I went with a Uni Stage II TCU shortly after going Stage II plus on the ECU on my MK5 GTI. Not sure if they have higher ratings on the new seven speeds, but the DQ250 DSG in mine starting getting hinky in shifts when approaching the factory torque limit (roughly 290 lb/ft on those), the TCU tune not only cleaned/firmed up the shifts, but allowing the full potential of the ECU tune was well worth the money as well. Would love for you to revisit this tuning of the yellow R, how's the tune and changes holding up, any surprises or things you'd do different? How's the extra belly pan protection, does it affect engine temps? You don't mention any of the other tuning companies, I guess because they aren't available in the U.S., but that would also be an interesting topic. For example in Europe König works together with VW to provide a tune that does not impact engine warranty (Called ABT Power by König), which is roughly equivalent to stage 1, but they do not provide any dsg tuning. Then there's Revo of course as well.
I have a 2017 GTI Sport DSG, soundaktor turned off and a AEM open air intake, otherwise stock and it sounds perfect in my book. I generally don't like 4 cyl exhaust notes and the intake lets the turbo noises through and the intake woosh... it never gets old!
KnightGamingDc5_ APR is overrated. I’m running IE stage 2 performance and DSG tune on my MK6 GTI and I love it! I also have supporting mods all from IE - CAI, IC and DP. Best part is, IE has the best customer service hands down!
Uni and APR are good options as well. We think you'd be very happy with IE's tunes as well as theirs. A lot of time has been put into our tunes on the development side making them a very high quality product. Plus, you can return it if you don't like it, pretty minimal risk.
We have a BurgerTuning JB1 on our '16 R, it's been installed for over 2 years and has worked flawlessly. That extra ~50hp/ft-lb made a pretty big difference.
I really wish they had a tune for my 2013 2.5 Passat. It sucks they stopped at the 2010 2.5 Passat. I wonder if the transmission is the limiting factor or if other major changes happened to the 2.5.
Dave J, we do have support for your 2013 2.5L Passat... if it's not listed on the website it's because they put these 2.5L engines in a ton of chassis and we may have missed it on the applications, just know our tune covers ALL 2.5L N/A 5 cylinders. :)
@Travis Worthington so a tune on my 02 Jetta GLX VR6 isn't worth it? The simple fact is that people have been running NA motors for ever. The first NA I worked on was a 71 super beetle with a 1600cc motor. I have done 4, 5, 6 and 8 cyl NA upgrades. With this it is so much easier to hook up a laptop and have it done verses the weeks of work I spent on cars like my 86 Merc Cougar with the 5.0 or the 97 Honda Del Sol si or my 71 Merc Comet GT with the 351 ci and 4spd manual.
Lucky you have dsg as a stage 1 manual melts the chocolate clutch. Over here a lot of us run stage 3 500bhp+ and launching is like a bloody missile taking off, keep up the awesome videos 👍
Here is an idea, uninstall the tune, take it to VW and let them run diagnostics. Report back on TD1 flag. Much appreciated, entire Golf R community North America
TCU tune is the best bang for the buck with these DSGs. The stock tune is pretty bad unless you drive it in manual mode all the time. I opted for the TVS stage 2+ stealth TCU tune and it's been a game changer. Pulled my JB4 for warranty purposes, prob will tune it after the warranty expires in 5 years
Can anyone comment on the reliability of the car after a stage 1 tune?? I'm quite new to car mods and I'm considering this option but am fearful of car parts breaking down/blowing up etc. Any advice would be appreciated thanks :)
When your car comes from the factory it’s tuned to pass emissions test, then get the best mpg, then power. What you’re doing is putting power as #1 focus. Stage 1, means you’re not pushing the car to its extreme limit. Track cars are built with the fastest quickest time in mind, so those are always pushed to their limits. That’s why they’re always so hot and have to wait in-between races to cool down. With a stage 1 tune, your car will be perfectly fine. If you notice hotter temps, feel free to get a cold intake or if your car is a turbo, an inter cooler. Or get an airtec vent.
I would love a golf R as my next ride. 70 yr old British guy on youtube put on an upgraded turbo from turbo technics on his Golf R and got nearly 600 hp. I was a little disappointed at the low improvements to the R from IE. I have a 2014 GLI and used a Unitronic stage 1 tune. It increased to nearly 50 hp and 90 tq. When I looked at the getunitronic.com website they don't have a Golf R upgrade available yet - but you should look into that in the future. I think Unitronic is better than APR, not too familiar with IE or Cobb.
That said, what if they had their own stage 1 tune where it costs you the same for that of an APR or IE tune. And be able to keep everything under warranty. They would make a lot of salesfolk happy.
I have a IE tune on my 2011 Q5 2.0T and it made a noticable difference in power and for sure torque. I said the same thing this is how it should've come from factory.
I drive a 2014 Wolfsburg GTI. What year, model, and hp after did you have? What kind of mods or bolt ons did you have to equip to help relieve the stress of said tube if any?? Any feedback would be amazing.
@@jbac5767 Wolfsburg? Love it! Mine is a '16 MK7 GTI Sport, originally "210" HP (underrated of course). Went APR stage 1 ECU and TCU tune on the 6-speed DSG. That tune has undergone a lot of revision in the past 1-2 years and it's better for it in my experience. 290 HP and 320 ft/lb is the latest crank figure on **87** grade fuel! I stick to that due to 91 ACN regional gas which causes the ECU to pull timing shown in logs. However, ran the 323 HP crank, 91 tune ran just fine with new intercooler, charge pipes, inlet pipe, turbo muffler delete, and high-flow drop filter. A lot of stuff for stage 1, right?! Your fuel might be better, by a lot. APR now has a fuel info page stating E85 might be an option IF your logs show fuel trims in range. An E30 blend put me on knock-free 380 ft-lb high torque stage 1 territory. Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
@@john_dee1431 Goodness!! Yea I'm lucky eith the Wolfsburg simply becuase it was produced in the Wolfsburg factory itself and everything is in German so the car has stood up even with my little bit of negligence. The car came with an INJEN CAI. I've done nothing else to the car because I know you must be specific when modifying a VW eapecially. I run 91 at all times and it's been good. The car feels surprisingly powerful for only having the intake and MAYBE 190 to the wheels. It's a 6 spd so I'll lose time there but I don't race or rag my car at all. I only get on it hard maybe once a week to keep it somewhat fresh. I look forward to tuning it one day and of now I'm simply doing research and asking around. Thank you for your feedback!

would have been cool to do low torque vs high torque on the dyno to compare the numbers. I called IE and the rep said that the stage 1 high torque file provides 50 additional torque over the low torque file, while i don't believe (even if crank torque).
I went with the JB4 at first with the APR dsg tune. Jb4 just never ran right. Jumped over to Cobb, and the OTS 93oct v100 was great, but started to max out the Hpfp and would get thrown into limp at 5k in 4th gear. Went with 5150 custom tune, now car pulls hard, and im actually beating some is38 gti's
Some One Could you clarify about the JB4 I was thinking of buying one since you can do it yourself. Since APR needs to use your car It’s a pain in the ass to do it.
@@GladiatorGaming the JB4 would cause random misfires and limp mode. And before George helped me tune it a bit. I was getting a trans code as well. i would get random CEL (P00000) and fuel rail pressure. I was also trying to fix it/tune it. And really just gave up. I was looking for flash tunes and went with cobb. Installing it was 10000× easier, as it's only a obd2 port plug. And the cobb ots pull much harder than JB4. Custom tune, feels and runs much better than the Cobb OTS.
@@GladiatorGaming if you have a 7.5, for now, get the Cobb Accessport. Just the cobb OTS tune you'll enjoy. Maybe once JB4 has dialed in the 7.5 i would stay away. You can always stack later 😁
A tune will also get rid of some catalytic converter strategy to cool or heat cat to stay in operation temp.. and get rid secondary O2 sensor values and secondary air pump. While keeping cat heat protection.
He mentioned it in this video, but there is a full explanation in another video. Only dyno near him is for front/rwd, so he puts the car in dyno mode and disables AWD.

Why not go APR? What make your go EE ? Or not unitronics like Dap
IE might have given the HM the tunes for free if he did an episode on it.
APR is too conservative and their support is garbage

Just whiting for your Neighbours to come out waving a pitchfork lol!!
Love seeing you get excited on the car and still loving that yellow color, great choice.
I really wish they had a tune for my 2013 2.5 Passat. It sucks they stopped at the 2010 2.5 Passat. I wonder if the transmission is the limiting factor or if other major changes happened to the 2.5.
IE has a tune for your 2.5, it’s minimum power gain but it wakes it up! It’s not listed on the site, but just buy the 2.5 Jetta tune and it works!
Dave J, we do have support for your 2013 2.5L Passat... if it's not listed on the website it's because they put these 2.5L engines in a ton of chassis and we may have missed it on the applications, just know our tune covers ALL 2.5L N/A 5 cylinders. :)
@@IEtuned THANK YOU! I'll be in touch. I can't wait to get this done!
Send us an email. I wouldn't be surprised if we actually have that and it's just not listed. Sales@performancebyie.com
Lucky you have dsg as a stage 1 manual melts the chocolate clutch.
Over here a lot of us run stage 3 500bhp+ and launching is like a bloody missile taking off, keep up the awesome videos 👍
Yeahhhh. DSG FTW
With this tune, how would you recommend a person adjust their maintenance? (i.e. frequency of spark plug, oil, dsg, haled changes)?
I’m halving the maintenance. It may be overkill but it’s worth it
I = super Jelly of the Humble Mechanic! Congrats Charles
I have a 2017 S3 DSG. 310 stock PS in Europe. Stage 2 (only Software an air intake) - 385 PS 0-60 4.0 dead.
:)
NICE
This guy is great! Thanks for this informative and entertaining video.
Any particular reason you went with this tune over others?
sponsor, presumably...
I absolutely love the IE Stage 1 on my '12 GTI... totally transformed the car.
Truth!
Here is an idea, uninstall the tune, take it to VW and let them run diagnostics. Report back on TD1 flag. Much appreciated, entire Golf R community North America
It use to have to be reported to get flagged. Not sure on this gen. It may auto flag like Audi
@@HumbleMechanic ODIS checks the lifecycle data in the ECU. Any writes to the ECU other than expected = instant TD1.
TCU tune is the best bang for the buck with these DSGs. The stock tune is pretty bad unless you drive it in manual mode all the time. I opted for the TVS stage 2+ stealth TCU tune and it's been a game changer. Pulled my JB4 for warranty purposes, prob will tune it after the warranty expires in 5 years
I know this post is one year old..but never heard of a stealth tcu tune. That's Impossible
I want it. But my drivetrain warranty!! 😣
@Open Ranks it flags my ecu for td1. So it does
After a few thousand miles and mods mature from new can’t wait to see golf r mk8 makes 🤤
When you have a tuning device but the clutch stinks for more power! 2018 vw gti
Yeah, get stage 2 clutch dude. I'm in the same situation. 17' GTI SE manual. I luv it though 👍🏿
My Mk6 had the same issue at stock power. Not sure why VW can't put in a decent clutch.
@@rennkafer13 agreed, that would be great if they did👍🏿
Wow that's great video 👍 sir
Or get an airtec vent.
some really great guys there ive met a few and good friends with one that works there soon my gti will get a stage one tune.
He makes 319hp and 353 torque
I would love a golf R as my next ride. 70 yr old British guy on youtube put on an upgraded turbo from turbo technics on his Golf R and got nearly 600 hp. I was a little disappointed at the low improvements to the R from IE. I have a 2014 GLI and used a Unitronic stage 1 tune. It increased to nearly 50 hp and 90 tq. When I looked at the getunitronic.com website they don't have a Golf R upgrade available yet - but you should look into that in the future. I think Unitronic is better than APR, not too familiar with IE or Cobb.
I really don't blame VW for detuning the car from the factory...the last thing they need is more of a reputation for being unreliable.
That said, what if they had their own stage 1 tune where it costs you the same for that of an APR or IE tune. And be able to keep everything under warranty. They would make a lot of salesfolk happy.
@@progmanmike I totally agree!
Authorized Mike just like Ford with Mountune 👀
@@progmanmike Or like Subaru in the UK with the PPP or Prodrive Performance Pack.
I have a IE tune on my 2011 Q5 2.0T and it made a noticable difference in power and for sure torque. I said the same thing this is how it should've come from factory.
I remember feeling the same way after tuning my GTI. And, like Charles alluded to, you'll want more :)
I have the United Motor sport tune on mine. Gave me 100 more whp and torque. With an intake and high flow cat downpipe from usp. Feels like an Audi rs3 now.
100whp is about right on almost stage 2 tunes
I put the Integrated Engineering Stage 1 ECM and DSG software on my '16 TTS amazing difference, have a downpipe waiting to go on so I can go stage 2.
I just love how the R pulls out on Launch control @4000 RPM, no drama, no spinning tires, no need to compensate for Torque steer... it just goes. 0-60 times would be interesting : )
Most with a proper stage 1 high torque are around the 3.5-3.8sec mark that's dsg
I need one of those data logger thingys
@@HumbleMechanic Draggy 100% They're beyond great
Isn't there a 0-60 built into the car? There is on my 15 GTI😊
@@JohnMaffa Performance pack I believe, but Draggy is great, there's leaderboards so you can compete or get a better idea of what your car should and could be
I recently installed IE on my mk7 gti, boy did it wake up on stage 2
Damn, I wish I would have jumped on a spektrum color. Love this color, Irish green, Chili pearl. Still love my lapiz blue. I hope you hold onto this car.
Convinced! I want a Golf R now .😍
Just found your channel. Coming from a fellow Golf R owner with kids, I loved seeing the car seat back there... lol
Yeah man!!!! My kiddo loves riding in the R
I just thought... "hmm, when is he gonna tune that baby...?" opened YT, there it is! ❤️😍
Excited for more! ❤️ **insert racecar-emoji here**

I've done a few stage 1 tunes on my previous cars and I always have that same response "This is how it should have been from the factory"
Our thoughts exactly! I guess the less performance-minded of VW may not feel the same way. We are all for better throttle response, a quicker car, and just making it a lot more fun.
IE FTW.
Just wait till you go big turbo brotha 😉 really wish I was nearer we could do comparisons on and off the course! Love the yellow, love the videos, keep it up! 🤘
Bug turbski would be cool!!!
Winston Salem!! Wait what? So when I get my new golf R at the end of this year, I might need to get in touch with you 😅
I'm jealous of that extra gear
i have the gear indicator on the cluster and mines not tcu tuned..Australian delivered car though so we got extra, better stuff..
Nice neighborhood and excellent video. 👌
I just did 1+ unitronic. And I am amazed and glad I did. VW of South Charlotte did the tune. I agree, it’s the way a Golf R should come no additional parts added.
it's always fun to drive golf,,,, I love these cars.
My 1st visit here!! Loving it already!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Subd, Liked and Turned on (all) Notification!!
Stay humble !!
forgot to mentioned, its 2am here in canada. gonna be watching your tutorial and other vids as soon i wake up in the morning. You should be on Netflix series!!
AWESOME! Thank you
Awesome, I think the main concern is not warranty, but INSURANCE though 😢 Premium going up or simply being rejected as a customer due to the tune and significant power increase 🤷🏻♂️ Thoughts?
Do you recommend to buy a golf r?
3:23 could you explain what you meant by this? My dad has a mk4 r32 but I’ve only driven it once so I’ve no idea what you are referring to
Nice addition to an already fun car 👌😁
Should install the new VW Dynamic center caps on wheels.. would look dope for rolling shots like the launch control
They don’t fit these wheels
We have them installed on a Golf R in showroom, hmmm... gloss black wheel package
@@EuRo7uN3r The center can is a slightly different size .
@@HumbleMechanic boo
HumbleMechanic I found out the hard way that they don’t fit. Bought them online on VW site and it stated they fit. Received them, took a wheel off and disappointment set in. They are still sitting in the box in my basement.
would have been cool to do low torque vs high torque on the dyno to compare the numbers. I called IE and the rep said that the stage 1 high torque file provides 50 additional torque over the low torque file, while i don't believe (even if crank torque).
Now you have to add the IE badge, would look good on that yellow.
I was thinking that too!
Hit up Dave, Charles's and we'll send you a couple.
Dude..your beard is awesome 👌
Hey, thanks!
Can you do all this upgrades to an old model card for example from 2001 to 2007
the newer 2.0t in that time frame will be a good boost. the older 1.8t, not as much
Why is the Golf R running on only the front wheels? Aren't R's AWD?
He mentioned it in this video, but there is a full explanation in another video. Only dyno near him is for front/rwd, so he puts the car in dyno mode and disables AWD.
Whats the low torque tune for?
European versions, did have this, or at least something similar! What they shipped to the West was not the same vehicle. Not fair!
I had to get rid of my 2009 GLI , stage 1 tune and i miss it so. I'm looking at getting a used 8v A3 Quattro. I want Haldex and the sweet tuning potential. The MQB platform can be argued as the best modern vehicle architecture.
I been running my 13 r on united motor sports stage 1 tune for around 100k miles. Love it. Want more. But I’m still on my factory clutch at 127k miles. Oh yeah 6 speed manual. Is the way the car should be driven and from the factory
Nice!!!! I love the DSG in this car.
@@HumbleMechanic I've read and seen that for the R, the DSG is the way to go and for the regular GTI, manual is the way to go. To each their own.
Stock clutch with that kind of miles!? That's good to hear. I have an itch to tune my new-to-me mk7.5 R even though I already feel like it's fun.
Tuners are Damm wizards!
Love your info, so glad a pro is sharing GTI content. on UA-cam . quick question? 2015 TSI 1.8. nice car but sways around corners . Thinking about converting to minimum drop springs or maybe sway bar to flatten it out without losing much of the stock ride. HnR? diameter of bar? Dont bother with either? lol. thanks 🙏!
Jeloussss. That thing launches drama free
With this stage 1 tune, can I put a down pipe on without the engine light coming on?
Took me about 1/4 tank of fuel for the tune to really shine. Is faster now then when I picked it up a week or so ago.
