Great video. looking to when this becomes available to purchase. I'm glad u talked about how the lock button disabling all buttons doesn't bother you. I feel the same way. i liked it before the update. I need the lock button to lock ALL functions. People don't have a mind of their own. They parrot one person who says the lock button shouldn't disable all functions until someone unintentionally hit the record button to stop recording and you don't realize it till later. I never understood the hoopla about the side screen. even FX3 shooters use monitors. . Most people don't think for themselves any longer.
@@mikolajjordan That’s the one that was included in what I received but I’m not too sure. The Blackmagic website should have the listed items based on the kit ☺️👍
Can you show how the USBC cable is connected? Using USBC for power and image is one of the 2 most innovative things about the monitor.. So if I get it right, the included cable has one straight secured connector and one L-shaped secured connector right? And when you use the screw, is it still flimsy in your opinion? And if I got it right, the USBC cable is only included in the 2 more expensive bundles and not in the monitor-only one?
The flimsy USBc connection I mentioned was the one I use with my smallhd monitor (USB c to HDMI) instead of using SDI. The USB C cable with locks from the Pyxis Monitor is quite sturdy and yes you have a straight end and an L shape one. I use the L shape for the camera port. :).
How does this compare to monitoring using the Blackmagic Camera App on the iphone? I am planning to install another PYXIS and am wondering if I should buy PYXIS Monitor for both.
One thing to keep in mind is that display port over USB-C isn't a feature that's standard on all devices. I believe the USB ports on the device ie Pyxis, have to be hard wired for it as well as the cable needing to support it.
Hey Flo, thanks for the vid. I'd be curious to see how you rig this out with the DJI Focus Pro Creator Combo. I guess maybe you'd have to have the screen to the side to allow for the Lidar... but I find having the monitor on top, positioned how you have it as optimal and having to make allowances for the Lidar as a bit annoying.
Hey mate, thanks for watching!! I haven't tested it with it yet but keen to do so! I think yes the screen you could be on the EVF bracket on the side or maybe there is room if the monitor is on top of the handle and the lidar on the rods from the handle unit underneath.
Nice video. Quick questions: is there a way to set the screen to mirror without flipping it upside down? And I like the way you’ve got it mounted on the front of the handle. Could it turn around and face the subject in that configuration?
Thanks!! Not sure what you mean by mirror without flipping it upside down but yes you can have it mounted at the front of the handle and face the subject :)
love your videos for BM gear. How do you see the new Pyxis as a solo-operator travel video camera over the BMPCC line or the FX3? I currently have the FX3, but loved the simplicity of use and color of the BMPCC4K. Also, what are your audio solutions when rigging out the camera?
Thanks!! I would always pick the Pocket line or 6KFF for travel content. For audio it depends on the shoot but usually shotguns either a Sennheiser mke600 or rode NTG video mic.
13:55 thanks for the review. When you mention the lock button only locking for the screen and not the button, you mean only the integrated screen, or both the integrated screen and Pyxis monitor? If it also locks the Pyxis monitor, that would be quite a shame.. best
Great insights. As far as SDI protocol goes, I’ve been shooting with SDI monitors on BMD cameras for a long time and never bothered with powering down/unplugging cables. Maybe I’ve been lucky haha. I would love to see if the USB-c viewfinder feed can be used as a regular HDMI out for Wireless? I love using the focus peaking on BMD cameras
Fantastic mate, thanks for sharing! What about latency or delay? I do some work where I need the image to update very quickly, or basically more or less instantly show me what the sensor records. Will this do that? Cheers
Have you noticed any downsides to the monitor. Pretty much the whole review was positive other than the sunshade. Im going to buy this but I'm sure there's a con
So far so good! Haven’t used it enough for a proper review but honestly Can’t think of anything honestly. It does what it’s supposed to do and does it well whilst being light, easy to use and cheap ☺️👍
It feels like the screen on the pocket cameras so very Blackmagic. Easy to use and see and very clear! The smallhd feels superior in quality but the image is very similar. The smallhd does have a better look because of the material but same resolution and might have more contrast. Hard to tell as I haven’t used both at the same time.
Would swivel mount be compatible with the other top handle having hot shoe mount? I wonder if I should get a kit if I have another top handle I like, not the Ursa Cine top handle.
@OfTwoLands that's a shame since the USB c locking cable is not included in the Basic kit (if someone needs just the monitor and the cable). I don't like the fact the top handle has just two mounting points and takes so much space. Could you try if the monitor works with any other non Blackmagic USB c cable ?
Thanks for the review. How much would you recommend getting the basic mounting kit you have in your video versus the cheaper alternative of no mounting kit? Is it a huge convenience factor to use the mounting kit over finding a way to mount if yourself?
Excellent! What a game changer the Pyxis has become after being criticised so much early on. Now the only thing they can whinge about is the rolling shutter for all those whip pans we need to do.....
Here is my hands on and first impressions video of the new PYXIS Monitor!
Did you order one? And if so, which kit?
Cheers,
Flo
Agreed; I'm also looking forward to not worrying about the SDI protocol with my Pyxis.
☺️👍
Been waiting for your coverage on this mate, looks awesome! So keen to get one soon, plus the pyxis of course ha!
Thanks mate!! Honestly it’s such a nice addition. Can’t wait for you to get your hands on this kit 🤩
Do you ever shoot with a shoulder rig or just handheld?
@@NeonShores I do, yes. But I prefer easyrigs, tripods and gimbals outside of pure handheld.

Does it come only with that angled-to-straight cable?
@@mikolajjordan That’s the one that was included in what I received but I’m not too sure. The Blackmagic website should have the listed items based on the kit ☺️👍
It better, without the angled cable you can’t use it on the PL mount version of the Pyxis.
Great video. That monitor looks awesome. Thanks Flo!
Thanks for watching mate!! Really is 🤩
I was wondering, would you be able to mod it so you can get a shoulder mounted camera setup?
You can place the monitor pretty much anywhere you want with a long cable.
Where do your buy blackmagic top handle?
You can get it on B&H for example (i've put the link) and with other retailers too I imagine :)
as a lumix shooter this is all very interesting
Thank you for this video. How is the delay on the monitor (if you have noticed any)?
Merci!
@@ThierryGibralta Thanks for watching! Haven’t noticed any delay so far. Feels like using a built in monitor ☺️👍

There are ways to place the lidar right above or under the lens or mattebox. I created a 15mm rod adapter so you can position it easily.

Yes - with a proper USB-C (Display Port capable) to HDMI cable, you can plug into the front port and output to any HDMI device.
Does Pyxis Monitor zoom-in to check focus when you double tap the screen (like the camera’s screen does)?
Yes it does ☺️👍
