I'm with you on finishing the build with the 390 in this galaxy. Shelve the 428 until you get this galaxy on the road. And of course you'll find a new block, clearly you're pretty good at finding parts that you need. Yeah, definitely the machine shop should have used dye penetrant and magnaflux that block. Well that's behind you now man. Keep going on that galaxy!
@@OmarRamirezGalaxie When I built two different Harley-Davidson Motorcycles I had those setbacks more than a few times. And many of those times, a better outcome happened. "Life Just Be That Way" sometimes. No matter what Keep Going!
That type of crack is not all that uncommon on these blocks. You can lock-n-stitch it 100%. Can just drill and tap a hole, thread in some threaded road with JB weld just to make sure the crack is stopped. Guys have just used some thread sealer on the head bolt too and been fine. I'd get the block pressure tested make sure there are no other issues. Keep in mind these are 50+ year old castings and were not all to great when new. 428 blocks are not cheap to find anymore and what you do find may end up having issues also. Is why stroking a 390 block makes more sense today.
That’s terrible news, Omar. I’m sure you’re feeling bad, right now. I’ve just gone back through your videos about this engine, and I didn’t see or hear any mention of you having had the block Magnafluxed to check for cracks that might be there, but be invisible to a visual inspection. I’d recommend adding that step to your list for future engine builds that start with a used block, considering the rarity and high cost of the blocks you are using! All the best, my friend. If it was my build, I’d be thinking about plugging in the 390, so I could enjoy the car while I go back to the drawing board on the 428! ❤ And remember, you are doing great, and you are learning as you go! See you soon! 👍👍
Thanks Christoper, definitely a huge bummer. I thought it was magnaflixed but I guess not. Won’t be giving up on this, I will definitely work harder to get it on the road

Don't give up !!!....I fell in love with the Ford Galaxie because of this channel !! I know it won't be easy but when you get it finished you will be happy you did it
Wow, what a kick to the nuts. Drop in the 390, and keep moving with the build. I'd get the 428 block repaired and keep on with the build for that block.
Man that sucks, Omar! Nothing you did wrong at all. And the good thing is, all of those parts can be swapped over to a new 428 block or even a 390 block. Did the machine shop deck the block at all? Maybe they likely wouldn't have noticed this anyway and the heat cycles made these expand. Keep chugging on! with that 390 for now and look for another block in the meantime. Now excuse me as I go thoroughly inspect the pics I took of my 390 block before I put the heads on....
About around 1992, I had a Buick Reatta come into our shop, with that Buicks odd-ball dash display, I got a collection of codes seemingly un-related. I found a freeze-plug at the back of that 3.8 V6 drooling coolant...the plug was fully rusted. Since access to the plug was poor, I pulled the engine...popping the plug out I was greeted with a solid wall of rust, the rust buildup was solid, some five inches down to the pan rail. I cleaned out the best possible & carefully drove a new freeze-plug in...sensing something wasn't right, I filled up the block with coolant to check for leaks...as I watched the block those five inches worth down to the pan rail started turning green...the block was eaten up paper thin & coolant was seeping out the block itself.
There is just something about the 64 Galaxy 500’s. At 13, I just found them beautiful… at 72 I still do…1964 was a fabulous time to be alive… the sixties Muscle cars.. the MUSTANG changed motoring in America… fabulous cars
Omar, that is a huge setback. But luckily you still have the 390 engine. I would not take the risk of buying another 428, I would choose the lock and stitch "option", because when that is done, then you will know that your block is good. When buying another block you will never know its history. Good luck my friend!
I contacted lock n stitch, they said they can repair it. I’d like to use the block if I can, since I already had the machine work done. And just as you mentioned, if the new block is cracked as well it would definitely not be good
Finish the build... My heart breaks for you.. many of us have been there... Keep pushing forward. Try and find a new 428. I don't like the idea of a fix at that location
Omar this is a simple fix. Yes it will cost a lil money. Disassemble that 390. Send to the machine shop. Bore to match your 428 pistons you have. Check that 390 for cracks first. Then start putting your 428 parts in that 390 they'll fit! Im building my 65 t-birds 390 to a 445 with trick flow heads. Good luck!
Drop that 390 Omar and keep moving until you get to your destination... I have a 62 im working on and Ive been waiting for your galaxie updates .. sorry for the set back but everything happens for a reason life will make take 2 steps back to take 1 forward. Trust the process bro you got this!!
lock'n stich was invented during WW2 to repair castings for vital machinery .I even have a company near me in Australia which does a lot of block and head repairs like yours. I would say that the block was damaged in the past by some one using too much lube on the head studs which has hydrauliced and the force has split the block. It is an old problem these days but in the past I saw it quite often, especially on BMW's.
When I was in the Army, in 1970, at Ft Jackson, SC, a fellow soldier, Charlie Hyde, from NC had a black '64 Galaxie 500 w/427 and 4spd. Often after our training day was over, we'd head on in to Columbia, and hit a bar. One night I didn't go with him. He told me later, he'd drunk too much and put his car in a ditch. He just abandoned it, and never went back to get it. He said his grandfather would get him another. He was kinda crazy, but a lot of fun. Kinda reminded me of Curly of the 3 Stooges.
I like the FE Engines but I've always liked the idea of putting a 460 swap in .talked to a guy yesterday at a car show he had a 63-64 Galaxie Station Wagon different hadn't seen one in years.
Reach out to Lykins Motorsports, he has a UA-cam channel and specializes in Ford FE's, Clevelands and Windsors. A good man to seek advice from. Good luck.
Bummer. It's great you've got the other engine to at least get the Galaxie mobile. Can you build the 390 as a 410? It has been a while, but I thought you could swap cranks/rods. My memory may not be exactly right on that, though. Maybe it doesn't make sense to put wear and tear on the 428 rotating parts since the 390 is ready to go, too.
Fix it!! Amazing engines. I had a 1970 t-bird with the 428 super cobra jet engine. It had been bored out and rebuilt when I bought it for $2,500 in 1986. It was a boat so it didn't do well in corners but it didn't seem to have a top end. The speedo went up to 160. 160 was 2/3 of the way back to 0. I had it pinned back to 0. The interstate felt like a backroad. Just the one time tho. Kept it under 120 for the most part.
With all those heads bolts being the common denominator. I wonder if there was goo grit and grease in the bottom of the bolt holes. Then during assembly it creates false torque readings and can bust later after some hear cycles. If the block was hot tanked this is less likely but still possible and cleaning up and tapping all holes is part of the process.
No shame in the 390. Some people will prefer it over the 428. The 390 built and tune properly will be fantastic. I do believe also that the 390 will be more period correct. It'll be a fix for a long time. 👍
The 64 was never offered with a 428. At the end of the day, a good running 390 with 10:1 , a nice cam, a six barrels set up or a dual quad will pull this car nicely and will sound amazing just like a 428 would. You’ll never have peace of mind with the cracked 428 block. Remember that the cracks are around stress areas ( head bolts).
Heart breaking after all the work. Yes, 390 in the car. Might as well try the fix. It is already messed up, so when it is back together you know what to look for before installing car.
I would put the 390 in it for now and keep looking for another 428 block. I see that you enjoy scouring the wrecking yards. Start searching for '66-'72 big F series (F700 or bigger) trucks. A small percentage of these came with 361/391FT engines that had blocks cast with 428 water jacket cores. Very easy to turn these into 428 FE blocks by boring them to 4.13" and adding a bronze bushing for use with FE distributors. Most do not know this so you might be able to pick up these engines for very little investment. Much easier than trying to find an affordable 428 block out of a car where everyone knows exactly what it is! JMHO
If you have the tri-power setup, why not build a 406? That would be the correct setup for that year. I’d be on the lookout for a 406 block if I was you.
Absolutely brutal. They should have checked for cracks before all the machining. Yep, 390 goes in . Put the 390 on the run stand get her running perfect , maybe the triple cabs?
Add the 390 and put the 428 crank and make it a 410. Skip the Antifreeze poison and pour in distilled water with a tablespoon of soluble oil mixed in or purified drinking water. What happens if a dog or cat drinks Antifreeze? Death in about 20 minutes! What happens if you blow a head gasket and you have Antifreeze in it? Goodbye Motor ! Bearings will freeze and so much more. I’ve been running what I told you to put in on my 87’ 5.0 H.O that came with forged pistons (87’ & 88’ only) for 418,000 miles and it’s my daily driver. Unless you live in weather that gets below 35 degrees then ANTIFREEZE is needed. Trust Me I haven’t changed my radiator coolant in over 7 years. You can take off the radiator cap and it’s bright clean no rust whatsoever. I had a 427 in my 66 F100 took it out and dropped an 87 5.0 with 69 351W heads. No thermostat , no radiator fan or electric fan !!! That’s right ……. Maybe one day will bump into each other since I live in the San Gabriel Valley and frequently go to the Pomona swap meet.
Thats such a bummer man! This 351w I'm building is my first full motor build too and learning so much. I didn't Magnaflux my block, I'm guessing a lot of people actually don't... would a tiny crack like that have kept you from building it in the first place? I'm not sure I would have thought it was a big enough deal to de-rail my plans.
I thought it was standard to magnaflux every block but I guess not. The crazy thing is that you won’t know until the engine heats up and everything expands. If I would have known from the beginning I would’ve fixed it either way just sucks I had to build it all and waste my time and money on it. Lock n stitch said they could fix it so that’s the next step
you have the 428 rotating assembly that's the hard part. Use any 390 block including the one you have. But save your money on machine work, nothing should get done to any block or head until it has been Magnafluxed first.
OUCH! The last time I rebuilt a FE block it took me 6 blocks before I found a good one that wasn’t cracked. Good luck in hunting for a crack free block. I wouldn’t be pining that block . Too many cracks already .
There are head bolt that go into the water jacket on the 302 block and you have to use tread sealer on the bolts to keep coolant from leaking up the bolts. Can you us tread sealant on the the bolts to stop the leaks?
I had a 4dr ‘64. My cousin gave it to me. It needed a new engine. The rings were shot. It smoked like a freight train. This was back in ‘70 in Detroit. The EPA wasn’t invented at the time. Smoking cars and trucks were normal.
No idea what the repair might cost but I'm pretty sure jay Leno has used Lock-N-Stitch to repair some of his engines. If they are near by it might be worth a visit.
Lock and stitch is good enough for Jay Leno, so I am pretty sure they are a great company. But I do agree, you gotta keep it moving otherwise you will loose motivation. Good luck
@@OmarRamirezGalaxie Good luck, I want to see that girl stretch her legs. What a beautiful car, and you are going to be very happy when the hard part is done. Found you via Tom Cotter and have been following since. Very cool and keep it up 👍
@christopherhess8523 thank you Christopher! This car has definitely been a huge challenge. I didn’t expect it to last this long but I’m determined to get it on the road
@@unconscioustruth1963 It must have, because cracks from the block freezing in the winter usually form on the side of the block or in the intake valley.
428 internals in a 390 block would be a 410 without having to touch the cylinders. Not sure about different pistons. Might need slightly shorter ones. May be able to use the 390 pistons. A 410 would be sweet. Research that and it may be an option for you. If I had the choice I would use as much parts from that 428! That thing sounded awesome. What cam did you use? I
I decided to get the block repaired, I’ll be taking it soon to lock n stitch. These blocks are getting more expensive to find. The camshaft was a custom roller from Oregon Cam Grinding
Yes I know you can use the 428 crank in the 390. I believe you have to use 410 pistons because of the pin height. I’d have to research it more but that sound like a great idea
@@OmarRamirezGalaxie Have you considered making the 390 a 410 using the 428 crankshaft, if the 390 is a truck based engine it would be a simple crank swap if not then you'd have to source pistons or something like that you'll need to research,, basically it's what Mercury did to make the 390 a 410,, I think,, maybe,, something like that,, hell you know bro you got the book man. All kidding aside do the 390 with the 428 top end, heads, cam and intake is what I'd do simply because I'd regret it and wind-up doing it anyway.
Didn't you send the block to a machine shop for a complete service ??? pressure test and magna flux . If I remember you even had it bored . Seems like your machine shop didn't do there job !!!! The rust in the water jacket makes me think this engine may have been a marine engine . Lesson learned I hope about who you trust with your engine machine work . Sorry to hear this as I thought you did a wonderful job building that engine ....
428's aren't that hard to find. I wouldnd't do the lock and stictch. Next time you have machine work done have them sonic check the block before you sink money into it. It would have turned up the cracks. Good luck.

Already got a gutted 428 gut the 390 throw in 428 stuff 🎉🎉🎉
Throw the 390 in bro.
390 in it that 428 is a boat anchor now bro!!
you have the 428 rotating assembly that's the hard part.
I’ve heard that FEs are notorious for cracks
There are head bolt that go into the water jacket on the 302 block and you have to use tread sealer on the bolts to keep coolant from leaking up the bolts. Can you us tread sealant on the the bolts to stop the leaks?
sigh...what a bummer
Huge bummer man, and I was ready to drop it in for good
That sucks man. Drop in the 390 for now. If you do end up buying a new block, make sure to get it magnafluxed.
Yes I’ll be contacting them to see how this can be fixed
Time to make the cracked block into the mother of all coffee tables ala like the Top Gear Set Jag engine.
Don't give up. It's a huge set back but f*'+ it. Throw the 390 in and enjoy your car.
put the 390 in and get it on the road
Lock and stitch is good enough for Jay Leno, so I am pretty sure they are a great company. But I do agree, you gotta keep it moving otherwise you will loose motivation. Good luck
Yes, they replied and said it can be fixed so we will see
@@OmarRamirezGalaxie Good luck, I want to see that girl stretch her legs.
So sorry that happened! The 390 should be great though as that’s what the car had from the factory right?
Yes 390 originally, I’m going to fire it up and see how it runs. It will definitely speed up to get it on the road
look up cracked engine block repair. People fix these cracks every day. Thanks.
Ah, man, that sucks.
Is that the same 428 that you got heatstroke over. Man.
Man, that sucks. I forget by this point, but was this engine block magnafluxed?
I thought it was but guess not man. It’s a huge bummer
@@OmarRamirezGalaxie I wonder what made it crack like that? seems like an odd area for an FE to crack at.
That makes me think sometime in the past it got very hot. I wouldn’t trust that block.
@@unconscioustruth1963 It must have, because cracks from the block freezing in the winter usually form on the side of the block or in the intake valley.
👍🔥💪🤝💯
Serious bummer....was it magnafluxed? Next time.....
Thought it was but guess not
Did you have the block magnafluxed and inspected beforehand?
428 internals in a 390 block would be a 410 without having to touch the cylinders. Not sure about different pistons. Might need slightly shorter ones. May be able to use the 390 pistons. A 410 would be sweet. Research that and it may be an option for you. If I had the choice I would use as much parts from that 428! That thing sounded awesome. What cam did you use?
I
I decided to get the block repaired, I’ll be taking it soon to lock n stitch. These blocks are getting more expensive to find. The camshaft was a custom roller from Oregon Cam Grinding
Sorry my friend.
Your machine didn't magna flux the block?
dont give up
I’ll be finishing up the interior for now have to keep going!
Correct me if I am wrong, but can’t you put the 428 crank in the 390 block and get a 410..? What do you think Omar?
Yes I know you can use the 428 crank in the 390. I believe you have to use 410 pistons because of the pin height. I’d have to research it more but that sound like a great idea
Go with the 390
No!
The Dynasty Green!
Didn't the machine shop magnaflux it?
Came here from hagerty
Welcome!
@@OmarRamirezGalaxie been asking around for a block from my US YT guys. Are the bores std size
Came here from hagerty
Yeah freshen up the 390 a little with the heads, intake and cam from the 428 then you can hunt down a mint 428 block in the Galaxie as redemption.
I like that. Redemption indeed!
Loc stitch and then epoxy studs in holes it works
I think it can be fixed just have to be 1000% sure and be very careful
390 bro
yea don't give up drop the 390 in get another 428 and use parts, I am sorry but fight thru
Thanks joe !
Yes I had thought it was magna fluxed which is pretty much standard in machining. This could’ve all been avoided.
Drop the 390
Drop the 390 in it until you can build another 428
That’s the plan!! I’m working on the 390 should be up and running very soon!
Throw 290 and it continued the progress
Gotta keep going forward!
428's aren't that hard to find. I wouldnd't do the lock and stictch. Next time you have machine work done have them sonic check the block before you sink money into it. It would have turned up the cracks. Good luck.
A BBM block would fix it if you have the $$$.
Haha I wish, that would be killer!!
I posted a UA-cam video on Facebook. Lock and stitch
@sleeperdude
Dang, best build on the net. Sorry to hear that
