwing yourself over later)

Okay so, I HIGHLY agree this game is underrated.... I've been playing the Yakuza games in chronological order.... So 0, Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, 3, and 4....
But, decided to take a detour to this game.... It's actually REALLY good.... And makes me wish Ryuji lived through 2.... I'm gonna miss him.

Literally finished the game a few hrs ago, its amazing. Spent 20 hours and i will totally be 100% the game in the future! Ive made it my goal to play every game in the series and this one has been my fav so far (ps3 and zombie game lover bias). Many say it runs bad or its just not good because of no ports but they're missing out!!!!

Dead Souls was my entry into the series last year. I platinum’d it, then played 0, Kiwami & Kiwami 2 on Xbox. 100%d them and now I’m on 3 with 4&5 ready to play 😁

I understand it’s a tall order to ask for this possibly being remade one day, but if Ishin is finally gonna be given to us after all this time, maybe one day Dead Souls will as well. But the future of Yakuza is looking really bright for sure.

Came back to this video after finishing Dead Souls 2 months ago back in March and i have to say i didnt expect the game to be this fun, it may have its flaws like the 30 fps cap and the clunky controls but this game has to be one of my top 3 yakuza games as of now.
It's wild how much fun it is despite its flaws, right?
Basically, this is kind of game that needs Kiwami remake (not on Dragon Engine, however). Or, even better, proper PC port with remastering. There is many good content, from substories to mechanics, and storyline, despite being quirky and strange even by Yakuza standards, is good. It even expands Yakuza worldbuilding - for example, being able to explore Kamurocho Hills, that ongoing theme from Y2-Y5, is just great. And interactions with characters, which didn`t interact in main game enough (for example, Ryuji with Kiryu, Majima with Akiyama, et cetera.), is cool. While isn`t canon, it can expand characters, even in "what if" way.
Yes, this game was criticized a lot, but most of criticism were about FPS and aim system - which, mostly, technical limitations, and could be fixed.
And, if theoretical remake, it totally should have drinking scene like Yakuza 6/Yakuza Kiwami 2. With Kiryu, Majima, Akyiama and Ryuji.

I watched ray(brownman) play this and felt he was unnecessarily harsh so I decided to try it and really enjoyed the game. my biggest complaint was upgrading one of the first pistols just to find out that majima can't swap out his starting pistol, or shotgun

Thank you for this. I'm a huge Resident Evil fan and since I started playing the Yakuza games in order a year ago, I've been excited about this game based on the idea that it would be two of my favourite things combined. But there was always this nagging worry that the detractors were right and it would be terrible despite sounding like the best thing in the world. Seeing as most detractors didn't seem to be fans of what Dead Souls was trying to do, I've maintained hope. This video has helped me to become excited about Dead Souls once again. My doubts are dispelled. I am ready to play as Majima and shoot zombies for 100 hours (interspersed with karaoke and mahjong of course).
DO IT! If you like goofy shenanigans and the Yakuza mini-games, this is just as good as any other Yakuza game.

These games have so much stuff in them, it's astounding. So, two weeks later, we are finally leaving behind Yakuza 4 for now, and the first couple hours of Dead Souls have been glorious. Not disappointed at all. I firmly believe that everything people dislike about it is down to it taking some getting used to to control it well. But do that and it's a great time.

I disagree. Yakuza Dead Souls was bad because it had bad politics like when Haruka discusses that we should abolish wage labour when it is what Japan (Nipon) is built upon. Also, it is in favour of big government which we all know is what Stalin did. Akiyama also hands out money to peasants instead of investing in apple which would have helped to get iphones to children in the Central African republic. Kiryu also asserts that the zombie apocalypse is a result of capitalism run amok, which is not based, nor is it redpilled. It is because God himself was fed up with the antics of leftists that he unleashed this. In summary, Yakuza Dark Souls is shite and it should be banned. 10/10 Best Game Ever
I've already been wanting to play this but then I saw cybernetic gun arm and majima with a shotgun and now I have to.
Its not just a shotgun, its a UNIQUE shotgun only Majima can use
I was sold the moment I saw a man with a minigun arm in the the thumbnail. If Final Fantasy VII and Megaman have taught me anything, its that games where characters have guns for arms tend to be pretty good.
This one is a lot of fun! If you play it natively on PS3, prepare for some heavy slowdowns towards the end though!

I wonder sometimes if people even realize they're talking about the worst game in a really, really, incredible video game series. It's far from flawless but I intend to finish it someday along with the rest of the series. Besides, you got to play as Majima years before 0 and Kiwami 1. Sometimes "the worst" of something is still a lot better than quite a lot of everything else.
I think I agree! Dead Souls is definitely encroaching on mediocrity outside of its own series, but I think there's a lot of fun to be had with a silly game like it!

I come here to this video again after played the game, and all I can say that is the one the best Yakuza games I ever played, ( I beat, 0 1, Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, 3 ,4 ,5 ,6 ,7 and dead souls) and is really a great game, if you like zombie games and don´t know the yakuza series you can still play the game and if you don´t like like shoothing games and just like yakuza I am still sure you will love the game. I did literally 100% of the game e got the platinum for the game, I really recommend this game to anybody, By the way GREAT VIDEO man, I did´nt know the game until I saw you video.

This convinced me to finally grab Yakuza: Dead Souls, well that and finding out the PS3 is REGION FREE and the UK version is way cheaper.
My favorite things about Dead Souls were many.. But of them were:
1 - The variety of zombies.. Aside from the generic variety such as normal, exploding, and screamer zombies.. We had Monkey Boy.. Man I hated that one, we had Meatheads and other ones like the flying elf thing and the terrifying stone-like monster.
2 - the way you can feel the threat of the zombies.. Aside from the streets being filled to the brim with countless zombies.. Kamurochu streets being in ruins.. And the chaotic music.. The zombies slowly breach the walls and invade more and more of the map.
3 - Being the first western Yakuza game where you play as Majima and Ryuji.
On the topic of music, this game's OST is great.
Return To Nothingness is underrated as fuck and I hope people can agree with that
We also must not forget about the Daigo-Majima sub mission in this game. Yakuza humor as his finest!

It’s a shame Dead Souls was recently confirmed to not be getting a rerelease anytime soon, since it’s now officially stuck on the PS3 with prices on physical copies getting higher as time goes on. Here’s hoping they change their mind sooner than later.

@@GCVazquez Actually, I've heard from someone that Sega is interested in localizing Kenzan and Isshin.
This game is a no brainer for a digital PC release or game pass. I think between the HD Collection, 6 coming soon, and Judgment too there will be a lot of people who missed this and would be much easier to market to than in 2012.

If it weren't for the terrible boss fights in Kiryu's chapter, I would love Yakuza: Dead Souls. Everything about this game is solid Ryu ga Gotoku except for the really, really bad boss fights at the end.
I had the secret weapon, but I imagine with the more conventional kit it might be a chore, yeah!

@@GCVazquez wow I actually found a lot of listings on Amazon. New in box offers are $70+, but I've made dumber buys before. Just gotta get a PS3 though, that's the only PS I don't have yet aside from the handhelds

Honestly if this got a port to the newer consoles and PC it could do pretty well. Yakuza's actually popular now and zombie media isn't as overwhelming as it once was. Not to mention it would be able to run better.

Honestly if you want a nore traditional shooter made by the yakuza team, play Binary Domain. It's pretty good. But it was panned at launch because the reviewa focused way too much on the voice recognition technology. But there is an option to use button commands instead. The game is more on squad management and shooting the robots in certain parts to change how they react. It is a pretty neat game.
Though note that the console versions do chug. While the steam version would need you to use one of the use one of the community configs in steam input to play the game properly with a controller. If the controller is seen as a controller, then the game controls terribly. The triggers are used to move the camera. This is not how the game is meant to be played at all. It's just broken.
Using steam input, you can make a controller be seen as a keyboard and mouse. So you can controler the game how it was meant to be played. But with only 8 directions of movement. You can even still see xbox prompts if you select the option to show them. Also using the switch pro or ps4 controller, you could use gyro aiming. So that's a nice bonus

The problem with the aiming is not the fact the aiming is unresponsive its the fact that the goddamn walking stick is the aiming for the fine aim instead of the lodgical camera stick
I'm okay with this because the game gets across that the fine aim is specifically for standing ground and shooting from a stationary position. It makes positioning and timing of using that mode important to gameplay, but also keeps the player moving.
if You had a problem with it that is funny cause when I was like 11/12 I played this game loved it and it was easy for me guess some people are not so great at shooter's no I won't respond if you somehow see this it is just the truth :) goodbye now

As much as I'd love to cover Like A Dragon right away, a big part of my process is going linearly to discover how we go from Yakuza 1 to Like A Dragon, for example!
