Before I bought my Model 3 in 2019 I had a Kia Soul EV and it had 77 miles range. A few months after getting my Model 3, one day the battery tank was down to 80 miles left and I had a panic attack "I HAVE TO GET TO A CHARGER FAST!!" until I realized I still had more range left than a full tank on the Kia Soul. I haven't had range anxiety since.
I tried here in Italy and the Range test via the app does not return anything
Range test does not work thru the app in Canada either. Could be exclusive to USA
I think you are right. Doesn't work in Australia either
@@Rabs73or NZL. Or maybe it’s coming …..
…or Sweden 😢
does not work in France either
I don't own a Tesla but that thing to hook up your phone up pretty awesome
There is another way:
1. Plug in the car into a level 2 charger (e.g. at home)
2. Set charge limit to 100%
3. If charge level is at “percentage” mode, press on it to switch to “miles” mode.
4. Note the number of miles after “Limit:” label, in top left of the screen (3/Y)
5. Look online what the range that your exact car model should have when new.
6. Calculate %SOH (state of health) = (limit_miles / range_when_new) * 100
7. Or % Degradation = 100 - ((limit_miles / range_when_new) * 100)
I was going to reply saying the same thing as the above. This is so simple. Is there any way this is not an accurate way to check battery degradation?
You don't need to do all these unnecessary steps. Just divide the Mileage Left by the Percentage Left on your phones Tesla app.
150 miles / 0.60 (60%) = 250 miles
@@longmuskox4194yes, I do this too! It’s just slightly less accurate, as the current percentage is rounded to nearest integer.
@@pvdougthis method basically reports the degradation that is calculated by the BMS, but it’s really an estimate. To get the actual capability you really do need to cycle the pack and measure how many kWh can be pushed into the pack.
Using this method gives you different results than what she just received, so I'm thinking it's not accurate...
The ways I use to check pack health and status:
Recurrent: FREE, compares with fleet.
Teslafi: $50 USD per year, better data, more accurate fleet comparison.
Scan my Tesla, a few bucks for the app one time. Best if you really want to get in the weeds data wise.
1:40 oh, this is good information!
I am in the US and it didn't return anything for me neither on my model Y
The battery test works on Model S too
Why didn't Tesla spend the extra time to code the routine so that it turns off all of the recommended options for you at the time of using the "Battery Test" (HV Battery menu) function in service mode? It seems trivial and easy for them to code it to temp disable those options, and then resume those prior settings automatically for you once the rest is completed? That seems like an oversight and lazy coding to me?
Thanks alot Kim , i really like the way that you are explaining.
My 2020 Model S Performance L can do that within the app as you described.
Wow, Kim! On fire today. I love TESLOGIC! I've spoken with them (particularly Katerin), and they are just incredible people to work with, and they definitely know Tesla's inside and out. For anyone that needs taillight reprogramming for aftermarket taillights (for the original Model 3), they offer that service as well if you ask them.
They are great at the V2 of this Teslogic unit is REALLY impressive! Top notch software and app integration too.
It's not much of a test in the app, it probably just checks the estimated range and compares it to normal range
Hi Kim (again) - just finished the whole vid before commenting again - thanks for all the tips. FYI - the phone mod in front of your wheel (yoke), is illegal in Australia. We have state laws (almost all states) - banning the use of non standard / installed electronic devices in cars. It is specifically designed (and enforced) for people using mobile phones in ther cars (non hands free) and all the major intersections that allow it to be done by police monitoing intersection cameras. The first you find out is a letter in the mail with the State expiation notice (fine). Its becasue toomany people we not moving off from thelights while texting or operating hter phones - recent law - not going away anytime soo - until full driverless mode is authorised....years away in this country.
Not true in victoria.Drivers aid permitted as long as mounted in a secure cradle, and can briefly be touched.
Sorry to see that you live in a police state! I also noticed how the government acted and locked in folks during the illness period, a big disgrace according to me.
Wow I didn't realize my battery could degrade that much. So at eight years or 120 thousand miles if I can still get 210 miles on a full charge there's no warranty coverage
Thank you Kim. Really good information, and a lot I didn't know. New X owner here that's learning on the job.
congrats! You got the best Tesla IMO....and thanks for watching.
The range thing on the app didn’t work
Thanks for the handy info! Kim is the best!
thanks for watching!
Why cant Tesla just provide real time battery health.
I bought my Model X Long Range 3 months ago. They say fully charge 335 miles. My first fully charge they only gave 323 miles. After 3 months when I fully charge again the Model X gave me 315 miles. I see you have a Model X too. So I would like to ask you if my Tesla battery is normal or not. Please let me know thank you very much.
Range changes a Lil bit because you don't reset the trip counter, it's shows range base on how you consume de power...if you fully throttle allot, range estimate maybe lower a Lil bit. Sorry my English lol
@@ceresini Thank you so much
I had this done at 18% a week ago and it failed. It went all the way down to 4% and stopped for 1 to 2 hours before actually charging to 100%.
Hey Kim, Thanks for all your content. I know I'm off topic but was wondering if you can compare getting into the Aptera car to getting in a model 3 or Y? I have had a reservation for one for around three years now and have been wondering if it's higher like the Y? Thanks
Will this Teslogic setup 4:27 work with a non-cellular bluetooth active phone? I can't justify this for my primary phone, but I can justify getting an older (WIFI/bluetooth only) dedicated used smarphone just for this task. Also Recurrent offers another option to gain battery health status.
My MYLR June 2021 at 60 k miles , my max change was only 260 miles Home charge to 100.
Tesla tech said that was I spec with other Tesla same year and miles . Though he than say , attempt to drive down to 1-2 percent Sav to 100 percent . Do this 2/3 times
I was able to get the BMS error code to replace the HV under warranty. The issue I can see ia that SC to 100 for a daily drive end of the night to 30% .
I’m convinced there is no buffer for the Hv battery where as when you 5:01 sc to 100% . There should be 20 % buffer . Since Tesla recommends daily charge to 80
Huh?
FYI service mode battery health test is not available for legacy s/x.
Sadly service mode is much more limited here in Australia, no range test
the "Range" trick does not seem to work from France (typing Range ou Autonomie) ; it then asks me which of the closest service center I want to be contacted for this service request. I have a model Y from Berlin (August 2023)
Nice helpful video. What is confusing to most is that the range degradation on the dash is not the same as battery degratation.
correct, the range displayed is only based on a fixed EPA data, according to Tesla, so one shouldn't assume range loss from the displayed numbers, but the both the Teslogic unit and the Service Model option will give you numbers specific to the health of your battery.
Informative and entertaining as usual.
Thanks again!
Awesome video, great job 👏
Thank you! Cheers!
I don't worry about range much, Kim, because the average driver in the U.S. drives 39.7 miles per day, according to the most recent Department of Transportation statistics.
But, what’s most important is how much do you drive daily?
Hi Kim. Unfortunately doing the trick with 'range' in the Tesla app doesn't work for me over here in the Netherlands. It then asks for the address for which service is requested or the current location. Just FYI.
If it asks for an address for a location, go ahead and add it. I’ve been told it may still run the diagnostics for you and won’t make a true appointment for any location.
Can´t do that in the app in Sweden with the check
This does not work in Australia
After selecting "Range", it asked for my location so it did not work for my 2024 Model Y in Canada.
I have model Y, and the request range service did not work, it tries to schedule a regular service appointment with a tech
Is it smarter to lease or buy?
age old question....I think its really specific to each person though.
It's always financially better to own appreciating assets and lease (rent), depreciating assets. But some people like to modify their vehicles or keep them for a very long time, so in that case owning is better. If you get a new car every 4 years or so, then leasing is probably best because then you get a warranty. But with each new car insurance and DMV fees will most likely cost your more.
Will it work on 2020 model 3
Teslogic? Yes…super easy install on the 2020
Just divide the Mileage left by the Percentage left on your Tesla app. Example: 150 mi / 0.60 (60%) = 250 miles
Results are very depressing 😕
Mount your table there
Tesla intentionally doesnt let legacy cars that are approaching 8 year warranty to have this feature.
Quote from PDF "Offences against Australian Road Rules" - Rule 300(1) Using mobile phone while driving vehicle - 3 demerit points and a $1000 fine
Using the App doesn't tell you how much battery degradation your car has, making it useless. But, because of battery degradation EV's should have a standard minimum range of 400 miles. It's the only way people will give up their gas cars and fully embrace EV's.
