Here is a comparison between the new Blackmagic Pyxis 6K and BMCC6K.
Since I’ve started to share content using the new camera one of the most popular questions I received was How does it compare to the Cinema Camera 6K and which one should I get?
So I thought I would make this video to hopefully help you make a decision.
I am going to focus on, theirs similarities, the differences, the pros of each of these cameras and share my thoughts on which one I think you should get.
I will also show you some quick image comparison including Rolling Shutter, low light, with artificial light as these are things people asked me repeatedly since I received the camera.
Let me know if you have any questions :).
Cheers,
Flo

Here is a comparison between the new Blackmagic Pyxis 6K and BMCC6K.
Which one would you pick and why?
Cheers,
Flo
Fun fact; in the black magic Facebook group, I discovered you can use the USB-C out on the front as an HDMI out if you get a USB-C to HDMI adaptor and then don’t have to worry about blowing the SDI ports
I did see that! That’s pretty sweet :)
Great review, nice flow and pace. As a lumix user i'm happy BMD offers L-mount. As Lumix also supports BRAW, i might jump to these cameras in the future.
Thank you!!
I have both S1 and Cinema 6k, just keep in mind the Cinema 6k has 6k 60p at 21:9 aspect ratio and 6k 48 at 17:9.
Great comparison! Thank you for all the Pyxis content you’ve been putting out, they’ve been very helpful and insightful. Really seems like a dream camera for independent filmmakers. Waiting for my Pyxis pre-order to arrive from B&H. Really excited!
I just have one question, when plugging in a monitor through SDI, do you respect the LIFO (last in, first out) protocol? Meaning, do you power everything first before plugging in the SDI BNC cable and vice versa when powering off.
I know this will be less of a headache/worry once the Pyxis monitor is released with its USB-C display port feature.
Thanks so much mate, glad you enjoyed it and find it helpful! BH orders are starting to roll in I think :)
And yes, I try to follow it but sometimes I forget and leave the cable on before powering on/off.
well done. I feel very much there same way. I was fortunate enough to get a 6kFF on sale, so I'm going to keep using it for those low-profile moments and plan on using the Pyxis as an A Cam. Having matching sensors but in different bodies really does help keep things consistent, from color to lens options. I DID decide to go with a Mofage Poco VND PL to L Mount adapter for the Pyxis, as my only other extra purchase.
Thanks mate!! And I totally agree about consistency having those two different bodies with the same sensor/image.
I thought about the Mofage too, keen to hear your thoughts!
I have the BMCC6K and have the same plan as you to use the Pyxis as my A cam, The CC6K is great with just a lens to not attract attention when shooting in public.
If I had to choose one or the other I think the Pyxis would be the one for me.
Totally! It is such a great and versatile combo!
Thanks for the comparison!! Taking your time to show us what’s best. I will stick to my 6k until I have enough money for the Pyxis. Respect to the 6k. My opinion Pyxis is good for rigging and usage 😊. But image quality wise, a common not cinematographer won’t noticed the differences.
Thanks for taking to time to watch it!!
The 6K cams are still amazing and I love them :)
I think that since the Pyxis already has mounting points for top handle etc, the overall weight might not be heavier than Pocket.
Pocket needs additional cage to have some mounting points and it needs some sort of external battery plate. You can easily double the Pocket weight with semi-rigged out form factor.
It is slightly heavier yes, but not that much depending on the kit for sure! The Pyxis is super versatile!
No way. The Pyxis have more dequeeze options than the original. I am sure BMCC can update the firmware for the original one. I have to use different monitor for 1.5x. Come on man. BMCC please update the firmware for the original.
Yes, was pleasantly surprised too! It would be awesome if it comes to the BMCC6K too :)
Excellent video. It raised some things I had not thought of between the two cameras. So very useful.
Thanks so much, glad it was useful ☺️🙏
Good to see Pyxis sensor no longer has the slight magenta shift that’s most noticeable in the shadows
The lack of internal NDs could be a long chat to discuss, but instead the pixys is a really good camera for many reasons.
Which box camera has internal NDs at $3000? Why keep bringing this up?
@@jerrydorsey5951if a smaller camera than a box camera which is 6k pro can have it under 2000 then why can’t a box camera at 3000 that too from same company can have it ,after all you not that smart my man 😂
@jerrydorsey5951 my boxy C70 has ND's at that price range.
My Fujifilm x100V has an internal ND
@@mjgfromDDDc70 new is over 3k easily. Now used, yes you can find one at 3-3.5K
I just got my hands on the Pyxis, excited to start putting it to work. It will pair as bcam to my Ursa mini 12k. But I am curious if it will eventually replace my 12k
Nice!! Would be a great combo for sure. I think it depends if you need faster frame rates and internal nds.
thank you for your work
Thank you for taking the time to watch :) !!
Great presentation as usual Flo! Can the pyxis shoot in vertical mode or was that left only to the non cube bodies? Thanks in advance 🎬
Thanks mate!! Unless I missed something I don't believe you can do vertical with the Pyxis.
I'm so close to buying the Pyxis.
But I usually film outside or on the move. My only worry is that I won't be able to pack the Pyxis properly in a backpack :D
The Pyxis is super easy to fit in a backpack. I posted photos recently where I took it in my backpack whilst on a bike :)
@@OfTwoLands oh nice! Gonna check that out.
Thanks!
I'm pretty sure it's personal preference but what would you think is there better but for solo documentary work?
For doco work I would pick the Pyxis!
Unless you only shoot run and gun or outdoor activities.
@OfTwoLands They should wait a 1year and half before releasing the pyxis pro. I have a feeling that one might be 8K and use the sensor of the 12K Cine, but will have a max resolution of 6K or 8K. but with ND.
Maybe I should return my PYXIS 6K and wait but waiting on BMD is not a great game to play lol. So I might just stick and then buy another meaning I have a Rigged out BM Studio Cam 4K G2 for very light work, 6K pro for outdoor work, PYXIS for Documentary and more controlled shoot. while the PYXIS PRO / CINE will come and be my main cam to them all.
URSA 12K CINE is not for me too bulky and am not doing Film work as of yet.
You shouldn’t make camera buying decisions based the idea of a camera that you just fully dreamed up.
I think the same. Pyxis Pro might have 8k with NDs and more frame rates options. But I wouldnt return a working and great camera like the current Pyxis for a hypothetical one.
What about the Pyxis batterie life?
About 1h continuous with a 35 BPU, so probably 2 with 70 and so on! Pretty good. I shot for about 1h on and off and only used half of the 35 BPU.
i’m really kicking myself for not buying the bmcc6k when it was on sale 😔
do you know if it will go on sale again?
@@redecl8232 it was a crazy sale!! Unfortunately I have no idea 😕
Is the viewfinder port of the Pyxis the same connection as the EVF port on the BMCC6k?
Not it is not. The Pyxis viewfinder port is a USB C type.
2:55 Best DBZ character!
Haha totally! Bought that figurine in Japan 🤩
Hi Flo. Question: from the dual card slot of the Pyxis during operation, can both cards be set to record simultaneously? From your perspective in using both cameras I do agree of its use case. Cheers!
Hey mate, I haven't tried but I think it is only continuous recording!
Can you compare it to the imagen quality of the bmpcc 6k, I know that is a diferente senzor size etc but im interested in the imagen quality
Thx for the comparison! Is the side screen able to be turned off to save on battery?
Thanks for watching!! I don’t believe you can but you can dim it down.
Did they fix the cmos smearing when underexposed/lowlight compared to the CC6k? I assumed that was something they were tweaking with the pyxis and why the CC6k was on sale at the time.
I don't shoot a lot of low light content but to me it looks either slightly better or the same.
I’ve got a 6k full frame with the mc-21 and a Sigma 24-70 EF. Turning on the IS switch makes it unusable, the lens looses connection all the time. Do you happen to have that lens? Does it work for you on either of them? Thanks, love your content
Thanks!! I have the Sigma 24-70 but I have the 2.8 NON IS version so no problems so far. I have been using that adapter with various lenses IS or nor and native or not with no issues.
@@OfTwoLands Looks like a problem only with that sigma EF version. For me no IS is a problem for my run and gun work. The other lenses I have work fine. Tried a new adapter and lens, and even another 6k full frame and seems to have the same problem. Thanks for your answer!
@@Jdmecowould be interested to know what other IS lenses you use with the 6K ? I was looking at the 24-70 but worried about compatibility issues!
@@lombardy3274 my canon 24-105 II and my 16-35 f4 are working. But not the sigma 24-70 2.8. Some people report that it’s working with the Viltrox adapter…
@@Jdmeco how is the IS performance on the 24-105? I’m looking for something that will smooth out shakes when walking to follow/track my subject.
They were so close with the Pyxis but the removal of built-in ND's is honestly just a dealbreaker for me. I believe the Pyxis will take the place of what we were hoping would be the eventual "4.6K G3" but some aspects of it are a backwards step from the Ursa and that makes it a tough purchase.
You do get a full frame sensor with open gate and better anamorphic options so it depends what you need I think.
The next or Pro version will have NDs hopefully!
Bonjour merci pour votre travail je le trouve super intéressant et complet j'aimerais savoir auriez-vous une autre chaîne UA-cam avec le même contenu mais en français car jai l'impression de perdre certenne information
Sinon merci beaucoup pour votre travail
In the Pyxis the image looks more sharper. Thanks ¡¡¡¡
Thanks for watching!
In which image you think?
@@OfTwoLandssur le plan ou tu es assis derrière ton bureau , c’est sûrement une question de feeling mais sur ton visage je préfère la pyxis …. Après ça reste trop léger pour dire qui est mieux que l’autre
I have looked at the video more carefully again and the images are the same. If you don't know which camera it is, it is impossible to differentiate them.
Have you seen any difference? Thanks
The Pyxis low light seemed to have slightly more noise. But otherwise it looks great. There’s no such thing as a perfect camera
"There’s no such thing as a perfect camera" 100%! This is something people tend to forget a lot, especially on youtube haha!
First ❤
Haha thanks!!
No continous AF
Nope
amazing sensor???? LOL
Yep, I love it! Doesn’t mean you have to ☺️
