@@omgxwtfxily that's possible if the witness testimony was a false lead. However, it seems pretty genuine to me since he actually talked to her, thus having a good amount of time to view her face. So if she did meet a sad fate, it definitely wasn't right away. I still think human trafficking is a possibility, but only one of many. Most likely she wanted a new life and got one for at least awhile. Where she is now is anybody's guess.

fanime1 human trafficking of a young high school girl in a 1st world country is rare no human trafficker would take the risk of abducting a girl and risking every law enforcement agency in that country coming for her it’s not practical human trafficking is a big business in impoverished countries and sometimes in low income areas in 1st world countries but that’s also quite rare. Most likely she was abducted by a creep and probably murdered sadly that is really the only possibility in a particular case like this. Keeping her alive would be a big risk

I had a friend who lived in Yorkton at the time and he remembered seeing a girl who looked like Mekayla and was behaving suspiciously.

I’m a victim of grooming so I’m pretty sure this is what happened to her. The reason that none of her calls were able to be traced is because she likely called the person through Snapchat or something like that. Groomers love to use those apps because the messages disappear after a certain time frame and nothing is traceable. Kik is also commonly used because it’s mostly anonymous. I’m pretty sure whoever was on the phone with her convinced her to come live with him or visit (yes, groomers often do this) because she was naive, shy, had low self esteem, and was likely depressed. The groomer used this to his advantage and manipulated her. There’s also a high chance that foul play was involved. Such a sad case.

My theory: She was talking to a guy and got groomed for human trafficking or she might be in someone’s basement at the moment.
The trafficker convinced her he was a good guy and that they would just go on vacation for “a while” to the city - hence she talked about going to the bigger cities -.
Last minute (on the day of her disappearance) the guy comes up with an excuse that he is late and that she might even have to take the bus, he advises her to get money at the bank for a bus ticket and some food, knowing she probably wouldn’t ask a friend since he/she would be in school by then.
This is where the ‘observing stage’ begins. The guy (or a team) observe Mekayla to make sure she is alone and not followed by anyone. Then another easy excuse that she has to wait at Horton’s and he’ll be there soon. That’s why she still looks at the door in case he comes in. (Notice how she leaves through the backdoor again, I’m almost sure she was instructed to do so, just like at school.) He then keeps her waiting while he (or his team) observe her and look at her behavior. Once satisfied that she is alone and obeyed his earlier instructions, the middle stage begins. The guy (or team) get into position to double check that she is alone by taking control of her actions and telling her what to do: 1) go to school and make sure some friends know she’s going on vacation (Mekayla still thinks she is at this stage), 2) with another excuse like: oh there’s traffic it’ll take a while before I get there, he tells her to go to the bus station to check when the next bus will leave for her destination, which he already knows is 5pm. 3) third instruction: go eat something.
His observer(s) have visually confirmed that she is alone. His instructions add security because no cop or federal agent would just let the bait walk around to the criminal’s instructions, that’s far too dangerous.
Knowing his grooming worked, he sends her a final instruction to go somewhere (with no cameras).
    He picks her up…

I went to that school, and every year on the day she disappeared the school does a special prayer for her safe return. Her missing poster hangs on the school board. Our town along with her family holds vigils for her. She has a massive reward for information or her return. I heard rumours from a friend that she ran away on a bus but it is said she never bought a ticket. Definitely an interesting and depressing case. To this day it chills me. She was somewhat unhappy in her personal life and this "person" gave her some purpose, so, as a young, naive child she didn't see that there maybe something sinister going on, as there are traffickers and groomers who are experts at their field. I can see this as I see myself in her at 16, I displayed the same body language and behaviour, and i was talking to someone much older. He also made me move to different places in order to avoid detection, and i didnt think much of it....Unfortunately, I don't think it ended well for her, she was either sold into trafficking or is no longer alive, she was disposed off after she vanished.

Is it possible that she was pretending to be on the phone but wasn’t really talking to anyone and that’s why the calls were not recorded? I cannot tell you how many times I’ve pretended to be on the phone when I’m trying to avoid people in public, especially those pushy salespeople at the mall that are always trying to give you samples of makeup or offer to straighten your hair. Ladies, you know the people I’m talking about. Maybe she wasn’t really on the phone at all and was simply trying to look less conspicuous. I don’t know, just a theory.

I thought so as well. I often pretend to be on the phone when i'm on my own at restaurants & cafes just to look less awkward around people who sit in groups. It may seem weird to a lot of people that someone would do that, but it's a thing. Especially among socially awkward/ anxious people. Another theory of mine is that she could pretend to be on the phone because she felt like she was in danger. The way she keeps looking over her shoulder & seems to be so hyperaware of her surroundings is just super strange. Maybe she wasn't waiting for someone to meet her, maybe she was checking if whoever was following her gave up on waiting for her to leave that restaurant?

My Opinion: Mekayla was pregnant. This would explain her desperate, frantic and secretive behaviour and her desire to want to up and leave. She wasn’t able to/didn’t want to tell her family and decided running away would be an easier option. I theorise the other person involved didn’t want the hotel booked in his name. 12:08 police should investigate the lady more. Sure, she could be an unsuspecting civilian or she could be the person who gives young women directions of what to do next.

I do agree with you that she was probably talking to this guy she met online (Maybe from league of legends?), and he was giving her directions of what to do. But I doubt the old lady was involved.
I personally think the guy made her walk around and follow his commands, maybe pretending that he was late or stuck in traffic or something. Telling her to "maybe check the bus station how much a ticket costs" etc. But in the meantime he (or a team) was observing her to make sure she was alone and wasn't with someone or working with police to catch the groomers.
Once they realized she was indeed alone, they lured her to a place without camera's and that's when they took her. She probably realized at this point that the man wasn't who he said he was, but it was too late. I really do hope she's somehow still alive and fine though.

The older woman she approached in the restaurant for help with renting a hotel room had to know that something was wrong, and did nothing. As adults we all have a responsibility to watch out for and assist young people at risk. Just a few questions, are you OK, do you have someplace to stay, do you need help? Then a call to the police that there may be a minor in trouble. Just ignoring her as she sat in that booth was just cruel. When i was in college I worked at a very popular diner at the junction of two interstate highways, that would have young people turn up alone, hitchhikers with backpacks, little money and who would sit in the booths for hours. The diner manager would always go sit down and talk to them, and call the local police if he thought they needed help or a ride home or to a shelter.

I feel like she met someone online, maybe even in league of legends. I've always said that online relationships are a dangerous thing, because you never truly know someone unless you've met them. And that's where the danger comes in. Sometimes the moment you realize someone isn't who they said they'd be, is already too late in these scenario's.
My theory is, she met someone online who made her walk around and do all these things (while calling through and app so it won't show in the call logs). He made sure she wasn't followed and just observed her from a distance, maybe even made her walk around to make sure she was tired and couldn't resist. Then when it was time he made her walk to a place without camera's, and that's when she realized she was in big trouble, but it was already too late.
The "I need help" to her friend 100% was a call for help because she might have have a suspicious after the guy kept making her wait and kept making her walk around. And the message after "nevermind, i figured it out" sealed her fate, because she probably told herself "Stop thinking so negative, it's fine".

That stuffed full backpack isn’t exactly for shopping or going to the park for the day... she has planned on going somewhere with someone.
It’s really eerie looking at that video footage with all of that in mind. Makes you shudder.
The only wildcard is the older woman being asked for help with a hotel room. That kind-of suggests that she’s running away alone, although it could also mean she thinks she was stood up and wants to grab a place to stay for the night because she can’t go back home.
That would also explain the message for help to her friend.

Maybe she wasn’t on a phone call, maybe she was listening to a voicemail or something else, which could explain why it didn’t register as a call on the cell tower. Same with the ‘call’ she was on outside the bank maybe.

it seemed to me like she was waiting to be picked up in the wendys but they never came. so she went to get the bus. so it seems like she voluntarily left, even if she was later kidnapped or whatever.
when she told her friend "help" maybe she would tell her that someone was going to pick her up but now she needs either a place to stay or a way to get there. she figured she'd stay in a hotel or go by bus.
maybe she wanted a room for the night so she'd have a place to stay without going back home (she had already said shed leave that day) and they'd pick her up the next day. she didnt get any help, apparently, so she went herself by bus.
maybe she wanted the old lady to do the transaction so she wouldnt appear in the recipe or whatever.
still just looks like she is leaving for a trip, leaving no trace. i could probably try the same thing and look weird in the footage.
the fact that no other clue came after is the problem: she doesnt seem that weird from the footage or maybe chats to not use social media ever again. so kidnapping is the most likely answer.
those people who claim have met a nice girl and had a nice chat dont seem that likely then, since its likely shed have a normal life and kept using the internet.

I believe she met someone online and she either planned to meet them, or run away with them. Of course she seemed anxious/nervous in the footage. She didn't want anyone to find out, like her family or friends. Explains why she was being so vague too. Seems like whoever she was going to see didn't show up on time (or at all for the day), so she figured she'd rent a room for the night first and continue waiting. If she was trying to rent a room online, she asked the old lady because she doesn't have a credit card and could have told the lady to book the room for her, and she'd pay the lady in cash. Lady refused her because it seemed sketchy, especially for a girl her age, to make such a request. I think Mekayla got impatient, or too nervous that she'd be seen by someone she knows, and left to go TO the person instead of waiting for them.
Now who is was supposed to meet could be anyone. Maybe a boy around her age she wanted to have a relationship with? Or a pedo who possibly groomed her, and eventually kidnapped her. She's young, insecure, and vulnerable. Grooming her would be so easy for some predators.
Or in the end, she ran away with someone at least temporarily, and decided to start a new life. No kidnapping. She just wanted to get out of town and never look back, for her own personal reasons.

A young girl stopped using her cellphone? That doesn't bode too well...

She followed someone’s directions on the phone for her escape. Everytime she looks on the phone, she either goes out or looks out. She knew there are cameras watching and she had to be careful as told by her by this person on her phone.

That’s also possible. But look at her again in some clips. She puts her phone to her ear, obviously calling someone. It’s therefore likely I think that she is messaging with the person on the phone. It could also be likely they were chatting about booking hotels too which supports her asking the old lady about hotels.

Another detail that hasn’t been clear is the backpack. Is it even hers? It wasn’t specified whether it belonged to her in this video

All the video says is that she usually carried a purse, and not a backpack.

darkenopsia could be a ”where are you, I'll pick you up.” *she goes outside tells them the streets goes back inside. ”ill meet you In The back” *goes out back to wait. Gets inpatient goes inside. Gets a call. ”i won't be able to make it today, get a hotel room” * etc

100% she was instructed to do every bit of activities here, especially during the cafe timeline. She's instructed to go through back exit, to sit there for a while, to go out and then go back in again, and to book a hotel room. Each activities signify whoever talks to her is actually nearby or locals who know the area.
She was instructed to move around a bit to check whether she's alone or not. She was looking around to actually check whether there's someone who knows her (probably the question is "do you know anyone in that cafe?"). She chats that "she need help" before booking a hotel room because she thought that she could stay for a while in her friends house (since she cant book a hotel room) before actually going out.
This is either a trafficking ring or a creepy groomer which is not a stranger to KiK.

Interesting theory, it really looked like someone gave her orders what to do.

You can't "groom" someone who's of the age of consent, which is 16 in Saskatchewan.
