It's funny that.
When the Ice Warriors' return was planned for Season 23... the hiatus happened...
when they planned their return again for Season 27... the show was cancelled.
Pretty amazing that the return this series actually went ahead as planned.
Same with the Autons.
They were removed from The Five Doctors.
Planned for Season 23 but the Hiatus stopped it from ever happening.
Amazing that they got to be the first monster for the New Series.
The ice warriors have been upgraded with Lego technology
machiv21 yes
Their hands are fused into that shape after holding the red hot handle of a sword in one of their rituals
@@iangreen4572 When I was a child💀
The colour grading on this episode is exceptionally good for an episode of this time. Very rich colours and depth!
The Ice Lord's appearance and mannerisms here really do evoke Darth Vader.
This episode came before star wars. I wonder if Vader's concept came from him. Helmet, cape, commanding persona, hissing. It's a green Vader.
...about time ole' Darth started caring about the environment!
@@Kryojenix Well, he did completely shut down polluting industry on Alderaan. And since his last visit there no more species have gone extinct. I think these results speak for themselves.
Something I always liked about the Ice Warriors was that, aside from the Ice Lords, each warrior had a different shaped head. It made them seem more realistic as a species with individual characteristics to me.
The Ice Warrior commander, the prelude to Darth Vader.
Also, David Prowse appeared in Doctor Who a couple years before "The Monster of Peladon" in "The Time Monster" (playing a Minotaur).
try removing HIS helmet!(I can see it in my mind's eye)
When I first saw this episode, I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if Darth Vader’s costume was inspired by the Ice Warrior Commander considering that this episode came out a few years before A New Hope.
That Ice Warrior commander is missing ssssssssomething.
Yessssssssss I noticed that too.
Higher ranking Ice Warriors receive lozenges for a sore throat.
Yeah it's missing passable special effects lol
@@geegeetomlinson2316 bah! humbug! the guns then were better than they are now!
the commander's voice isn't as raspy as it was in Seeds of Death. so a more acute case of asthma from being away from carbon dioxide laden planets for too long.
One of my favourite Doctor Who stories. I love to see The Doctor return to Peladon again and see how much it's changed since this story.
The Peladon stuff is some of my favorite stuff from the Pertwee era of Who. I like Curse a little bit more though as the Ice Warriors played against type and were not the villains. I guess old habits die hard in this story.
yes Curse was objective. this is merely goodguy/bad guy Curse is right up there with Star Trek TNG.
Azaxyr is one of my favourite one off villains in Doctor Who, he's up there with Marvik Chen and Tobias Vaughn
Chen and Vaughn were played by the same actor.
@@iangreen4572 I know. Kevin Stoney was a fantastic actor
Even Monster of Peladon, which wasn’t even that great compared to most Pertwee stories or its brilliant predecessor Curse of Peladon, it still far outranks the overwhelming majority of stories which followed. A testament to the high standards of quality of that era.
They had more imagination in the old 'who'
in my opinion 1st-4th doctor stories are the best in classic who including this one. idk I just prefer the first four in the classic series over the last 4 in the classic (I don't hate them, I just feel attached to them as the first 4)
That Ice Warrior commander = Prototype for Darth Vader
George Lucas had been a fan of Dr Who, hence the similarities. C3PO is a cyberman, R2D2 is a dalek & so on.
Man, the Ice Warriors sure are cool (No pun intended)... I haven't seen this episode in many years, and only remember small bits and pieces.
I know we haven't got any particularly great stories with the ice warriors recently, but at least the new designs are highly accurate to the old ones. Wish they hadn't buggered big time with the Silurians.
D For Dalek I prefer the new Silurians
Yeah i prefer the new silurians too.
In fact im not sure there's a single thing I prefer from the old who at all, except perhaps the actual writing itself
@steve gale Yeah, I've always explained it as the that too. In the classics, they were Reptilia sapiens, but in New Who, they were Homo reptilia. Ergo, they are two distinct species with similarities, like Homo neanderthal and Homo sapiens
D For Dalek I think both of the New Who Ice Warrior episodes are really good.
The new Silurians were just lazy frankly. I've seen fanmade designs for updated versions of the originals, and they look far better.
judge, jury, and executioner = judge dredd
+zinki120 And the costume is almost 100% Darth Vader three years before the fact.
+major600 that is why my friends keep telling me that Doctor Who is like the Grandfather of Modern Science Fiction for the last half of the 1900s (20th century). Doctor Who predates both Star Wars and Star Trek...and various other popular Sci fi stories across various mediums (like halo, Star ship troopers movie, the predators and aliens franchises). even the first alien movie was inspired by a Dr Who Episode. DW's Cybermen predates the Borg in Star Trek. now, what the Doctor Who needs to do is...I don't know...use I don't know telepathy or the Force to control his TARDIS from the distance.
I remember an episode which featured a forerunner to the Jen-Haddar from Star Trek DS9. They were a race of warriors who were dependent on a single chemical for their survival. Can't remember what they were called or even which era-Doctor they belonged to.
+major600 -- when you say chemical, I kept thinking that Viking episode with Peter Capaldi. but from a different era, uhhh...I have no idea what warrior race in DW that needs self-enhancing drugs.
+zinki120 WHY??? why are you everywhere?? I saw you on a ton of other comment sections too.. not even doctor who related.
this ice warrior sounds awesome
The new costumes of the ice warriors these days look so much cooler. :P
R.I.P Sarah Jane
From my memory I believe they show up in both of the Peladon episodes (Both starring the Third Doctor). Once as peaceful characters, then as the main enemy.
That Ice Warrior commander sounds familiar.
Welcome to the Universe!
Loved this show when I was a kid
Still love it today
Loved the actors
👍👍👍👍👍
ergo - you're still a kid!
Win.
From what i've seen on IMDB the ice warriors might make a return so thats always nice
Great episode
Great performance from Alan Bennion as the Ice Lord....he said on an interview that when there was a tea break everyone hurried off and he was left behind unable to do anything with his ice warrior claws!!
@1:32...if he was closer with his hand around the guys throat holding him a few feet in the air...
..."If this is a counselor's ship where is the ambassador?"
Alpha centauri has a cute voice.
Can't wait to see them returning in the new series.
Ice warrior leader is a drinking buddy of darth vader!.
Pretty amusing that he says "I'm your Judge Jury and Executioner" while wearing a rather similar helmet to Judge Dredd!
Arthur Scargill with black and white stripes in his hair
Nearly as daft as Arthur's real life barnet.
This was when he was moonlighting in a Mungo Jerry tribute band.
Nothing is confirmed as lost "forever" except part 7 of The Dalek's Masterplan, as far as I know. Just watch the reconstructions (sadly, few of them are official), or listen to the audio released (all official) if you don't want a slideshow. You'll have to do some hunting around for said reconstructions if you choose that, though.
Yup. Best scene.
It’s weird The Ice Warriors had literally some the worst masks and some of the worst puppet-try. But The Ice Lords stood out as some of the best looking aliens in Doctor Who I don’t know how that works out
Because it’s a blend of prosthetics and costume
The BBC have officially announced it!
I love the Ice Warriors!!!
Lost it at afro Wolverine at0:09
So. Farewell then, Alan Bennion.
The Ice Warriors hand looks like a lego hand.
In a time travel show, nobody ever really dies.
I mean in most episodes set in the future every companion ever is dead.
All they need to bring back now is the Mechanoids
Done! Hope you saw it ... but they're all girls now. Which is cool.
Judge, Jury and Executioner? Anyone else feel like singing Radiohead? 😂
Agree, 100%! The moment when Amy is attacked by the remains of a Cyberman at Stonehenge is in my opinion the scariest Cyber-moment of the New Series so far!
Indeed.
OK then. Thanks only seeing 4-5 Classic Who a month + others from the library. Missed part of the Seeds of Death and some are lost forever (Aren't they?).
Jon seems to have a bit of a grin on his face during this scene
Alpha Centuri got the short end of the costuming budget, looks like an old curtain
Without a doubt my favourite aliens of the early classic series. Thank god they're returning! I just hope they don't wreck them like they did with the Cybermen.
And did you’re hopes hold up? They didn’t for me sadly..
Not if they don't recognize any reconstructions they didn't make (which sadly/surprisingly is very few... like, three maybe).
I wonder if the Ice lords will be re-introduced in the new series.
+Ice-lord Tlotoxl One of em was
Weren't you there in that episode Lord Tlotoxl?
Well we've gotten an Ice Queen this season. That's the closest we've gotten to the look of the classic Ice Lords in new Who. But I hope the Ice Lords do make a return later.
Loving the badger hair!! 🤔
Yes she did :((
Although the Ice Warriors have only appeared in 6 stories, I wish they were played as good guys some more it’s kind of an interesting dynamic also I love the make up for the Ice Lord but it’s kinda strange how in the classic series, the Ice lords always looked great as villains but the average Ice Warriors look terrible with very stilted prosthetics
Ice Lord Azaxyr?
Alan Bennion (the actor) played all the Ice Lords in the old series. The first one was very hissy, so i guess he was just trying to make them sound different from one another... Perhaps.
what passes for his "lungs" was just more fit to the rich oxygen atmosphere of Peladon the other didn't have. maybe he got better training in aerobics on Mars before leaving. The other more a weight lifter.
Whereas here the Ice Warriors have to keep their big clunky armor. And it looks like they have :)
What a fantastic gripping story
Wait so the ice warriors weren't just the Second Doctor? Well at least they're in series 7.
Good luck BBC trying to fill a month of videos using only McGann's movie!
cool
Can't wait to see the Ice Warriors return in The Cold War!
2000AD, actually. :P
lego hands
Why doesnt the commander "hiss" his words?
2:01 he wears that hat because Voldemort is on the back of his head.
Hurrah! I'm united against them too!
so, these are some f the villans that will be appeaRING IN series 7 part 2, right?
Did she actually die?
Good story but can't watch it anymore because due to a mysterious degeneration of the tape. I guess the quality of the tape was not as good as official BBC Video cassettes. I have no idea why they got ABC TV and Village Roadshow involved in the Dr Who VHS range in the final years of the Dr Who VHS range. Did they ever release The Planet Of Giants from the Hartnell era? What would you pay for a great three part story? The Planet Of The Daleks one didn't break like this one as far as I know. I often wondered why they came down in price from $29.95 for an official BBC Video release to around $19.00 with the see through box. It is a shame that The Android Invasion didn't get six parts like this one.
judge dredd
Sorry, but this clip has some of the WILDEST costumes I've ever seen committed to film.
Also....what's Super Han's dad doing there?
Because, is every human a evil invader? No. So why would every Martian?
Ice Warrior leader sounds more like Zippy from Rainbow...😅😅😅
why is judge Dredd green
to appeal to other species not just races. why are his thugs not wearing helmets and yet have red lenses over their skulls.
*among us 100*
Oh my God! It's Dark Helmet!
bow ties, fezes and stetsons are, and shall always be, cool. in fact i wearing a bow tie and stetson right now.
OK. But lost for now so the TV showing it in celebration of 50 years wouldn't have all the episodes.
The actress Elisabeth Sladen did so yeah i guess the character kinda did too
The actress, Elisabeth Sladen, died of cancer on 19th April 2011.
I like the new Ice Warriors, except for their voice.
This is Doctor Who, not MARVEL.
Is this pre Star Wars? Well, well , well. What do we have here? Kind of obvious where Lucas stole a couple of ideas from then. Interesting that genuinely amazing sci-fi stories and ideas for characters came originally from England 🤔🤔. Ok the execution is a bit poor - but then again it was made for TV
The Beeb really missed an opportunity to do a Brexit inspired Doctor Who story about Peledon leaving the Galactic Federation aha.
So was this some commentary about the EU undermining workers rights?
It would appear so. At the time we had only been EU members for a year and in that time there was a massive miners strike which led to power cuts every day because the power stations didn't have enough coal to run all day long. This also meant that many businesses could only run for three days a week and had to shut down the rest of the week to conserve energy. This of course led the businesses suffering badly financially.
It was also about the miners striking which well went on to the 80s so there was a lot of commentary about such things in this story sadly the story missed the part about being good. It was not a very good story sadly too much padding.
There was not one long miner's strike, there were several short ones. There was an unofficial strike in 1969, one in 1972, when this episode was broadcast and one in 1974. The 1980s miner strike was between 1984 and 1985. The miners won more pay in the 70s, but the government held out in the 80s. Also the EU was called the EEC before 1993.
The faces aren't so bad actually, unless you're talking about the animation of them.
Oh, that. That was a shame to see - Such bad facial animation from a proffesional VFX firm...in 2013!!!! They must've heard, at least, of such thing as animation curves, if not facial motion capture.
These costumes look ridicules XD
But they don't look like judge Judy and executioner
before being a primarily feminist dominated show it is now, Dr. Who used to be a kick'emass. the Martian's guns are cooler here too, they actually warp a small portion of the universe collapsing one's heart to a singularity instead of the new ones which merely firing a cheaply post CGI red "laser" like everything else in the world. And while Jon Pertwee could get into a scrap for self defense he wasn't too obnoxious about it like certain NU whos are now.
Their weapons are sonic blasters., they fire sound waves
I think he should just kill "good ole Alpha" no trial just off him. the voice annoys the Hell out of me and he wears a curtain for a dress as not to expose his penile-shaped head/torso combo.
It has no gender. It's a hermaphrodite
@@mushroomhead3619I'm referring to the shape of the thing! not its gender! obviously "he" is a giant dick with a curtain.
He could never be a judge. The wig wouldn't fit on his head.
