AWESOME Video, Jason! Main thing I wanted to know is if settings in Video and Photo mode were Independent or Dependent on each other and you were the only one that answered or at least answered it properly! And also only one to provide detailed views on how that is done (and that's a pretty cool new feature to let the user decide which ones can be independent or not). Thanks again for this very informative and detailed video!
I love the focus mapping, that is really intuitive; breathing comp, active stabilization and the faster eye/animal CAF and tracking are also really huge innovations and upgrades.
I think the upgrade from 3 to 4 only makes sense for video shooters. All major updates like better stabilisation, anti focus breathing, 4k60, no record limit etc. are in fact just video options. The 3 rocks good enough in photography and if it's not professional enough for you, the 4 won't be either.
As an A5100 shooter I feel a bit like a bum here, but I see the A7iv vs iii benefits in photo: 33m px sensor - better AF - electronic shutter - 3,68m px EVF - better ergo & UI - anti-dust shutter - LC RAW - unlimited burst for action
Walked into Best Buy earlier to get an open box A7 iii, the rep showed me the flippy screen on the A7 iiii and I was like “Whoa!” Went straight to your video to see your review. Thank you for being so descriptive and in-depth. You helped immensely.
I believe the battery grip now fits all current bodies, A7IV,, A7RIV, A7SIII, A9II, and A1. Also with A7IV you can crop anywhere within a photo and save it in-camera.
As someone leaning more and more to video, the A7III has been fun, but the A7SIII with all framerates in FF and the fastest most minimal rolling shutter CMOS and dual native ISO is just hard to beat. A7IV is a super powerful photo video camera that seems more 60/40 rather than 50/50 I kind of wish Sony didn’t make it 33mp but kept 24mp or made 28mp if that meant the 4K60p would not have to crop to APS-C (Super35). And would keep rolling shutter a bit more in check. Those 2 factors are too critical for video to compromise on. And I’m actually okay with shooting stills at 12mp. Just nail the composition and never crop. And if some high end job would come along, I’ll rent an A7R series if the client requires super large files. But usually clients complain files of 24mp are too big for social media… so yeah.
Can't fault your logic, it expresses exactly how I feel about this new camera. Sony decided to listen more to the wallet rather than what users really needed, although don't get me wrong, it's a great camera overall but such a shame for the cropped 4k 60 🤦🏻♂️
I do stills with a7S3 too - 12mp compressed RAW is great & easier to handle/store, yes 24mp would of been better for videography but Sony probably wanted to improve on both fronts & that they did. Curious to see a7Cii as well as a7S4 (19mp from fx9?)
@@mirrorlessny storage is a good point although since I bought a Qnap Nas I didn't experience any more issues with space. I'm curios too about the A7C mark ii, still think that A7siii is the best compromise between cost and potential of production level. I guess I'll go with A7IV as my first FF camera. Event it's almost 2 times more expensive then A7III in my 2nd world coutry. The only thing I'm missing here are anamorphic modes, especially one that reads full sensor as 3:2 ... that would make this ideal camera.
Jason, this is the best review that every other YT-er should have made.. they all just talk about 100fps and the crop at 4k60p.. this is going to be a very very worthy upgrade from the A7-III imo
This was the video that tipped me towards upgrading, lol. I wasn't going to, because I'm mostly a photographer, but I've loved my a7III so I'm sure I'll only love my a7IV even more. I know I'll have to wait a while to get it, but I'm hoping it will be worth the wait :)
When you upgrade, kindly pass down the A7 III to me. I badly need a good camera for vlogging and I can't afford one now. You will have helped me forever. Thanks in advance
Oh boy... As a hobbiest, mostly photographer as well, I was surely NOT going to purchase the A7IV.. but GAS is too strong.. I'm selling my A7III along with all of my old Canon gear and that should get pretty close to the price of the A7IV.
I believe the biggest upgrade for me is the autofocus accuracy and speed. Literally every comparison review is showcasing how much better the A7 IV is compared to the III. I am still using the III as the V is just around the corner.
good review. the only things i care about and like better are the shutter dust protector, improved color science, higher MP, and new menu. the only thing i don't like about the new a7iv is it's noisier compared to the a7iii.
@@WillStinton No way upgrade this new camera because sony gives 5fps for uncompressed and loseless compressed raw. TERRIBLE!! TERRIBLE ROLLING SHUTTER, Lcd Resolution still worse. Thanks for the video, I’ve been trying to decide between the Sony a7c and Sony a7 iii and Sony A74 for film making. Which Sony camera Do you think that would be a great camera for Film making?
I’m glad I picked up an a7riiia a few months ago, on sale for $2,300 bucks. I wasn’t too impressed with the rumor specs and needed a 2nd body for my photo work. I can’t believe they added a 1.5x crop to 4K 60p recording. It’s so frigg’n stupid. I really don’t know who this camera is supposed to be for at this price point. The rear LCD is still garbage compared to the refreshed a7r series’s bodies and the A1 and a7siii. If you want this camera for video work, you’re honestly better off saving an extra $1,000 and buying an a7siii
@@OrthoGothChristian Just because it doesn't have everything You need doesn't mean it won't satisfy so many other people. And to just say "save up $1000" more is ridiculous.
FX3 user here, I love the flexible exposure but not so that I can automate only one of the variables I like it so that I can only turn up and down manually the ISO. I find that I accidentally bump or change the shutter speed or aperture when I don't use it.
So… high-ISO video is noisier than a7iii… shown in your previous video (and also in Gordon Laing’s vid). Also, Gordon Laing’s video showed the video resolution/detail is same and no improvement over a7iii. That’s unfortunate (esp with the $500 increase)… IQ matters more than all these new features… it’s the only thing other people see after all. Features only matter to the photographer/videographer… not your viewers or other people.
So if image quality is the same on 2 cameras, the camera with much more features should be free and so both cameras should cost the same? So Sony should sell their cameras at a loss now? lol. come on
So they increased the sensor resolution without sacrificing video quality and adding 10-bit colour, and this is a bad thing? It's honestly ridiculous, all of you people complaining seem to want this camera to cost $4000

Hi Jason, I think you can revisit this and make a new video out of the title with the A7IV and all the new lenses. Make sure you include lenses that works for both photographers and videographers as the A7IV is a hybrid beast. Good luck!
@@mirrorlessny It absolutely is. I have one. I also have the Canon 5D2 and i thought that was incredible - and it was IF and only IF you know how to use it well. #35: 10fps is only possible with Compressed RAW. do you think they will release a firmware update to increase/fix this? otherwise, who wants to shoot 5-6fps? am I missing something??
For wildlife and sports, sure. But if you can't shoot a portrait or something with 6fps the camera isn't the problem. And the lossy compressed RAW shows less of a difference to lossless compressed the higher your ISO is. So just shoot lossy compressed RAW if you need the speed and get 10fps.
My current A6300 can also do 10fps, and I think I have used this feature about once per year, so I take the increase in megapixel over an increase in FPS anytime.
Just the vastly improved focusing alone is a great upgrade. But i love that finally there is a fully functional touch screen. I also really like that when you switch to video it has a video menu. And in stills its a stills menu. Also the new lossless raw. And no video record limit. And the flip screen and ergernomics. Great buffer if using the best card. And 33mp is a perfect sweet spot. Seems like a great camera. But i see people whining that it won't shoot uncompressed raw at 10fps. Or full frame 4k60p. There's always something people are unhappy about. Personally for what i do I'm still happy with my A7r lll. But if i was looking for a new camera i would be very happy with the A74.
Great video! Sounds like iv really is the way to go. I have no idea why someone was trying to get me to buy the iii instead.. Sometimes I think people just don’t want you to have nice things
I’m new to this so I’m just checking - do people really bother with the filters and effects thing??? Or is it just for reference before you edit in software? Also is the face softening pretty throw away? I’m thinking maybe low setting during live stream but maybe not

5-6 fps is enough for wedding, portrait and landscape photographers. I agree it's low for wildlife and sports.
That's what I wanted to see! Order placed.
These are the things I was really, really curious about. thanks
Nice to see a packed feature list of the new sony A7 iv..... 👍
Speaking of transfers... do you know if the camera supports wireless tethering like the A7RIV does?
A whole new level!
The price is increased but it's normal
Much needed video for the new camera! Does UHS-I sd cards still works for photos/video except for the highest recording bitrate on the A7IV?
Yes Jacky, UHS 1 SD will work for photos and videos in both card lots. 👍
Excellent thanks 🙏 I just bought 7iv after your advice cheers mate👏
Great video! Sounds like iv really is the way to go. I have no idea why someone was trying to get me to buy the iii instead.. Sometimes I think people just don’t want you to have nice things
I’m new to this so I’m just checking - do people really bother with the filters and effects thing??? Or is it just for reference before you edit in software? Also is the face softening pretty throw away? I’m thinking maybe low setting during live stream but maybe not
How much better is the A7IV when shooting video of products and panning and tilting on them while maintaining focus?
It can’t be better than this video!!! Thanks 🙏
