I believe that if someone has already been convicted of violent sexual crimes against women and children, for the sake of the innocent and vulnerable in our society they should never be released again.

I really appreciate how you paused the story to give some tips on how to avoid abduction. I started martial arts when I was around 11 and one of the first things they taught us was NEVER go to a secondary location with a stranger - fight with everything in you to keep it from happening. That lesson saved my life about 2 years later. I will be teaching my kids that when they're old enough. This case is so heartbreaking - it's terrifying as a woman and mother that there are monsters like this walking the same streets as us. Thank you for the great coverage of the case
This applies to all situations even when being Abducted abroad... Your best and maybe ONLY chance to escape is right away. So you def were taught well, although I highly highly recommend not relying on Martial Arts to save your life (Most of it isn't very useful in actual situations especially if your attacker is larger and stronger or even worse has a Knife/blunt object or even a Firearm) but a Handgun CAN. Glad it saved you in that one situation though!
You don't have to wait. If they can walk they are old enough. I taught my child to yell as a baby if anyone tried to touch them that wasn't me. It saved her life one day. We were in a store and I had my hand on the cart and a man reached between the cart and me acting like he was going to reach for something on the shelf. He instead was going to take my child out of the cart. He touched her and she screamed. I shoved him back and screamed pedophile, security, help, security. When people looked I pointed and yelled he tried to steal my baby. He ran. Two other times someone has tried to take my child. We were stalked in a toys r us and again at a grocery store. When I was three a man tried to take me out of our car. Be ever watchful and vigilant. The more you pay attention the more you will see. May God keep you and yours safe.
I especially loved the tip they gave of creating a safe word, that can help give a child the ability to determine whether or not to trust a stranger. My brother and I set up a similar plan to avoid ur grandmother ever getting scammed by someone pretending to be one of us, except instead of a safe word she is supposed to ask us how our sister is doing (we have no sister). The idea being that my brother and I would point out that we don’t have a sister, while someone attempting to scam our grandmother would just go with it and say something along the lines of she’s doing well. I can’t think of a way to use that as a way to prevent abduction, but if someone can I’d love to hear it!

I have three sons, the oldest two are 12 and 10. When they have their friends over, from the second the child walks into my home, I take full responsibility for that child, right up until I release them directly into their parental care, am I free of that responsibility. I’ve been told by several parents ‘to let them walk home, it’s up the rd.’ and I never do, either myself or my husband will get them home & this is exactly why.
I know a builder who's the same. He tells the kids parents that while they're at his house he's going to treat them like his kids. Including not tolerating any BS

Thank you for caring for other kids that come to your home. My kids are grown but I always watched their friends while at my home. I always made sure they got home safe. I took care of them like my own. I always watched my kids well into their teens. I was a single mom and never had a boyfriend or even dated after my divorce. Sometimes things happen in the home or out so keep a close eye on your kids. The friends mom was wrong to let Carlie leave, she should have drove her home or called Carlie's mom before Carlie left. So heartbreaking.💔😢
@@aliciaramos4747 I was thinking the same thing when they were talking about teaching a 'safe word' to your children to prove its ok to leave with another person. Back when employers thought parental responsibilities ceased to exist while working ( I remember my mother being panicked her boss would flip if I had to call her at work for any reason) and before cell phones, a safe word was at least some form of verification but now if my child and I haven't spoken directly on the phone I didn't say it. The same goes with any adult responsible for my child. They say they're allowed to do something I haven't specifically approved with you beforehand you best be making a call to me to verify. An actual voice call too not a text. I would absolutely blame the friends parent if something happened to my child because they chose to believe my 11 year old had permission to leave and walk home by themself and allowed them to do so without confirming with me. I had my best friends two early teen girls living with me on and off for years before I even had a child of my own and I called her to verify everything those girls claimed she gave permission for them to do. If it was something I was uncomfortable with I still wouldn't allow it even if their Mom said they could because she wasn't there to be responsible for it, I was.
Can we talk about how AMAZAING her mother did on that phone call to 911. You can tell she's distraught but is holding it together to give very clear, detailed information based on all the last known information she had. Most people panic and freak out and cant concentrate on those details and can take longer to get help. Her mother, despite her obvious distress, fought through those emotions to do everything she could to help Carlie. That is a sign of strength that I don't think most people could ever have. What an incredible mother.
When I lost my oldest (who was 4 at the time in Walmart) I was an utter basket case they kept asking me what she was wearing and her hair colour and I couldn’t remember anything but she was beautiful and had curly hair 👩🏼🦱

I remember this case so clearly, especially the video. The way he just led her away as though it was a normal interaction is bone chilling. In the news coverage I heard “Never allow yourself to be taken to the second location” for the first time and I’ve never forgotten it. I’m not the only one, shortly after this a young girl was almost abducted but, because she heard the same thing, she fought and screamed so the would-be abductor got scared off. They found him with horrifying tools that were meant for her. I have no doubt that Carlie and her tragic story saved at least one girl’s life.

I took my two youngest children into a shop, while we were there, a rep from a sweet company came and asked the two if they wanted to try the new sweets, my son, grabbed his sister’s hand and screamed as loud as he could, I was behind them, I had taught them so well about stranger danger!! Carlie was my sisters best friend. I can't believe it's almost been 20 years😭 This was incredibly difficult to watch. Carlie's death destroyed their family and indelibly effected ours. Joseph P. Smith's death sentence being over-turned and reduced to life w/o possibility of parole, re-opened the old wounds. Joseph died recently in prison 👏 too humane for him, but glad none-the-less. Yes! For everyone watching, please remember this, just in case: do EVERYTHING possible to avoid being taken to a second location!! Your odds of survival drop drastically once that happens, but if it is absolutely unavoidable or unsuccessful, remember to leave your DNA all over that second location! Do whatever you can; spit, leave your blood, pull your hairs out, rub your clothing against a surface… even if you don’t survive, this could be the thing that allows detectives to catch the perpetrator. @@Repentance79 This reminds me of that one case of an African American child whose body was discovered in a cave. Some teenagers went there to do drugs and happened upon her body which was decapitated and her limbs were cut off. She still hasn't been identified and is still known as Jane Doe. Its a very old case. Also reminds me of another South Korean case where construction workers found the body of a teenager in their construction site. I don't remember if her head was decapitated too but i do remember that the killer had sliced her hands off. She was identified by her name tag that students wear and her uniform and bag. They never caught her killer or recovered her hands. Its so scary to think about it.
Thank you for covering this story! Carlie lived only a few houses away from me. I was 10 at the time. People still leave flowers outside of her house, even after her family moved. McIntosh Middle made a memorial for carlie the day they announced her death and its still there today. I would pass it everyday at school. My best friend was good friends with carlie. Eventhough I didn't know her personally, this hit too close to home for me. my parents still live in the same house to date and driving by her house is heartbreaking still today. This story shocked the city of Sarasota, and has served to advise young kids in the area, including mine, her memory lives on. Her family fought hard for the death penalty but in the end carlies heartbroken mom died 4 years before that monster. It was also suspected that Joseph might've already claimed a victim in bradenton (tara Reilly-case remains unsolved) only 4 years before killing carlie. Heartbreaking :'(
I remember when this happened. My parents showed me the footage and used it to teach me about stranger danger. They told me if somebody ever tried this with me to scream and cry as loud as I could. It scared the shit out of me.

I took a self defense years ago from a police department. We practiced scenarios. One thing that they taught us was how predators can paralyze and weaken victims with intense verbal commands and threats. Surprisingly, even though we were practicing scenarios, it was actually scary and it did catch you off guard. But the more we were exposed to it, it help to lessen the fear. They found in past cases victims were terrified and paralyzed by a predator using using foul language, threats and aggressive intimidation etc. Watching the footage it looks like Smith did that. She was just blindsided by it. I hate that people like Smith can breathe air on earth. I know he's gone now but he got what 16-17 years to live longer than Carlie. We need stronger laws for sex crimes perpetrators committing against men, women and especially children!!!

Her mother died in 2017. A mothers grief is unimaginable. My mom died of alcoholism because my brother killed himself. My dad was murdered a few years after she died. I have been through the most horrible grief for many years but never will I understand the pain of a mother who has to bury their child.
This horror happens all to often. Six years ago I was smoking a cigarette leaning against a tree with my daughter only six feet from me trying out her new skate shoes when a car slowed down behind her and passenger door opened as a guy made to grab her. I yelled run, which she did right back into the store as I put a rock in their rear windshield. Driver took off almost leaving his friend behind. No plates and never caught. It's one of those things that many think won't ever happen to them till it does. I drilled my kids on what never to do, even more so after that day.

@@Lola-AreaCode212 California, border of Millbrae and Burlingame. Not a bad area, or at least not back then it wasn't. Not even the first incident either. From my understanding, with all the train upgrading, a ramp was moved so cars that got off came from bad areas, and would rob nearby homes and take off. Add kidnapping attempts, they could grab and be on the freeway in moments. Can't be done now, as they closed off that road and you basically have to pass a smaller PD, to access those stores and blocks now.
I was 1 grade below Carlie and went to the same school. This is terrifying and heartbreaking when it all happened. We created a beautiful butterfly garden in her honor off the side of the 6th grade wing. May she rest in peace

What this faled to mention was Susan was the one woth a drug problem before and after Carlie who had no problem selling her daughters ashes for 50 bucks, selling all her daughters furniture shortly after her death, and leaving ashes behind at a drug house. The responsibilities she was referring to, was more or less acting as her little brothers mother. She did more cooking and cleaning and caring around that house than anyone, but she would have never left her little brother willingly. She was too pure of a soul to be on this earth.

As a brother of 3 sisters and a father of 2 daughters, its a crying shame that we live in a world that a 14 yr old girl and in some cases grown women can’t even walk a mile down the road by themselves in broad day light w/o the possibility of being kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed because of evil men amongst us. My mom was always so worried about me as a kid, I was so trusting and friendly to strangers and she absolutely GRILLED the rules of avoiding abduction into me. -the use of a safe word -never get into unknown vehicles -be as loud as possible -run as fast as could be -and if all else fails fight and scratch with all your might if being forced into a vehicle (That one’s especially sad considering she knew if a kid is abducted they’ll likely be murdered, and she wanted the killer to be caught if it happened) These things can seriously save lives and it’s important to engrave in your children as sad as it is
Not trying to start a fight, just wanting to add something. And I totaly agree with you. I think, even if the one torturing you isnt a stranger, it still would be at least equaly heartbreaking. (And now I cant stop talking, so I continue, but its not really connected to the comment. Torture, abuse, rape, beating someone up, or whatever... harming others should just not be a thing that happens. To continue the story, Carlie's mother was so distraught, she got on drugs , became a hooker, and overdosed a few years later. This man ruined so many lives! Just horrible! He had daughter of his own too, what a creep!

This was a very close friend of our family. Growing up we were always at each others house…I was young but I still remember. This happened in my town and it was huge news. I remember being glued to the updates and driving all over in my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse trying to help find her. The morning after her body was found I saw they changed the sign outside her school to "We love you Carlie".. It really hit people hard and inspired them to teach their kids even more about stranger danger. Then social media came along and made it even easier for the depraved psychopathic assholes to get to our kids! Please monitor your kid's online usage and don't let them walk alone 💖
Ya I live in SRQ too and Susan was a drug addict and narcissist. She made everything about her. Poor kid never had a chance. If this hadn’t happened, her mom’s lifestyle would have destroyed Carlie’s life anyway.
this is why i take my dog EVERYWHERE with me now, i have a giant bull mastiff who always protects me. A few years ago when i was 13 i was walking my dog and he was off the lead and i suppose the man didnt see him. He tried to grab me and pull me around the corner to where his car was parked with the boot open. My dog heard me scream and instantly ran over to protect me. He went for the man and scared him off. he saved my life, i love him with all my heart ❤️❤️
I remember this case So well when Nancy Grace covered it on Headline News. For some reason, the video of a man walking up, grabbing Carlie by the arm and walking away with her has haunted me all these years. 😢

Why didnt the friends or friends parents not offer to take her home. She was 11. They should have phoned the parents of the girl first before letting the child walk out on her own.

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE RUDE I cannot stress this enough, so many of us teach our kids that good children are polite and respectful to adults no matter what while still trying to teach them stranger danger and it will straight up get them killed! Teach your children that if they're not 100% certain that the adult is safe, they can and should "be rude" - refuse to go with them, don't do as they say, run away, and, if they're grabbed, kick, scream, shout, tell them to fuck off, bite, whatever it takes. Teach your children you will NEVER be angry with them if they're just trying to stay safe, and that no half-decent adult will have a problem with talking to their parents or letting them talk to their parents, and no safe adult will ever try and get them to keep a secret from their family. Criminals often target children who can't talk to their parents for exactly that reason - it's easy to isolate them, gain their trust, and lure them away with promises of something better. You cannot teach your kids that you'll wash their mouths out with soap if you catch them being rude then expect them to defend themselves.

I somewhat agree but I believe it depends on the age and character of the child. It's not that black and white (rude and polite). I was a very polite child, quiet, obedient...an introvert. But I was also very serious and not that trusting. In danger, I would probably understand the situation I was in, but would be too afraid to make a noise and would go along.... While my son is completely different from the way I was as a child and I am worried he would be even easier to kidnap. He is a loud, hyper, cheerful, trusting, extroverted kid. While I struggled to communicate with extended family and peers, my son has no problem reaching out to strangers on the street and starting a conversation. He is outspoken and sometimes rude, but only to people he's comfortable with (aka me), so I have to teach him to be respectful and polite, while also explaining not everyone is a good person. He's still little and we go everywhere together so there's still time to prepare for when he's older and able to walk outside alone. But yeah....a lot depends on the child alone.
This is why I don’t trust ANYONE with my kid. Her friends mom was responsible for her since she was under her care at the time and didn’t take care of her. This could have been prevented.
I live in Cleveland, where Ariel Castro lived. He kidnapped 3 girls and kept them for over 10 years. Amanda Berry was one of his victims. I remember the DeJesus family stopping cars with her picture asking everyone and anyone if they’ve seen Gina. They stopped me at an intersection near the Castro house (of horrors). Those poor girls, Amanda, Michelle, and Gina endured abuse for over a decade before they were discovered. These types of people are PURE EVIL.

How was a guy like this walking free when people are STILL in prison for weed and minor strike 3 offenses? I know it varies by state buy this is ridiculous. Our prison, healthcare, education, and CPS agencies are all broken and its sad our government doesn't put our taxes to better use.
I ask myself this EXACT question everytime i watch some shit like this. Like people i personally know have gotten 15+ years for drug charges an I've seen people who do disgusting acts against innocent children get less then that. It blows my mind I Will NEVER understand. 😢
This happened in my hometown and I also knew Joe Smith. He actually gave me a ride when i was 15 years old to a friend's house and he made a commitment about ine of the young girls at my friend's house saying "I really love blondes" looking back now i wish I could have done something. I was just visiting last month and every time I go there I think about her..RIP ❤️
The death penalty should be reserved for child predators, rapists and serial killers. And should be available everywhere. Those people shouldn’t be allowed to either walk free or waste our tax payer dollars while they’re alive behind bars.
I agree with the premises of having harder punishment for those people, but imo death penalty is too easy. We don't know what's after life, maybe nothing, in which case they'd just stop suffering. Good old medieval torture devices should be reinstated for some individuals.

My daughter would've been 10 yrs old this Sept. Instead, her mother decided that texting was more important than actually paying attention to the road while she was driving and she had a really bad wreck that caused the death of my only child. I couldn't imagine the terror that mother felt. My heart goes out to her. I know the pain of burying your child. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

We would drive past that same neighborhood, that same car wash, everyday to get me to school and at the time I didn't understand why I wasn't allowed to take the bus anymore or visit friends anymore... I'm 28 years old now with two twin daughters of my own and I still live in absolute terror that something like this could happen to them. Rest easy Carlie. You were such a light.
This happened in my home town. Her body was dumped behind a church literally 1000 feet down the road from my house at the time. Her memorial is still there to this day. Such a heartbreaking case
Poor girl! I had never heard of this case till now, it's so scary the way he just walked off with her in broad daylight! In the early to mid 90s when I was between 9 through 11 years old, my family moved to a very quiet street where all the houses were higher and further up from the street, as they were built on a hill. The school bus would drop me pretty far from my house and I was the only kid who lived on the long winding street, the other kids lived right near the bus stop. I enjoyed the long walk home, it was so peaceful that I often was in no rush, but I knew my mom whom was at work would be worrying and calling the house to check if I was home yet. I remember i used to walk holding my house key jutting out between my fingers so that if someone stopped and tried to grab me, I could jab them in the eye with it,lol. I'd tense up everytime a car passed me a little too slowly. But the street wasn't where something happened. Our apartment was a rented basement apartment in the back of a large home, to get in I'd have to walk up a long steep driveway, go through a breezeway to the back of the house where our door was. It was creepy because the family upstairs was never home and the backyard was just miles of woods. One day as I passed through the breezeway I heard noises coming from the garage, I turned to see an unfamiliar man peeking at me through the glass window of the door leading to the garage, he opened it and said "Hey Come in here " in a slurred voice, I forgot all about my "key weapon", panicked and ran towards my apartment door wondering if I'd have time to unlock it and get in before he reached me? Should I run to the woods instead? I had seconds to decide as I could hear him stumbling behind me. It must have been my lucky day because I reached my door and it was already unlocked, turns out one of my older brothers had come home sick early from school and had never locked the door behind him, I slammed the door in the mans face and he started banging on it, I yelled for my brother to call the police. The banging stopped after a few minutes and we waited in fear till the police showed up. They found the man an hour later hiding and intoxicated in a tool shed. He had a knife on him and had been driving drunk, left his car somewhere in the neighborhood and the police believed he had just randomly picked our garage to hide in. Later i was told he had a record and had kidnapped and assaulted his niece a few years prior. My mom moved us out of there not long after. It was one of the scariest moments of my life at that point and as anyone can tell by the length and detail of this comment, it's something I still vividly remember despite the 30 years since it happened. I often think of how different the outcome might have been had my brother not been home and that door would have been locked.
Omg I can’t even imagine. Terrified just reading that & remembering myself at 10. I’m afraid I wouldn’t have had a lucid thought at all about how to escape that situation. So glad you’re safe.

I am a mother of 6 children and this is one of my absolute fears! While devastating and heartbreaking, I am going to show this to my children in hopes that God forbid they ever face this situation, they know what to do. This serves as a stark reminder that evil lurks everywhere.💔
I always share these with my kids. Not to traumatize or scare them, but to make them aware of what’s actually out there. Me telling them isn’t always enough.
Yes be very afraid and play the lottery as you have a better chance of winning then you do what your fearful of. Who knows YOU could even be the next kidnapper. I don't think you should trust anyone including yourself.
My mother did this to me growing up and its made me a very afraid person. A grown adult who is terrified of even sleeping alone in her own home. I know your fear is real, and your intentions are good. But from my personal experience, this was not a good approach 🙈
@@bathroomsinging8728 Not everyone reacts the same way. I’d rather arm my kids with the knowledge of monsters than send them out against them unawares. We always discuss the cases as well and how it could be handled. I don’t want them to be naive because the threat is very real. We’ve been followed on multiple occasions with ME with them, and they’ve told me of instances when they were alone. The world is a scary place sometimes. And while kids don’t need to see and know everything, I do think knowledge of some things is crucial for them to function safely in this environment. We don’t not talk to children about fires because of fear they’ll be scared. They’re shown the risks and dangers, then given advice on what to do if they are faced with it.
When do we as a society start putting overwhelming pressure on the justice system for releasing these scumbags back into society? Sick and tired of hearing about cases like this it is beyond infuriating.
The judges should be required to take the criminal into their home for years if they're going to do a light sentence, and if the criminal reoffends, the judge should be arrested and sentenced too. I'm tired of them enabling predators to escalate to m/urder.
He had only committed stupid minor drug and fraud crimes until he did this unforgiveable act. He should have just been taken out and shot behind courthouse. But he was just one of the 10's of millions people on drug or other non violent probation in USA when he did it. The justice system is broke because we have things like mandatory sentencing of 10 and 20 years for a drug crime but a rapist can get out in 5. That was not the case here.. No red flags in the system about him being violent.
“City of Sarasota sanitation site” is one heck of a sentence. My deepest condolences to the victim and her family. I can’t even imagine if this happened to my family. I would be filled with hatred, despair, deep sadness, and SO MUCH more. Why can’t people just live their life without damaging or ending another’s?
I feel so bad for this girl and her family. As for the video giving advice on how to keep kids safe, my parents gave my brother and I a "password" when we were young. My dad instructed us that even if it was his best friend, (who we knew well and considered an uncle) if he didn't have the password, we weren't to go with him. I have now taught my kids the same and the password is the same that it was for us when we were young.
And also, the safe word thing is a good trick in the event a stranger approaches a child but i would go as far as to say to NEVER accept a stranger saying they were sent by your parents. If you have decent parents, they would have told you ahead of hand and likely would not choose a total stranger but somebody the child is familiar with. Also if ever in doubt, kids have phones these days, so if the person truly is a good person, they will have no issue with you taking a couple minutes to call your parents to confirm.
I vividly remember this case. Seeing the actual abduction is something I will never get over. That poor, poor child must have been scared and panicked beyond description. I sincerely hope she found peace in Heaven.
I live in a rural area and I was 10-11 at the time of this case. We lived close to a car wash I'd use as a shortcut myself and it chilled me to the bone and I really understood WHY my mom told me not to do that.
I remember when everyone was accusing her of have been talking to him online and that she was ok going with him. Poor baby was so confused and in fight or flight mode. The fact he has 3 young daughters makes me even sicker that he may have done stuff to them before. Sick bastard !!!

I'll never forget this one. My girls would compete in a music festival at a church in Sarasota every year in late winter. When they announced her body had been found at a church and named the road it was on I recognized it right away and my heart sank because I knew we would have to drive by it on the way to the festival. Just a couple of weeks after Carlie's body was found I was driving my girls down that same road. As we passed the church I saw a ton of balloons, flowers, stuffed animals and a sign that read "We love and miss you Carlie." It was horrible. And to watch the killer in this interview wanting to smoke and talk to his family makes my blood boil. Carlie's mother died from a heroine overdose in 2017. Just heartbreaking.
Wow that poor mother… and now the father is left without a daughter and a wife, sadly he’s probably not going to be any better off. This man never should have been free in the first place, RIP to all those affected.
Someone tried to abduct me from school when I was 5 yrs old. They called the office and had my full name and information and were trying to get permission to come get me from school. Luckily, the secretary in the office knew me personally and had a bad feeling so she didn't let it happen. Thank God for that woman. Mrs Bailey was her name. It still makes my heart race when I think about it and that was 35 years ago. I don't remember the actual event, only what my mom told me when I got older.
My husband and I have always been over protective of our kids. They could have easily walked to school when they were in primary school but we still drove them every single day and I am so glad we did.
Glad to hear he died. Was sad to look up this case and see Carlie’s mother has also died (actually before Joseph). Also big props to Joseph’s brother John who testified against him several times and seems to have continued to speak out against him. He also thinks Joseph killed another young girl who’s case was never solved.

This is why I’m absolutely against young kids walking anywhere alone, there are so many predators looking for young vulnerable kids. I myself have experienced a scary situation while picking my kids up from school, it’s a block away and a man in a van was following me and asking me if I wanted a ride while walking with my kids (I was able to dodge him & thankfully nothing happened) however, can you imagine a kid walking alone?!
The video conveniently left out that she had been communicating online with what she thought was a teen boy. She wanted to walk home so she could meet up with the “boy.” It turned out to be a man. She didn’t deserve what happened, but the full story is not being told. Carly was deceived, groomed and manipulated online to meet up with this man.
When I was 10, 11 & 12 years old I used to walk home from school through the Indian reservation in the middle of the desert instead of taking the bus. My mom used to cry & beg me not to walk alone from school, but I couldn't understand why. This was back in the 70's & when I hit 13 years old...I understood why it drove my mother crazy. I'm so very sorry mother for making you fear & worry for me. I'm sorry for ALL mothers.

This happened in my town, it was absolutely horrific and so heartbreaking. When the guy that kidnapped her returned the station wagon he was borrowing from a friend it had scuff marks all over the roof the whole entire car was trashed you could tell a brutal attack happened inside of it. I was like 16 in this happened and I think about her everyday when I drive past her house or Evie's car wash. Rest in peace You beautiful angel 💕🥺
Best crime encounter advice I've ever been given, came from a Sheriff friend. Know what you're gonna ahead of time. Empower yourself with a worst case scenario plan in your head for them. They've got a plan for you, don't they? If you know it's gonna happen, you decide where and when. Take as much of their plan for you away from them as you can. Do everything you can to either get away or make them do it now. No crime scene number two. If they're gonna take your life away, take away their timeline. Fight mean, leave scars!
Never ever let a child walk home alone ever, not in this day and age! If she runs off, call her parents immediately and if possible, get in your car, and try to catch her. I have family members that age, and they are in no way ready to take responsibility for themselves! Just like this very scary case, in can happen in the blink of an eye!
@@RepentfollowJesus you're right about the dogs. Once a bond is made between a child and a puppy, when that puppy grows to adulthood, the dog will protect that child from harm with a vicious fervor. I've seen it firsthand many times. Even the smallest of breeds can be quite effective too.

@@ivandzaja6251 I wanted to say the same thing... but still, living in Central Europe, I feel we are much less aware how easy it is to actually abduct a child (or even an adult), if someone decides to. Like in USA, when they know this is happening, they have mechanisms how to act quite quickly and surround the area etc., while in Europe, police would probably wait until it's too late. And the same with general public - if I read discussions about lost children, it's often much more about "how did they dare to leave, I would spank them once they are home" than real concern about their well-being. Which is sick.

I bought my daughter a cell phone at 6 when she started school! Myself or fam waited for her at the bus stop up until 8th grade! She hated it but I didnt care! After 8th grade she was in sports and was at school til picked up then she got a car at 16! These stories break my heart and even though my daughter is a freshman at OSU today I still check her location faithfully! Nothing is guaranteed but Im not making shit easy either! God bless these poor families! I can't even imagine!!

When I was in highschool I knew a girl named Chelsea who would have survived if the offenders probation officer checked on him and someone knew that he had been staying at his mom's which was near children. He was Totally off their radar and killed two girls It helped create Chelsea's law for others but wasn't worth it.

I personally also blame her friend's mother. The girl was eleven years old and she let her walk home for a walk that would take an hour and a half, wtf! When children are playing at your house you are responsible for them period! I don't care if she said she was allowed to walk or not, her safety would be my responsibility. I hope that mother thinks about the choice she made for everyday for the rest of her life and feels guilty. If it were my child I could never forgive her! 😡

I remember when this happened. The footage was all over the news and it was one of the first times that surveillance cameras had caught something like this so clearly. It freaked a lot of people out to see something like this happen in real time, and especially to a child. I had a friend who was a child psychologist, I remember her watching it and yelling at the TV "Put your phone down! Oh god, look up! RUN!!" Carlie was distracted by her cell phone as she walked behind the carwash and didn't realize the guy was walking towards her till it was too late.
That's what I thought too. I'm in Tampa and was in high school when this happened. It was kinda the beginning first her then Jessica . I had never heard of abductions like these happening and then they were just popping up.

I really appreciate how you paused the story to give some tips on how to avoid abduction. I started martial arts when I was around 11 and one of the first things they taught us was NEVER go to a secondary location with a stranger - fight with everything in you to keep it from happening. That lesson saved my life about 2 years later. I will be teaching my kids that when they're old enough. This case is so heartbreaking - it's terrifying as a woman and mother that there are monsters like this walking the same streets as us. Thank you for the great coverage of the case
Yes! I wish I had put my kids in martial arts. They’re ok, but I know it can help with bullying, too.
This applies to all situations even when being Abducted abroad... Your best and maybe ONLY chance to escape is right away. So you def were taught well, although I highly highly recommend not relying on Martial Arts to save your life (Most of it isn't very useful in actual situations especially if your attacker is larger and stronger or even worse has a Knife/blunt object or even a Firearm) but a Handgun CAN. Glad it saved you in that one situation though!

You don't have to wait. If they can walk they are old enough. I taught my child to yell as a baby if anyone tried to touch them that wasn't me. It saved her life one day. We were in a store and I had my hand on the cart and a man reached between the cart and me acting like he was going to reach for something on the shelf. He instead was going to take my child out of the cart. He touched her and she screamed. I shoved him back and screamed pedophile, security, help, security. When people looked I pointed and yelled he tried to steal my baby. He ran. Two other times someone has tried to take my child. We were stalked in a toys r us and again at a grocery store. When I was three a man tried to take me out of our car. Be ever watchful and vigilant. The more you pay attention the more you will see. May God keep you and yours safe.
I especially loved the tip they gave of creating a safe word, that can help give a child the ability to determine whether or not to trust a stranger.
My brother and I set up a similar plan to avoid ur grandmother ever getting scammed by someone pretending to be one of us, except instead of a safe word she is supposed to ask us how our sister is doing (we have no sister). The idea being that my brother and I would point out that we don’t have a sister, while someone attempting to scam our grandmother would just go with it and say something along the lines of she’s doing well.
I can’t think of a way to use that as a way to prevent abduction, but if someone can I’d love to hear it!

Her mother died of an overdose. Everything about this case is so so devastating. It could’ve been prevented if the people had locked him up when he was supposed to be.

For ~YEARS~ prior, the president of the US was a Republican, the Florida governor was a Republican, most of the the Sarasota judges were Republican, and most of the justices of the Supreme Court were Republican. I have three sons, the oldest two are 12 and 10. When they have their friends over, from the second the child walks into my home, I take full responsibility for that child, right up until I release them directly into their parental care, am I free of that responsibility. I’ve been told by several parents ‘to let them walk home, it’s up the rd.’ and I never do, either myself or my husband will get them home & this is exactly why.

Thank you for caring for other kids that come to your home. My kids are grown but I always watched their friends while at my home. I always made sure they got home safe. I took care of them like my own. I always watched my kids well into their teens. I was a single mom and never had a boyfriend or even dated after my divorce. Sometimes things happen in the home or out so keep a close eye on your kids. The friends mom was wrong to let Carlie leave, she should have drove her home or called Carlie's mom before Carlie left. So heartbreaking.💔😢

Back when employers thought parental responsibilities ceased to exist while working ( I remember my mother being panicked her boss would flip if I had to call her at work for any reason) and before cell phones, a safe word was at least some form of verification but now if my child and I haven't spoken directly on the phone I didn't say it. The same goes with any adult responsible for my child. They say they're allowed to do something I haven't specifically approved with you beforehand you best be making a call to me to verify. An actual voice call too not a text. I would absolutely blame the friends parent if something happened to my child because they chose to believe my 11 year old had permission to leave and walk home by themself and allowed them to do so without confirming with me. I had my best friends two early teen girls living with me on and off for years before I even had a child of my own and I called her to verify everything those girls claimed she gave permission for them to do. If it was something I was uncomfortable with I still wouldn't allow it even if their Mom said they could because she wasn't there to be responsible for it, I was.
Can we talk about how AMAZAING her mother did on that phone call to 911. You can tell she's distraught but is holding it together to give very clear, detailed information based on all the last known information she had. Most people panic and freak out and cant concentrate on those details and can take longer to get help. Her mother, despite her obvious distress, fought through those emotions to do everything she could to help Carlie. That is a sign of strength that I don't think most people could ever have. What an incredible mother.

I remember this case so clearly, especially the video. The way he just led her away as though it was a normal interaction is bone chilling. In the news coverage I heard “Never allow yourself to be taken to the second location” for the first time and I’ve never forgotten it. I’m not the only one, shortly after this a young girl was almost abducted but, because she heard the same thing, she fought and screamed so the would-be abductor got scared off. They found him with horrifying tools that were meant for her. I have no doubt that Carlie and her tragic story saved at least one girl’s life.

Carlie was my sisters best friend. I can't believe it's almost been 20 years😭 This was incredibly difficult to watch. Carlie's death destroyed their family and indelibly effected ours. Joseph P. Smith's death sentence being over-turned and reduced to life w/o possibility of parole, re-opened the old wounds. Joseph died recently in prison 👏 too humane for him, but glad none-the-less. The fact that he had daughter's of his own, is even more disturbing.

Some teenagers went there to do drugs and happened upon her body which was decapitated and her limbs were cut off. She still hasn't been identified and is still known as Jane Doe. Its a very old case.
Also reminds me of another South Korean case where construction workers found the body of a teenager in their construction site. I don't remember if her head was decapitated too but i do remember that the killer had sliced her hands off. She was identified by her name tag that students wear and her uniform and bag. They never caught her killer or recovered her hands. Its so scary to think about it.

Thank you for covering this story! Carlie lived only a few houses away from me. I was 10 at the time. People still leave flowers outside of her house, even after her family moved. McIntosh Middle made a memorial for carlie the day they announced her death and its still there today. I would pass it everyday at school. My best friend was good friends with carlie. Eventhough I didn't know her personally, this hit too close to home for me. my parents still live in the same house to date and driving by her house is heartbreaking still today. This story shocked the city of Sarasota, and has served to advise young kids in the area, including mine, her memory lives on. Her family fought hard for the death penalty but in the end carlies heartbroken mom died 4 years before that monster. It was also suspected that Joseph might've already claimed a victim in bradenton (tara Reilly-case remains unsolved) only 4 years before killing carlie. Heartbreaking :'(
I went to school with Tara from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade💔it really broke my heart when she got killed and I know it was him💯

I remember when this happened. My parents showed me the footage and used it to teach me about stranger danger. They told me if somebody ever tried this with me to scream and cry as loud as I could. It scared the shit out of me.

I took a self defense years ago from a police department. We practiced scenarios. One thing that they taught us was how predators can paralyze and weaken victims with intense verbal commands and threats. Surprisingly, even though we were practicing scenarios, it was actually scary and it did catch you off guard. But the more we were exposed to it, it help to lessen the fear. They found in past cases victims were terrified and paralyzed by a predator using using foul language, threats and aggressive intimidation etc. Watching the footage it looks like Smith did that. She was just blindsided by it. I hate that people like Smith can breathe air on earth. I know he's gone now but he got what 16-17 years to live longer than Carlie. We need stronger laws for sex crimes perpetrators committing against men, women and especially children!!!

Her mother died in 2017. A mothers grief is unimaginable. My mom died of alcoholism because my brother killed himself. My dad was murdered a few years after she died. I have been through the most horrible grief for many years but never will I understand the pain of a mother who has to bury their child.

This horror happens all to often. Six years ago I was smoking a cigarette leaning against a tree with my daughter only six feet from me trying out her new skate shoes when a car slowed down behind her and passenger door opened as a guy made to grab her. I yelled run, which she did right back into the store as I put a rock in their rear windshield. Driver took off almost leaving his friend behind. No plates and never caught. It's one of those things that many think won't ever happen to them till it does. I drilled my kids on what never to do, even more so after that day.

@@Lola-AreaCode212 California, border of Millbrae and Burlingame. Not a bad area, or at least not back then it wasn't. Not even the first incident either. From my understanding, with all the train upgrading, a ramp was moved so cars that got off came from bad areas, and would rob nearby homes and take off. Add kidnapping attempts, they could grab and be on the freeway in moments. Can't be done now, as they closed off that road and you basically have to pass a smaller PD, to access those stores and blocks now.

What this faled to mention was Susan was the one woth a drug problem before and after Carlie who had no problem selling her daughters ashes for 50 bucks, selling all her daughters furniture shortly after her death, and leaving ashes behind at a drug house. The responsibilities she was referring to, was more or less acting as her little brothers mother. She did more cooking and cleaning and caring around that house than anyone, but she would have never left her little brother willingly. She was too pure of a soul to be on this earth.

-and if all else fails fight and scratch with all your might if being forced into a vehicle

This was a very close friend of our family. Growing up we were always at each others house…I was young but I still remember. My grandpa helped build Carlie’s Garden and every March her life is still celebrated. We miss her dearly, I looked up to her like a big sister…😔 Fly high baby girl, you are so loved. This happened in my town and it was huge news. I remember being glued to the updates and driving all over in my 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse trying to help find her. The morning after her body was found I saw they changed the sign outside her school to "We love you Carlie".. It really hit people hard and inspired them to teach their kids even more about stranger danger. Then social media came along and made it even easier for the depraved psychopathic assholes to get to our kids! Please monitor your kid's online usage and don't let them walk alone 💖

this is why i take my dog EVERYWHERE with me now, i have a giant bull mastiff who always protects me. A few years ago when i was 13 i was walking my dog and he was off the lead and i suppose the man didnt see him. He tried to grab me and pull me around the corner to where his car was parked with the boot open. My dog heard me scream and instantly ran over to protect me. He went for the man and scared him off. he saved my life, i love him with all my heart ❤️❤️

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO BE RUDE I cannot stress this enough, so many of us teach our kids that good children are polite and respectful to adults no matter what while still trying to teach them stranger danger and it will straight up get them killed! Teach your children that if they're not 100% certain that the adult is safe, they can and should "be rude" - refuse to go with them, don't do as they say, run away, and, if they're grabbed, kick, scream, shout, tell them to fuck off, bite, whatever it takes. Teach your children you will NEVER be angry with them if they're just trying to stay safe, and that no half-decent adult will have a problem with talking to their parents or letting them talk to their parents, and no safe adult will ever try and get them to keep a secret from their family. Criminals often target children who can't talk to their parents for exactly that reason - it's easy to isolate them, gain their trust, and lure them away with promises of something better. I somewhat agree but I believe it depends on the age and character of the child. It's not that black and white (rude and polite).
I was a very polite child, quiet, obedient...an introvert. But I was also very serious and not that trusting. In danger, I would probably understand the situation I was in, but would be too afraid to make a noise and would go along.... While my son is completely different from the way I was as a child and I am worried he would be even easier to kidnap. He is a loud, hyper, cheerful, trusting, extroverted kid. While I struggled to communicate with extended family and peers, my son has no problem reaching out to strangers on the street and starting a conversation. He is outspoken and sometimes rude, but only to people he's comfortable with (aka me), so I have to teach him to be respectful and polite, while also explaining not everyone is a good person. He's still little and we go everywhere together so there's still time to prepare for when he's older and able to walk outside alone. But yeah....a lot depends on the child alone.
This is why I don’t trust ANYONE with my kid. Her friends mom was responsible for her since she was under her care at the time and didn’t take care of her. This could have been prevented.
I live in Cleveland, where Ariel Castro lived. He kidnapped 3 girls and kept them for over 10 years. Amanda Berry was one of his victims. I remember the DeJesus family stopping cars with her picture asking everyone and anyone if they’ve seen Gina. They stopped me at an intersection near the Castro house (of horrors). Those poor girls, Amanda, Michelle, and Gina endured abuse for over a decade before they were discovered. These types of people are PURE EVIL.

The death penalty should be reserved for child predators, rapists and serial killers. And should be available everywhere. Those people shouldn’t be allowed to either walk free or waste our tax payer dollars while they’re alive behind bars.

My daughter would've been 10 yrs old this Sept. Instead, her mother decided that texting was more important than actually paying attention to the road while she was driving and she had a really bad wreck that caused the death of my only child.

We would drive past that same neighborhood, that same car wash, everyday to get me to school and at the time I didn't understand why I wasn't allowed to take the bus anymore or visit friends anymore...

This happened in my home town. Her body was dumped behind a church literally 1000 feet down the road from my house at the time. Her memorial is still there to this day. Such a heartbreaking case
Poor girl! I had never heard of this case till now, it's so scary the way he just walked off with her in broad daylight! In the early to mid 90s when I was between 9 through 11 years old, my family moved to a very quiet street where all the houses were higher and further up from the street, as they were built on a hill. The school bus would drop me pretty far from my house and I was the only kid who lived on the long winding street, the other kids lived right near the bus stop. I enjoyed the long walk home, it was so peaceful that I often was in no rush, but I knew my mom whom was at work would be worrying and calling the house to check if I was home yet. I remember i used to walk holding my house key jutting out between my fingers so that if someone stopped and tried to grab me, I could jab them in the eye with it,lol. I'd tense up everytime a car passed me a little too slowly. But the street wasn't where something happened. Our apartment was a rented basement apartment in the back of a large home, to get in I'd have to walk up a long steep driveway, go through a breezeway to the back of the house where our door was. It was creepy because the family upstairs was never home and the backyard was just miles of woods. One day as I passed through the breezeway I heard noises coming from the garage, I turned to see an unfamiliar man peeking at me through the glass window of the door leading to the garage, he opened it and said "Hey Come in here " in a slurred voice, I forgot all about my "key weapon", panicked and ran towards my apartment door wondering if I'd have time to unlock it and get in before he reached me? Should I run to the woods instead? I had seconds to decide as I could hear him stumbling behind me. It must have been my lucky day because I reached my door and it was already unlocked, turns out one of my older brothers had come home sick early from school and had never locked the door behind him, I slammed the door in the mans face and he started banging on it, I yelled for my brother to call the police. The banging stopped after a few minutes and we waited in fear till the police showed up. They found the man an hour later hiding and intoxicated in a tool shed. He had a knife on him and had been driving drunk, left his car somewhere in the neighborhood and the police believed he had just randomly picked our garage to hide in. Later i was told he had a record and had kidnapped and assaulted his niece a few years prior. My mom moved us out of there not long after. It was one of the scariest moments of my life at that point and as anyone can tell by the length and detail of this comment, it's something I still vividly remember despite the 30 years since it happened. I often think of how different the outcome might have been had my brother not been home and that door would have been locked.

@@bathroomsinging8728 Not everyone reacts the same way. I’d rather arm my kids with the knowledge of monsters than send them out against them unawares. We always discuss the cases as well and how it could be handled. I don’t want them to be naive because the threat is very real. We’ve been followed on multiple occasions with ME with them, and they’ve told me of instances when they were alone. The world is a scary place sometimes. And while kids don’t need to see and know everything, I do think knowledge of some things is crucial for them to function safely in this environment. We don’t not talk to children about fires because of fear they’ll be scared. They’re shown the risks and dangers, then given advice on what to do if they are faced with it.
When do we as a society start putting overwhelming pressure on the justice system for releasing these scumbags back into society? Sick and tired of hearing about cases like this it is beyond infuriating.

The judges should be required to take the criminal into their home for years if they're going to do a light sentence, and if the criminal reoffends, the judge should be arrested and sentenced too. I'm tired of them enabling predators to escalate to m/urder.
He had only committed stupid minor drug and fraud crimes until he did this unforgiveable act. He should have just been taken out and shot behind courthouse. But he was just one of the 10's of millions people on drug or other non violent probation in USA when he did it. The justice system is broke because we have things like mandatory sentencing of 10 and 20 years for a drug crime but a rapist can get out in 5. That was not the case here.. No red flags in the system about him being violent.

As for the video giving advice on how to keep kids safe, my parents gave my brother and I a "password" when we were young. My dad instructed us that even if it was his best friend, (who we knew well and considered an uncle) if he didn't have the password, we weren't to go with him. I have now taught my kids the same and the password is the same that it was for us when we were young.
My husband and I have a special knock for when we're at hotels or one of us pops out without a key. Always better to be safe than sorry!
And also, the safe word thing is a good trick in the event a stranger approaches a child but i would go as far as to say to NEVER accept a stranger saying they were sent by your parents. If you have decent parents, they would have told you ahead of hand and likely would not choose a total stranger but somebody the child is familiar with. Also if ever in doubt, kids have phones these days, so if the person truly is a good person, they will have no issue with you taking a couple minutes to call your parents to confirm.

I'll never forget this one. My girls would compete in a music festival at a church in Sarasota every year in late winter. When they announced her body had been found at a church and named the road it was on I recognized it right away and my heart sank because I knew we would have to drive by it on the way to the festival. Just a couple of weeks after Carlie's body was found I was driving my girls down that same road. As we passed the church I saw a ton of balloons, flowers, stuffed animals and a sign that read "We love and miss you Carlie." It was horrible. And to watch the killer in this interview wanting to smoke and talk to his family makes my blood boil. Carlie's mother died from a heroine overdose in 2017. Just heartbreaking.

Someone tried to abduct me from school when I was 5 yrs old. They called the office and had my full name and information and were trying to get permission to come get me from school. Luckily, the secretary in the office knew me personally and had a bad feeling so she didn't let it happen. Thank God for that woman. Mrs Bailey was her name.
It still makes my heart race when I think about it and that was 35 years ago. I don't remember the actual event, only what my mom told me when I got older.

This is why I’m absolutely against young kids walking anywhere alone, there are so many predators looking for young vulnerable kids. I myself have experienced a scary situation while picking my kids up from school, it’s a block away and a man in a van was following me and asking me if I wanted a ride while walking with my kids (I was able to dodge him & thankfully nothing happened) however, can you imagine a kid walking alone?!
The video conveniently left out that she had been communicating online with what she thought was a teen boy. She wanted to walk home so she could meet up with the “boy.” It turned out to be a man. She didn’t deserve what happened, but the full story is not being told. Carly was deceived, groomed and manipulated online to meet up with this man.

My mom used to cry & beg me not to walk alone from school, but I couldn't understand why. This was back in the 70's & when I hit 13 years old...I understood why it drove my mother crazy. When the guy that kidnapped her returned the station wagon he was borrowing from a friend it had scuff marks all over the roof the whole entire car was trashed you could tell a brutal attack happened inside of it. I was like 16 in this happened and I think about her everyday when I drive past her house or Evie's car wash. Rest in peace You beautiful angel 💕🥺

Know what you're gonna ahead of time. Empower yourself with a worst case scenario plan in your head for them.

If you know it's gonna happen, you decide where and when. Take as much of their plan for you away from them as you can. Do everything you can to either get away or make them do it now. No crime scene number two. If they're gonna take your life away, take away their timeline. Fight mean, leave scars!
Never ever let a child walk home alone ever, not in this day and age! If she runs off, call her parents immediately and if possible, get in your car, and try to catch her. I have family members that age, and they are in no way ready to take responsibility for themselves! Just like this very scary case, in can happen in the blink of an eye!
@@RepentfollowJesus you're right about the dogs. Once a bond is made between a child and a puppy, when that puppy grows to adulthood, the dog will protect that child from harm with a vicious fervor. I've seen it firsthand many times. Even the smallest of breeds can be quite effective too.

Like in USA, when they know this is happening, they have mechanisms how to act quite quickly and surround the area etc., while in Europe, police would probably wait until it's too late. And the same with general public - if I read discussions about lost children, it's often much more about "how did they dare to leave, I would spank them once they are home" than real concern about their well-being. Which is sick.

I bought my daughter a cell phone at 6 when she started school! Myself or fam waited for her at the bus stop up until 8th grade! She hated it but I didnt care! After 8th grade she was in sports and was at school til picked up then she got a car at 16! These stories break my heart and even though my daughter is a freshman at OSU today I still check her location faithfully! Nothing is guaranteed but Im not making shit easy either! I personally also blame her friend's mother. The girl was eleven years old and she let her walk home for a walk that would take an hour and a half, wtf! When children are playing at your house you are responsible for them period! I don't care if she said she was allowed to walk or not, her safety would be my responsibility. I hope that mother thinks about the choice she made for everyday for the rest of her life and feels guilty. If it were my child I could never forgive her! 😡

I watched a few minutes with my 5 year old daughter. Sharing the tips was such a nice addition to this video! I made sure she paid complete attention and understood what to do in a situation like this. This is a mother's worst nightmare. 💔
How is he confessing to murdering her and where he buried her to multiple family members over the phone while in jail, yet LE needed THEM to come forward and reveal what he confessed? Why aren’t they actively listening in to his conversations

I remember when this happened. The footage was all over the news and it was one of the first times that surveillance cameras had caught something like this so clearly. It freaked a lot of people out to see something like this happen in real time, and especially to a child.
I had a friend who was a child psychologist, I remember her watching it and yelling at the TV "Put your phone down! Oh god, look up! RUN!!" Carlie was distracted by her cell phone as she walked behind the carwash and didn't realize the guy was walking towards her till it was too late.
That's what I thought too. I'm in Tampa and was in high school when this happened. It was kinda the beginning first her then Jessica . I had never heard of abductions like these happening and then they were just popping up.

@@j4kgang921 Because it was a shortcut. The car wash was part of a business complex, and it was quicker to cut through the complex instead of keeping to the main road.
@@j4kgang921 theres a neighborhood behind that evies, she was was likely leaving a house from that neighborhood and trying to cross to the sidewalk in front of the business.
