You're talking about our hustle & mindset to make it. Making it on your own is a huge thing for us, we don't really depend on anyone to save us, we put in the work ourselves and maximise our God given talent.
We compete with ourselves to be the best for ourselves and in the world then circle back to naija 🇳🇬 Also we are not really as united as I would wish we were it contributes to our success but it's sad that we don't see someone's success as a win for the country as a whole only the individuals who happens to be nigerian. And a lot of us are used to it that we are not even surprised anymore. The only thing thay truly unifies us is when it comes to the country's politics & international relations or our image.

We could see the old map before colonial rule how far Ethiopia and Sudan spread, it literally covered the continent and was used to describe it, what matter now is today, Nigeria has around 400 ethnic groups.

I'm a Nigerian and I can confidently tell you that Nigeria is Ghana, Nigeria is SA, Nigeria is Gambia, Ethiopia, Egypt
Nigeria is Ivory coast, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Chad, Burkina Faso, Niger, Cameroon, Congo's, Morocco etc.
So, a win for Nigeria is a win for Africa
And so it is for every African country's.
Yes we are in a competition, not with anyone or country, but with ourselves (cause we always want to beat our previous achievement).
Examples are Victor Osimhen of Napoli, 100m hurdler Tobi Amusan, Long jumper Ese Brume, MMA fighter's Israel Adesanya and Kamaru Usman etcetera.
Yes, those guy's are not perfect and at some point in time they might fall, but they are the true definition of "The spirit/power of Naija", cause they will keep coming back with just one goal/target, to be victorious.
Kudos to you and your team for a well analysed content.

I have a different take... Good hustle with okay music will beat good music with no hustle on most days. Over 60,000 tracks are uploaded to Spotify a day. A DAY. I bet you a good number of those songs are EXCELLENT but have 100 plays or less because the artist has no idea how to get them in front of the right people to grow their audience. No hustle doesn't work in a saturated market like that. This is why the support Nigerians give each other home and away is more important than many think.

I am old enough to remember there was a time that Nigerians didn't play Nigerian music at parties, in clubs or on the radio. We had more western and African music getting airtime. I remember the early days of pop culture in Nigeria- in the 90s - and how we laughed at many Nigerian musicians for trying too hard. But they kept at it and improved. Today, I am impressed by the immense talent coming out of Nigeria. It's been a long journey and those that made the sacrifices deserve the accolades. Nigerians like good things. Reason: Nigerians don't pretend to be exotic. They maintain their language and accent in their music.
Other African countries want to sound exotic in their music. No originality..
This is also true within Nigeria itself. Pioneers like MI Abaga remained behind because of wanting to sound American.
This is the main reason. Originality is always better than an imitation..

That’s very interesting considering alot of afrobeats is a combination of other peoples genres…. It’s got a lot of dancehall, reggae, pop, rnb, hiphop and these days even amapiano. So it’s interesting that you say originality is what pushes Nigeria but most of their top songs and artists take inspiration from other countries and incorporate it into their own.

I am sure he meant innovation, Nigerian musicians use a lot of innovation to craft their masterpieces. Our original beats too have made global waves, think Fela Kuti and others from his timeline. But more recently our musicians are successful because they infuse what works musically into their creations, think the magic we are spinning with the Amapiano beats, think what we did with Azonto, the list is endless.

I love everything you've said. Very fair & brilliant take.
    * No other African country will catch up with Nigeria ever again. & this is not being cocky, it's the reality & I'll explain: Nigerian Music is already global, & every Nigerian Artiste coming up now is targeting the global stage, even before starting. For the rest of Africa, the strife is to firstly gain the attention of the continent before even dreaming of making a universal sound capable of reaching the global audience. The rest of Africa were all asleep or mocking Nigeria/Nigerians when they were putting all this together & it's not going to be easy to find a place with Nigerians at the very top, much less overthrow them.
POV: Yes, the population is a plus, but it's for the benefit of all. Just make an incredible sound & promote it to get the attention of Nigerians & your song will be the most streamed. & as long as your song beats that of a Nigerian in quality & you promote it fairly, rest assured that Nigerians aren't biased, they'll reward your talent with great support ahead of their own. Ask Tyla, Libianca, Black Sheriff, Big Tril, Camidoh, King Promise, ... who have benefitted from the Nigerian Support lately & you'll understand better. Just produce quality, & you'll benefit from the quantity & wealth/spending & purchasing power Nigeria/Nigerians has/have. When Africa come to accept that Nigeria is like New York or Texas of Africa & try to collaborate instead of beef, then wealth will flow for all & the rest of the world will worship us as a continent & not separately as countries.
    One love Africa.

Yes we have more numbers but that is a very minor reason. South African music is even more popular in Nigeria. The success most artists like davido have is from outside Nigeria. Like I said it's our drive

As a Nigerians, I agree completely. Congo is definitely the template & I am not scared to say this. Congo is the template!. What Nigerians have done is we studied from everybody from Africa to the west, to Arabia to even Asia. That is why you have some of our artist may sound (arabic, indian in their sounds). We took unique elements from everywhere & blended it with our own local sounds, mix it up with our culture, swag, slang. Then took heavy risk with promoting us by "any" means necessary even if it requires us not making a dime off the project. We knew we had something unique in what Fela did, we took that as our focal point and so regardless of anything, we unite under "Afrobeats to the world" which made us have one agenda & easy to push. South Africa is doing thesame "Amapiano to the world". Hopefully other countries will follow suite. I think Congo has something unique in ndombolo, refine it and push that agenda. Also be willing to take risk. There was a time wizkid went to the bank for a loan to bet on himself & career. He didnt get it but he took that risk.

It began when we started to prefer our music to foreign ones, and played it proudly everywhere we went.
I like AKA, Casper Nyovest, Sauti Sol, Sarkodie, etc and I realized it was when Nigerians liked their songs these guys blew. I acknowledge that collaborations with our artists also put them on our radar, but all boils down to Nigerians hyping and loving their music.

Like you highlighted in the video, we can buy the club just to play our music. I was in the Philippines and my Nigerian brothers did the same. That sells your culture to even foreigners. At some point even some club owners started playing our music even before a single Nigerians hops into that club. This is a very strong strategy I encourage Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa and the rest to follow. Don’t think too much about the money you are spending in that club, the end goal is to sell the music and culture in diaspora. If one person cannot afford this, people can contribute just to get this done. Nigerians see music as both art and business, while other Africans sometimes invest less in the business side of it. A well analyzed video, you got a new sub.

    • @MJWemoto

Afro beats have fans in places like India & S.America. One cannot put that on diasporians. Think reggae music & low populated
    Jamaica.
The quality of the music & mainly inoffensive lyrics are very important for a large market base.

    • @MJWemoto
      @MJWemoto  8 місяців тому +1

I don't dispute that but Davido explained it very well in the clip I added to the video that what the Nigerian diaspora did was doing things to push Afrobeats to the communities around them when nobody else was listening to it. They played a significant role by firstly being proudly Nigerian and loving their music that when they went to bars, clubs, parties etc they would do everything to hear Nigerian music being played in those spaces. Afrobeats wouldn't be where it is without that grassroots Nigerian support. The fans you speak of exist as a result of that early stage push by the Nigerian diaspora first - the first frontier. That's what this video explains.

    • @hikidunm1582
      @hikidunm1582 8 місяців тому +1

@MJWemoto As one who lived in the States b4 the birth of the brilliant Davido. Nigerian parties & music were a constant staple. Sunny Ade visiting Los Angeles in the 80s - his concerts were sold out with Africans & non Blacks.
I spent time in India in the 2000s - we weren't even considered.
When Jamaican artists moved from Reggae to Ragga, lyrics got way more risque - besides Sean Paul the genre lost traction.
Chris Brown on a 2014 tour of Ghana brought out Wiz kid as a guest, there was backlash cos he wasn't Ghanaian. Wiz is now a top star in the same market.
When I see Swahili speaking E.Africans singing in pidgin English, ditto with young Indians at weddings - gotta be about quality of music.
      Bless Up soldier.

Your intervention, by virtue of this video is well understood, (I believe by many).
The point where you noted, that opportunities, especially in L.A. isn't the same as in (say like) Philadephia.
Above all, a United Africa is the way forward, whenever we're ready.

You forget that you find lot's of them in 100 of thousands if not millions in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe and so forth. So easy for Nigerian music to soar and become big hits outside of Nigeria. So it makes sense that they'll be doing good with their music overseas.

@MJWemoto The part you never thought of but also gave Afrobeats acceptance is connection to diaspora Africans whose ancestors were enslaved Africans. Especially in the Americas. Many of these descendants of enslaved Africans in many of these countries, despite centuries of disconnection, are still connected to Africa, especially West Africa and, in particular, Yoruba culture. Among all the cultures of enslaved Africans to the Americas, the most resilient and persistent of the culture is Yoruba culture and spirituality. Some of these people of African diasporas are naturally connected towards Afrobeats and wholly accepted the music wherever they are as music coming from the motherland. It is very common in most musical videos of Afrobeats to read comments from Brazil,Haiti,Mexico,Cuba,Puerto Rico Trinidad, and Tobago about Afrobeats.

You said it all. Nigeria music is making wave today In Africa and the world at large is not really bcos of the beat. The beat is sweet and cool by the way but the population and also the number of Nigerians across the globe like you rightly said is what is keeping Nigeria up there. By the way you forgot to mention 2face idibia here.
