Next week we will have PT2 up, that clutch break in timing throws the whole thing off. HAHA
Only 5%... When black Friday is right around the corner.
I want to thank you you answered an email to me when I was eyeing an R32 1st gen. A war buddy of mine talked me out of buying such an old car for a daily. I was eyeing a new Golf R and a 21' WRX STI. I went with the STI because of more backseat leg room and trunk space. But man your vids are intense.. I just wonder are you and Eric-The-Car-Guy still buds.. Hard to say you guys aint.
Can we get an updated garage shop tour. Would love to see your set-up properly rather than trying to eyeball it in the background of your videos. Was one lift enough now it's been a few years down the line? Is there space for a 2nd lift or too cramped?
You know whats better than a golf? Another golf!
A rabbit 🐰
A 2 door
It is for this reason… I have 2 mk4 gtis
A daza swapped Golf
A Skoda
i have this turbo on my s3 for the past 60k miles. good reliable power and no issues to speak of and is also my daily driver
It’s a fantastic turbo.
Never considered buying another VW - until I've started watching Charles. He's energized me to rethink this whole thing. Only issue is that I don't live near Charles and won't be able to deploy his skills to work on my vehicle. Charles - do you do road trips?
The EA888 Gen 3 on up are pretty reliable, still have the water pump gasket issues, but nothing like they were. If you modify ANY car of ANY brand your gambling. Just keep that in mind.
We used the cardboard method during my time in the Air Force especially for a portion of the wingtip that has screws of different lengths into nutplates inside of a fuel tank. Ensuring the right one goes in the right spot plus hardware accountability being so important in aviation maintenance 10/10. Love the videos man, keep up the great work!
Love your content, Charles. You make me wish two things.
1) That I had a Golf R
2) That I lived close enough and had enough money to get you to do literally all the work on it, so I never had to deal with it. Lol.
Did my mk6 gti clutch in my driveway on jackstands. First time even removing the trans and surprisingly, i didnt struggle at all.
I wish there was more people that used EQT for their builds, only YT ik of that showed his progress with EQT is Jewel City
Great setup. My S3 made 411HP / 411 Torque (469/469 DynoJet) on pretty much the same setup on E50. The only difference is I’m running MPI. The turbo spools by 2900RPM and the transient response is like stock. It’s a great option if you want great response and a decent power bump over stock.
What yr. I'm looking at a 2017 for 25k with 50k miles. What problems should I look for
Honestly that clutch is why I think the DSG is superior in the newer golfs.
Such a great video. As always, I appreciate you homie! The car feels amazing.
Got to see this car in person last weekend, nice work Charles
LOL. This Golf already had wayyy more horsies than it really needed as a DD. But I guess literally more power to you for doing the mods. Pity that lovely red clutch will be invisible to the world. But you'll know it's there. 😉Love the casual pop culture references. Look at me! I'm the captain now! 👀
I learned the cardboard trick from taking off the front cover on my vq35hr to do gallery gaskets. Not only are there bolts around the perimeter, but also in the center for various accessories that happen to also hold the front cover on.
IE is gold, imo one of the best off-the-shelf tunes available. Customer service is top notch, 99% included with the purchase of the tune. Not like other companies that if you want them to review the tune, recommendations etc, will charge an extra fee.
Besides that their app makes it so easy to make changes and do dyno runs, no laptop required / (only on mk6 platform requires laptop).
I'm excited to see this build. I am supposed to get my HPFP internals any day. As soon as I swap that I'll be running full stage 2 true flex on my 7.5 GLI. I am curious the noise from the IE down pipe as well.
0:15 that Golf reminded me the 1st generation Skoda Felicia :D
I knew about the cardboard trick, and totally forgot to do it on the Mk1 TT I'm rebuilding. Sad Day. Thanks for the great tips though Charles, I've used plenty of other things you've taught me!
Great job humble, I swear Ian is the man at tuning!!!💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Your channel is a real treasure trove of inspiration. Thank you for your contribution!🐟⛳️🍍
I've had to use your cardboard trick on my Mkv several times. Thank you!
Installed that 2260 Garrett Powermax turbo on my Mk7 GLI. It’s a beast, especially on E30. The owner of this R will enjoy it!
Stock engine and what boost?
@@GiuseppeBusso7 yep. Stock engine along with aftermarket intercooler, CAI, turbo inlet pipe, charge pipes, downpipe, catback exhaust, HPFP, flexfuel kit, plugs, engine and trans mounts, dogbone mount, etc…
Essentially the same tune from IE that Charles is about to install on the Golf R.
Great video and set up! I'm running the same set up on my daily driver 6-speed Alltrack, just with added multiport injection + hellcat in-tank fuel pump. This is a fantastic direct bolt on set up.
considering a similar setup on my GSW, what did you do/who did you go for for tuning?
Professional detailer! Not surprised to be honest. Most mechanics I've seen here in South Africa drive around in a s***box car that doesn't look like it'll make it to the next service :)
I learned a lot from you buddy.... Always on top of your game.....Great videos n sound...
So for the Garrett turbo install, what tune did you use. I have a 7.5 and my tune is IE. The lkast modes I want to do is turbo, lpfp, mpi. I looked at IE and they say they are still working on the tune for the turbo for 2018 Golf R.
Love my IE Stage 1 tune on Mk1 Tiguan - it rips and has been dead nuts reliable
Best video yet. Keep up with the great personality
I bought the alignment shims from ECS since i dropped the subframe to the clutch and my camber adjustment was off quite a bit. Definately worth the money to be able to not have to put any thought into realigning the subframe
Watching this has reminded me that I'm glad I got rid of my mk7.5 gti. Thanks :D Love the content, just never could enjoy the cars like so many others do. Something about them just isn't me. (honestly it's a bunch of little things combined)
I went away from VW over the need for tools and lack of manuals under 400 bucks. But damn am I jealous of thier tunability. In a Hyundau Veloster N and the fuel system can't keep up with big power demands, and Korea hasn't figured out interior quality yet.
get a mk4 with a 1.8T, problems solved. super diy friendly, high quality and ready for big power
If only I lived near your shop, I would do a full IC and mounts. Also air ride sounds good. :)
Dustin is so dreamy! 😍😍😍😍
Agreed!
Hi daddy!
Great Pitch Meeting reference.
you got me using the carbaord trick for alot of things i work on now
Hell yes
Thanks Charles
Seeing the Golf R on the frontwheel dyno in the beginning, I was a bit confused as I always thought the Golf R was 4motion by default??
It does have the Haldex awd but there’s a sequence you can do which will allow you to use it on a fwd dyno.
It's on-demand awd
Mod's before maintenance. 😅 Looking forward to part 2.
Charles, only the manually switched Mk 7r have that.
With the box around the ecu
greetings from germany
Where can we purchase the trans mount and motor mounts you used? I have a 2019 mk7.5 GTI 6-speed manual.
Always brilliant videos 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Your next project should totally be helping me with my Mk4 ALH TDI build! 😅
I did not know that any of the Golf R platforms came in a manual? That's awesome now I want one! Sorry, I thought the last good Golf was the 2004 R32. Might still be?
Beautiful.
I was hoping you might be able to point me in the right direction figuring out a fueling issue on my mk7.5 ...
I am currently losing fuel rail pressure when accelerating. It will dump power hard. I replaced my stock hpfp with ie internals to a 034 and did not fix it.
Awesome video, wishing I had kept my 19 Golf R. Speaking of Golfs. I do have a 19 Alltrack SEL (1.8t) that I am considering finally modifying. I am 2nd owner buying it in 19 with 6k miles. All services have been completed on time, OEM at the dealership. Car has been absolutely solid with nothing breaking except of course the dreaded sunroof leak. Thankfully very minor. I am at 68k miles currently. I do not know how much is shared with the Golf R being this is a 1.8T DSG awd verses the Golf Rs 2.0T DSG awd setup. If I were looking to do these same mods hoping for same or similar power figures what else would I need to upgrade, change? The DSG? The Haladex? Axles or prop shafts? Essentially making my Alltrack a clone Golf R Estate (the European Golf R wagon we never got).
8:30 I appreciate the Pitch Meeting reference lol
Appreciating Pitch Meeting references is TIGHT!
Hahah it’s one of my favs!
Charles got the new M12 Stubby. Very nice.
It’s awesome
Amazing work on
"start the engine mount bolts by hand" yeah theres me thinking it wasnt aluminium and sheared the thread...couldnt find another one in the country...BUT a friend was scrapping one..crsis averted...
Can you make a Video on a B5 manual transmission in response to the clutch grabbing so high? Apparently it’s an issue, no one knows VW’s as well as you, looking for adjustments in particular, looking forward to your video.
Thanks
Good work. I usually remove the subframe too. But what I did not like the new turbo inlet was way smaller then the old one. Are they doing that for backpreasure or was that an upgraded turbo already.
Also, I feel your frustration with Siri. My favourite is when you ask it for directions and it try’s to send you to a different part of the continent.
Ah yes, Mk7/7.5 R Downpipes. Definitely not me having flash backs of doing mine in my driveway years ago, screaming, forcing the drive shaft over with a pry bar to yoink it out, cutting with an angle grinder as we pulled more and more out.
Shaould have upgraded the diff with a WaveTrac LSD. Did that on mine while replaceing the clutch and it was an amazing upgrade
That is an awesome upgrade and 100% needed on a GTI. I think the R will be okay being AWD.
Have no fear!
Charles In Charge!
I just got that bleeder block a few weeks ago for my MK6 GLI and had a doozy getting it on too, almost thought i got the wrong one or something
Keeping the oem one is actually the way to go, just gotta pop out the delay valve with a small pick. The ECS one is heavier and doesn't lock into the transmission case like the oem one.
Also have seen quite a few ECS clips break off and cause the clutch line to pop off.
The oryx white looks soooo good
I agree. If the MK8R was that color id have gotten a white one
Hey @HumbleMechanic. I've got a mk4 1.8t jetta, and I was wondering if you had any ideas for upgrades? And maintenance...I'm bad at that 😂
Dustin looks like Kid Rock's brother Man Rock. I'll see myself out.
Bawitdaba homeboy.
Hey Charles, how many shop hours should one expect for an IS38 swap for a mk7 GTI? Stock location intercooler upgrade along with it. (or anyone who's paid a shop to do it)
IE must have gave you beta file. Tune is not out yet for that turbo upgrade for MK 7.5 R’s
That may just be for 2019. 2019 was different
You have the best cliff hangers 🤣
Your videos are a true resort for the mind and soul. Thank you for your talented channel management and amazing content!🌔🤎🍅
Good video as always, Charles! Months ago you mentioned the rumor of a (potential) limited run on MK8’s….any news on that front?
Nothing new sadly
@@HumbleMechanic appreciate the response!
how i changed my downpipe was easy. Just did a engine swop ;) love my mk5 gti♥
golfs come with a coolant leak from factory so that checks out
Feature not a bug.
Thank god mine happened under warranty.
ooooh the VW THING !!
On the MK4, swapping to a single mass flywheel usually means having to swap the crank pulley for a dampened one, to counteract an unbalanced crankshaft.
Do the mk7s not have to do that?
You are real masters! Your content always pleases with high quality and professionalism. Continue to please us with your works.🌭👹🐪
Did you need to pre-fill the slave cylinder/throw out bearing with brake fluid before installing it? I’ve bled plenty of brake systems and clutches, I don’t see how you can bleed that thing 🤔 there’s no way for the air to be pushed through… or do the bubbles rise to the top where the bleeder screw is? How do you get trapped air out of the slave cylinder?
I think I mention that in part 2. Haha short answer is no. I tried that one time, and ended up blasting myself in the face with brake fluid
You should do a 09G to DSG transmission swap for the 1.8 tsi Jetta.

Hey Charles love the content 🔥🇿🇦. Have a question if you don’t mind answering. So as a person that wants to buy their first car being used doesn’t help. But basically I want to know if whether a rod bearing failure can be detected before it happens. I’m guessing it’s one of those thing that happen without warning right ? Because you don’t know the history of the car etc. So can it be detected before it happens? And is it worth it to replace rod bearings at all like as “preventative maintenance” will that do more harm than good? My plan is to do a compression test along with checking service history. Other than that there’s not much more I can do to prepare myself from catastrophic engine failure right? Let me know if I’m missing anything guys. Obviously I’ll also check for fault codes, accident damage. But other than that I think it’s all about luck right?
I'm not Charles, but I think if the car has good documented history, including regular oil changes, and doesn't show signs of abuse goes a long ways towards getting a good car. Always pay for a pre-purchase inspection at a good shop NOT associated with whoever is selling the car. This improves your odds as well. The EA888 is a sturdy engine, it would have to be heavily neglected or abused in order to spin a bearing. Only consider a car that appears to have been loved by its previous owner.
Reputable tuners been puttin me off on doing stage 1 software on my 2018 DSG Golf R. They say the 7-Speed dq381 is trash and really only rated by VW to withstand 420nm for any amount of time. The 6-Speed dq250 was rated for 600nm and is so much better supposedly. Anything to it or just BS?
What is your opinion on how the inlet pipe affect the pcv system. I blew lots of smoke but the moment I went back to factory I take and inlet pipe all my oil burning issues went away.
SHEEEEESH IE FTW
Hello there! Have a great Weekend!🙌🏼🙌🏼
Cheers my friend
@@HumbleMechanic Cheers!✌️
Seeing you struggle with Siri was unbelievably relatable
Hi Charles, what turbo upgrade would you recommend for an MK6 GTI? I am full stage 2 Unitronic with all their bolt ons. Is the KO4 the way to go?
The worst thing about MK7GTI Transmission removal and install is When reinstalling the transmission Figuring out the routing of the Charge pipes, the wiring harness, and the SAI hoses In front of the transmission..They all need to go In a specific orientation....
Goog job ❤
i actually have a set of rotiform but they dont make 20's no more for my rim set.
Shout out to my fellow WORKING mk7.5 R’s out there! (handyman)
Wait a minute did you just come down the stairs like Mr. Rodgers 😁
Hahahha I kinda did
What brand body kit is on this car it looks great.
Hey...if I brought my car to you, could you Stage 1 my 2017? Need everything you just did except turbo and intercooler I'm thinking. DSG too.
He’s like the plumber with the leaky taps and the bald headed barber
I may have chosen to drop the engine and trans together if I was doing all this in one shot. I also leave the rack bolted to the subframe when I pull them.
I don’t do the rack that way. Seen too many broken power steering connectors
@@HumbleMechanic I disconnect the harness at the top and take the harness out with the rack/subframe all in one.
Always wondered why is DNUE E40 only? Does it need an upgraded HPFP + RS3 LPFP for full E85?
They said it would likely need MPI for full e85 too
@humblemechanic the turbo manifold inlet seems smaller aperture and therefore more restrictive, is there a reason for this?
You doing a video on the ID Buzz when you went for media day?
No. I did a little short content. But not a whole video.
Is the clutch in the mk6 R that much stronger? I have one with an APR stage 1+, so it's around 315ish hp and it doesn't slip at all and it's far from a new clutch.
Question: on dyno - program AWD off through vcds or just un-plug controller?? Thanks.
you can do it with out the scanner. Its hazards on, and a series of gas pedal presses.. I think it's 5? that disables the rear wheels
@@HumbleMechanic Thanks. Perhaps I'll try that with my car and see if I can sizzle the front tires... I'll add to the accolades - your channel is both entertaining and informative. Thanks for everything that you do. I hope that you're living the dream with your content creation. It sure brings a lot of people joy, useful information and entertainment! Drive Fast, Take Chances! T.
Nice 👍🏻👍🏻
More power, more agressive clutch... how about the crank thrust washers?
That issue is blown out of proportion. The chances of it failing are extremely low
@@garrettbundy1810 you sure? Cos my friends big turbo Audi S1 just blew them, total engine failure
u make us video "it's easy" but in reality is another world level LUL
How would something like this cost to do (both parts and labor)?
I really wished I had the money and skill to upgrade our Tiguan R line. Maybe make it equivalent to the Euro Tiguan R or my dream would be a vr6 swap. Love this car though wish it was more unique
Why does the intake look smaller on the new turbo?
Yes, big gasket, small holes...
Watching this reminds me I need to do timing chains and a dual mass flywheel on my mk5 r32 and that’s full of sadness
