While I agree with your premise, I'm a bit disappointed in the way this comparison is presented. There needs to be some sort of purpose. Something they're trying to prove about the differences between them. All they seem to be doing is say: "The Mustang is a better car for going fast." Which is kind of a no-brainer.

It's not only faster with a DSG but they're also missing the entire point of the Golf. The point isn't just to be fun in a straight line, the fun comes from the fact that you can absolutely chuck it into a corner at full speed and not die. It is absolutely a joy to drive on back country road. Source: I own a 2024 Golf R and I live in the mountains.
Had a Volks R, loved the way it handled. Plus I had it set up with a full stage 2, it was a beast. Dyno said it was putting out 390 Hp 422ft pds of torque, That was in #1 setting, never dyno in #2, but it was quite a bit more power.
Can we get a redo with the DSG Golf R? It would be good to see the difference. I know everyone else is complaining but it’s fair to say it’ll be a successful video after all 😂
They probably just run what's available to them. Anyone with a brain would've brought the DSG if they're trying to race a car with 171 more horsepower.
Let’s remember commenters, the Mustang is on All Seasons and the Golf is on Pilot Sport tires. Get a driver with a redline clutch drop and it would have done better but would still lose in the end.
Id love to see this vs thw dsg golf r. My golf r (older) dsg ran 12.8 all day bone stock. Hot lapped. No tire pressure adjustment. Jsut ran 12.8s the manual version is more than a second slower in the 1/4
Agree my cousin had a mk 7.5 golf r dsg auto he did 12.8@108. Yes manual a second slower but only if your great at it. Would have smoked mustang by one second.
The backseat is actually fairly usable, my kids when they were young loved them. My opinion, it's clear Ford put an effort into making the rear seat usable. The Mustang is appointed with one of the better 2+2 rear seats that can be found. Say what you want about that VW, at a quick glance it could be one of 20 different cars. At a glance a Mustang is instantly recognized. There comes a time when you no longer want a 4 door car, buying a sports car makes a statement in your life. For those in that market; a Mustang is very hard to dismiss. It's hard to say that the shear competence of the Mustang hasn't forced BMW to significantly increase their game with the BMW M cars. Here's your decision maker when comparing a M2/3/4 vs. a Mustang, sure the BMW is a quicker, it's nicer on the inside, however you know with zero doubt, you're gonna be dumping money into that M car to keep it on the road and out of the shop. A Mustang on the other hand is built to drive to hell and back as if were any other day.
But there's no way an adult is going back there (even a short petite one) for more than a mile or two. The VW, while not a cavernous rear seat, is capable of adult comfort even on a road trip.

@@krane15The manual is also just slower no matter who is driving the R compared to the DSG. Same deal with the Mustang and the 10 spd auto vs the 6 spd manual. The individual gears are quite tall in both cars for the manual which is part of the reason.
The 5.0 with a six speed manual gear box is the way to go... fun to drive, fun to wake up the neighbors and reliable all day long... hell it even gets decent mileage.
Oh yeah I have a 6 speed manual and it’s a kick. 1st and 2nd pull like a freight train. Just a few bolt ons and a race tune, and this car is a monster. Auto is nice in traffic and for drag racing but that’s the only advantage IMHO.

Any car buyers looking for a new car probably wont line up a VW Golf, a Benz and a Mustang as a choice. These cars are targeted at different markets. Gotta luv the v8 though. There is no replacement for displacement, no substitute for cubic inches. Sadly, Mustang is the last v8 left in the market now, its all there is, and its days are almost certainly numbered, for now at least. Mustang is a much simpler car technically, service and repair costs will be much higher with the German cars, they are technically more complicated.

I understand sometimes you have to work with what you have, but as soon as you mentioned that the Golf was a manual, I knew you guys couldn't be serious about this video. Or maybe you were, which is even worse. If the point was to demonstrate the value of the Mustang in terms of performance, unfortunately, you missed the mark. First, the 0-60 time of just over 4 seconds that you mentioned for the Golf R applies when it is equipped with the DSG. The DSG only adds $800 to the MSRP but significantly enhances performance. Second, you quoted the Golf R as having 315 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Again, this would be correct if you were discussing the DSG version, which is not featured in this video. The 6-speed manual version has less torque than the DSG, at 280 lb-ft. There’s no reason to expect a 315 hp sport compact to be faster than a 480 hp sports car, but if you're going to base the entire video around a particular car, in this case, the Golf R, at least use the car whose stats you are quoting. To reiterate, the car you are discussing (Golf R DSG) and the car you have (Golf R 6-Speed) differ significantly in performance. Mustangs and pony cars in general have always offered great performance for the dollar. That's not newsworthy. However, trying to make a point and then choosing the worst example of a car that is already at a disadvantage doesn’t help your case. If the goal is to show how fast a car can be compared to similarly priced cars, the Mustang, as optioned in this video, is actually more expensive than the Golf. I'm not criticizing the inclusion of these cars in a video together, but at least make an effort to properly inform viewers about what's happening. Additionally, continuing to discuss how much faster the Mustang is, as if there isn’t a clear reason why the Golf R ran a 16-second quarter mile (maybe 15 in better condition), is hard to understand. Motorweek recorded a 12.5-second quarter mile at 111 mph in the Golf R. Car and Driver reported the same time as Motorweek, and Carwow reported a 12.3 second quarter. The Mustang in this video ran a 13.6-second quarter mile (assume a 12.6 in better conditions). Don’t skirt around the issue; address it directly. Otherwise, thanks for the time and effort put into these videos. I just wish there was a bit more purpose and understanding behind what is going on here.
@@evital7527 This is correct. The Mercedes should've beat the Mustang from a dig if they used launch control and actually started at the same time. The guy started late AND didn't use launch control..

It's not supposed to be apples to apples. That's boring. The real world exists for a reason. If you rolled up to a light and wanted to race to the next one what would happen. That's what's cool about these comparisons. They are both 46k and built they way they are built
I own the Golf. I highly doubt the 'stang can keep up with its all wheel drive torque vectoring system when you get off a straight line and actually start turning like you would on a track or in the real world. Just tune the Golf to Stage 1 or Stage 2 so it also makes 400+ horsepower and it will be as good or better than a muscle car in pretty much any arena.

As someone who owns a 24 Mustang GT premium 6MT IF you can only afford/have 1 vehicle Golf R is easily the better choice. However if you have a daily and a second "fun/weekend" car Mustang with a Manual in my opinion is by far the better option....and yes the 10speed is faster but the 6MT again in my opinion is "funner" to drive.
I don't care the performance, it can be the last car, but the sound of the Mustang gives goosebumps; that's enough for me to buy that car, although the interior is questionable. I don't like any electric cars, not even hybrid ones. Thanks for the video.
Mustang all day. Especially where I live which is close to sea level and never snows, rarely rains. Anyone who would pass on that Coyote V8 for a nicer interior isn't really a car person in my book.
Coming from the Elantra N, I can't help but love my new s650 Mustang GT. Coming from that Hyundai Ecobox, the interior of my base GT is still a pretty decent upgrade. (far less creaky plastic)
@@joshc606 If they don't have an Auto then the least they could do is not quote stats from the DSG Golf R to set the entire video up. Conventional auto vs DSG should be the comparison, or both manual. Dual clutch and AWD in Golf is something else off the line. DSG variant also gets more torque stock.
That screen and capacitor buttons in the VW may look nice but they’re way more frustrating than the Ford’s. I’ve lived with both and it’s not comparable. The Golf 8.5 reverts to steering wheel buttons and is meant to improve the software.
My take, the Mustang for weekend fun,and the VW for the daily driver family car. The Mercedes while it has a Pretty interior, for some reason doesn't appeal to me enough to spend that much on.
An automatic Golf R might have still lost, but the outcome would likely have been tighter. As for a manual Mustang versus a DSG Golf R, it's hard to determine which would come out on top. Perhaps that match-up might be for another day.
How fast and how far you can put your foot to the floor doesn't make one car better than another. The golf would eat it on a track. The mustang is stone axe technology incomparison to the VW.
If you had the automatic mustang, why not compare it to the dsg on golf r? It is a no-brainer comparison, the results may not have varied a lot but atleast it would have made more sense.
I love the mustang gt I really do, I now have a golf R manual and will go back to a mustang at a later time bought it because it was the last of the manuals. The golf R traction control is very restrictive and combine that with slow shift I understand why they did a 16sec 1/4 mile. There is no way with the traction control off and in special mode that you would have done a 16s 1/4 even at that elevation hell a regular civic can do that. You need to launch that thing at 5k and shift it like you mean it. They will do low 13 high 12 the golf R engine is underrated will put about 30x hp at the wheels while the mustang will be around 390 just an fyi. Also the mustang traction control is way way less restrictive will still spin the tires under full acceleration.
low 4s for the golf seems unlikely as that's the same as an AWD M340i which has 382 horsepower and 369 lb ft of torque. Maybe it weighs more but still not enough to where 315 horsepower and 295 lb ft of torque would allow it to match that acceleration.
I have a Golf R7.5. The 8R has some goodies I wouldn't mind but I may wait for a year or so and find a used one with low miles.. I know it isn't the fastest car. Obviously the Mustang has more power. But it doesn't have one thing the VW has. MPG.. 😆 Fun car to drive, practical DD.. If I had a V8 I'd be at the pump EOD. Love them both for different reasons. Big fan of the Terminator '03 SVT 😮💨

Just paid 50k for an Acura Integra lol when i was 17, corvettes were 50k
Yeah, I wouldn't be shelling out for that.
Omg give the golf R a dsg and make it fair... The Dsg is amazing!
Omg that guy can't drive a manual!
The guy was awful at manual. Yes, the DSG is a worlds difference.
He's 96 what would you expect lmao
@@johnnyVGtranIn a manual your trap always same its his 60 foot must be in the 3. My friend first try was also 16@97mph but after 5 tries he did 13.8@97mph but his 60 foot is 2.0. Even your great in a manual your going to loose half a second its not a fair race 😂 .
Everyone complaining about the comparison between two very different cars needs to understand a company life TFL does’t have a budget of Top Gear so they need to make content with what they have.
I’m sure they’d love to have a DSG Golf but they might not have had the option.
Great video as always guys I really enjoy your content.
Cheers Pat🇦🇺
While I agree with your premise, I'm a bit disappointed in the way this comparison is presented. There needs to be some sort of purpose. Something they're trying to prove about the differences between them. All they seem to be doing is say: "The Mustang is a better car for going fast." Which is kind of a no-brainer.
They have no budget?? But yet they use a Mercedes Benz 😂
@@Empok_Nor you might want to go read that comment again bud, I said they don’t have a budget of Top Gear who could just put an order in to any manufacture for what ever car they desire.

Man y'all making me want to buy another mustang 😅
The 24 mustang is sharp! Looks great and drives great 💪🏻
Looks too much like a Camaro.
This drag race is incredibly flawed. The DSG Golf is considerably faster than the manual.
What amazes me is 46000 for a GOLF!!!
Still below the average price for a vehicle in 2024 - I cannot believe what pick-ups sell for - talk about a rip off!
What’s crazy here where I live in East Tennessee. That mustang 41k and the golf r 48k.
I mean its a good car you should always Pick the dsg trans
They'll sell every one! It's a cult following....
46k is nothing, autobahn R sold for $68K in Dubai then went down to $54K
Had a Volks R, loved the way it handled. Plus I had it set up with a full stage 2, it was a beast. Dyno said it was putting out 390 Hp
422ft pds of torque, That was in #1 setting, never dyno in #2, but it was quite a bit more power.
Loved that Slow-mo at the beginning of the drag race😍
Mustang 💪
A DSG would have made a world of difference
Speed isnt everything, still rather have the Golf r
Why are you gae?
Its the incognito factor about the Golf R that makes it attractive.
@@krane15 For some, I recognize that.
But there's no way an adult is going back there (even a short petite one) for more than a mile or two. The VW, while not a cavernous rear seat, is capable of adult comfort even on a road trip.
Yeah why not do both manual or both auto.. makes no sense
agree not a fair race they make it sound like the mustang is fastest. Bro if they bring the auto golf r the mustang would loose by 1 second. Also they brought mercedez auto wich is great but also not a fair race bc its the worst germain car out of audi volkswagen and bmw. Standard equipment is a measley 3:23.
Stick track pak gets the 3:73 gears and allows the 5.0 to rev where it needs to be 💥
We need the 7-speed DSG dual clutch Golf R.
Of course. The manual is limited by the ability of the driver.
@@krane15The manual is also just slower no matter who is driving the R compared to the DSG. Same deal with the Mustang and the 10 spd auto vs the 6 spd manual. The individual gears are quite tall in both cars for the manual which is part of the reason.

Oh yeah I have a 6 speed manual and it’s a kick. 1st and 2nd pull like a freight train. Just a few bolt ons and a race tune, and this car is a monster. Auto is nice in traffic and for drag racing but that’s the only advantage IMHO.
Americans don't know how to drive a manual transmission.. every year less and less Americans buy stick .. the wussyfication of the USA is strong. Change the W to a P.

I would be happy having any of these cars cuz they are all a bit of fun and also functional
I would be okay with comparison of mustang v8 manual vs Accord 2T auto (tunned if you can)
Any car buyers looking for a new car probably wont line up a VW Golf, a Benz and a Mustang as a choice. These cars are targeted at different markets. Gotta luv the v8 though. There is no replacement for displacement, no substitute for cubic inches. Sadly, Mustang is the last v8 left in the market now, its all there is, and its days are almost certainly numbered, for now at least. Mustang is a much simpler car technically, service and repair costs will be much higher with the German cars, they are technically more complicated.

you lost me as soon as you guy showed the vw with the manual transmission (REALLY?) , with a DSG the vw should be able to at least make this video interesting to watch , race the two cars with the same transmission (auto or manual) , is that so difficult???
Yes, actually it is.

The DSG Golf R has been timed at 12.5 seconds in the1/4 mile by Motorweek. The tested time here was 16 seconds?
Yes combination of manual and bad driver. BUT trust me the manual, in drag race is a pain not easy at all. Next time, put a better driver in the Golf R. That car is much faster than that…
It wouldn't matter. The manual is only so fast, regardless of how talented the drive is. The many car also has less hp than the automatic. The 2025 are up-to 333hp.

The dominant figure here is Torque. Torque wins, also important that rpm & hp carry it
I understand sometimes you have to work with what you have, but as soon as you mentioned that the Golf was a manual, I knew you guys couldn't be serious about this video.
I don't even think they used launch control on the Mercedes.
You couldn't have said this better. You saved me from writing the paragraph myself 😂

Same price……different ice cream flavors…..great content!
Doesn't the guy driving the Mercedes know how to brake boost?
He clearly doesn't
Actualy he did great its a mercedes thats how it is, there not great in performance. They did great to bring another auto but still not a fair race. In fact in germany they buy audi volkswagen bmw porsche lambo. Alot of german avoid mercedes bc they know its not great in performance its actualy more for class and daily drive.

Less shots of the drivers face driving and more shots of the actual race
Mustang for me, but I don't live in the US, here in rural France, the back roads are narrow so it's the VW or a small Ford!
Try comparing apples to apples guys.
I don't care the performance, it can be the last car, but the sound of the Mustang gives goosebumps; that's enough for me to buy that car, although the interior is questionable. I don't like any electric cars, not even hybrid ones. Thanks for the video.
So fake, the Golf can be way waaay faster than this!
The Mustang GT too.
these newer mustangs really do surprise, all and all neat race, Ty for sharing.

Manuals are going away because most Gen-Z's can't drive them.
Manuals are fun but 90% of people don't know how to race/shift properly in them.
Does the GT Premium have a better interior?
Mustang all day. Especially where I live which is close to sea level and never snows, rarely rains. Anyone who would pass on that Coyote V8 for a nicer interior isn't really a car person in my book.
Coming from the Elantra N, I can't help but love my new s650 Mustang GT. Coming from that Hyundai Ecobox, the interior of my base GT is still a pretty decent upgrade. (far less creaky plastic)

Conventional auto vs DSG should be the comparison, or both manual. Dual clutch and AWD in Golf is something else off the line. DSG variant also gets more torque stock.
There's just something about the sound and feel of a good old-fashioned American V8

More random car races like this. Different than other channels. I dig it.
Golf is what I bought. Manual as well. Love it. Who cares about 1/4 times anyway. These cars are all fun, just get out and drive 'em.
That screen and capacitor buttons in the VW may look nice but they’re way more frustrating than the Ford’s. I’ve lived with both and it’s not comparable. The Golf 8.5 reverts to steering wheel buttons and is meant to improve the software.
Why didn’t you get a DSG? It’s well known it’s faster off the line than the stick. Or the Mustang in a stick.
My take, the Mustang for weekend fun,and the VW for the daily driver family car. The Mercedes while it has a Pretty interior, for some reason doesn't appeal to me enough to spend that much on.
Everyone complaining about manual vs automatic. When the turbo and awd also play a hige factor, especially at that elevation.
All meaningless with a poor driver.
An automatic Golf R might have still lost, but the outcome would likely have been tighter. As for a manual Mustang versus a DSG Golf R, it's hard to determine which would come out on top. Perhaps that match-up might be for another day.
DSG R is almost a full second faster on the quarter mile than the manual.
You guys can do better.
I did not know that 486 was almost 500. Thanks for the useful information.
Great shot, on launch, in slow motion, showing the rear suspension load up
low 4s for the golf seems unlikely as that's the same as an AWD M340i which has 382 horsepower and 369 lb ft of torque. Maybe it weighs more but still not enough to where 315 horsepower and 295 lb ft of torque would allow it to match that acceleration.
They are underrated around 30x at the wheels. Thank you.
