The music industry is just like any other industry. Even jobs today act like record labels. The cashier at absa handles millions on a daily basis in deposits and withdraws only to get paid peanuts at the end of the month. You honestly just have to choose your battle and pick who you're comfortable exploiting you.

Not necessarily, cashiers are replaceable. Top talents have rare skills. But I guess it all leads down to the same question: do you truly know the business?

I’m an black first generation American and I’m unfamiliar with any of these songs or artists- but what amazes me is how similar the exploitation of these artists are the same as in the US… it’s always been that way here record labels are notorious for slave driving when it comes to artists.
It looks like these labels are following the same playbook. I don’t understand why in today with all the information out there anyone would still decide to sign to a label. Learn music marketing, and build your fan base up on your own- it will always cost less

Thanks for touching on the payola. The real reason why music and talentless artists are being promoted. We all know the billboards make no sense and its starting to be so obvious that its all being manipulated so that we can all be brain washed. Thats why i dont bother with any new music, not because im getting older but because the music nowdays does not make any sense and the messages behind the music are nonexistent. When last have you seen any motivational or a song about sturggles in life end up in the top 10?

another thing to blame is also the artists’ knowledge and education about the contracts they’re signing. The companies will take a huge cut because they provide amenities such as houses, all expense paid trips, cars, and marketing. Artists usually fall for these without paying attention to how much they will be receiving from streams. Then blame the labels that they aren’t getting paid enough.

One would say "I should sympathize with the artist for signing deals that don't benefit them" but let's be honest with ourselves. Anyone in this world is not getting what they deserve despite the work that they do, not even a bare minimum wage to sustain their lives. I sympathize more with the person who works on the streets sweeping and keeping them clean for R3k more than someone whose job is to entertain people and is probably earning R25k or even more just because they have a following. The music industry is f'ed but so are other industries in the world, but nobody is speaking about them because no one cares.

The point is Record labels are not fully honest to artists when they approach them. They find artists in a state where they are not well informed about the business side of music and tell them more about the fame and fantasies after signing . They don't involve lawyers and most of the artist are found broke so they cant hire lawyers also. They pretend to care about you and your journey, but all they about is the money afterwards

Tell me about it. My dream went down the drain coz l thot l was smart enough not to be manipulated. And here l am with heaps of unused manuscripts and concepts that never saw the light of day in the media as l had preconceived. Now l console myself with the idea of passing over the stick to one of my children, to take from where l left.
Guys! I was sent from one office to another. Met the big wigs of the television industry. But all in vain. It was draining. Imagine being told to fork out R50 000 cash admission fee, when you're earning R3,500 a month. You paying rent, transport, food and other basics. That was back in 2007. Asked to sign a 5yr contract taking less than 20% of the proceeds, yet all ideas were mine. 80+% was for the producer's shoot and getting me a slot on the broadcasting channel. Shattered dreams!

Well, the most problem with the majority of artists is that they can't read nor understand contacts that they receive from the records labels, because ALL CONTRACTS have clauses which are included in those contacts, so that's why it is advise for all artists to contact qualified lawyers to assist them (artists ) before signing any contacts that they receive or get from record labels and also get proper legal advises..so the main purpose of the contract clauses are there for unforeseen circumstances (my opinion).

Dude, there is a lot of preaching in your videos with very little information, with a good production and very good ideas on the videos you post and I really want to listen to all of them.
    1. I do not know what type of contracts musicians sign so that they can either leave or at least negotiate better.
    2. Navigating solo is difficult but you forget to mention online platforms that actually solo artists can use to sell their music without the stress of the industry
    3. There are a couple of artists who went solo who could have been mentioned.
    4. Less preaching and going to the point would be awesome and make your videos to be at least 10 minutes long instead of 20.
    5. A lot of philosophical talk, like, a looooooottttt!
But your head is in the right track, you didn't get to almost 10k followers doing sloppy work, you can be better and will be. All the best and good luck! Will continue to watch.

To be honest: some of these are not fair on record labels
    1. They are not supposed to manage your finances, they are not your parent or guardian as an artist
    2. When they invest on you there is a chance of failure of which the artist never pays if the investment does not pay off.
    3. They are not supposed to get you a lawyer just like any other job
    4. Most people experience depression just that artists are on the spotlight
    5. These things happen in sports as well
    6. Payola is normal, for an example: The radio DJ cannot listen to every RAP song and play it on radio: its unfair.
Artists should not blame record labels, they should take responsibility.

Entertainers live a very privileged lifestyle. They normally see and do many things which the average human only read about in books and see on the television. But they will be never satisfied and they always want more because they feel their little rhymes and melodies are one of a kind and special. They actually believe what's written on the package. I think if they are so stupid to believe it all, then they should be exploited and replaced as they go stale and cannot produce new and exciting riffs for us to hum along too. They believe in all their hearts that they are important or relevant. But the companies who promote these nieve and hungry humans know better.
