You are right about the population and the support, but one thing you didn't capture is the quality of what they tune out.
The quality of songs, they lyrics, the beats and the videography is top notch. Language is never a problem, you can use swahili a vast language in Africa and still blow, but the beat and video has to be world class.
This why Nigeria has most consumers in Africa.

Naija has learned from the West and has used art to infuse its style into what is today's naija culture. What many haven't realized is support comes from good-quality sound, vibing lyrics, and quality videos. Naija has improved on these principles to grow the industry.

Kenyan artistes should go out of their comfort zone, learn new things and use them to build a musical culture for yourself. I can tell you vividly if Amapiano was to come from Nigeria it would have blown at the inception of the sound.

  • @MostlyPeacefulNinja

You guys don't understand! It's not about population size or language. This is why you guys are losing (with all due respect). It's about QUALITY, HARD WORK, and great MARKETING. Most of the popular songs from Nigeria are sang in Pidgin English and Yoruba language, and a few in Igbo; but there are over 500 languages in Nigeria in case you don't know. More people speak Swahili in East Africa than people that speak Yoruba in Nigeria. So what is your excuse?
Also, Nigerians are the biggest critics of our own artists. We don't just support them because they are Nigerian. If they put out nonsense music that isn't sweet, Nigerians will be the first to tell them it's not sweet. In case you guys don't know, when Burna Boy first came out, Nigerians were the first to give him trouble for the way he sounds and the way he looked. Go and check the earlier comment on the video "Like to Party". You can see that Burna Boy took this criticism and went to work on improving both is sound and image, and everything worked out fantastically for him.
Fast forward to today and you can hear even WHITE Americans and Europeans singing our songs even the parts that are in Yoruba. Do the Americans speak Yoruba? No. But they are vibing to it because it sounds good. Other african countries should learn to perfect their craft and put in the work instead of making excuses. Some of you have no idea about Mo hits Records. Nigerians have been doing this for a long time and perfecting the sound to what it is today.
This message is not against Kenyans (I love Kenyans, they are one of our biggest supports). I just want to tell people the truth about what is going on.

If Kenyans want to go global, learn how America, Jamaica, UK and Nigeria did it. It's that simple. The musical successes of these nations isn't a secret.
    1) is originality
    2) collaboration
    3) get ready to spend money for massive promotion and a quality product
Follow these 3 and you will go global.
It isn't by language. Nigerians sing in Edo, Yoruba, Igbo and Pidgin and at times add Zulu, Twi and co to their songs.
Yet the world dance to our songs.
K-pop is sang in Korean, and k-pop is global.
I would personally want you to mix English and Swahili.
You are an English speaking nation, take advantage of that.
The countries I mentioned above are all English speaking and it isn't a coincidence.
And get sponsors, record labels to sign you guys.
The music industry is very competitive globally. To conquer the world, first conquer east Africa, the Africa, then the world.
Kenyan artists should swallow their pride, us their managers to collaborate with Nigerians to penetrate the Nigerian market
If you win in Nigeria, you have won in Africa, we have the population and diaspora to push your music. See black Sheriff of Ghana.

I think Nigerian "identity" comes before its music. I identify Kenya with the Safari and a diverse economy, but not really a contemporary urban identity. From YT videos, I can tell its there - nightlife, entertainment etc., so Kenya just has to project that identity and categorize its music. Then people will buy into that identity. Afrobeats is about Nigerian confidence, "swag", love of culture (dress, slang etc.), culture of celebration etc. So I think its more than just using understandable words in the hooks. Anyway, Kenyans always show us Nigerians love so kudos to you.

I get your point about The urban selling point.Urban Kenyans seem westernized or modernized. We seem to lack a culture to sell in music. Kenyans thrive on hip-hop & dancehall vibes. Kenyan hits that do well in Kenya seem to have dancehall and hip-hop/rnb influences

I have heard this excuses many times especially from Ghanaians that Nigerian songs are popular because of the huge Nigerian Market. We as black people like to give excuses rather than putting the work.
Kenya like he said is about 70 million whereas Jamaica is just about 3 million and their music for decades is played all over the world even till date.Nigerian has always had huge populations even though the population continues to grow, but that did not make Nigerian songs popular all over the world in the 80s and 90s but small country like Jamaica whose entire polution is lesser than lagos was known all over the world for reggae when there was no social media..Now,we have social media and any good music can make it big.
The point is that effort has to be made and music has to evolve and appealing to a wider audience for it to be trending and be accepted by the majority.
China and India has the largest population in the world. In fact, the Chinese population is almost equal to that of the whole of Africa even though it is approximately 4 times smaller, their music is not popular. So,it has nothing to do with population but how appealing the music is to the people around the world.
Music is universal. One may not understand what is being said but the rhythm is what appeals

Population has nothing to do with Nigeria's success.
First, Jamaica is barely 2.1 million, and their reggae conquered the world.
Second, Nigeria started from nothing, and right now, Nigeria's Nollywood has surpassed India's bollywood to be the second largest movie industry in the world.
Chinese and Indian movie industries were already established since the 70's. China's population is 1.39 billion. India is 1.3 billion.

How is it that the Congolese soukous was able to blow up around Africa & the world then? Soukous isn't sang in a global language like English?
I think a lot of factors led to Afrobeats becoming popular around the world it's hard to pick just one. I think the timing made it possible too; it happening in the social media age with trends, virility & a communication revolution spurring the genre's growth. South Africa's Amapiano is another genre that hasn't relied on English in getting a global reception. I dont think it has to do with what Kenyan music isn't doing. We shouldnt beat ourselves for this.

Nigerians are intentional about their music.. A Nigerian artist can get in the studio and decide to make a song that will be big in Asia.. He goes into the studio and tells the producer the idea he has.. The producer may incorporate one element of Asian music in the song and the singer/artists may shout out Asian country or capital in the song.. . Before you can say Jack Robinson, the song is going viral in Asia and everywhere else. In all, the song is melodious, the hook is catchy so people everywhere can relate to it... That is just the process even though it is not as easy as i said it..

HE IS WRONG! SO VERY WRONG. music has nothing to do with the Language or the population (Cue in Jamaica leading the world with Reggaeton with a small Population), but everything to do with the Artists who genuinely know how to sing collaborating with other more successful Musicians. Producers who understand the business of music is more than just sound production. Marketers who are willing to spend money and take risks and Proud Kenyan people travelling, telling, talking and playing this music wherever they go. All this must be done consistently. That is how to sell Music to the world. Even if Kenyan music is just sound and no words, it would become a Genre and will still draw millions if it is of good quality. Is there any Nigerian who doesn't know Sauti Sol and Diamond Platinumz. I appreciate your sweetness by the way. Angelic behaviour.

Nigerian-pidgin is local to us lol Nigerian-pidgin has been copied and adapted in many parts of Africa. And many songs in Yoruba do well so you don't have to sing in English tbh but it can help. Most of the time Nigerians sing in Naija-pidgin and Yoruba.

The opposite of what you are saying is actually true. English is probably kenya's problem,it's a borrowed language, colonial language.Nigeria use to sing in pure English language few years ago, nobody recognised those artist then. You can not be successful trying to do everything in someone else language, you got to accept and embrace yourself first before anyone can accept you. Now white people sing to Nigerian music, especially the local lyrics more than the English part. Shayoo, lgbo, buga etc. are not English language for example. The Swahili population is more than local Nigerian language population so you should be doing better if it all about population really.. Most of this Nigerian artist are mostly from the southern part of Nigeria and sings in either yoruba and lgbo. What am l saying, 75 percent of Nigerians don't understand some of these local language in these songs too, like buga won,etc only the pigin English part we all understand but we all still jam to the vibe and rhythm. There is something about singing relatable songs, the vibe and sound, not trying to sound jamaica or American to an African audience.....

@@Msoh1 It is! It's the fundamental of who we are as human beings. If we can not embrace our language and mother tongue and start doing things in it like singing, dont expect foreigners to embrace you trying to do things in foreign language. Instead, people will look to,embrace the source of that foreign language. Nigerian artists were lucky, without realising it they started singing in pigin English,a local language made up in Nigeria,so that they can reach more local audience. Before they know it the songs are crossing borders, foreigners are vibing to local languages like pigin English, yoruba, lgbo. Anyways l enjoys the conversation nonetheless, welldone! A new sub here.Thank you.
