And it shows, it is a lot more real sounding and when he goes high at the end (to the range that would eventually be his 'normal') it gives great emphasis, power and punctuation, which is what makes it my favorite song of theirs

He's got a voice that can reach the heavens , great songwriter and musician and owns every stage he walks on, a complete artist in every sense of the word . No one else sounds like him, he's got many imitators but no duplicators . The majority of artists on the radio today, I'm not saying everyone, but a damn lot of them sound identical. He's definitely a rarity.

The song dream on was actually based off an original piano piece that Steven Tyler’s dad (who was a professional pianist) would play at the house to warm up. The then 6 year old Steven loved the song so much that he would sit under the piano and listen while his dad played. Steven later added lyrics to it after learning how to play it himself. I’ve always wondered if they gave Steven’s dad any writing credit for the song.

The technique he developed to essentially scream through his head voice is astounding, most people are unable to physically do it because it causes you to choke. It's essentially the same ability as duel octave, that some singers are able to produce.

At some point during the early 80s Tyler almost lost his voice. I think it was his lowest point regarding his addiction issues... Back then Aerosmith had lost its 2 guitarists and replaced them and they went to record ‘Rock in a hard place ‘. Somehow Tyler managed to sing on that record, but if you listen to him his voice is almost cracked. Still, he performed pretty good, I don’t know how but he did. Afterwards he recovered, but that particular album is a testimony of his out of this world endurance.

Viejotrueno they were also at a low point in sales and notoriety by that point. Their collaboration with Run DMC on walk this way revitalized their career and created so many more new fans and reintroduced the band back into the mainstream. Then their albums after that (Push and Permanent Vacation) made them arguably bigger stars then they were in the late 70s. Without Aerosmith cleaning up and collaborating with Run DMC (which was neither of the groups idea. Run DMC had planned on sampling the song walk this way, as it is common to do so in rap, but they started messing around in the studio and rapping the lyrics of the song. A record company man heard it and convinced them to see if Aerosmith would actually perform the song with them on the record. Aerosmith agreed to do so and the rest is history), they would of just faded into the history books.

3:00 I appreciate how you address this topic. When I see children and teenagers singing outside of their current range, I shudder, because though it sounds awesome, they are very likely going to blow out their adult voice. My dad trained me to sing like him, classical/opera. So I learned at a young age how to treat my voice. Andrea Bocelli is a beautiful example of what a person is capable of if they mind their instrument. From the time he first sang in 1995, at the age of 37, it sounds exactly the same now, at 61 years of age, as it did then.
Respect your instrument, and treat it well. Or you will lose it.

Steven is great "Worlds oldest living teenager".. So many stars do lose their voice with the ravages of time. Over the years a few have managed despite a crazy lifestyle to improve. Having seen Alice Cooper and Iggy pop in early years and then the way they sing now it is an amazing transformation. The depth that they bring out in concert is crazy. They might not be operatic contenders but at 70+ years old they can still belt it out. Another I saw recently is Ted Neely singing the "Gethsemane" song live at his advanced age. Good job on the review. Mick Jagger hasn't done too shabby either keeping his voice up to snuff. Meatloaf did a duet with Pavarotti …

I still have Steven's harmonica from 1990. Always loved him!
I believe the doctor at Mass Eye & Ear who did Steven's laser surgery also said he has a large voice box & extra vocal cord. 👍

I remember this performance. I believe it was an MTV spectacle, and Mike Moran had orchestrated the strings. Most probably the pinnacle of Aerosmiths live performance of this song from there early work and a few years after Stephen and company had cleaned up their illegal substances issues and were at there most healthy and mentally sound in there career trajectory. Kudos to you Beth for reviving this classic performance!

Honestly, Steven Tyler might have even gotten better with age. If you listen to the abridged version of Dream On that he performed on American Idol, his screams are just as good, if not better than this version.

Seen them twice here in Norway. Once at the Oslo Spektrum for the Get a Grip tour and once about four years ago or so in Kristiansand when they and Alice Cooper (who was also phenomenal) played the outdoor stage at Odderøya. They were amazing both times. If there's one thing you can rely on with most of these bands who have been doing this for decades it is that they damn well _KNOW_ how to do a live show right!

You are soooo cute with your reaction...You should do more Rock legends or anything to do with Rock cause you seem to like their vocals more...Well it's true what they said in the 80's...Rockers had the best vocals then....Steven Tyler, has one of the greatest vocals till this day..

As a Canadian metalhead from Nova Scotia and has to live through the whole Maritime fiddle sea chanty era of the 90's this song is a welcome breath of fresh air. So cool in composition and Brittney Slayes slayes it again and again. Awesome epic tune for sure.
