In Kenya it is not only afro beat that is dominating, there is Amapiano, Ugandan music, reggae and bongo flava from TZD,in short Kenyans listen to anything good....,but young Kenyan generation is fighting hard to make "*gengetone music"",recognized just like Amapiano and afro beat.
What I like about Nigeria is that there artists are consistent, they always make hits,(wizzy, fireboy, joeboy, omah lay and Rema). Actually I can sing "Alcohol by joeboy", "Understand,Lolo,Godly by omah lay", "dis love, cool me down and anoti by wizzy", and "Rema's calm down, ginger and bounce "", word per word, afro beat will surely open doors for other African music .

Suppose the Nigerian football league becomes as good as the English Premier League and the rest of Africa is watching and aspiring to see their players play in Nigeria, I guess you will begin to cry that it is an agenda to take over other African countries. Why don't we see this same energy when it's American and Jamaican music, or European cultural imperialism? This is simply the psychology of self hatred

Few years back, that Nigerian producers took Ghana as their second home, investing heavily in Ghana movie industry producing the likes of John dumelo, van vicker, Jackie, Nelson, e.t.c. it was still Ghanaians that chased them out by placing heavy tax on them, saying for every movie production done on Ghana soil they have to pay heavily, now they all left, and the movie industry we claim was strong suddenly collapsed showing that they have been the financial Piller of the industry.....
There's nothing deliberate about Nigerians they only created culture around their entertainment industry, South African are doing the same they have created a culture around their amapiano sound

These guys are funny🤣🤣 🤣 Welldone to the last speaker, the only intelligent one on this panel. Agbada is a addressing in Nigeria before nollywood.Agbada is a native attire in Nigeria not inspired by nollywood.. The secret to Nigeria success is love instead of jealousy and complaining.Appreciate good music, music that speaks to you, be grateful and let it inspire you. There was a time Congo music was popular in Nigeria, Nigerians never saw anything wrong with it. Maria makeba, lucky dube and South African music was popular in Nigerian no nigerian complained, we saw it as good African music by one of us.I am honestly beginning to believe that we Nigerians are the only becon of hope for the black race, we are not this jealous and bad belly toward other Africans or success rather thank God for them and aspire to be successful someday. That is Nigerian secret!! I tell you this for free, Nigerian government is not trying to dominate any African country through music🤔🤣🤣lt's shows that Ghanaians don't really understand or know Nigeria. Music or intertainment industry is the last thing on Nigerian government mind, those government people are more interested in oil revenues not nollywood or Burma boy.

Nigerians are just extremely creative and Talented, it’s Innate. I’ve started feeling like other African countries want to see Nigeria go down and be consuming whatever those colonial masters feed them like so many African countries. I don’t know if you are a Kenyan but I personally haven’t seen collabo apart from Souti sol with Nigerians artists but Diamond from Tanzania is tapping into that. I think you are a Ghanaian and your obsession and inferiority complex problem. We Nigerians take risks and we just do our thing whether it will succeed or not. This guy you have issues. Ghanaian should be worry about important areas of Ghana private sector that Nigerians are having big % of control , from banking, insurance, telecom,.. Even Ghana music award was started by a. Nigerian own company, there are levels in everything comparing a anything in Ghana to Nigeria is like comparing Namibia to South Africa... Ghana is unofficial state of Nigeria considering the level of control Nigerians have in every areas of the Ghana private sector, Ghana is just like a state in Nigeria with sovereignty

Let me give you an example.
When I was in Kiev in Ukraine, I used to work at a forex company, the workers were mainly students from overseas and Ukrainians.
There were many Indians and Pakistanis because they were good at marketing, many arabs as well and Israelis because the company then was an Israeli company, there were Ghanaians and other African nationals, the Nigerians working there were not up to 6 or 7 employees but when we spoke with each other especially during the lunch breaks, we Nigerians spoke in our local pidgin, then other nationals noticed that we spoke in a certain unclear English, they took interest and started to ask us in what language we spoke, they started to look and laugh when we spoke, trying to understand one or two words, gradually they started to crack our pidgin and that's how the Indians, Ukrainians, Pakistanis, Arabians etc started to learn the pidgin because they sort of found us funny and we laugh and joked louder during the lunch breaks, we sat like in groups at the big kitchen, each with their own nationals and they were bored with their own nationals but they found our small team funny as we joked and laughed each other loudly, they started coming closer to us to joke with us as our table (Nigerians) was never boring. From then we made friends and they started picking one or two words from our pidgin and on the process learned our slangs to the extent that after work some other foreign nationals including the Ukrainian locals left their group and walked with us together to the metro stations where we all boarded trains and everyone left and even while on the road to the metro we all together with the foreigner joked in our local pidgin slangs and from there we played our music they loved it, then we had a big general speaker at the Central marking hall where all nationals worked, we went to the admins (Israelis) and urged them to let us play from our phones because the music they played were bored and didn't energise the workers to make sales instead make people fall asleep on the desks, luckily we were given the chances and we played once and the whole hall was a banger, everyone who never even in their life heard of African music (all nationalities including the Europeans) stood up, danced and talked on the phone with their clients, the admins were so overwhelmed by the energy the songs brought and the quantity of sales we were able to make that day, the next day immediately work commenced, my Nigerian neighbour at work was called by the Israeli admins to come and connect and play from his phone same Nigerian songs, bro before we knew it, the whole company started to Shazam the songs, download and watch the videos at home, and that's how a team of 7 Nigerians conquered a company with up to 200 workers. That's who we are, we are not dull, at the company many other African nationals worked there but they were even too scared or ashamed to get up from their seats, walk the hall to the toilets but we Nigerians were too bold and other African nationals woke up and became proud of themselves as well. Also we Nigerians made more sales than every other national there and Nigeria became a name in that company that their vacancy adverts on the Internet only stated "Nigerian needed for a marketing vacancy"
Bro that's who we are. Learn from us, be proud of yourself and never feel scared to take chances.

  • @osakweog

A word of advice for the panelists. No govt will make your entertainment industry to dominate or grow big. You guys get it wrong all the time. All I keep hearing is govt this, govt that. That immediately tells me where the problem is coming from. The mindset is wrong.
Govt can only give you the enabling environment. And in Africa name one responsive govt anywhere to give you that bcos they are still grappling with very basic human needs for the people. It is private people, enterprenuers, business men who will push your entertainment industry not the govt. As soon you have business men who's ready to take risks with your industry, you will start seeing results. Nigerian business men can take huge risks, most times it pays off bcos they can spot opportunities. Stop calling on govt to invest money on your industry. It is not even right. Yea even in Nigeria, they sometimes talk about grants for the industry, but you hardly see the money. Remember even when you want to asses the loan, you must do a business analysis to know whether your movie can make that money back. It is not a straight forward thing. That's why business men are the go to for this task. Business men drive the Naija entertainment industry not the govt. We have a very useless govt who can't even provide us with the basics. Slow down on this fixation on govt aid. Also realize that no amount of regulation can stop your young ones streaming music online. Who still listens to radio. Those ones depends on online trends to play. You guys need to understand this thing better.
Big ups to Kenyans though. They are the only Africans that genuinely love Nigerians. In as much as they are complaining too, but you will never hear or see the kind of toxicity you see in Ghana & Cameroon. Great people. 👍🏾🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬

Nice discussion. But you guys are missing a great point. Nigeria GOVERNMENT was not instrumental to what the Entertainment Industry in Nigeria And Africa is today. I repeat, Nigeria Government never supported the industry either financial, legally or in any form. Ease note that.
Now, let me tell you the true story. Nigeria Entertainment vis-a-vis MOVIE/FILM and MUSIC, evolved naturally. That is what many do not know. How? Please follow me.
All the tribes in Nigeria, both major and minor tribes have that entertainment gene in them naturally. The Southern part of Nigeria dominated by Yoruba and Igbo are naturally full of entertainers. To examples, the Yoruba Film Actors in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s were busy making CELLULOID FILMS such as Late, OGUNDE, ADE LOVE, BABA SALA, etc they will raise money personally and do film. But bcos Nigerians have been struggling to survive in any areas of endeavours, that is why you see Nigerians traveling everywhere in the world for greener pasture. That has been our nature since 18 something. So for those who could not travel out, they will think and look for ways to survive. So, in 1992, a young Igbo man called OKECHUKWU OGUNJIOFOR popularly known as PAULO just finished from JOS FILM INSTITUTE and moved to Lagos to produce a film but FUND/CASH was a big problem. He has to hawk on the street of Lagos to raise money. Yet, he could raise the money but in the process, he met some people rehearsing a drama for a TV show at National Cultural Center, Iganmu Lagos and joined them, not directly but when he made a professional suggestion and he was accepted. In the process he wrote a Film titled LIVING IN BONDAGE (the original version in 1992). Now hear the beginning of MOVIE INDUSTRY in Nigeria birthed today's NOLLYOOD. OKECHUKWU OGUNJIOFOR couldn't produce this FILM in CELLULOID that was in VOGUE then, he then thought deep and said to himself, why can't I produce this film in VHS VIDEO CASSETTE so that it can be watched in homes instead of cinema houses back then. He did his maths and said to himself that if I cam produce 100,000 VHS CASETTES and sell it to homes, bcos VIDEO PLAYER was reigning in homes back then with ENGLISH and INDIAN videos. That is how he produced the FIRST HOME VIDEO title LIVING IN BONDAGE.
It was the success of this that opened the other THEARTER PRACTITIONERS back then to start producing HOME VIDEOS in Video Cassette. That was how the film industry was disrupted and started growing.
This challenged the MUSIC industry too. Likewise in 60s, 70s, 80s, we played American music in parties. In 80s some Nigeria music artistes like CHRIS OKOTIE, FELIX LEBARTY, etc start playing POP MUSIC. Mind you, Yorubas still maintain their JUJU, FUJI, APALA, and AFROBEAT music of Fela Anikulapo Music. But in late 90s, something changed ... KENNY OGUNGBE and D-ONE started a Music Programme on Ray-Power FM and AIT TV station, it was called KENNY MUSIC, it was the two that started promoting Nigeria Music on Radio. Both of them came from USA, they do play some America Music but later started encouraging Nigeria music. The moment Nigeria POP now AFROBEATS music found its ways to the AIRWAVE, Nigerians with loads of talents started going into Music. Nigeria University became the breeding ground. Those who are serious dropped out of school and faced music. The likes of TUFACE IDIBIA and his PLANTATION BOYS, etc started ruling the waves.
All those Musicians you see today, struggled on their without a single help from the government.
It is survival instinct in all Nigeria with NEVER GIVE UP spirit is what is producing success from all Nigerians all over the world.
Another thing Africans do not know is that, WE NIGERIA LOVE OURSELVES. Forget politics that is dividing us at home. If YORUBA, IGBO, HAUSA, FULANI, EDO, EFIK, IGALA, etc meet in London, US or anywhere, they will become blood brothers instantly and will support one another. This has been happening decades ago.
Now, when MOVIES and MUSIC industry started growing and were being exported outside Nigeria. It is NIGERIANS in GJANA, KENYA, TOGO, BENIN, GAMBIA, TANZANIA, etc made them popular in their respective countries of residence. They took ownership and started playing those CASETTES and CDs and even became distributors to Nigeria Marketers. You guys may have forgotten, Nigerians have aggressive marketing style. They will place TV in the shop right in the open and started playing it. Many of you talking now may have watched one or two of some films in the market. Again, what popularize Nigeria films and music is the setup of VIDEO CLUB where people borrow films to watch.
Government was never part of it. It is when those diehard artistes made NOLLYWOOD and MUSIC industries that Federal Government came to encourage them and provided billions of Naira to support the industry through our BANK OF INDUSTRY.
So, if you guys are hungry enough, you must work harder than Nigeria. In today's industry with advent of INTERNET that has turned the whole world to a GLOBAL VILLAGE. You have to work extra hard to bat Nigerians today. Just check out the recent turn out at O2 ARENA in London organized by both WHIZKID and DAVIDO, it was sold out.
Look, Nigeria population is a great factor. The population of Nigerians in Ghana alone is far more than population of man Africa countries. Nigerians in London runs into millions ... Nigerians in USA also runs into millions. These population is enough to sell their film/movies to. Mind you, Nigerians don't move alone in any country they go to. They befriend and flex with them. That is how our culture you talked about influence others unknowingly and unconsciously. There is no government plan to export any culture. Our ways of interaction and socialization is a product of what you're seeing today. No legislature can stop Nigerians. If you know you know. The best way is to collaborate and let AFRICA CULTURE evolve in the process. We need to evolve into AFRICA CULTURE now. But any gang up against Nigeria out of envy and jealousy will not work. If Ghana or Kenya stop Nigeria music via the law, can they stop millions of Nigerians in Ghana to play Nigerians in their countries? Can they legislate Ghanaians and Kenyans on APPLE MUSIC, SPORTIFY, etc to stop going on the INTERNET? All gang up against Nigeria will fail. Why you guys are busy with laws and strategies to stop Nigerians, they are working harder and come out with a new bang.
The solution in today's world is COLLABORATION that will evolve into AFRICA CULTURE.
