One thing a yoke is not good for is if you are part of the FSD beta program. You're supposed to have your hands on or very near the steering wheel and be ready to take control at any time. Right, good luck doing that with a yoke when the FSD beta computer is doing the steering and the yoke is twisting and turning and jerking all around like it does many times when the computer is steering. With a round wheel you can let it slide through a loose grip but not with a yoke.
By the way, the 7-Eleven near our house in Fresno California installed three Electrify America chargers about a year and a half ago so the news about 7-Eleven branded chargers coming to a lot more of their stores is interesting and exciting.
Hack competition is a good way to find weakness and correct them.
I prefer that.

I'm team blinker stalk :D. Really important in Europe where you usually need to indicate while leaving a roundabout so that's where the yoke would be off-center and the blinker buttons too.
The chief problem with the yoke is that it doesn’t lock @ 90 degrees in either direction; when turning the yoke to the 90 degree position you should be executing the tightest turning circle possible for the car.

I am a wheel person, living in the foothills of the cascade mountains, we get mornings and evening of black ice along with the occasional snow, like this morning. I have had my 2wd Tesla and my Chevy Tahoe when not in 4wd, the rear starts to slide, especially on some corners I have to drive through. With the wheel I am very comfortable with handling the cars and stopping the slide , regaining control, not sure I would be so comfortable with the yoke, doing a panic steering. Oh yes I’m not drive real fast in these conditions, but we have areas due to tress, may not see sunshine and these spots can retain the ice for days or until the temperatures reach the mid 30’s, while areas with sunshine will melt quickly.
Not buying another Tesla if it doesn't have a wheel and stalks.
I just paid 2900 for a 10/100k extended warranty via Xcelerate. Best EV extended warranty. It doesn't cover battery or drivetrain but so much cheaper then Tesla. They also pay up front to the service center

Wow, those Tesla warranty’s sound expensive. An additional 3 year warranty on my Ford was 450 euros.
Most trucks are sold in Texas
And most in Texas do not want that yoke

My biggest problem with the yoke is the awful horn button. Try to find it a uickly when there’s an emergency. Tesla’s round wheel should have located a giant horn button in the middle like older model S. Rotation of yoke should have variable response with 180 degrees of maximum rotation.
I prefer the wheel, but I haven’t tried the Yoke, so you never know.
Very interesting news, I’m from Canada and wondering if it’s the same here in term of the EV incentives and extra warranties.
That is a critical issue on these Electric cars is that someone could possibly hack into your vehicle. If it has a computer, it can be hacked. Hopefully manufacturers are designing the systems so that they cannot be hacked into and steal your 50-60 thousand dollar vehicle.
Jeepers 2 years extended warranty on my 2011 Lexus ISF including whole of Europe Recovery in ANY car was £795.....what a bargain that was compared to Tesla....the battery and drivetrain are covered already for 8 years so you are paying $1800 to cover what? doors? seats? wiper blades????
That Ford Explorer is basically a bastardized VW ID4. Will be interesting to see the specs.

Steering wheel will always be around. Not having half of the wheel makes driving really unsafe as hand over hand is faster then arm over arm.
Smart to have people hacking. Get them paid, and then get them a job.
I drove a new Model S with the 'joke' wheel and refused to buy one solely for that reason! I found it very dangerous making turns and parking the car. And i believe the proof is how fast they sold out of the round wheel.
Two dealbreakers for my cyber truck order are yolk only and less than 500 miles of range. We are good on the wheel just waiting on range.
I’m team yoke, but I do think the bottom corners of the yoke need to be smoothed out a bit. It is constantly bumping my leg when in FSD.
6:12 Not quite correct that this is Ford's first non-North American built EV. The Ford Focus Electric was previously assembled at Ford's Saarlouis, Germany plant up until 2018.

I sold my 2022 Tesla Model S because of the yoke. Not having the horn in the center of the wheel is a MAJOR safety defect. When i found myself in a situation where i had to immediatelly honk, my fingers couldnt find that tiny button! And, when doing turns i would often accidently honk! Lastly, I like to grab the steering wheel to enter the car and lower myself to the seat. but the way i park my car the yoke was always turned and it was too far away from me as i entered to use it. I replaced my MS with a superior car - BMW i4 edrive40.
Anybody who didnt expect that is not quite bright.
They COULD make a yoke with an upper section to become a wheel that is user removable/replaceable. Duh.
I wish they would offer a yoke retrofit for older models as well. I'd love a yoke on my 2016 X
Tech companies pay hackers all the time to find exploits so they can fix them, they are called "bug bounties". Nothing new honestly, except it just might be for Tesla since EV adoption is growing so fast.

If you purchase the steering wheel, when getting it changed out at the SC, do you get to keep the yoke or tesla will keep it? Technically the yoke is yours. And Should leave the SC with the steering wheel installed and the yoke in your car/hand.

The steering “yoke” shape is not the issue. The infuriating Taptic buttons are.

Lexus is introducing a better implementation - steer by wire, no mechanical connection between steering wheel and front axle, redundancy like in an airplane included.
Different steering ratio dependent on the speed, synthetic feedback, level and comfort adjustable.
Biggest difference to Tesla: you just need to turn 150° to each side, so no need to grab over. 😉

It actually will get it's biggest perk for people not qualified for 7500 tax credit. It will be less expensive and less competition for demand from people qualified for tax credits.
If Tesla drop the price of base Model 3 by $3000 from current price to be below $40k, it will be very attractive to people who cannot get tax credit anyway.

The 7-11 will be using the same equipment as Circle K, but at about half the speed. According to Kyle at OOS due to thinner cable used by 7-11.

Don’t be excited about the 711 charging network. The chargers they’re providing are wimpy compared to Superchargers and (assuming they work) Electrify America chargers.
Wheel for me but I am not going to pay extra for one, and especially not that one because I am also team stalk for shifter and turn signals, so this one is not enough for me to change my mind about not buying another Tesla
I have an X. I like the yoke. People say it’s worse. I think it’s just different not worse. I use the end knobs mostly to turn. People that complain about it are over the top. I’ve seen videos where people are flailing about with the yoke when turning. They are really overacting.
Wow Tesla extended warranty is expensive. I got an extended warranty for my F-150 back in 2017 and that was under $2,000 to extend it for 8 years 100,000 miles.
I think the reason Ford is not offering the Explorer in the US is because they cannot source US batteries, thus it would not be eligible for the tax credit. They are building a new battery plant in Michigan. Once that is ready and mass producing, we'll see more Ford BEV vehicles.
Just took delivery of the MXP this week, coming from an MYP. Was nervous about the yoke but I have to say I’m firmly team Yoke!
7/11 is smart, people are likely to go in and buy something while their cars are being charged.

Great piece as usual, Kim! I have a 2022 Model S and am definitely Team Yoke. My wife has a Model Y that I drive now and then and its round wheel feels a bit awkward for the first 3 minutes when I use it. It’s a relief when I get back to the yoke. I feel Tesla is doing a disservice to the yoke by not creating a video on the proper technique for using it.
This is all about Tesla managing the Osborne effect related to the upcoming next gen Tesla. To push as many Model 3's out the door as possible now in Q1, Tesla is pushing this narrative that the IRA incentive is going away. So what are they going to do in Q2 to make sales happen then? If the IRA incentive DOES go away, will there be another price cut to soften the blow? That would be my guess, but Tesla isn't going to tell you that now. And then what happens next year when the next gen comes out, which will presumably cannibalize Model 3 sales? A change in battery sourcing for the Model 3 to regain the IRA incentive? Or just more price cuts?
The retrofit wheel should be unique and more premium looking. Whilst they are at it they really need to fix the cyber truck wheels and wheel arch!

I dont think I would like a yoke, but who knows? I love the wheel in my model Y and I definitely wouldnt want fabric over the wood trim. From what I have seen the 711 chargers are way over priced. 55 cents kwh.
I don't even have a Tesla... at least yet, however... I'm more than happy to try the yoke. I already know I don't like the horn that being where it should be.

Maybe reduce the lock to lock to a quarter turn in each direction on the yoke.
That is only possible with a Steer-By-wire tech. Currently, all Tesla's have a standard steering rack that connects to the wheels mechanically, so not possible to do fully variable steering rack as Lexus has just done. See Jason from engineering explained test it.

seems that Tesla will likely stop selling the base 3 until they can convert it over to US-sourced batteries. The only other alternative would be to absorb the $7.5k, but I would doubt they will want to take the margin hit.

I Have seen on some steering wheels belonging to handicapped people ... an attachment ... It's like a p enis, sorry, ... but it is ... and it protrudes perpendicular to the wheel itself, pointing to the driver ... it can be attached anywhere on the circumference of the 'wheel' ... it also 'rotates' ... so you can grab it (with one hand) at any time for 'slow' maneuvering, and it will give you full control of the steering yoke should you want to go this route ... Best of both worlds, as you will also retain the 'full-view' of the forward-look towards instruments, and the road.
The extended warranty is a cash grab.

Great video. You 2 have great chemistry - quite relevant for a couple 😂 . Regarding Yoke: I have a Model 3 LR and so I have no experience with a yoke. My gut feeling is that I would love it IF it were based on steer by wire, as it stands now I am not so sure...

Tesla will drop the price on the base model or switch to different battery chemistry to get incentive back. Don't run out and buy a Tesla base model 3 just yet if you're in the market for one.
