FINAL THOUGHTS
The Sony A7 IV is a fantastic camera. Low light is great unless you need to film over 10,000 ISO, the 7K oversampling to 4K gives you a ton of detail and you save $1,000 over buying an A7S III.
The only reasons I would recommend getting an A7s III over an A7 IV would be:
1. No crop at 4K 60p
2. 4K at 120p
3. HD at 240p
4. Better EVF and display
5. Better rolling shutter performance
6. Raw video over HDMI

You said a7S IV in the intro and edited it out, didn't you? 😜💜
Yes 🤫
Yep! Figured the sloppy edit was better than the comments I would have received. Thanks for turning in brotha!
@@dslrvideoshooter You Just got undone LOL Of course he noticed. I didn't catch it
I totally didn’t notice it but now that Gerald said something this is totally hilarious 😂. I love your guys friendship it’s inspiring !
You were hearing headphones when watching the video, didn’t you? 😁🙌
I didn't expect that level of detail in the sensor of the IV to let it overcome so much. Excellent comparison, hit everything I had questions about!
Not all heroes wear capes! Thanks for this detailed comparison, Caleb! 🙌🏼
Ha! Thank you so much Luke!
Granted Caleb's sweater in this one kinda looks like a gnarly cape. 😆
What a fantastic video!
So nicely done Caleb!
Thank you so much boss! Much appreciate my man.
Finally, a truly unbiased comparison of specs and general performance! So tired of seeing people who clearly favor one over the other do a "comparison". They are both great cameras and each have their pros and cons relative to what the user needs.
Seriously Caleb, you honestly have been such an amazing resource to me over the years. Yet another fantastic review/comparison.
Such an insane upgrade over the A7III though! I'm just happy it has 10 bit
but no 4k60 uncropped. wtf. it's 2022
@@jjseandxcefree You don’t really need 60fps that much unless your trying to slow your footage down a bit.
@@ezrarichardson279 eh not true. I now shoot all my main channel videos at 4k50p so that means I could never use an A7Iv as an A cam
@@evan Yes, you could. Just back up the camera to alleviate the crop if possible.
Secondly out of curiosity, what is your crucial need for 4k 50p? Even if you're editing 4K and outputting 1080 the A7IVs downsampled 7k will result in an excellent image.
Yes! That is all I wanted to see. Would have lost it if we still had to deal with 8-bit.
I really love the S35 crop on the a7iv. I assigned the rear joystick button press to crop in and it’s turned every lens into 2 lenses with a click.
This is an amazing idea. I’m doing it now!
So true, perfect example for the 24mm 1.4 GM, beast of a lense!! Just crop it with apc35 und you get the 35mm with 1.4f! It's an insane money saver :)
Yes! Really missed that on the A7S III.
@@tombuck I have this set on my a7c, but of course you can only do this on my a7siii in 1080p. Great option Boom!
@@LzKicker17 Yep I do this on my a7c all the time......Love my dang 24mm 1.4 GM
Caleb, my bro! This is hands down the best and most nicely presented comparison between these cameras! Amazing!
Such a great detailed, but concise comparison - really enjoyed this, Caleb! Nice one! 👌
To the point, short and sweet. Well done!
Thanks Caleb.
Amazing amount of detail. Thanks a lot mate.
The detail difference is mind blowing! Also the fact that you can customize that exposure comp dial is amazing. ALSO as someone who uses little hdmi to usb boxes for webcams constantly having it built in is amazing. I think the a7IV is the one for me! Didn’t realize the low light was so good on it!
Well hes just wrong about that idk. I literally plugged my fx3 (same thing as a7s3) into my computer yesterday via usbc and sony imaging edge software and it worked first time as a webcam. No hassle no fuss.
So not sure why he thinks you cant do that or need a hdmi to usb capture card. You dont.
Lmfao. Detail difference is not mind blowing at all. Look at the images side by side when it isn't cropped 400%. They are the same.
THE VIDEO WE'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR
u da goat
The best video review I’ve watched about this two cameras, what a video, thank you! 🙌🏽
Caleb's LUT pack for the FX3/A7siii is one of the most slept on imo. It gives you such an amazing starting point with accurate skin tones to develop a creative look for your footage, AND it costs 10x less than many of its competitors on the market.
Thank you so much for the plug! After getting hundreds of messages about the price being to low I finally listened and increased the price. Never thought I would get that kind of feedback ha!
Rushed to buy it lol!
Does it work for the FX6 too?
I watched this last night and then again today and I just went to "like" it for a second time. This is a wonderfully efficient video. Thank you for the chart at the end.
really enjoyed this, Caleb. Thanks for making this simple to understand!
This is the best comparison video I've ever watched!
I have both and both are incredible cameras. Great comparison Caleb!
I’m in illinois as well. Glad to see someone from the area doing big things. Much love. And this was a grea comparison vid. Thanks
I dont know so much about cameras but still watch your videos, highly impressed and appreciate your content!
Probably one of the best comparison videos I've ever seen.
Quick and concise, great comparison video. Thank you Caleb,
Another great review! I can attest as well to your extremely informative and thorough camera tutorials. I purchased your Sony A7III tutorial and you got me up and running with a full understanding of Sony's menu system. I came over from Canon, so very helpful!
What a fantastic breakdown as always! Thank you!
I found the comparison of the two cameras when zooming in on the video recording + the photo quality with increasing ISO to be the best part of this test. Also the list of video settings of both cameras. A REALLY GOOD AND USEFUL COMPARISON.
I know a lot of people hate sensor crop, and it is a bummer to have one at 4k60, but I LOVE that you can enable super 35 at anytime. When doing close up b-roll it is so nice to be able to crop if you need it and I use sensor cropping as extra zoom all the time.
So its the A74 for you?
@@jaycarl1562 I did buy the a7iV and personally I love having the sensor crop option. I have run into it a few times that it is a bummer at 4k60, but personally I have used it to give me some extra crop on my lens almost every video I film. I am primarily using a 28-70 sigma, so that super 35 mode helps me get it more to the 105mm which I like because I used to film almost exclusively on a 28-105.
Fellow Illinoisan here! I'm glad I have found your channel. I love the format and simplicity of the tests and comparisons of both cameras. Thanks Caleb! #subscribed
Thank you this was so helpful especially the summary at the end!
Man, you just nail it! Just get better as the time goes by... I´m a great admirer of yours from Rio- Brazil!
Just the video I needed, awesome stuff Caleb!
Great Info as always Caleb, I would love a detailed audio comparison ( features, preamps, ect ) for all of us audio guys out here.
Awesome, as usual. Thank you for your concise yet comprehensive assessments, Caleb! You've greatly enhanced my understanding of this art and science.
Really love the last " what you'd get for a 1000$ more " . So effective imo. I would personally invest in lenses more than having 120fps or 4k uncropped etc ... being more photo than videos anyway . Again great comparison
also the 1080 120p over sample on the A7IV for me looks great if I really need 120 uncropped which I rarely do. and I did the same spent the money of lenses instead.
Excellent vid. Covering what video shooters need to know.
This is the best comparison between those two cameras. Helped me a lot to make a decision. Thanks a lot, mate! New subscriber here...
Thanks a lot for the comparison. Will you make a guide video for A7iv as well?
Yes! It is in the works...
@@dslrvideoshooter Brilliant! Can't wait :D
This is an outstanding video. Thank you, Caleb!
Great job Caleb! Super concise. That was a very informative 10 minutes :-)
Your comparsion is excellent! Thanks a lot for all these Details!
such clear charts to show the differences, thanks man
This was the review I needed. Thanks Caleb.
Great Video I already have the A7 IV and do not plan on switching but just find it interesting to learn how different cameras compare. Thank you for this to the point comparison.
Caleb…I love your videos. My UA-cam studio is based on your “studio on a stand” episode. Thanks for your excellent channel!
Awesome stuff! Thanks Caleb!
This is the best comparison video I’ve seen for these cameras
Amazing comparison! Huge thanks!
DANG ! timing on point Caleb, I was literally looking for the differences between this exact models like 5 minutes ago and then your video popped up, hahaha great video and timing my friend !
Glad I could be of service! Thank you for the kind words man!
What an excellent comparison! Thank you for this.
Wow - super clear review & comparison. You helped me where I was lost between the 2 models! Thanks !
@@DSLRvideoshooter.... Not sure what I'm expected to do :-) (but happy new year to you too!)
Two huge things no one ever seems to mention regarding the a7IV video that Im glad you did. In 4K 24 and 30, its oversampled from 7K,. The a7S III comes nowhere close to that resolution as it can only do around 4.2K. Also, the crop on the a7IV 4K 60 is no big deal. Most every cinema camera from ARRI, RED, as well as the Sony and Canon cinema cameras, have sensors around the same size as that (APS-C) crop in 4K 60 on the a7IV. I chose the a7IV. Its $1k cheaper, its a TON better for photo, has a better AF system, separate photo and video settings, 7K resolution video and I dont need 240fps. Its pretty much the perfect camera IMO.
Resolution doesn't matter. People love to crop in 400% to show you a minor difference. But where in cinema are you cropping in 400%? The uncropped images side by side look the exact same. The terrible rolling shutter makes the Sony a7IV a no go for me.
Sony people when Canon's old cameras have a video crop: OMG! Canon is crippling their cameras!
Sony people in 2022 when Sony cameras have a video crop: OMG! It's a huge bonus! Cinema cameras have this feature!
The perfect hot camera. MP chasers man I tell ya. A7iv is a mass market camera. Siii is a specialty camera.
1000/10 review. Thank you for being clear, concise and making what could be pretty technical aspects EASYYY to understand!
Extremely detailed comparison, thank you very much!
Wow, this is the best comparison! Thank you!
Awesome and informative video Caleb!!
Nice breakdown Caleb! I really liked those fancy charts and graphics!
THANK YOU! You're a legend, Caleb.
Excellent Caleb! Best A7IV vs A7S3 video on UA-cam letting us know everything we need to know to make a purchase decision. Your video helped me to decide going with the A7IV. Thank you my friend!!!
Awesome comparison video! Thanks!
Thanks a lot for that great job comparing those 2 cameras !
An excellent video. Just the right speed. Comes straight to the point.
best comparison on the planet for video capabilities, solved my all questions.
Thank you! I needed this
This video was worth $1,000! Thanks Caleb!
Very in detail! Even I got both, I don’t know some of the difference!! Huge like your video!!
Wow that is the best research, i am amazed and you simplify so profesionally. Thank you so much sir.
Great video. Nice work and expertly delivered.
Great video! Just got my A7IV last week. Good choice, I think. :) Looking forward to seeing about your A7IV guide!!
Love how you kept the bias out of this. Great video!
Nice Caleb, as a new a7iv owner I appreciate this video and look forward to your finished course.
thank you so much! love that ISO comparison!
Detailed as always
Thanks Laiqul!
Absolute best comparison video between these two cameras
Great one as always Caleb
Going mirrorless from a Nikon DSLR no-investment setup. Going to start video-ing (no experience at all). Found your Oct 2019 desktop DIY setup-THANK YOU! Have decided to purchase the A7 IV (yeah, again, no Sony experience) but experts seem to like it as a hybrid and mid-cost camera. I think you like it too from what I think I heard in the last 10 seconds. I think I'll look for a 24-70mm 3rd party zoom but I noticed how the 16mm worked for you in the desktop video I referred to above, so maybe I need more input on the lens. Anyway, overall it is a struggle without video experience to figure it all out, and I just want to let you know you are appreciated for sharing what you do so well! ⭐x5
I have been waiting for this.
Great Video! Thanks Caleb
Can you please talk about, or anyone for that matter to encourage Sony to put integral raw like R5 and R5c, or come out with a firmware update for Integral law light for A7sIII. this one thing will put Sony ahead, its surprising that FX6 and FX9 don't have internal raw.
All the years I've been watching you, I've never know you were in Chicago! So cool.
Focus peaking in auto mode is kinda what I really wanted with the a7s3, cool feature, I hope a future firmwire will have some of these settings for the s3... especially breathing comp
They just put out a fx6 update that has this so I'm hopeful for a fx3/SIII firmware update as well.
@@jordanlaine7412 Ohhh, that would be great!! (about time xD)
Another great video, Thx! I own both cameras and I purchased your a7SIII video guide which is great! I can’t wait to see your a7IV video guide. Will you add the XLR-K3M setup guide?
Great video, informative graphs
Great video, as always! 🙏 Would love to see a A7SIII vs FX3 video.
Gerald undone has one explaining how the fx3 is basically a riggable siii check it out
Great comparison! I have both also, and noticed battery life is better on the A7SIII. Another odd change was when customizing buttons, the A7 IV doesn't have the an option to choose memory recall so it's not as easy get to the extra 4 custom memory modes. I hope they add that back in a future update.
Which do you suggest image wise for video if you only use natural light
You just saved me one of the biggest frustrations with the A7iv, I got so use to the IR Remote control function on the A7S3. Glad to know at least Bluetooth is an option on the A7iv
Where can you find the bluetooth remote? I checked amazon but can't find it.
Excellent review!!! Bravo! 👏👏👏
Always top-notch videos.
Thanks so much for this! Much appreciated. Any chance you're going to do a guide for the A7 IV?
Simple and straightforward
Fourth video I seen in a row that compares these two cameras without talking about the megapixel difference.
Best Comparison video out there!
Thanks for such a fantastic video. I own the A7 IV for about 2 months now and you’ve showed me features that I didn’t know exist on my camera.
Incredible video. Thank you.
I only recently realized that the a7IV doesn’t have an IR sensor for the little Sony remote. That’s the biggest bummer for me since I love using it!
Yeah so sad and so expensive now!
Ya I have this $8 knock off IR remote that works well. They make a bluetooth one as well for $29 so more expensive but not crazy.
@@dslrvideoshooter it wasn’t until I went to film a video with the a7S3 and FX3 that I noticed the a7IV wasn’t recording after pushing the remote 🤦🏻♂️
The rolling shutter really isn’t a big deal on the 7iv. I can’t really see it being an issue except for in specific use cases. Which in those cases, like filming races or birds flying or something like that, just switch over to aps-c mode and get the improvement. It’s still being downsampled from 4.6k to 4k so it’s gonna look fantastic no matter how you shoot with it.
u helped me decide on my next camera! thanks
i just checkout a7iv today , hope it will be a significant upgrade from a6400 :D
Great breakdown!
WHO told you I NEEDED THIS?!! ✊🏾
