What we learned from all of this, if a friend ever Ever EVER texts and says “I need help” and minutes later says “never mind I figured it out” ASK what was wrong, ask what she figured out, be nubby, be noisy, ASK.
The problem with that idea is: this was a school day. Her friend was in class when she texted so she probably didn't even see the messages until later.
And the fact she kept changing locations was probably someone making sure she wasn’t being tracked or to get the surveillance of her confused which was probably a clue that the person has done this before. Trafficking or serial killer.
I had a friend who lived in Yorkton at the time and he remembered seeing a girl who looked like Mekayla and was behaving suspiciously. Because he was in the police force, he decided to follow her to see if she had been using drugs. He saw her approach an airport and go inside, but he didn’t tell me anything that happened afterwards.
I'm curious why the school didn't call her mother when she didn't show up to any of her classes?? My school immediately calls parents when kids aren't in class
@@p_dusty5451 I mean I'm in America and it really depends on the school. But most schools where I'm from will call when I kid doesn't show up. They do attendance, If you're not there then bam call the parents and find out if you're home sick. Helps prevent situations like this happening, if they informed the parents they could've caught her before she disappeared forever. So it's unfortunate that they didn't call the parents
In small town sask, teachers don’t call if it’s one class or so. If you miss like 3 days of classes they will call,l but they won’t call for every single class.
@@miss_chrissy I definitely agree, I'm from rural Ohio and my school calls for absences. Maybe not every class, but beginning of the day attendance and maybe after they miss a few classes of the day. I sincerely hope that the school she attended, and hopefully schools all around, started calling parents after this case.
@@DrFeelGoood yeah I was really surprised they weren't called especially since the school looked big. So many of thesd situations could've been prevented if schools just did roll call and called parents
Back when I was in high school (US) they didn't call unless you skipped 2 or more classes more than once a week or unless you skipped a whole day. Public schools really only care about kids when it's convenient or effects budget.
That's how things are generally for an Average teen. Even I did not have any friends growing up. Kids these days have it ugly. They have to deal with social media too
It’s pretty obvious to me that she’s using the restaurant WiFi to make audio calls through an app. That would explain why the phone company has no records.
The way it sounds, when she figured she couldn't get a ticket or her contacts fell through, she may have attempted to hitchhike and that's where things went south.
Miss Wonnykins Honestly that makes a lot of sense. I’ve heard of a lot of stories like that but more so from the 20th century. I think if that happened, either she is dead, or maybe alive still? But 24 hours is the most crucial time for a missing person, when it’s already 48 hours the chances of them being dead is high.
Seems like someone would’ve seen her walking on the side of the road if she had. I’m guessing she met up with her “friend” and she was probably sex trafficked or something.
Does someone still allow hitchhiking from strangers these days? Isn't hitchhiking not legal anymore because of all those tragic kidnapping and rape cases during the 60's and 70's?
I asked a friend who lives in Canada, and she said this “Between Regina, Saskatoon, and North Battleford there are a lot of Disappearances, and cases of Human trafficking” so that’s definitely a possibility, just one I don’t wanna think about
I live in Regina and can confirm there's a very high disappearance rate. I believe North Central in Regina is or was at one point the highest murder rate area in Canada
There was just a recent case somewhat similar in Alberta with a 13yr old girl from Edmonton. She was missing for a week before they just found her yesterday (July 2,2022) across the boarder in Oregon. Fortunately she was found , however the man who took her was a 41 year from Oregon. It seems a lot of planning went into this case as well. I'm happy she is found. Not many of these cases end like that. 41 yr old Noah madrano is being charged with ORS.163.225 - KIDNAPPING II -NO BAIL ORS.163.427 - SEXUAL ABUSE I -NO BAIL ORS.163.365 - RAPE II -NO BAIL That case reminded me of this one and this one continues to break my heart. I hope the family gets answers.
Feel like she was groomed. The constant conversation with someone basically proves it, and they likely had Ill intentions to start with, I.E asking HER to book the hotel so it cannot be traced to them. They were giving her directions the whole time, which would also explain her erratic behavior.... part of me wonders if they told her that they were her dad.
I agree with this. She was clearly talking to someone and received instructions. This person was very careful to not show themself on any cctv, didn't want to book hotel to leave a trace, knew how to communicate without leaving any traces. It's very suspicious
@@D5801 Yeah. A clear sign that she was given instructions by someone is how she leaves through the first exit at Wendy's, then proceeds to leave through the other exit instead
Yes! This explains why she would sit at these restaurants for so many hours and do nothing. They probably said to meet up but due to cameras and people, they probably changed their mind and told her to leave again and eventually to book a hotel so they can meet up without them being traced. But when she didn’t know how to do that, they probably told her to go somewhere else
I think the reason why she was sporadically "leaving" Tim Hortons was that she was checking the parking lot for a car. I also think it's possible that she doesn't want to be found. She did have a history of self-harm, posting about loneliness, talked about traveling. She might've told her friends that her acne medication were hard drugs in an effort to impress them (she also hung out with smokers). It's possible that she was just a very lonely kid who felt dissatisfied with her life and wanted to start a new one. That's just speculation though, still doesn't explain who she kept trying to meet at Tim Hortons.
I instantly thought the same thing in regards to her checking the parking lot and the story she told her friends about the pills. Also the way she went clear back to school just to tell her friend about going on "vacation" and then leaving again. I believe she was trying to impress her friends. Kinda like a "watch what I'm gonna do" kinda thing. Either way with all stories like this you can only HOPE that people find their way back home safe again.
Maybe whoever she was looking for at Tim Hortons was going to help her get away, and they were going to go off together. Or maybe she was just trying to make sure nobody caught her skipping school or something? ((Like so they wouldn't try and drag her back if she was trying to leave))
My theory: She was talking to a guy and got groomed for human trafficking or she might be in someone’s basement at the moment. The trafficker convinced her he was a good guy and that they would just go on vacation for “a while” to the city - hence she talked about going to the bigger cities -. Last minute (on the day of her disappearance) the guy comes up with an excuse that he is late and that she might even have to take the bus, he advises her to get money at the bank for a bus ticket and some food, knowing she probably wouldn’t ask a friend since he/she would be in school by then. This is where the ‘observing stage’ begins. The guy (or a team) observe Mekayla to make sure she is alone and not followed by anyone. Then another easy excuse that she has to wait at Horton’s and he’ll be there soon. That’s why she still looks at the door in case he comes in. (Notice how she leaves through the backdoor again, I’m almost sure she was instructed to do so, just like at school.) He then keeps her waiting while he (or his team) observe her and look at her behavior. Once satisfied that she is alone and obeyed his earlier instructions, the middle stage begins. The guy (or team) get into position to double check that she is alone by taking control of her actions and telling her what to do: 1) go to school and make sure some friends know she’s going on vacation (Mekayla still thinks she is at this stage), 2) with another excuse like: oh there’s traffic it’ll take a while before I get there, he tells her to go to the bus station to check when the next bus will leave for her destination, which he already knows is 5pm. 3) third instruction: go eat something. His observer(s) have visually confirmed that she is alone. His instructions add security because no cop or federal agent would just let the bait walk around to the criminal’s instructions, that’s far too dangerous. Knowing his grooming worked, he sends her a final instruction to go somewhere (with no cameras). He picks her up…
I don’t think a teen girl would be able to just disappear completely on her own. She wasn’t even able to book a hotel room. With her history using Kik and actively engaging with strangers, like many people have said ,she most likely was groomed by an experienced groomer who knew how to avoid detection
My thoughts too. She was talking to a lot of random strangers online and through untraceable apps. She likely met up with one of these individuals and they murdered her.
I dunno about Canada, but in my country, you can't book a hotel room if you're underage. Besides, even if you could, the hotel would have your details and a copy of your passport, which would make dissapearing harder.
@@OneKnifeYeHand its the same with my country. At least here in the US, they ask for a credit card and ID to verify that you’re the person checking out the room and are 18+ That information can be requested by anyone in law enforcement if someone’s gone missing or if that person is a wanted suspect. Not easy to go missing using that route
Not just anonymous online, he must know how to avoid a lot of cctv in shop etc. Not even a trace of car or a bus she is taken. Very slick guy, very prepared at what he do.
I remember somebody telling me that their friend became extremely depressed from taking too much accutane. If she was overdosing on it like opioids, she was most likely not in the best mental state and it might have something to do with her self harm and desire to run away. Personally, I think that she felt really lonely, either at her house or with her social life, most likely the latter because she said that she didn't have any friends, despite obviously having some. She probably met somebody on Kik and ran away to go live with them. I really hope she is doing okay.
madz !! I took it, twice and I dunno how it is in America but they always ask if you’re depressed or anything because I guess it can worsen it if you already have it
im currently on accutane and i have depression and it definitely fucked w me the first month. kinda paranoid from this story i hope i dont go batshit lmao
I was on Accutane for about a year. Half of the year everything was totally normal. For a short time though they doubled my dose for some reason and I was super wacked-out, depressed and suicidal. I remember throwing a huge fit with my family once just because they wanted to take me shopping. What a nightmare.
Sadly, it’s pretty obvious from the footage that she’s trying to meet up with someone, but whoever it is keeps changing the plan and moving her around to make sure they can’t be traced or caught doing what they are about to do. That stuffed full backpack isn’t exactly for shopping or going to the park for the day... she has planned on going somewhere with someone. It’s really eerie looking at that video footage with all of that in mind. Makes you shudder. The only wildcard is the older woman being asked for help with a hotel room. That kind-of suggests that she’s running away alone, although it could also mean she thinks she was stood up and wants to grab a place to stay for the night because she can’t go back home. That would also explain the message for help to her friend. Either way, it’s pretty clear this naive girl was distressed and bumbling into a very bad situation. :(
i think some guy groomed her convinced her they’re going “”on vacation”” that’s why she had a bag packed, why she wanted a hotel room, and why she was obviously cagey about everything
Another person in the comments suggested who ever she was attempting to meet(going off your theory)might have asked her to rent a room under her name so it doesn’t trace back to him. When she was unsuccessful he likely continued the goose chase. All in an effort to conceal his identity and confuse law enforcement of her activity to make it hard to track her whereabouts.
It never really said what kind of help she was seeking from her friend and it seemed as though her friend never even responded 2 ask what was wrong...That really bothered me for some reason....
@@giondennis6808 You have to remember this all happened during work hours and school(her friend was in class and likely didn’t see the text)remember she visited some friends at lunch briefly to say she was leaving then left a few minutes later. @YuPei so you don't have an intellectual comment and just resort to insults? Lol. You sound like you spent thousands on some criminology course and are now salty that I have more knowledge than you for free.
I think I know what really happened, it's always the "Sweet person turned out to have a dark side" cliche. What happened is that maybe she wanted to go on vacation without her mother she's annoyed at her for "Babying" her so she decided to go on a trip with an unknown person who most likely either kidnapped or killed her.
What is mysterious to me is how no one ever thought about her hitchhiking. She only had $55. There is no way she was going out of town on a bus and expect to have any money to buy food much less a motel/hotel room for even 1 night. She hitchhiked and got into the wrong car. The trans-Canadian highway is no stranger to being hunting grounds of serial killers preying on women. There is even a stretch of Highway 16 that is called, The Highway of Tears because it had been the location of many missing and murdered women. And Highway 16 runs through Yorkton.
This is really unfortunate, my take is that she's either been kidnapped by her contact and she's dead or she wiped herself from society and she's out there but doesn't want to be found. The investigation just ending like that leads to many possibilities, but this is my opinion from hearing cases like this.
@Speez71rm It could be, if it was someone older, he/she could've planned her runaway from around that time, and with that very same person she was making several untraceable calls on the day of her disappearance.
TrollForce i feel like she probably got groomed by an older man who told her he’d elope with her and promised her money and gifts, or perhaps already bought her some that they didn’t find out about.

I was sitting in a room waiting and was astounded by the thousand thousands of pictures of missing people on the wall, mostly women and girls. Really tells a lot about the isolation and traumatic neglect of a massive amount of men and boys if there's such a large market for sex trafficking like that. Addressing the symptoms alone will never solve the problem, nor will criminalizing and vilifying male victims of sociosexual isolation.
Is it possible that she was pretending to be on the phone but wasn’t really talking to anyone and that’s why the calls were not recorded? I cannot tell you how many times I’ve pretended to be on the phone when I’m trying to avoid people in public, especially those pushy salespeople at the mall that are always trying to give you samples of makeup or offer to straighten your hair. Ladies, you know the people I’m talking about. Maybe she wasn’t really on the phone at all and was simply trying to look less conspicuous. I don’t know, just a theory.
I thought so as well. I often pretend to be on the phone when i'm on my own at restaurants & cafes just to look less awkward around people who sit in groups. It may seem weird to a lot of people that someone would do that, but it's a thing. Especially among socially awkward/ anxious people. Another theory of mine is that she could pretend to be on the phone because she felt like she was in danger. The way she keeps looking over her shoulder & seems to be so hyperaware of her surroundings is just super strange. Maybe she wasn't waiting for someone to meet her, maybe she was checking if whoever was following her gave up on waiting for her to leave that restaurant?
I think she was on the phone and had a conversation with someone that prompted her to text her friend that she needed help. She had some kind of conversation that led to her asking for help.
TCherice I used to do that all the time when I walked home in highschool. I always felt embarrassed walking home by myself so I would pretend to talk on the phone, I even had pretend conversations so that it wasn’t obvious I wasn’t talking to anyone. Definitely an anxiety/low self esteem thing. That’s a really good point.

The person who did this knew EXACTLY how to avoid detection. This is highly sophisticated. I assume that this experience shows that she was not the first victim. The person probably pretended to be young, so she had to use an adult's name for a room.

Eventually she wants to leave home and the supposed abducter tells her they'll help and they make their elaborate plan. She starts to doubt if she wants to leave or not.

that, or she was looking for someone who was meeting her. My guess is, unfortunately, she had been groomed on Kik & planned on meeting said person. They probably planned on meeting up at the restaurant.
Sounds like she got taken. The trafficker must've made her go all over town to make sure she's not being followed, then waited until she went to the one place without cameras before luring her into a car. Seems like part of a pretty sophisticated network that knew exactly how to not leave a trace online for the feds to track. Hope they don't let this case go cold. I doubt she could've gotten that far on her own with no money or car at that age without getting caught on camera or kidnapped by another random creep.
I was speculating exactly about this trafficking theory and the most I think about it, the most convincing it becomes. The planning about this is just horribly well made and the fact that the sick bastard(s) who did this probably already got away with it, adds to the sad factor
Human trafficking is not like that. They look for at risk girls. Girls with family and friends who will look for them are not typical targets. Why take someone that risky when there are at risk girls and boys that no one will look for? Look into actual trafficking investigations.

God, how horrible. I did the DUMBEST things when I was a teenager and met up with several strangers from online. I’m so so blessed to be alive and safe. This poor baby is probably long gone because some sicko took advantage of her vulnerability.
I think she was telling her friends because she believed whoever she was meeting was taking her on a vacation a real one and she wanted to have that teenage girl moment of look guys in doing something cool
I believe she met someone online and she either planned to meet them, or run away with them. Of course she seemed anxious/nervous in the footage. She didn't want anyone to find out, like her family or friends. Explains why she was being so vague too. Seems like whoever she was going to see didn't show up on time (or at all for the day), so she figured she'd rent a room for the night first and continue waiting. If she was trying to rent a room online, she asked the old lady because she doesn't have a credit card and could have told the lady to book the room for her, and she'd pay the lady in cash. Lady refused her because it seemed sketchy, especially for a girl her age, to make such a request. I think Mekayla got impatient, or too nervous that she'd be seen by someone she knows, and left to go TO the person instead of waiting for them. Now who is was supposed to meet could be anyone. Maybe a boy around her age she wanted to have a relationship with? Or a pedo who possibly groomed her, and eventually kidnapped her. She's young, insecure, and vulnerable. Grooming her would be so easy for some predators. Or in the end, she ran away with someone at least temporarily, and decided to start a new life. No kidnapping. She just wanted to get out of town and never look back, for her own personal reasons.
I think the adult who'd groomed her into meeting him deliberately didn't meet her at the restaurant because he didn't want any witnesses see him with her. He probably watched her from the parking lot to make sure she wasn't an undercover cop, then once he'd confirmed she was underage, contacted her and told her to book a hotel room, so it wouldn't be in his name.
the last one seems kind of plausible cause a while back my friend try to make us run away with her, I asked her why and she said it was because she was "bored" we were in our last year of middle school (which for me is 8th grade, so I was 13 and everyone else turned 14)

I would hope the authorities investigated her League of Legends friend list as well as her social media. Many moons ago I was on a greyhound going from Kamloops BC back to Calgary. The girl I sat next to was coming from Sam Francisco to Calgary to get married to a guy she met on world of Warcraft. I told her she is crazy to do something so risky like that. She said she normally agrees with me but she met him in real life when he visited her in San Fran. I still thought it was odd and just told her to be careful. Hopefully the two of them are happy together still. But you are definately right. Keep an eye on those in game friends. Maybe one may know more.
more like shes living in someone's basement and is too subservient to escape, even when their captor is not at the house. it happens more than you would think.
it seemed to me like she was waiting to be picked up in the wendys but they never came. so she went to get the bus. so it seems like she voluntarily left, even if she was later kidnapped or whatever. when she told her friend "help" maybe she would tell her that someone was going to pick her up but now she needs either a place to stay or a way to get there. she figured she'd stay in a hotel or go by bus. maybe she wanted a room for the night so she'd have a place to stay without going back home (she had already said shed leave that day) and they'd pick her up the next day. she didnt get any help, apparently, so she went herself by bus. maybe she wanted the old lady to do the transaction so she wouldnt appear in the recipe or whatever. still just looks like she is leaving for a trip, leaving no trace. i could probably try the same thing and look weird in the footage. the fact that no other clue came after is the problem: she doesnt seem that weird from the footage or maybe chats to not use social media ever again. so kidnapping is the most likely answer. those people who claim have met a nice girl and had a nice chat dont seem that likely then, since its likely shed have a normal life and kept using the internet.
sounds like someone she was talking to online promised to pick her up and take her way to whatever fantasy they sold her. She bought it, but even though they coached her in using a burner phone, they thought she was smart enough to meet in an area with no video, when they realized she almost screwed them there, they at first thought of just ghosting her but after a while ( in the mean time she was just going to go it alone. hence the asking about a hotel.) They called her back and told her where to meet them.
If she said she'd leave that day, why would her grandma expect to pick her up from school? And why would she "miss" violin practice? Most likely didn't tell anyone at home about it.

Sorry even before social media. Teens hanging out with college guys was always a thing. Going back to the fifties. There are countless tv shows and movies with that as a love story plot.

Xross Productions I kno back when I was in school it was easy to go an come as I pleased due to my school being so big (it was 4 buildings in total) but in live in USA - this case is in CANADA - this is gonna be a weird reference but I used to watch joana ceddia (a UA-camr) on youtube and she would leave school everyday to go home for lunch - so maybe coming and going in Canada is easier?? Just a thought not facts.
It seems her mother is pretty secretive about the father, why wouldn’t the mom tell her about her dad, if she or her mom doesn’t know who he is then she could’ve been looking for her dad, if the mom does know about the dad then why is she hiding it from mekayla. If it could be proven that they family does know who and where the dad is that could probably lead somewhere. If the father is completely unknown then all media needs to be searched to see who contacted her and if anyone claimed to be her “father” I’m willing to bet it’s something domestic that made her leave
Especially with statement that "there is no evidence he is her dad", and not "No, that guy is not her father". Kind of a vague, yet telling way of speaking. Seeming to imply... Yes, he likely is her Father, but for one reason or another, she has refused to acknowledge it as fact... I mean, they took DNA, and still he fervently posts about her as her Father... I imagine had the DNA test come back as false, he would have been made to stop, as it could be a form of continued harassment in a way...
This sounds spot on. Females that grow up without a father always have a lot of issues. It's a psychologically proven thing. Plus her mom being so secretive about her dad is weird. I honestly wouldn't rule out some creep contacting her and pretending to be her dad. Then she leaves to go live with him and it took a turn for the worst.
epic “females”? You mean girls/women. And yeah it’s true. It’s also a proven fact when it comes to young boys who grow up without a mother. They also develop psychological issues.

I believe with my whole heart KIK should be taken down. The platform has done more bad than good and everyone knows that. Once you mentioned KIK my heart dropped. I knew automatically anyone involved in her disappearance wouldnt be identified.
On kik I spent every single day over a year talking and video chatting to my dream girl in both looks and personality who lived kinda close by. In the end it turned out that freak lied about half her life to me, cut me out of her life out of nowhere, and was a legit sociopath and schizophrenic on top of that.
@@tonyg5132 hmmmm something is off here. You shouldn't have had to be 'kicked out of her life out of nowhere' once you realized half of everything she said was a lie... Seems you fell into some pay-for and couldn't understand she just wanted a transaction
@@jerrykingsley6703 No I found out much later on that everything was a lie about her life. Its a really long story but it had nothing to do with money when we talked trust me. This girl just had something really wrong with her that she must really keep close to herself.
I will say now to add on to my original comment: A big part of me reacting that way may be from seeing an ordinary community from back then, this footage happened at the one time I wasn't depressed and despised the world so much, especially compared to now. However at the sametime seeing in that normal setting a seemingly innocent and nice person be suddenly put into this horrifying situation of who knows what and looking around with a paranoid vibe and seeming desperate rather than being at school and with her friends just makes me so glum. The atmosphere Jorge creates while showing the unsolved case adds to it.
She followed someone’s directions on the phone for her escape. Everytime she looks on the phone, she either goes out or looks out. She knew there are cameras watching and she had to be careful as told by her by this person on her phone.
That’s also possible. But look at her again in some clips. She puts her phone to her ear, obviously calling someone. It’s therefore likely I think that she is messaging with the person on the phone. It could also be likely they were chatting about booking hotels too which supports her asking the old lady about hotels.
Guy in dark clothing at Wendy's is, as many have said, definitely a bit suspicious. Doesn't appear to know the people he talks to, looks at Mekayla, but above all else... Walks into a food establishment ALONE and seemingly NEVER orders. I can understand going in and not ordering if you're just hanging out with friends who are eating, but to go in alone, strike up a chat with strangers, ogle a teenage girl, and dip? Yeah, he knows something.

Accutane is well known to cause depression during the treatment, she was under this medication even though she used to self harm, seriously? what doctor prescribed this to her?
The fact that it takes months for investigators to get social media records for missing person cases, where every day could mean the difference between life and death, is just wild.
Worst case scenario: she was groomed by an older man, and he got her. Best case scenario: she was a depressed teenager who ran away and is living her best life somewhere in a big city. Unfortunately it's probably the first one, but I hope its the second.
I would like it to be the best-case scenario but why was she looking around like she was trying to find someone? If I was going to run away I wouldn't go to a restaurant and hang I would just go you know. I think she planned to run away with someone else online...think about it. She's just 16 and needs someone else to run away with.
Unfortunately this is what human trafficking looks like. It’s a huge problem. The signs are all there. The only “sightings” anyone is going to see of her is if they are engaging in the aforementioned activity. She’s either dead or leading a terrible life being forced to do terrible things. This is why parents need to monitor their child’s internet activities.
Monitoring is definitely essential in being an active parent. Most children(especially teens)go through the phase where they’re invincible and know everything. Reading through every single message? No. But making sure no one is telling them their parent doesn’t love them and they can take care of them? Yes. That’s the problem with social media is how easy access it’s given to predators to manipulate and isolate children that are already vulnerable and likely lack attention at home.
no offense but human trafficking is wildly exaggerated by the right wing media, and it occurs mainly in developing countries for transportation to developed countries, not the other way around, so it's not really what human trafficking looks like lol
Even if she left to “start a new life” it’s still very unsafe for a young girl to try and do. Which sadly means to me she could have still met with foul play.

What could they have done? You can't hold someone down, that's illegal. You can't talk someone out of it if they're determined to go through with it. All you can do is smile and inform the police, but they wont do anything until she's actually missing. I believe it's called "Report missing after 36-72 hours".
Right? I'm baffled as to why no employees paid attention to her. I would have gone up to her and asked if everything was ok after she kept going in and out.
Isaac Rodriguez It's very unlikely high school students take it serious when their classmate says their going to vacation to a city out of the blue. I don't blame them.
It was teachers that didn’t take her seriously too. Besides that, teachers need to work on being someone students can confide in. So many people have a tough high school experience at it’s crucial adults stay actively involved especially because kids are most impressionable at this age. Just really think about how listened to one adult to make her go missing when that one adult could have been a mentor at the school instead. All i’m saying.
In middle school we had two teachers who were being inappropriate with young girls in the class. There was one specific teacher we reported several times (literally all the girls in class reported this man) The school did nothing. I’m older than this girl, but it’s only been a recent thing where people could even openly discuss this type of behavior from adults. Even up into the early 2000s it really wasn’t something you discussed and if you did, most of the times it was just brushed off. At least it was with any experience I’ve ever had or with anyone I knew at the time. It is truely horrifying how many people are willing to look the other way in general. Doesn’t matter if I t’s self harm, domestic abuse, grooming, ect. Indifference, fear, apathy, or even acceptance from others as just the “norm”. If no ones discussing these things, but it’s happening to tons of people (and it always was), people just think “this must just be normal” As an adult I know now none of the grooming or abuse is normal and that there are people who care, but as a child/young girl/young woman, abuse is suffocating.
I feel like she met someone online, maybe even in league of legends. I've always said that online relationships are a dangerous thing, because you never truly know someone unless you've met them. And that's where the danger comes in. Sometimes the moment you realize someone isn't who they said they'd be, is already too late in these scenario's. My theory is, she met someone online who made her walk around and do all these things (while calling through and app so it won't show in the call logs). He made sure she wasn't followed and just observed her from a distance, maybe even made her walk around to make sure she was tired and couldn't resist. Then when it was time he made her walk to a place without camera's, and that's when she realized she was in big trouble, but it was already too late. The "I need help" to her friend 100% was a call for help because she might have have a suspicious after the guy kept making her wait and kept making her walk around. And the message after "nevermind, i figured it out" sealed her fate, because she probably told herself "Stop thinking so negative, it's fine".
100 percent agree. I think he was watching her from a nearby location. I don't think he went anywhere near her at the restaurant. He may have even catfished her, or was wearing clothing that hid his identity so she wouldn't recognize him. Her texting her friend was probably like, her doubting the situation and trying to get her friends POV.
It's possible he's familiar with the area. Her trying to get cash could have been some attempt to get funds to meet up with him.Maybe he was somewhere enjoying watching her pacing.
The trusting approach of the old lady at Tim Hortons is what gives away what happened. She approached somebody. Probably asked for a ride. She got the ride.
It sounds like she was trying to run away but you know how it goes eventually you come back to your parents but as you said she definitely "got the ride"
I am so grateful my parents hammered into my brain just how dangerous talking to randos and promising to meet up irl really is. They didn't hold anything back, they showed me all the stories of these kinds of cases and it scared me a bit, but it was for good reason. A teenager is still a kid for a reason, they THINK they know better, but they really don't, AT ALL. I feel very bad for the family of this poor girl, and of course her as well. I just hope a conclusion is reached someday just to give peace.
Yeah her not saying to anyone where she was going is a huge red flag that she had bad parenting specially that she's a girl who's more vulnerable to these kinds of attacks.
Sounds like you have great parents and I so agree about your parents talking to you religiously about abductions, human trafficking and so on. Kids need to know about this kind of stuff. Parent's have to be "real" with theirs kids.
Yeah but these kinds of things can happen to adults as well so if you did wanna meet isn’t it better to idk meet in a place where you know there are cameras and how should I say this know who you are meeting first instead of not knowing how they look like
I do hope that she is found soon. This case in particular has stuck with me in my memory. Maybe because she is so close to my age. I also have the same desire that I have whenever I hear about unsolved crime cases. That desire is so see it solved and to know what has happened to the victims and why things happened the way that they did. It has been six years, and it is unlikely that anything will be learned at this point. Nonetheless, that doesn't mean that this won't be solved. Forensic technology is improving every year. We also might come across something that was overlooked. Mekayla might also decide to return to Yorktown. I want to remain optimistic. If we give up now, we will never find her.
This story is so heartbreaking on every level . She doesn’t have a father in her life, she didn’t feel she had any friends. She was a cutter. That is all to much for anyone to endure, especially someone so young.I am worried this poor girl was tricked and God only knows. That is a life full of suffering. I pray she is ok somewhere and will have a second chance with a better set of circumstances. I pray no one has hurt this Girl. 💔💔💔💔
I have my suspicion that the mother had an indirect role in her disappearance. However, it could lead to two posibilities. Either she successfully ran away and just now changed her identity and appearance, or her hitchhiking attempt led to a kidnapping, and possibly sent to trafficking.
The cops are worthless in that Podunk town and federal authorities won't be pressured by incompetent cops who basically are codependent with certain criminals. You see if there are certain crimes unsolved you will never look at the police's lack of ethics, effort and know how.
I’m a victim of grooming so I’m pretty sure this is what happened to her. The reason that none of her calls were able to be traced is because she likely called the person through Snapchat or something like that. Groomers love to use those apps because the messages disappear after a certain time frame and nothing is traceable. Kik is also commonly used because it’s mostly anonymous. I’m pretty sure whoever was on the phone with her convinced her to come live with him or visit (yes, groomers often do this) because she was naive, shy, had low self esteem, and was likely depressed. The groomer used this to his advantage and manipulated her. There’s also a high chance that foul play was involved. Such a sad case.
I don't think she just "wanted to get away." She was a child with very little to no means of realistically supporting herself in a new place. Not to mention she had family, and no mentions of a bad home life. She maybe wanted to run away, but in all likelihood would've turned up home soon again afterwards like most teen runaways do Either she was fooled by an online predator and subsequently kidnapped, or she DID want to leave home but was kidnapped before she could safely return. Either way, unfortunately, I don't think the chances of her still being alive are very high....
No mention of bad home life? Really? I find that doubtful somehow, because how come that she was apparently depressed, did self-harm, and posted in her social media that she feels alone and wanted to have a friend? That's def more than a tell tale sign that she's having some sensitive issues at home. She was raised by her mom, a single parent right? Was there a mention of her father? Is he still alive, dead or something? It actually crossed my mind that what if she was trying to find his dad but for some reason her mom won't allow her to? Maybe someone have found her contacts or something and decided to introduce themselves as her dad, I mean that could be possible right? Edit: okay I might have quickly headed to the comments lmao. Her missing father was indeed mentioned but idk, so many possibilities with this case, what if those suspected people were lying y'know ?
@Godot Someone who had a bad home life would also be much more vulnerable and likely to trust someone online, especially if that person promised a better life if she went to be with them. I hope that's not what happened, but it's a possibility that can't be ignored.

But when she didn’t know how to do that, they probably told her to go somewhere else
Bethany Birch where is she Bethany?
Wrong!! She didn't talk to anyone long enough for that. She got catfished and blackmailed. Then she self deleted.
Imagine she just wanted to escape her life... and she successfully did it and she’s looking at this video like..... got em good
Probably got trafficked in reality.
I really hope this is the truth.
Dude i hope that's right. I wish no1 did smt to her.
Sadly unlikely
I hope that’s true
@@ajaylewis322 I hope you're not making up the first part of your comment
Maybe whoever she was looking for at Tim Hortons was going to help her get away, and they were going to go off together. Or maybe she was just trying to make sure nobody caught her skipping school or something? ((Like so they wouldn't try and drag her back if she was trying to leave))
Ajay Lewis damn that’s awesome. I love when people are sincerely honest on the internet. Too many falsehoods being told has me jaded.
Scott's Shots she also lied about having 5000$ probably to impress her friends. I think that she was/is just a very lonely kid who wanted a way out
My theory: She was talking to a guy and got groomed for human trafficking or she might be in someone’s basement at the moment.
He picks her up…
Wow sounds plausible, that would explain a lot why her behavior seems to not make any sense. At that point she trusts him.
Wow you seem to have hit the nail on the head. Very spooky. Poor girl.
yeah, sadly, this is likely it.
girls were kidnapped in way simpler methods, Mekayla is deep in the matrix
Interesting. After checking out ur acct I’m pretty sure u have her
I don’t think a teen girl would be able to just disappear completely on her own. She wasn’t even able to book a hotel room. With her history using Kik and actively engaging with strangers, like many people have said ,she most likely was groomed by an experienced groomer who knew how to avoid detection
Yeah I totally agree with you. She did not even know how to book a hotel room on her own. Hardly a mastermind at orchestrating a disappearance.
At least here in the US, they ask for a credit card and ID to verify that you’re the person checking out the room and are 18+

Possibly

I would like to know what her family or the police thought was in her backpack
It never really said what kind of help she was seeking from her friend and it seemed as though her friend never even responded 2 ask what was wrong...That really bothered me for some reason....

There is even a stretch of Highway 16 that is called, The Highway of Tears because it had been the location of many missing and murdered women. And Highway 16 runs through Yorkton.
And nobody investigates the serial killers? Really?
This is really unfortunate, my take is that she's either been kidnapped by her contact and she's dead or she wiped herself from society and she's out there but doesn't want to be found.
Agreed, this seems extremely plausible to me
I think the adult who'd groomed her into meeting him deliberately didn't meet her at the restaurant because he didn't want any witnesses see him with her. He probably watched her from the parking lot to make sure she wasn't an undercover cop, then once he'd confirmed she was underage, contacted her and told her to book a hotel room, so it wouldn't be in his name.

it seemed to me like she was waiting to be picked up in the wendys but they never came. so she went to get the bus. so it seems like she voluntarily left, even if she was later kidnapped or whatever.
when she told her friend "help" maybe she would tell her that someone was going to pick her up but now she needs either a place to stay or a way to get there. she figured she'd stay in a hotel or go by bus.
maybe she wanted a room for the night so she'd have a place to stay without going back home (she had already said shed leave that day) and they'd pick her up the next day. she didnt get any help, apparently, so she went herself by bus.
maybe she wanted the old lady to do the transaction so she wouldnt appear in the recipe or whatever.
still just looks like she is leaving for a trip, leaving no trace. i could probably try the same thing and look weird in the footage.
the fact that no other clue came after is the problem: she doesnt seem that weird from the footage or maybe chats to not use social media ever again. so kidnapping is the most likely answer.
those people who claim have met a nice girl and had a nice chat dont seem that likely then, since its likely shed have a normal life and kept using the internet.
sounds like someone she was talking to online promised to pick her up and take her way to whatever fantasy they sold her.
@@TheHset i meant that thats what she told her friends; while telling her family nothing. however, that also doesnt make much sense.
if she is leaving, why do it in the middle of the semester, apparently?
itd make more sense if she just didnt tell anyone. i thought of it like a lie about where she was going during break.
You have to be 18 in Saskatchewan to purchase a hotel room. She was most likely asking the lady to purchase one for her because she couldn’t herself.

Mekayla’s bank account hasn’t used since she disappeared on Tuesday 12th April 2016 and that’s what concerns me the most about the whole case. If Mekayla is still alive why hasn’t Mekayla accessed her bank account or at very least contacted the police herself to tell them that she is safe and just don’t want to come home? I really hope that Mekayla is still alive that she will contact police herself and tell them that she is safe but the police wouldn’t be able to tell her family her location if Mekayla doesn’t want that.
If you’re trafficked in a human trafficking ring, I’d assume they don’t let you have free access to a smart phone or money, that’s how they would have control over you.
@@RedxRiot I do hope and pray that Mekayla is still alive and that she does contact the police herself to tell them that she is safe.

Well duh, the point is figuring out which it is.

Good tip.
Especially with statement that "there is no evidence he is her dad", and not "No, that guy is not her father".

I think it's more of her having daddy issues and had a falling out with her mom and decided to run away alone or with some guy she met online

I havent watched the video yet but Jesus.
Yeah, especially after hearing about her self-harming and the Instagram bio that just said "goodbye"
Another detail that hasn’t been clear is the backpack. Is it even hers? It wasn’t specified whether it belonged to her in this video
All the video says is that she usually carried a purse, and not a backpack.

Worst case scenario: she was groomed by an older man, and he got her.
Best case scenario: she was a depressed teenager who ran away and is living her best life somewhere in a big city.
Unfortunately it's probably the first one, but I hope its the second.
I would like it to be the best-case scenario but why was she looking around like she was trying to find someone? a lot of people do the second one. harder to do at that age though you bc any do anything without an adults permission...
Unfortunately, your "worst" case scenario is lacking imagination.
More likely I think it was a suicide or something of the sorts.
Worst worst case scenario human trafficking
Unfortunately this is what human trafficking looks like. It’s a huge problem. The signs are all there. The only “sightings” anyone is going to see of her is if they are engaging in the aforementioned activity. She’s either dead or leading a terrible life being forced to do terrible things. This is why parents need to monitor their child’s internet activities.
No, not monitor, but teach them how to protect themselves.
@red cherry yeah, i agree with that.
Monitoring is definitely essential in being an active parent. Most children(especially teens)go through the phase where they’re invincible and know everything. Reading through every single message? No. But making sure no one is telling them their parent doesn’t love them and they can take care of them? Yes. That’s the problem with social media is how easy access it’s given to predators to manipulate and isolate children that are already vulnerable and likely lack attention at home.
no offense but human trafficking is wildly exaggerated by the right wing media, and it occurs mainly in developing countries for transportation to developed countries, not the other way around, so it's not really what human trafficking looks like lol
it looks like grooming or abduction, not trafficking
Even if she left to “start a new life” it’s still very unsafe for a young girl to try and do. Which sadly means to me she could have still met with foul play.

If no ones discussing these things, but it’s happening to tons of people (and it always was), people just think “this must just be normal”
As an adult I know now none of the grooming or abuse is normal and that there are people who care, but as a child/young girl/young woman, abuse is suffocating.

All we need to know is.. how was her relationship with her mum thats the big piece
I have my suspicion that the mother had an indirect role in her disappearance.
However, it could lead to two posibilities.
Either she successfully ran away and just now changed her identity and appearance, or her hitchhiking attempt led to a kidnapping, and possibly sent to trafficking.
@@Royalname31 I thought of this too. Specially if she went to west coast.
Yeah that was not talked about and is a missing piece that would have helped to know about
The cops are worthless in that Podunk town and federal authorities won't be pressured by incompetent cops who basically are codependent with certain criminals. You see if there are certain crimes unsolved you will never look at the police's lack of ethics, effort and know how.
@Lynsey h you think she is locked in someone's basement? Or she doesn't know better and is with a predator?
Everything on snapchat is recorded you dummy
Sure you were, buddy. Sure you were. Way to make this story that has nothing to do with you about yourself though.
☝🏾🤨 smh
Yes
Are people really stupid enough to meet up with a stranger online?
I’m sorry but as a Canadian your pronunciation of Regina and Saskatchewan made me crazy.
Horrific
I don't think she just "wanted to get away." She was a child with very little to no means of realistically supporting herself in a new place. Not to mention she had family, and no mentions of a bad home life.
She maybe wanted to run away, but in all likelihood would've turned up home soon again afterwards like most teen runaways do
Either she was fooled by an online predator and subsequently kidnapped, or she DID want to leave home but was kidnapped before she could safely return.
Either way, unfortunately, I don't think the chances of her still being alive are very high....
I'm pretty sure she ran away
Unfortunately the motive to her disappearance is inside whatever online conversations the police can’t get a hold of.
I don't normally say this but...
Good. She had a great life, friends, and seemed to be liked. She threw that all away
Today I found out my senior year of high school was over and I was kinda sad. But Blameitonjorge released a new video today and that legit made me happy. I've been watching his videos since before freshman year and even to this day, I put them on whenever I do all school work. He truly is my favorite UA-camr.
Logan Lewis I’m feelin it too bud, class of 2020 was going pretty smoothly imo and then this just had to happen :(
@@g3nre267 at least we're alive and well and I'm just setting my sights on the future. Then again, I'm gonna be a teacher, so I'm just gonna back to high school in 4 years anyways lol. I wish you luck in the future
Logan Lewis yeah my freshman year got ruin, but feel bad for Seniors
@@lulu_TheWitchBoy me and my friends are pretty shocked. But hopefully you don't have to go through something similar.
I'm a senior too and I couldn't be happier to be out of high school
She met a guy online and he wasn’t as nice as he presented himself to her.
That’s the most likely explanation.
probably
Yeaup
Hopefully she's still alive, just strung out or something.. Poor dumb kid
this is what i thought too
@Ramona Flowers i spent 15 yrs on heroin. I was lucky enough to stop and become a healthcare engineer. What's your contribution to society? What's your story that earns you the right to judge people like me? You better answer me.
most interesting pronunciation of Saskatchewan ive ever heard
Regina is also not pronounced correctly
Very few things were pronounced properly. If someone is going to do research on a case, they should look into these details as well. Sloppy work.
Make a video about Paul Dennis Reid he’s a lesser known serial killer with an interesting story involving mind control
WTF
Paradox Shmaradox same
indeed his story is very interesting i would like to see a video on it !!!

I didn't expect a story from my province. There's still missing fliers everywhere.
Saskatchewan is all types of weird lol
ScaryWaffles that’s crazy. Is there any updates on this case?
It is funny because when I clicked on the video and seen it started in Yorkton I was shocked. I am in Esterhazy and I completely forgot about this story until I started to watch the video.
Right? I felt the same way. Part of my family lives In yorkton. I pray she’s found alive
I've been in regina for about 5 ish years now and never heard of this case. Regina is getting really bad. It's one of the top places for human trafficking. Actual attempts to abduct people are happened in broad daylight. Like wtf?!
Now as an adult, if someone asked me to help them rent a hotel room, I would be extremely worried for them, wouldn’t just be able to forget it
If I knew they were a kid I would’ve called the police, maybe the kid will be in trouble with their parents but it’s better then that kid getting trafficked or killed or both.
I think I might consider calling the police in this situation tbh. But I'd worry that it could make the situation worse as well
She was asking for money, not sure why it was coded as “help”.
You make a fair point though.
If I was that old lady I would agree to help as long as we had a long conversation about the situation and I would get her location and number just to be sure. There is some situations where a girl wants to meet with her boyfriend and just wants to get a hotel room for the night. It would be better than doing nothing.
