I've seen enough comments for one lifetime misunderstanding what I said in the video about Kiryu and Rikiya's relationship, so I guess I should make a clarification and pin it: To be absolutely clear: I'm not implying they're gay, or that secretly, Kiryu and Rikiya are on a one-way hike down the rail trail. That section of the video is about the use of homoeroticism as a narrative device. Their relationship is incredibly intimate and passionate, and the two become super close to one another. The game even pokes fun at itself about framing their relationship in this way during the love hotel scene. If I wanted to say Kiryu and Rikiya were in a gay relationship, I'd probably have made that section a celebration of how progressive such representation would've been during the time Yakuza 3 came out! But it's not the case here. The use of homoeroticism in storytelling, and two bros actually being in a relationship and loving each other romantically can be two different things, and in this case they are. It's not wishful thinking (lol), it's simply an analysis of the narrative presented. Try not to be weird or mean about it, okay? The amount of people in the comments getting really heated/uncomfortable/rolling their eyes over an insinuation which wasn't even made has gotten way too high. Be better.

I never even thought that at all For me i feel the reason hes so intimate with rikiya is because of the loss of nishiki and how associated it is with his past yakuza life. Being able to open up to someone new NO LESS who is ALSO in the yakuza after accepting past trauma is an IMMENSELY powerful act of acceptance on kiryus part. And after understanding all that pain he sees the worth in the bond he has with rikiya. WHICH IS EVEN MORE FUCKING IMPACTFUL WHEN YOU REALISE THE REASON KIRYU SHEDS THOSE TEARS. MM PH FUCK ME MAN ;0;

Shinji 2.0, Really? I feel saying this is unfair to Rikiya character that was more developed, who was Shinji? Do we know more than 2 things about him? He is loyal to Kiryu, he has a girlfriend, the end. I feel like we didn't spend the same time we spend with Rikiya to rich that conclusion. I think Shinji had not that much going on, we have more quests to know Rikiya, we know his relationships to, and he spend more time with Kiryu on the game, we even know more how he is around him, the only thing they have on common as far as we know is that they are both young and admire Kiryu.

Also I can't speak for the remaster, but I played the original PS3 version which is just very sloppy, especially when I got introduced to this series through 0.
I absolutely adored playing Yakuza: Like a Dad. Every part of being at the orphanage was fun and heartwarming. Then the place gets torn down and I feel like stomping everything to death, they even beat the dog and destroy the doghouse! Who does that?!?!
Its amazing that a game that has a 40 minute cutscene literally labeled as The Plot can also have one of the most emotional moments I've seen in a game. That performance was haunting. Not since 0 had I been so moved in a scene

I just finished playing Yakuza 3, and I gotta say, despite the engine feeling really outdated after playing Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 1 and 2, I really liked the story. I just really enjoyed seeing how sweet and caring Kiryu could be, making friends, being a dad, it was so heartwarming. I really loved the video, I can't believe it doesn't have more views!

Maybe it's just me but I like to think there's an actual love layer between Kiryu and Rikiya. The death scene comforts me in this idea, it's so powerful, bittersweet and intimate. Legit made me cry man tears. Rikiya was such a sweetheart and during the all game I was like "don't die plz don't die, don't do that to me game".
Yakuza 3 was already (tied as) my favorite Yakuza game, and this beautiful, lovely, thoughtful video essay made me fall in love with it all over again. Watching this was a joy, and I appreciate the depth, care, time, and attention you put into this. I enjoyed this. Having seen so much mixed things about yakuza 3, I'm always happy to see positive videos about it. I started the series with Kiwami last year and made my way through with now having recently finished 6 and now going through 0. 3 remains up there in my favorites for all the reasons this video has shown. It's Kiryu in his purest form and his happiest. 6, despite people's complaints is also up there for me for similar reason. our Dad of Dojima just wants to relax and have a family in Okinawa, it's what our boy deserves and what he loves doing.

Ive been binging the series starting with 0 a month ago and today i just finished 3. While i see its age its still a solid entry in the series and i see what the later games and remakes learned from 3. The story still has the yakuza seal of quality

Yakuza 3 was my first entry in the series. It taught me the true meaning of talking with your fists. Before, I used to think it just meant letting might determine who's correct; but the Mine fight taught me that its not a battle of strength, its a battle of willpower and conviction, a test to see if you believe in your principles enough to endure your opponents hits, if the your well of motivation is deep enough that you can punch some of it into them. Of all the weapons available to them, they chose the weakest and most basic, because it wasn't about neutralizing an opponent, it was about convincing themselves and the other on who's way was right.

I completed 0, Kiwami 1, Kiwami 2, 3(which is part of The Yakuza Collection on PS4), and am currently on 4 of the same collection.

As a pc user , how I wish this game was kiwami'd too, played 0, k1,k2 then to play this on an older engine than 0 will feel weird, they just remastered the game so that killed the hopes of having this kiwami'd soon , but I still love this series so when this becomes available on pc I would still try it
I HATE YOU BECAUSE YOU MADE ME RELIVE RIKIYA'S STORY AND I AM NOT OKAY. But I love you because of your in-depth and loving analysis of the Yakuza series, especially this game. While I wanted to get 3 over with because of its clunky mechanics at times (especially coming off the Kiwami games) but the story beats are very powerful and made me actually cry, which only Zero and new parts in Kiwami managed to accomplish. It's very powerful I especially relate to Rikiya because of his love for Kiryu and his desire to be by him even if he can't actually or isn't allowed to help.
On top of the themes of compassion, I would also define Yakuza 3 by Kiryu's love. His love for his children, his friends and allies and his love for Rikiya which is definitely different from the second one and isn't *quite* romantic love but honestly it's the closest to a love interest he has in this game. And boy, do later games (the Kiwami additions come to mind) play with Kiryu's sexuality, with this being the first thing to chew on.
(oh god three part reply) Speaking of later games and the Kiwamis, will you be addressing those in a later video? I was surprised they went unacknowledged in the 1 and 2 videos.

Something I only learned when playing Yakuza 4 on the PC is that the batting mini game is WAY easier using the mouse, I felt so stupid completing the other games with the controller after learning that lol.
I heard that the japanese fans didnt like Sayama so thats the reason they wrote her out. No idea if thats true, but i wonder if that is why they kinda leaned into the whole bromance angle lol
I'm kinda glad they wrote her out, honestly. They sorta did a piss poor job with her in the second game; I'm assuming they were like "yeah no let's not try that again," and focused on what their strengths were.
Assumed lack of interest is most likely why! Yakuza wasn't that popular in the west until 0. It always had its loud fanbase, but it wasn't suuuper big until 0. The samurai games came out when the series was at its lowest visibility here in the West, hence no samurai games!
I mean, say what you will but RGG is nothing but coherent: between Kiryu's anti-euthanasia stance and Song of Life's anti-abortion position they make their ideology quite clear. Shame they always portray other viewpoints as, at the very least, the antagonists while, at the same time, mixing in other worthy values that make their characters so likeable.
In terms of Kiryu's sexuality for the most part he's normally portrayed as straight but given how many of the games in the series i've played i've always had this feeling in the back of my mind that Kiryu is pansexual, someone who only cares about a person's character then their gender. They did try to force him into a relationship with a woman in the second game but it fizzles out by the third game. If anything I think Kiryu falls in love with strong people overall or people that have a strong character to them. It's something he respects and can build a relationship with even if it's not intentional. However due to his past relationships ending in tragedy he's reluctant to open himself up. With children he sees himself as their protector and teacher making it easier for him to open up to him. But adult relationships are tricky for him because of how his ties with the Yakuza usually end up being the reason for their tragedies.
I really like this take! It seems, especially in later entries, the writers distance themselves from worrying about Kiryu's sexuality to focus more on how he expresses intimacy with those close to him. That change in focus very much creates the space for his sexuality to be interpreted however the player wants, which makes him incredibly more accessible to a broader range of people playing Yakuza. It's hard to know for certain, but I'd like to give the writing team credit for leaving parts of Kiryu's character flexible in that way. It's a smart decision from a video game writing perspective.
@@GCVazquez In our current world where journalists try to click bait with Character sexuality it's honestly refreshing that Kiryu's character was left unchecked in this sense. I think the writer's realized with Yakuza 2 that forcing him into a relationship wasn't the smartest idea and it never fit in with the rest of the story at all. If anything it took away form their characters and the chemistry felt so forced. So the fact that Kiryu's intimate relationships are never really touched on for the rest of the series helps the main story overall and leaves it up to the player which i like.
I think the context is wrong on how the word love is used. Its more respect Rikiya respected Kiryu and wanted to be like him. I didnt see anything even remotely romantic about that at all. I mean it can be interpreted as that to some but thats not how i see it.

As a pc user , how I wish this game was kiwami'd too, played 0, k1,k2 then to play this on an older engine than 0 will feel weird, they just remastered the game so that killed the hopes of having this kiwami'd soon , but I still love this series so when this becomes available on pc I would still try it
I think 3 could definitely get a Kiwami at some point! 4 and 5 not so much, but 3 would probably be much better off being Kiwami'd as far as which one

I HATE YOU BECAUSE YOU MADE ME RELIVE RIKIYA'S STORY AND I AM NOT OKAY.
But I love you because of your in-depth and loving analysis of the Yakuza series, especially this game. While I wanted to get 3 over with because of its clunky mechanics at times (especially coming off the Kiwami games) but the story beats are very powerful and made me actually cry, which only Zero and new parts in Kiwami managed to accomplish. It's very powerful I especially relate to Rikiya because of his love for Kiryu and his desire to be by him even if he can't actually or isn't allowed to help.
On top of the themes of compassion, I would also define Yakuza 3 by Kiryu's love. His love for his children, his friends and allies and his love for Rikiya which is definitely different from the second one and isn't *quite* romantic love but honestly it's the closest to a love interest he has in this game. And boy, do later games (the Kiwami additions come to mind) play with Kiryu's sexuality, with this being the first thing to chew on.

Edit: I'm glad I did Rikiya's substories as it really built up his character with him reuniting with his best friend from school and his tattoo finally finished by Kiryu's tattoo artist

great video !!!!! yakuza 3 really turned to be my favorite game after 0 - despite it’s storyline that barely follows itself and the combat that was a pain at times, it was the most wholesome game to me so far.
i was kinda shocked to hear the dev time for this game was less than a year 😭 though it makes sense, i knew something was wrong when they had the politician literally explain the plot mid-game.
also, no karaoke with rikiya? 😭😭😭😭 ok

Something I only learned when playing Yakuza 4 on the PC is that the batting mini game is WAY easier using the mouse, I felt so stupid completing the other games with the controller after learning that lol.
I heard that the japanese fans didnt like Sayama so thats the reason they wrote her out. No idea if thats true, but i wonder if that is why they kinda leaned into the whole bromance angle lol
I'm kinda glad they wrote her out, honestly. They sorta did a piss poor job with her in the second game; I'm assuming they were like "yeah no let's not try that again," and focused on what their strengths were.

Assumed lack of interest is most likely why! Yakuza wasn't that popular in the west until 0. It always had its loud fanbase, but it wasn't suuuper big until 0. The samurai games came out when the series was at its lowest visibility here in the West, hence no samurai games!

I mean, say what you will but RGG is nothing but coherent: between Kiryu's anti-euthanasia stance and Song of Life's anti-abortion position they make their ideology quite clear. Shame they always portray other viewpoints as, at the very least, the antagonists while, at the same time, mixing in other worthy values that make their characters so likeable.
In terms of Kiryu's sexuality for the most part he's normally portrayed as straight but given how many of the games in the series i've played i've always had this feeling in the back of my mind that Kiryu is pansexual, someone who only cares about a person's character then their gender. They did try to force him into a relationship with a woman in the second game but it fizzles out by the third game. If anything I think Kiryu falls in love with strong people overall or people that have a strong character to them. It's something he respects and can build a relationship with even if it's not intentional. However due to his past relationships ending in tragedy he's reluctant to open himself up. With children he sees himself as their protector and teacher making it easier for him to open up to him. But adult relationships are tricky for him because of how his ties with the Yakuza usually end up being the reason for their tragedies.
I really like this take! It seems, especially in later entries, the writers distance themselves from worrying about Kiryu's sexuality to focus more on how he expresses intimacy with those close to him. That change in focus very much creates the space for his sexuality to be interpreted however the player wants, which makes him incredibly more accessible to a broader range of people playing Yakuza.
It's hard to know for certain, but I'd like to give the writing team credit for leaving parts of Kiryu's character flexible in that way. It's a smart decision from a video game writing perspective.
@@GCVazquez In our current world where journalists try to click bait with Character sexuality it's honestly refreshing that Kiryu's character was left unchecked in this sense. I think the writer's realized with Yakuza 2 that forcing him into a relationship wasn't the smartest idea and it never fit in with the rest of the story at all. If anything it took away form their characters and the chemistry felt so forced. So the fact that Kiryu's intimate relationships are never really touched on for the rest of the series helps the main story overall and leaves it up to the player which i like.

I think the context is wrong on how the word love is used. Its more respect Rikiya respected Kiryu and wanted to be like him. I didnt see anything even remotely romantic about that at all. I mean it can be interpreted as that to some but thats not how i see it.
