Hey Charles! When you change the tuning on your bass do you tune the strings up or down?
@@Nathan_North Depends on what tuning I'm going into. I generally just go for whichever one is closest and try not to tune up too high coz I might break the strings 🤣in that case I'd just put thinner strings on.
You need to play more Les Claypool basslines! (Ida Nielsen's was my favorite)
Play some live bass solos by Billy Sheehan
Ida all day!
Charles plays a funky bass solo
Me: This is therapeutic
Funk therapy 😎
@@CharlesBerthoud funkapeutic

@@CharlesBerthoud yes absolutely
@@CharlesBerthoud i don't even play bass i play guitar lol
My favourite part was when Charles played the bass.
Yes
That was cool.
I liked it better when he was talking
And he made it sound better than who he was copying.
THIS^^^
I'm 48, no musical background, I struggle with mild PTSD, excessive TBI, blast over pressure, concussive events...etc, etc, etc... symptoms from almost 20 yrs of military service....had a brush with music therapy in a TBI clinic to help me progress....always wanted to learn how to play the Bass Guitar, Primus, RHCP (FLEE) and funky Jazz lines hit me. I have found a new outlet and you sir, are an inspiration. Love watching all of your content...now I just need to buy a decent Bass. My son plays (regular) guitar and cant wait to surprise him at some point with a funky bass line one day while he is practicing. Keep CRUSHING it! Love watching the finger work you have!!!
I've had 50+ years playing bass but can't get near you ever especially your speed... BRAVO is not enough ...you are one of the few top bassists 🎸🎶
Charles trying to be Wooten 10 years ago is still a lot better than me trying to be Wooten 100 years later in the future
Not to be perpetuating a stereotype, but I don’t think dead people are the best at bass.
@@potatodog7910 I laughed harder than I should have at this
andri riki - Just practice regularly, and I think you're ready for Wooten`s solos much much sooner, a few years should help my friend. Think how long Wooten has been playing, he has done nothing but play 👍👀
Yes if you don't practice. No if you do. "Man this guy that practices a lot is so much better than me who never practices".
Really cool that he posted that part.
I've played guitar, principally, for over 39 years and yes, the world needs more bass and has been suffering quite extensively during my lifetime. I am so glad for players such as yourself and Dave504. You've been helping the world, as well as my family and I thank you!
We also need more guitar solos these days
@@finnvanderbar3935 ufile.io/x3wamxmf here's an outworldly solo from me that sounds cool in reverse too.
Lol dave504
@@truefaithinthenewlaw ain't nobody downloading random files, upload that shit to youtube or soundcloud
@@heygek2769 that's not a random file that is a legit site I already tested the link.
The Davie504 solo you did was so incomprehensibly clean. But with all the solos, the longer I think about your technique the more impressive it gets
Vic Wooten was with Bela Fleck at the first 'BayFest' in Mobile, AL, in 1995. I was right in front of the 1 ft. tall 'stage', about 3 ft. from Vic, and was AMAZED for their whole set!
Really cool of you to showcase the little guys like Davie504. Your an honorable chap. 👍🏻
Davie504 is easily the Victor Wooten of this generation.
Haaaa
@ no way
@ nope, he's the first and only Davie504 and This channel is the first and only Charles Berthoud

Awesome to feature Ida! One of my favorite funk masters, I don’t think she gets enough recognition.
Yeah she's underrated. I guess she used to be mostly a session player which can make it harder to become well-known.
I saw her a year and a half ago in Prague. Go see her live. I was blown away. She was so nice after the show as well. Signed stuff and talked to people.
@@Gallienkrueger1 Most truly great musicians I've met are also great people. I think the many years of practice and dedication humbles them.
@@CharlesBerthoud What's your excuse then?
Totally kidding, Charles! 😁
You seem like an awesome dude.
@@CharlesBerthoud You mean the gig with Prince, right? ;-)
As a musician myself, I can certainly appreciate the skill of great players like these… but I also temper it with the realization that most of the greatest songs ever composed were relatively simple. Food for thought… 👍🏻
Actually, so many of these songs *are* simple -- just played at a virtuoso level! 🙂
The tapping adds an amazing dimension to the instrument. I could listen to this all day.
Without Davie, not many people would know who charles is- mad respect for these 2 youtube legends
Without Davie Charles wouldn't be what he is today. He started pump content quite a lot after the initial kick boosted by Davies videos, which has really paid off
@@tetraedri_1834 tbh Davie and Charles are the perfect duo
Yeah I remembered when I saw Charles for the first time on a Davie video, he really stood out from the other Fiverr bassists
But Charles has too many piano in his house. _OH_ em gee...
Both of them are pals. Challenge videos are mostly not serious, just meant to boost views on both sides
I didn't use to pay any attention to the bass, but then I found your videos and I've been binge-watching ever since. You are so good at what you do and now I am even considering learning the bass. Keep up the great content!
Highly recommend it!
Your comment pretty much summarized the goal of my channel 🤣that's great to hear!
One of us! One of us! :)
Go get a bass, dude.
Ooooooooooooo on 9ol
Posting videos of him 10 years ago, just to prove he is not an alien from planet BASS !! GOAT
You, Charles Berthoud, are an amazingly talented and blessed bassist, I love and appreciate your gift and how you share it with Bassists the world over!
Legitimately can’t believe Victor Wooten is real that guy has unchecked levels of funk
that is a great way to put it lol
This amount of bass funk in one video is a fire hazard. Well handled.
Your Victor Wooten cover was amazing, you used so many different techniques flawlessly.
You're some player 👏
What I am more impressed about is how you have mimicked each bassists tone on your 1 bass. Great job dude!
You know you're a good bass player when you can embellish and improvise over a legendary Vic Wooten song and actually have it fit and sound good.
10 year old Charles was the best part 💖
He was better as a kid at it than I ever was as an adult! Frustrating to one's ego, namely mine! LOL
But the piano. Not enough bass. _Oh_ em gee. I'm talking over his Minecraft account and deleting it...
Impeccable timing, and so clean! I’m hooked! Much respect sir.
Beautifully done! Without exception, your versions are more musically satisfying.
He pretends that it's all difficult then nails it perfectly . He's trying to be humble but he's really just saying he can play anybody's lines no matter how difficult . His IQ really shows , Amazing talent and blessed soul .
that's why he's the only clickbaity youtube bassist for me.
@@dexterj5615 bad day?
As an alright guitarist that loves shredding guitar solos..
I have never been so jealous of the bass until I heard you play It. 🤘
Yep. I sent a link to this to my son, the "guitar" player.
I sure did like it!
Thank you, for sharing!
Amazing stuff. Love your versions.
Hats off in admiration for the innovators playing their unique styles and expanding the world of bass, but I'm always blown away at how Charles seems to play a clearer, cleaner version. Charles, you are a monster talent and a pioneer the instrument of BASS. Eleven out of ten from me.
I'll see that 11, and raise you 12!
This.
On one hand, he has the homefield advantage. It's his video, his studio, and you're comparing him to these older videos ripped from youtube or wherever else. On the other hand, Charles is an *incredible* bass player and producer, and better at sound engineering than some pro sound tech's I've seen. I don't know what black magic DAC he's got, but even the best audio equipment won't save you if you aren't also an amazingly clean musician.
true
xd
I agree.
Dude all of them were mind blowing. I love your style of playing. You are incredible
I like the Davey solo, just so much grove and melody, and your version was quite unbelievable.
You have become my favourite bass player on YT.
Ever heard of DAVIE504!?
@@gimmeurcoin7448 OP said BASS player. Not Drummer/Memelord.
Unsurprising
Man, you’re a BASS monster!! I’m planning to start playing the bass within a few weeks. Thank you for the inspiration!
Yes he is. I suggest you also to watch video of DAVIE 504 and you will be inspired by both.
How's the bass playing going?
Hey man its been half a year are u any good yet
Great solos versions. Amazing!
Brilliant. Loved how you really made each cover your own. Superb.
Holy shit, your version of I can't hold no groove has blown me away. It really caught me and I felt it could go on vor ever. Absolut remarkable job. Outstanding Sir, outstanding
Yeah, big mental health improvement over here!
Charles I love your channel, thank you so much. I don’t even play the base, you’re a true inspiration. Keep going champion.
Delightful mate and thanks for sharing 👍
Davie's wink after he played "THE LICK" slayed me.
You're right, I didn't notice that at first! Lolol
LOL!
I didn't realize that either.
FFS.
@@cellocarlos 00000
Ye, he knew exactly what he was doing, that man is an absolute meme king XD
Ida Nielsen's tone is just incredible
That absolutely shreds! Nice work!
You made my day!! Great selections! Can't have enough bass funk!!!
It's hard to say this about Victor, but you definitely improved all three of the solos with your own touches! If you aren't in the top 10 bassists of all time I'll eat an old hat!
Absolute savage. I love how you "enhanced' Davie's solo. Pretty incredible!
All of them are great ... Outstanding work ...
Ok, the Victor & Davie really did it for me, I loved both those grooves the best!
I am going to say, you are probably the WORLDS BEST BASSIST right now! You seem to be able to do it all. You deserve HUGE recognition for your style, skill & tone, you play beautifully. Please teach me.
AMAZING!!!!!!!
Davies solo was my favorite. Sometimes letting that offbeat silence cement the funk is the best sound above how technical it is. Loved your interpretation of it too, your bass guitar always sounds so clean.
The slide at 4:21, the attention to detail with the camera work, I am going to have to take a break for a bit after that, unbelievable. Thank you so much for doing these. You are definitely a top dude.
You sir Charles, have amazing talent!!!
Great music. You're talented and humble. A sign of being a genius.
It's great to see the difference between 10 years ago Charles and current Charles
This is the 1st time listening to you I genuinely must say your amazing! I don't say this lightly I've been playing for 40 years (drums) taught by the best and amongst brilliant musicians so I believe I can say, the way you changed davie 504's version was laid back made to look easy love it thank you!
This was absolutely amazing.
Dude, that last solo...speechless. I never knew a bass could make some many different sounds!
You make it look so easy! Congratulations on all of your effort paying off, you are an incredible musician!
This davie guy is pretty good at bass for just starting recently
Amazing physique man , can I make like this at home lol
@@light5891 thanks, if you have a pull up bar for sure, that's all you need to get started
Davie as in Davie504? Dudes been playing bass for a decade+ lol. Not super recent.
@@mulberry8882 woooosh for you
I like your playing and tone best out of all of them, hands down! awesome stuff!
Mind blowing dude! Amazing!
I'm a simple man, I see Funk Bass, I click!
I’ve seen Victor live 3 times. He’s a great player and a great person.
Jealous!!!!
Love your style of bass playing! 👍
I want to know how you all do the low notes plus the 5th fret harmonics so cleanly! WOW! I've never seen that technique before. I would love to see a video just on that. Clearly there must be some kind of way to push down on the lower string while keeping that finger above where the harmonics need to be played.
Just a fantastic video all the way around! I'm jealous: You get to show off some of our century's (and last century's) best bass players, then play their stuff, adding your own twist to them. Mad respect for all of you!
Holy funk! You're an incredibly skilled bass player! Thank you for sharing this content!
Dude you are the best bassist I've ever seen or heard, hands down.
My life is being changed by these magnificent funky bass solos. Great plating!!
It's fun watching you and Davey having light hearted digs at each other. Also, love the base of course.
I love Ida's triplets/percussive notes... smooth.
Honestly, all three have something special!
Wooten: phenomenal groove and that "funn(k)y noise" you do gets me every time! 😁
Ida: really compliments your ability to play clean and tight. 💪
Davie: fun and catchy. And of course 'the licc'! 😎
You inspired me to practice again. Thank you!
Even 10 years ago you played too freaking awesome
We need more than one like button for each part of the video.
Amazing dude! You have surely improved! Comes with dedication which you obviously have and practice!
My man. We always need more bass. I find your bass skills one of the best to hear. Curing my deficiency.
That little smiley at 1:40 just had me in tears for no reason at all, whenever i lease expect it they appear
The funny noise can really turn your day around
That's the timestamp when I paused the video, tapped like, and continue enjoying :)
Between you and Davie, I get all the inspiration I need to work on my playing.
That last solo was amazing!
Thank you.
Awesome, especially Dave and you Charles, keep up the best...
That fact i found out about Charles from a Davie video and now he's playing Davie's solos but better, is kinda mental. Charles is the new bass boss.
Charles has more technique!
Tappp,s King.
Yeah charlie is the master of youtube bass now
Davie is amazing but from the start Charles was always better in a more trained and technical sense. It's music though so it's all good at that level
This brings back some memories! My wife, my son and I drove from Toronto to New York at the last minute to attend this event. I remember seeing Victor's performance and all the others as well but the only other performer's name I can remember now is John Patitucci. Victor's drummer, who had done quite a few gigs with Shania Twain and her band, made the comment that for him the scenery playing behind Shania was much better than behind Wooten.
Loved it.... bravo to all!
Lovely, you've made them more interesting and catchy. Cheers, Charles!
This video is literally Charles flexing on all these other bass players and dear god I love it
Thats every video.. All Charles does is play the most complex s*** using pretty much every single bass technique known to man lol.. TBH, I prefer more simplicity in Bass.. Even using just 1 or 2 styles can make some of the coolest riffs, rhythm's and melodies. Watch Alain Caron D Code.. one of the COOLEST bass lines and then when a band comes in on top, its just magical. Just 2 techniques needed.. Slap and pluck.
I cant wait for the day someone flexes on Victor Wooten
@@xant8344 That day will never come 😆
If Charles says he has improved you immediately know something epicc is about to happen
Incrível! Excelente som e muita habilidade!
Outstanding phraseology and clarity of expression. Viva Berthoud!
Amazing talent! Your own takes are always more melodic, sound cleaner with better timing. Simply a treat for the ears. Thanks so much.
Your all solos are just amazing man...great job
Charles knows his music, knows his audience, and is indeed a performer. But that smile in the middle of a groove - that's the real deal - no faking that. Slap on son.
Charles, you are awesome I loved them all
Yesss, finally, I was looking for this video where you cover the SLAPP. It’s so interesting to compare you two. Take same amount of talent and put it into totally different circumstances and we’ve got you two. To me you sound the best when you play together. But I would love to see a colab where you are together live and just compare techniques. Davie could use someone to pull him out of his comfort slap zone and experiment a little. Every time he threw bit of tap or even rare harmonics into a song it sounded beautiful. We need more of that. You would be great for that job. And he seems to be that kind of a guy who gets better with every new technique. God, you two could change the world! It’s a shame you’ll never gonna see this but just in case you do, I’ll leave it out here. Here’s to new Victor Wooten and uh, whoever Davie resembles the most! 😊
The outro was my favorite ❤️
Amazing fills and improvisation!
Seriously, bass needs more role models like you making it cool and showing ppl how amazing it is
Man all three of these were badass. I’d love to see you do a funkier version of Stu Hamm’s Linus and Lucy or maybe slap version of Teen Town by Weather Report!
I think Stanley clarke does slap teen town
@@svenhellqvist4614 Stanley might. I know that Marcus Miller does.
Loving Ida. Awesome!
I am absolutely changed. Thanx, I needed that!
I can hear the absolute discipline in your playing. True pro.
I'm a retired pro drummer. I've worked with some great bass players in my time, but you are fantastic. Very impressive. How about a Dixie Dregs tune? !
OMG! I thought I was the only Dixie Dregs fan remaining alive! So great to hear their shout out! So cool brings back a lot of early eighties memories.
