  • Today I ordered everything for an L-Mount Pyxis 6k from Blackmagic design. Even though I own a lot of camera accessories, the final bill still racked up quick. Granted not everyone is going to for a lot of the accessories I have, but this video is a good example of what it could cost if you want to get the most from your PYXIS 6k and have as few compromises as possible.

      Recently I have been testing the LIDAR system that I talk about in the video. It works pretty well as is better than Mirrorless AF’s in some circumstances, but 90% of the time thats not the case and super critical sharps are missed, even when the setup is precisely calibrated. Eye tracking AF really is something to behold. If DJI could nail that with the LIDAR, game over - but thats a loooooong way away.

  • @jvburnes

    Finally someone not dumping on the Pyxis. I'm actually very interested in the L-mount because I do experimental work with vintage lenses, some of them anamorphic. I think I'll setup an l-mount to M42 adapter, then to a Helios 44 then to either my Sankor 16D (for 2x squeeze and panavision-style blue streaks in 6:5 mode) or my Bolex 16/32 for 1.5x squeeze in full open gate mode. With a 3:2 sensor that yields a final 2.25:1 frame which with a minor crop takes it to 2.39:1. With the new Pyxis monitor that takes care of one of my other issues with the Pyxis, though I wish you could disable or blank and protect the built-in monitor. The internal monitor seems like its going to take a lot of handling damage over the years. That's crazy that you are going to imax mode, but its fantastic that its possible.

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  Місяць тому +2

      hey there, great comment! That all sounds super interesting. XLCS designs has a greta new “full metal jacket” cage for the PYXIS, which has a blank out protection screen for the side monitor. You should check it out. Tell Will I sent you over. I have a funny feeling the side monitor has something to do with appealing to the vertical shooting crowd which seems to be all the rage these days. And it wont surprise me that when the camera does start shipping, some update will emerge enhancing vertical shooting features. Maybe a 6x5 final aspect ratio from a 2:1 squeeze. ????

    • @jvburnes
      @jvburnes Місяць тому +1

      @@cinechimp Yeah I was thinking of using a GH7 in open gate because that's a 4:3 sensor and it yields a perfect 2.4:1 cinemascope with a 2x anamorphic. Problem is that its open gate resolution isn't supported in anything but h265 and local recording. You can't even export it via HDMI external recording. I guess I'm just asking too much of it.. That's why Pyxis looks like a logical step up. It's basically an entry-level true cinema cam.

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  Місяць тому +1

      Totally agree with you - that's a misstep by Panasonic. They add LOG-C but no Prores 4:3. Doesn't make much sense. I don't own a Panasonic camera, if you cant output the 4:3 OG, how are people correctly monitoring the image? Just the little flip screen. On this point, yes the Pyxis is a much better option.

    I watched this video and I've been shopping for a Sony FX30 and I went to look at the Pocket 6K Pro, then found a deal for an FX30 for $1530 and I got the FX30 primarily for green screen to use the Sony 10-20mm and 18-105mm f/4 G PZ G lens primarily for the Sony in-body lens correction being vastly superior, and they have no focus breathing. Dual Native ISO is the best for f/5.6 lens because you don't have to turn the light sup really high.

    I have a Pyxis on preorder, but then the 6kFF got a crazy sale and I bought one. BUT I've found myself constantly going back and forth with either stripping the 6kFF down to just body+lens OR rigging it up with a cage and a ton of cables, which I don't like. The Pyxis would solve some of that issue for me, I feel. Remember, if you shoot s35 crop sensor on the Pyxis/6kFF, the rolling shutter is actually better than the Pocket 6k Pro. I've also found myself not really shooting a ton of 'low light' as this sensor doesn't really excel at that.

      I have the focus pro and Canon AF focus cameras a I can say without a doubt that lidar is a long way of the quality and consistency of any eye AF enabled camera. @@cinechimp Thanks for the reply :) Only one of my use cases would need AF, covering debates (of which I would be a participant). One debate format is where they speak at a panel at the same distance, so that wouldn't need AF. But other times a speaker will step forward from the panel to center stage. They would never come closer than a full-length shot (6K open gate would be ideal).
      Once they've stepped forward do you think that lidar can hold focus on them and track them smoothly as they move around? What if they stop moving and a panelist starts yelling and waving their arms lol?

    • @cinechimp
      @cinechimp  Місяць тому +2

      Oh yeah the DJI lidar has a tracking system and it works pretty good, but under 6 feet is where that super critical focus thing would be the issue. And you control it from the handle or the remote focus hand wheel. I still think for your application, a Sony or Canon would be much better, because you can do things like remote transmit to you phone, so when you need to switch focus to the next speaker, you can just tap your phone screen and stat tracking another subject, change exposures if need be and start stop recordings. Plus they will be much better in low or poor lighting situations.The Canon APP works really well, never tried it with a Sony and of course BMD has no tracking AF. But hey thats still a lot to think about if your are participating at the same time….Sounds interesting what are the debates about?

    I recommend the Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig for those who want to film from their shoulder. The design allows me to rig V-mount batteries so they hang behind my shoulder which makes for better balance front to back, and lowers the overall center of gravity. A few other things for new owners to keep in mind: 1. It’s important get the word out that the 12V connector is different than what we’ve been using on the Pockets. It’s a 2-pin Lemo connector which is very standard and should be easy to source. 2. It’s not a bad idea to have at least one BP-U battery in your kit as a failsafe. BM cameras don’t lose frames when switching power sources, so for extra long event recording you can have a V-mount feed and if that battery needs to be swapped out then the BP-U can keep the camera running during the swap. 3. If you choose L-mount and don’t already have tons of glass, then keep the NiSi Athena lenses in mind. They’re optically excellent, well built, affordable, and the L-mount version incorporates a drop-in filter design.

    Legit question, are those K&F Solid ND's actually any good? I bought a super cheap set many years ago, 77mm before I started getting serious and they had horrendous color, clarity etc. Aboslutely unsusable for pro use. I since bought Formatt HiTech superslim IRND's and they're amazing. Though I'm planning on selling those for the revar cine VND.
    Im asking because the Revar cine covers up to 8 stops which there are some cases in the brightest daylight where I know I might need 9, maybe even 10 stops.

    And regarding CFExpress cards. A couple of days ago I had an AngelBird 512GB card completely short out on me. It was the weirdest thing because all of a sudden my full frame CC started blinking on and off. I changed batteries and restarted the camera several times but it wasn’t until I swapped out the card that the problem went away. In this case, I was only doing prep work for an upcoming shoot and did not lose meaningful footage. But just a reminder that despite reliability improvements over the years, cards can still die. And especially if you’re going to film on a card as large as 4TB, back up during breaks. Put yourself in a position where a card failure (or a card getting lost or falling down a street drain or what have you) will lose you the least amount of footage.

    It's really strange that BMD's design team got to the point of figuring out how to fit an ND array into a small, hybrid design, but then rolled back on their own progress when they moved to a body design that is purpose made to have an ND system (See any of Canon's C series or Sony's FS/FX series). Also, Mini V-Lock batteries are so common now that going with something proprietary like a BP-U is kinda short sighted. It's like one step forwards, two steps back.
    The placement (I would argue, even the existence) of a large monitor on the side was just silly. It's not even something that's a niche use-case like operator controls (what operator wants to use a touch screen right beside their face??)- It's just a bad industrial design to have most of one side of your camera body to be a vulnerable LCD surface that cannot be protected/flipped etc. They did it right with the micro cinema camera, they just needed to have that setup for the larger form factor. Someone on the design team was clearly stubborn about not having a design without a screen.
