Except this is so variable. My car has a stage 1 tune, and that’s just a raw computer tune to the transmission and the ECU. It goes from 290hp/290ft-lb torque to 365hp/380ft-lb torque. Bolt ons don’t happen until stage 2. The stages not only depend on the tuning company, but also the car itself. Some cars can’t handle the added power and need upgrades. Some can, and can be tuned significantly before needing to upgrade hardware.
I think solely considering engine upgrades. Stage 1: ECU tune only Stage 2: Upgraded intercooler etc with a bit more tuning Stage 3: Upgraded clutch, turbos etc with a tune
A stage 6 air intake is amazing!! I am so going to use that. And other things like "stage 4 wipers" aerodynamic for more speed. Or stage 5 Schrader valve caps. ( the little rubber stems used to fill air in your tires).
The "Stage" nomelclature actually existed before Grand Tourismo, though I'll agree that the game did expand it's usage to the wider audience. The one example I'm super familiar with is the Buick GS/GSX series starting in 1968 through '75 used "Stages" as an upgrade package options. Stage 1 got you the Wildcat 455 cubic inch engine over the Buick 350, dual exhaust over single, and a larger 4 barrel carb, arriving at the 360hp, 510ft/lb torque monster. Stage 2 was a very rare package option that was sold as a dealer option, or to wrench happy individuals and were shipped out in the trunk of the car, and less than 5 Stage 2 GSX packages were actually installed by the factory. High flow heads, high flow intake manifold, custom exhaust porting, a more aggressive camshaft, hollow pushrods for improved lubrication, forged piston heads, a tuned up 4 barrel carb are what's known, but there could have been other race-inclined options included. Their factory example had a much higher rear differential ratio than the usual GS (at 4.78) to help transfer all that torque to the tires, but I don't know if that was a thing that came with the Stage 2 package or not.
Plenty of examples of the civic type R out there making 500+ out of the 2.0 k20c1… now getting that power to the ground in a fwd is a totally different story

I remember when I started learning about cam upgrades for LS3s I remember reading one site that said a stage 1 cam was generally a +30 hp gain and I installed a stage 1 from TX Speed and it gained me about +90 hp.
I hate how they denote everything in stages. That literally tells you nothing. Intake/Exhause duration, lift and lobe seperation are much more helpful. I always see people get the biggest cam they can find only to find out their engine becomes completely unusable on the street and there's not even enough vacuum to work the brake booster.
Well done video. Jeremiah is really coming into his own with these explanation and teaching videos - I think that style fits his personality and dry humor the best.
In Russia it’s simple, stage 1 is just a remap, maybe with some air filter mods, stage 2 is intake and exhaust replacement. Stage 3 starts with replacing your turbo, but the rest of the engine is stock, any modifications to an engine (cams, pistons, etc) considered to be a stage 4.
Hey! Trevor here! Long time fan!! Love the show, I have learned so much from watching all you guys! I’ve been wondering about an episode idea, I don’t know too much about transmissions or gearing, stuff along those lines. I would love to see an episode about things among that category! Thanks guys! Keep it up!
My 2002 Subaru WRX wagon was Stage 2+ using a cobb SF intake/FULL TBE & was Pro-tuned on 93 gas at a performance shop in my area. Going any higher would cause damage to the stock motor/transmission.
Honestly I feel like they sort of are a history show. I've thought about all the various car channels on UA-cam (and elsewhere), and Donut is mostly "how did this car, model, company, way of things in driving and the automobile industry, etc, come to be?" They've sort of diversified from that more recently, but much of their main originals - Bumper2Bumper, Up To Speed, and Wheelhouse - are of this vein. Other popular car channels: MightyCarMods: "What nonsense can we do with this car?" RegularCars: "What does this car mean, in it's time and now, and who is it for?" Top Gear/Grand tour: "How can these cars make 3 old British guys behave like middle schoolers?" Engineering Explained: "How does this car work?"
Finally!! I've been so confused about this for so long. My mind is enlightened. Next need to find a vid to explain how you remove all the panels without visible screws in a car T_T And then how to tell what is what on an engine. And then what fluids needs to come out for any given job T_T
This is interesting because I always thought: Stage 1 = remap Stage 2 = remap with supporting-type parts (cooling, etc.) Stage 3 = more serious power upgrades like turbos, etc. KNOWLEDGE
I usually see stage numbers used most on clutches, which makes a lot sense. You can easily get an idea of how aggressive the clutch it based on its stage number.
Wait I didn't understand something. That chiptuning is also possible on atmospheric engines right? Even if the powergains are less important, we all want more powah. So what exactly is modified in a chiptuning in an atmospheric engine? The throttle body opens even wider? If not, how can the engine inject more fuel to create that tiny extra horsepower? Please petrolfriends, help me understand this
Grand tourismo give the concept "stage", but without standardization But there's a tuning shop that specializes in modifying audi came up with proper standardization for the "stages" to support their tunes and remap , from stage 1 to stage 3+ Then many tuner follow the steps and came up with their stages, but those stages more or less gave the same ways of modifying from basic remaps to upgrading hardware to support the massive power bump
Never understood stages so thanks for the clarification. As a supra owner, we went by bpu, bpu+, apu. Etc. (Basic performance upgrade, advanced performance upgrades)
In the Subaru community we have a pretty widely accepted "stage" system, its mainly just a quick way to sum up what kind of mods we have. But it's unique to each Make, like a stage 2 Subaru WRX isn't necessarily the same as a stage 2 VW GTI.
Thank you for a very nice and simplified explanation. I have had the same questions for a long time: how do you compare different company stages, but now i know everyone markets their own numbers. My only question is: Is it going to be cumbersome on the engine when you upgrade to higher stages? Are there side effects on the engine when you are now pushing the engine harder?
Track racing: proper alignment, play with tire pressure, no oil leaks, rev limiter. All you can do with a production car. Then you step up to a mid engine car... Lotus Elise or build a AC Cobra. Low COG, alignment, tirepressure, rev limiter and then build an engine. Max hp is less important than durability.
I'm building a 2005 Mazda 6 S wagon with 132000 miles. Manual transmission. Got it torn apart now to fix it back to zero. All OEM to get the leaks and squeaks fixed. The body is immaculate aside from a couple small scratches and overall paint decay. I have an engine core to rebuild after I get the thing running. From a 2012 Ford escape 3.0. I'm a Ford and Mazda certified technician. The endgame is street build luxury centrifugal supercharged. Air ride. A/C. Pushing 400hp give or take and running pump gas. I believe I can fly. I reckon I'm gonna try.
I'm doing a daily driver build on my Chevy Trax. It has the 1.4L ecotec turbo. The airbox on these (and the Cruze) is designed to move air UP thru the filter. The factory turbo is built in to the exhaust manifold. I replaced the turbo with a OE equivalent with a billet wheel. High density valve cover and intake manifold. Installed higher temp spark plugs and coil pack. Installed larger intercooler, and cold air intake. My next planned mod is exhaust, I'm going to dual pipe if there is room. All that said, what mod should I do next? I don't want to replace anything inside the engine.
I've always thought of stages like so Stage 1: street upgrades, nothing crazy, no track days Stage 2: street/ track upgrades, for a car you can drive to a track day and drive it home Stage 3: full on racecar stuff
I dare say, most race cars don't use these things. A lot of GT4 class race cars, like the GT4 Mustang, GT4 Camaro, etc., actually don't have a single engine mod... Basically just better brakes, wheels, and slick tyres. Maaaaaaaybe racing coilovers. B-Spec touring cars, for example, use almost entirely unmodified Ford Fiesta (non-ST trim) or MINI Cooper non-D type cars with ~110 WHP in racing spec Spec Miata, basically all unmodified engines... A majority of modern race cars, you don't really have to turn wrenches on them. Remove interior, weld in a cage, bolt in safety equipment and you're done.
Even that's inconsistent though. One tuning company's "Stage 4" is another's "Stage 2". Only thing the stage numbers is good for is to tell the buyer in which order to buy and install the packages.
Do a Past Gas on the Mille Miglia! The thousand mile race on public roads where you can culminate in the legendary 1955 win by Stirling Moss (who just passed this year) who after the 10 hour race, drove through the night with his girlfriend to have breakfast in Munich, then lunch in Stuttgart and dinner in Cologne. Stirling’s teammates were no laughing matter either, Fangio and Kling rode without Navigator/Mechanics and the last teammate, Herrmann the year before saw the railroad gate lower for the express train to Rome, knocked on his passengers helmet to tell him to duck, because the Porshe was so low, went under the gate and ahead of the train in the middle of the race! Stirling also pioneered the little used pace notes at the time with his journalist ride along giving him hand gestures from his scrolling notes machine. Previously, 90% of the winners were Italian and had circuit knowledge and didn’t have notes. You can also talk about how Alfa’s used to win all the time but under Enzo, Ferrari’s started to dominate.
I'd say stages are a measure of the difficulty, to imply labor, cost, and parts package.* *This is understood to not be as compared to other manufacturers only within the same manufacturer.
Not if you're talking about "stages", no. If you have to talk about "stages" to explain the mods done to your vehicle, you shouldn't be peacocking around.
You guys have made me feel old. Thanks a lot! I watched my brother "stage 1" gass flow the head of his 1970's 2 stroke Kawasaki in the mid 80's When video games went beep and were called "pong" 🤣
My opion on stages for standard turbo car: Stage 1: Software only Stage 2: Software, exhaust mod and intake mod. DeCat or Catback, EGR delete Stage 3: Bigger turbo (internals depend on the strength of your engine)
U guys will not believe me yesterday i was talking with my brother that what does these stages mean why people upgrade in stages why not skip stages like from stage 1 to 3 or 4,and i was thinking to search about this topic, but today i got a notification and BOOM my words as itis in this video. ❤️
"stage" mods also vary by car - For example, in a WRX or STi stage 1 is commonly accepted as an aftermarket tune, stage 2 involves a downpipe (high flow cats or catless) and tune. Stage 3 is where it gets wonky though, as it's usually fuel system, turbo and/or intercooler upgrades and a reflash, but it gets pretty "a-la-cart" depending on the individuals goals. CAI & catback can be done whenever as they don't really have an impact on the cars performance (CAI usually has a negative impact though).

poor Nolan...
I remember when I started learning about cam upgrades for LS3s I remember reading one site that said a stage 1 cam was generally a +30 hp gain and I installed a stage 1 from TX Speed and it gained me about +90 hp.
jesus fuck, if only i could do that to my FA20
The "Jerwagon" needs to be a 5 cylinder, for it's torque and it's sweet, sweet sounds!
Thank you! I've been wanting to understand these "stages" for years now.
Fun fact: Donut Media is the only channel with skippable ads that don’t get skipped
And i love them even more for it
@@redhednitemare right??
Love the “Working on GFX” at 5:41 lol. Likely a missed shot, but actually totally works with Donut’s humor and style

"Well this isn't a history show"
Man that hit hard.
Other popular car channels:
MightyCarMods: "What nonsense can we do with this car?"
RegularCars: "What does this car mean, in it's time and now, and who is it for?"
Top Gear/Grand tour: "How can these cars make 3 old British guys behave like middle schoolers?"
Engineering Explained: "How does this car work?"
"but we are not here to talk about the HISTORY of race tuning, oh no, we're here to talk about what it's like to own a tuned car!"
I love the effort they put into their sponsored ads. Shows their creativity and the relationships they have with people that help the income!
Finally!! I've been so confused about this for so long. My mind is enlightened.
Next need to find a vid to explain how you remove all the panels without visible screws in a car T_T
And then how to tell what is what on an engine.
And then what fluids needs to come out for any given job T_T
This is interesting because I always thought:
Stage 1 = remap
Stage 2 = remap with supporting-type parts (cooling, etc.)
Stage 3 = more serious power upgrades like turbos, etc.
KNOWLEDGE
Finally i learnt more from this video than my Mechanics course in this semester
it’s what Germany tried to do in the 1940s…
I usually see stage numbers used most on clutches, which makes a lot sense. You can easily get an idea of how aggressive the clutch it based on its stage number.
In Belgium it's like this.
- Stage 1: ECU Tune
- Stage 2: ECU Tune, Intercooler, Exhaust, Downpipe, (Kw) Air filter
- Stage 3: ECU Tune, Hybrid Turbo, injectors, intake manifold, hp pump, and more
Jeremiah has come a long way presenting since his start at Donut, love to see it!
Seriously, those first few episodes were ROUGH but he has definitely gotten his own style and is in the groove.
Stage 5: **DANGER TO MANIFOLD**
Jeremiah: "200hp, 200ft/lbs, rwd"
me: "sounds like my stock Z31"
Jeremiah: " *JERVAGEN* "

Wait I didn't understand something. That chiptuning is also possible on atmospheric engines right? Even if the powergains are less important, we all want more powah. So what exactly is modified in a chiptuning in an atmospheric engine? The throttle body opens even wider? If not, how can the engine inject more fuel to create that tiny extra horsepower? Please petrolfriends, help me understand this
Ignition timing, AFR target, VVT cam timing,

Grand tourismo give the concept "stage", but without standardization
But there's a tuning shop that specializes in modifying audi came up with proper standardization for the "stages" to support their tunes and remap , from stage 1 to stage 3+
Then many tuner follow the steps and came up with their stages, but those stages more or less gave the same ways of modifying from basic remaps to upgrading hardware to support the massive power bump
Honestly to me I love the way it sounds when you have a stage 3 racing clutch in your shitbox lol

STAGES: mean absolutely nothing. keep watching fast n furious.
Nice name and profile pic. Just finished the book today. Still have alot of questions tho lol
@@helaasonbekend4137 it just so happens to be the year we live in!
nah fam, subaru guys started this stage nonsense
yeah stages only apply to certain parts from certain manufacturers but to say a car is a "stage 1" build is just dumb.
Stage is just part tolerance actually
It actually stands for what season you’re on in Initial D
Final stage let's go boys
2:42 ... Buick used Stage 1 2 & 3 "language" in the 1960's and 70's
Very good video. Thank you all! Jerry and the editing team. Big win on this one.
in Brazil this "stage" is more popular, and ever more spek, great video.
Thank you for a very nice and simplified explanation. I have had the same questions for a long time: how do you compare different company stages, but now i know everyone markets their own numbers. My only question is: Is it going to be cumbersome on the engine when you upgrade to higher stages? Are there side effects on the engine when you are now pushing the engine harder?
you'll lower engine life expectancy and possibly have to rebuild it with reinforced parts
Day one of asking for speeding ticket stories

Go watch VinWiki bruh
It would be cool to hear the Donut team’s personal stories, maybe they can be featured on vinwiki
Thats why I love vinwiki. I wanna hear how badly they've been caught and what they do in their personal lives
This was actually well done, unironically.
Great job, Donut.
You guys should make a history video on Gran Turismo. And while you’re at it, do one on the NFS Franchise as well. Two Good ideas for Up to Speed.
I would lowkey drive The Donut Jerwagen

"This isn't even my final stage"
i always thought people who say "stage x" just learned how to drive manual in forza.
ok but actually i learned on a sim on forza and translated fluently to a an actual car
I've always thought of stages like so
Stage 1: street upgrades, nothing crazy, no track days
Stage 2: street/ track upgrades, for a car you can drive to a track day and drive it home
Stage 3: full on racecar stuff
I dare say, most race cars don't use these things. A lot of GT4 class race cars, like the GT4 Mustang, GT4 Camaro, etc., actually don't have a single engine mod... Basically just better brakes, wheels, and slick tyres. Maaaaaaaybe racing coilovers.
B-Spec touring cars, for example, use almost entirely unmodified Ford Fiesta (non-ST trim) or MINI Cooper non-D type cars with ~110 WHP in racing spec
Spec Miata, basically all unmodified engines...
A majority of modern race cars, you don't really have to turn wrenches on them. Remove interior, weld in a cage, bolt in safety equipment and you're done.
What in reality they are, "reality can be whatever I want it to be"
Even that's inconsistent though.
One tuning company's "Stage 4" is another's "Stage 2".
Only thing the stage numbers is good for is to tell the buyer in which order to buy and install the packages.
I am sure he said "brumper to brumper" At the start....
Brumper to brumper is what I do to my cousin

I'd say stages are a measure of the difficulty, to imply labor, cost, and parts package.*
*This is understood to not be as compared to other manufacturers only within the same manufacturer.

Not if you're talking about "stages", no. If you have to talk about "stages" to explain the mods done to your vehicle, you shouldn't be peacocking around.

I watched my brother "stage 1" gass flow the head of his 1970's 2 stroke Kawasaki in the mid 80's

seemed like they were nice times tbh, i was born in 95 so gran turismo 1 was not smth that I knew existed untill now
My opion on stages for standard turbo car:
Stage 1: Software only
Stage 2: Software, exhaust mod and intake mod. DeCat or Catback, EGR delete
Stage 3: Bigger turbo (internals depend on the strength of your engine)
U guys will not believe me yesterday i was talking with my brother that what does these stages mean why people upgrade in stages why not skip stages like from stage 1 to 3 or 4,and i was thinking to search about this topic, but today i got a notification and BOOM
my words as itis in this video. ❤️
For my car, I saw water pump kits advertised as stages depending on how complete the kit was. I don't think any of them added power sadly
What he said: "Woo-Wee!"
What UA-cam Captions thinks he said: "Who are we?"
The whole "Stage" thing annoys me. You mod and tune your car as far as you want, job done.
At this point my projet must be around stage 30.6 or summ
It's just to help understand how many mods a car has or to what extents a car is modded. No one said you have to have stage 5 mods on your car
What Stage you on brah??
Bumper to bumper was originally about cool random cars and now it’s basically the new science garage
