I love this channel, please never stop making me feel insecure and second-guessing my abilities inspite of my several-degree-spanning tertiary education that nearly killed me.
It's always nice seeing that more work and toil goes into something than you first anticipated. Gives you a better appreciation for the actual artistry of it.
This cannot be overstated. I remember the days when I thought I could take any old camera and make cinema quality videos. Those days were exactly 18 minutes and 11 seconds ago, plus the time it took to read your comment and post mine.
this video taught me that i need to stop spending hours watching reviews of cameras i cant afford and just keep filming on my phone and hold it really stable!
Tech youtubers that shoot in red is so wacked. bro, you are uploading this to youtube to bit crush it, where most people are watching it on there phone. vertically. If the bitrate and color depth was high enough you could shoot in 720p and nobody would notice.
720p 🤪 maybe for your grandpa eyes. The normies on their phones wouldn't notice but many of us do and appreciate a nice crisp 4k image. Yes youtube compression sucks but youtube 4k still looks miles better than youtube 720p.
@@TheUberKevlarYes it does, but UA-cam will always play videos in 720p by default, if you don't manually set it higher. I bet the majority of people don’t know, notice and change this.
Tier 3 and proud of it, but I’ve also shot for massive corporations with a $500 used lens… knowing how to use your tools is always more important than the equipment itself ;)
fantastic vid!! i teach basic media production in higher ed and i can’t tell you how many times i’ve had to wean students away from what they’ve “learned” from red tech bros. and frankly i learned a lot with this too! thanks for making this ❤
I think what really gets me is that I almost guarantee you someone out there has managed to convince their client to budget for renting an Alexa Mini LF for a promo video that just ended up on places like TikTok and LinkedIn.
just had a friend dump 10k into a setup and hes a beginner 😭 i warned him to take it step-by-step and even invited him over so we could review alternatives... but now hes in debt and still tryna figure out how it all works. its truly an epidemic. I didnt spend that much until i was 6+ years into my career
I did the same honestly. I bought a bunch of stuff just to find out what really works for me. It's costly. But you get to save yourself 7 - 8years of trial and error in like 6months. So it all works out.
I think I remember recently Linus talking about how unnecessary it was that they were using Red cameras for their channel and AFAIK stopped using them in favor of just normal A7S’s or whatever. Anyway I think it was over for them using Red when they thought it was a good idea to try to water cool one and destroyed it permanently.
i used to work music festivals and doing the interviews etc, you know the red bro's comments were spot on... and they always absolutely had to tell everyone how much resolution the camera had.
As an actual union AC, this was awesome and felt so pointed… but tbh working with the DSMC 3 bodies lately and getting a chance to work with the new digital negative… I’m a fan lol plus I don’t have 80k for a Alexa 35 package, I could afford a raptor however. But if I had a dollar for “that cameras a beast” I’d be able to afford it by now.
I'm a person who watches these videos for the knowledge even if I won't ever apply it. Cameras are like mics where there are definite tiers between each item. However, there seems to be some type of compromise unless you pay the price. It makes sense then that many film students stay stuck between tiers 4 and 6, they want to create content but they lack the funding as well as lack the initial knowledge of what makes a good camera.
It's always great to see that regardless if you are shooting stills or cine the make it or break it part of the process is knowing your equipment, knowing light, and not being an idiot.
you NEED to make more videos like this. I'm so tired of people that act like they like filmmaking and all they ever shoot is desk footage of the newest iphone
This could have been one hell of a "go to video" about video cameras, if not for the fact, that the narrator sounded like all he cared about, was listening to his own voice. For the love of God; slow down.
Finally someone sees camera bros on UA-cam for what they are. Clout chasers. I am always seeing some dude cover the quality of the fx3 knowing nothing about exposure and cranks the shutter to compensate for sunlight instead of using an nd filter and getting the motion blur right
Hi SBN3, first, gotta say, you’re probably my biggest inspiration atm. Second, I’m saving up for a used bmpc hopefully and use some old ass lenses, so uh, yeah. This guy just made the easiest and quickest sub ever. The fact he doesn't care at all about the big names on youtube is great. I have been looking for a guy like this for cameras! He reminds me of Dankpods but for cameras.
While Tier 7/6 is plenty for the average UA-camr, I definitely feel like there's something nice about someone who cares about (and understands) how to get high quality, and put enough pride into the work they do to make their work look good. Is it necessary to get the video done? Not even remotely, but it looks nice, so I stick around more.
Excellent and Informative video once again. Not shocking to see that I didn't know the majority of these cameras, and the information provided will be/is definitely a great continuous reference to go back to.
Bro managed to exude the most stereotypical quintessential personality of a jaded cynical cinematographer who just hates anyone who dares to touch a camera 😭🤣. Nonetheless I appreciate the education I got from this video.
Man did I love watching this. I make simple compilation video's of airplanes landing and taking off, but I am NOWHERE near a videographer. Seeing these tears cracks me up and actually makes me realize that my Nikon Z8 is barely capable of anything cinematic.
Like that you included the last segment about how it's everything outside the camera itself that makes a "movie looking shot", especially after you butchered my boy Micro 4/3's the way that you did haha. Obviously, it''d be nice to have the more expensive camera's, but I think the more important thing for me is knowing exactly what is provided for each camera, exactly what features are being added per price, and making that judgement call based of of what I think I can get away with. So, in parallel to your last remark, I personally saw Micro 4/3's are a blessing. I know exactly what are the trade off's as opposed to using a full frame camera, and it made everything a whole reality for me. Yes, I "have" the money to buy a full frame camera, but the reality is my productions would actually look LESS film like if I spent the majority of my budget on the best camera body and lenses, as opposed to investing a part of that money into literally EVERYTHING ELSE that makes a "movie looking" shot: lights, lighting attachments, c-stands, every imaginable piece of grip gear, audio gear, etc. I'm perfectly fine with having less dynamic range, less information in my shot, etc. Those aren't the most limiting things to me, but not having any gear to control the lighting in a scene, that's something that can't be forgiven. This video does help me paint a really good picture though, as I continue in my career it's exciting to imagine the upgrades I'll slowly be acquiring as the ball continues to roll. Also, I like the big dick energy, I'm confident you know more to this craft than any other creator I've seen on this platform, so you just earned a subscriber.
I bought 5DmkII back when it was new (for photography). The video capability was ground-breaking. As a consumer like me being able to shoot full frame video with any lens I had (like my Zeiss Planar 1.4/85) was absolutely wild at that time. That said, the video was a big compromise and I am really amazed that some folks managed to shoot commercial stuff with it. To make the video possible, the camera took every third line of the frame and stuffed it into the video, which led to severe moire and artifacting. Last year I replaced that camera with R8 which shoots 4K at 60 fps, does 4:2:2 log and the bitrate is in hundreds of megabits (5DmkII had 45 Mbps). Still the toy tier I guess.
Thank you! Excellent breakdown.Yup, not much to add - had many on the lower tiers like everyone else here no doubt, day-dreamed about others - still have a Sony A7III - know friends who will only work with Arri etc. So yeah, thanks, you're spot on, and funny re the Red Camera Groupies!
those little shits that u described at the start, thats my friend rn XD. im 15, shot wildlife since I was 9, so I know A LOT, im shooting a 7dmkii, with a 600mm lens and getting AMAZING photos, my friend(who's in a church, just wait, that'll come into play later) got a r100 CUZ I TOLD HIM TOO, I taught him how to do photography in august 2024, and now this kid is going around his church taking photos, going around r/photocritique and giving the shittiest critique ive ever fudging seen, hes saying im wrong with everything I taught him, Lightroom CC is ass...(according to him) so thanks for opening my eyes XD love this vid
