This was the most I've ever learned about a camera in a single video. Well done man.
Marques Brownlee time to replace your eos R? ;)
WOAAAAH. MKBHD support
That's a fact
I guess MKBHD has been using a black matte version of this camera for the past couple of weeks...
You’ve been missing out Gerald’s been undoing it for a while now!
Anyone else watching this instead of the actual announcement? 😂 Thank you Gerald for the killer breakdown!!!
I feel like I'm committing a crime!
Yep first here straight away loooom
What announcement?
I watched the b&h review yesterday
Same ;)
This was the A7Siii of A7Siii Reviews.
Gerald is a legend.
Everytime you said "i can make a whole video about that if you like" i was like Yes Please
Agreed. I have my A7 iii replacement in order and can’t wait to receive the S iii in October! Definitely interested in all the follow up vids you mentioned!
Me too!
Now this time Sony choose the right tester for their new camera.
Sony needs no help but Gerald makes it happen..Sony,the one and only, kicks the rest of them back into the basement...

Ok man I understand 🙄
Gerald never done but You definitely helping to done Gerald 😝
Yes they did!!!
Peter made me disappointed when he did for canon
Who needs dxomark when we have Gerald Undone. Extensive dynamic range tests on day 1. Great work.
Everyone who considers two opinions are better than one. Because when you want to make a choice, it takes two items.
Then... if you can make a choice between a single thing, you're getting close to the event horizon. 😉
From experience (and I've been through 7 totally different jobs, aside from less-serious and non-lasting ones), I know several opinions and advice are better when it comes to helping me make choices.
Sure, they have to be pertinent. But remember when DxO started, barely anyone was able to rank and judge sensors. We even hardly would know what dynamic range actually meant. And we were stuck, left to believe what manufaturers would print in their brochures. That was golden age, when they would print whatever would come to their minds during some briefing with 50% salesmen + 50% marketing gurus... free from specifications from film-makers, free at last, they could lie to their hearts content. Lie to us, that is.
OK, DxO rankings are not perfect. But without them, we'd still live in the dark ages of sensor-dictatorship. Amnesia truly is a dangerous weapon, and sometimes it shoots backwards !
#facts
Informative and compelling.
DXOMARK still EXISTS???

Oh Yoda
This is the only A7SIII video anyone needs to see! So complete!
Exceptionally done... just like the camera.
This is exceptionally well done ....or rather undone ..... This is when UA-cam is at its best!
Hands down!

What a legend. You make the best camera reviews on UA-cam, hands down.
I don't need yet another camera, and I don't have any Sony lenses, but this was a fascinating watch - excellent review, Gerald!
Hey dude, I Want to get a camera for youtubing, streaming, and vlogging. What would you reccommend? The sony zv1 doesnt have the wide angle view and was wondering what I can get that would be really good?
@@fightsandfinance7570 If you dont need good AF, I'd go lumix mft, if you do, sony a6 series
@@orphanuprising wats af best for? I heard if a camera doesn't have good af it's useless. I know the Sonys are best there but I just love the gh5 looks and how it can do video. Panasonic looks the most authentic
@@fightsandfinance7570 Hey Fights! Just want to throw my two-cents in here.
I personally feel the Sony A6000 series is a great way to get into vlogging and streaming. You can get an A6000 for pretty cheap along with a Sigma 16mm F1.4 lens for around $800 (prices may vary in your area). Along with the Sony Webcam utility, you don't even need a capture card for streaming (though it would be a good idea to get one), you just need a USB cable to connect the camera to your computer.
If you want some decent, but not the best, in-body image stabilization, you can pick up either an A6500 or A6600 for around $1200-$1500 depending on lenses and the area you're in.
However, it is worth noting that there are MANY cameras that will serve you well as you start off, regardless of your platform. I would just stay away from cheapo DSLR's (low-end Nikon, Canons and the like.) You can even look at older bodies like the Panasonic GH4 or G85 to get you started. Just do your research and see which features are valuable to you.
Hope this helps!
Everyone needs this camera 🤣
When Gerald undone is even more detailed than the actual sony announcement
That comes as absolutely no surprise!
Canon has Peter with: "PhHWhuat's up"
Sony has Gerald with a technical breakdown of the camera down to the arrangement of the quarks inside the protons.
I take this kind of launch ANY day!
LOL! perfect description of the dif in attitudes!
@@Davitor1 You can cook eggs on R5, that's for sure with S3 you can record long videos :)

WOW Gerald! When making a big decision about possibly switching to new gear, we can’t imagine more useful info packed into a single video that you just provided. Thanks so much!

Since this camera will most probably become the industry workhorse for upcoming years -- yes, please, a separate video on exposing and post workflow would be much appreciated.
This was probably the best review of any product I've seen on UA-cam.

yea definitely in the top & love the timeline breakup
I'm really with you on this observation. I'm frankly a bit floored by how good and tight the knowledge in this video is!

Gerald, seriously you and Josh kill it. Balanced, lab test facts & practical applications and examples mean the world to production creators. Not having the resources to make mistakes to ‘learn by’, many of us draw on your expertise and non-fanboy allegiance to make huge financial decisions regarding the directions for glass and supportive kit, which a camera decision will drive. Thanks so very much for your dedication & craft!
BTW... would LOVE to see a whole video about workflow and colour grading with the a7Siii! Love your work, the detail, and the clarity of your explanations. Spot on, and MUCH appreciated!

Dude...You get my "easy for you to say" award. Pro epic breakdown with no fluff or drama. simple.informative.enjoyable...and long...but didn't feel like it. Very nice indeed.

Well done Sony. Legit tech.
In the same boat! Been a Panasonic shooter for a few years now...but it is very hard to ignore this at $1000 less than the S1H!
that's quiet an entrance into a system
Perfect Camera? What? What do we do now? Actually MAKE VIDEOS?
I saw someone on reddit complain that it didn't do RAW internally, because vloggers need it. People will never be happy!
What to do? Complain about the missing 25 fps.
Isn’t it a problem with flickering: interference with the 50Hz lights when shooting 30 or 60 fps?
@@guidoscholz7111Switch to PAL. you could get 25 fps and 50fps
That hit hard :(
Best review I’ve seen out of all the ones I’ve seen on this camera and I’m a Sony Ambassador in Dubai. Great work man and I will be using your video as a reference.
Gerald is king 👑
What lens would you reccomend for this camera for a vlogger who wants to have one run and run lens, needs something that has more bokeh than an f4 and does has some kind of zoom range and wants to use active stabilization
if you need zoom vlog lens with f2.8 then I think Tamron 17-28 is best choice

It's always inspiring to see thorough work made by competent, motivated, and humorous experts like you. Congratulations, Gerald.

After hearing your "just set the speed to 75%" advice, I can now re-listen and digest important parts - your videos are jam-packed with well-articulated good stuff - too important to miss. Thanks so much.
You've become a master of the technical camera review, Gerald. I can only imagine the hours of hard work on this review alone. Very well done. Bravo.

This video is like wow...i took 2 days to complete it ...rewind it..see it again....hats off to you Gerald..Superb explanation.
First source for me. Thanks for the unbiased review and details.
Nice testing Gerald, I also wondered about dual native ISO and specifically asked Sony about this, but they claimed it wasn't. I'll recheck my ISO sweep...
I think it's raw noise reduction at that ISO.
Wow, what an amazing and worthy camera, and what a beautiful review, rich in feature details and nice comparisons with previous models, and so dense and specific that it really stays interesting.
I'm really blown away by that tracking, battery life, obviously the amazing, amazing video features and thoughtfulness in the design!

Gotta love this guy Gerald... when he starts getting to the internals of cameras, i dont even know what this man is talking about but if hes excited about the camera then i know its good!
Brilliant review, great delivery. nailed it all really. Unusual to see a camera review framed, exposed and focused for a change! Thanks for taking the time to produce it.
Very nice job, Gerald! One clarification re: audio - you can use your F6 with a -35dB attenuator cable and should be able to feed audio to the a7S III fine - just a note for those who would rather use their F6 rather than the XLR adapter. For MixPre, no attenuator cable needed - the output fader will reduce the levels adequately.
An epic piece of advice! Thanks Curtis! 👍
That makes a lot of sense- I was wondering about the same thing as I feed h4N line out to DSLRs using a Sescom attenuator.
@Curtis Judd
Was going to point this out, too. I have the MixPre-10 II as well, and have used other recorders with attenuator cables plenty of times in the past as well.
Ha, and earlier today when the A7S-III's audio specs were revealed, I thought to myself that I would just wait for Curtis to test the internal digital and analog audio performance. ;)
With the potential to record 4 tracks internally, it could definitely come in handy in certain circumstances.
While I'm being extremely nitpicky here, whenever any type of resistor is used in an analog audio circuit, including as a passive attenuator, it adds a minute amount of noise/contributes to the overall noise floor and SNR.
But it's insignificant for all intents and purposes here. Only if you were stacking or summing a great deal of tracks with attenuators would it become an issue.
@@bbfoto7248 Thanks, yes, an interesting new set of audio features for a hybrid camera. One clarification: I have not specifically tested the a7S III input, just pointing out that there are other options given the F6's output issue. Would love for more of the manufacturers to implement a line level input setting on their hybrid cameras: A humble approach which concedes they are not the best equipped to provide high quality audio on their own and allow users to add other products to obtain better audio quality.
And to your point re: resistors and attenuation cables - completely agree. In addition to adding noise via the resistor, it also sends the audio signal through two separate gain stages which isn't necessarily ideal, but probably "good enough" for most hybrid camera shooters.
Always count on Curtis to fly in with excellent advice for audio.
Jesus, how hard was it not letting this one out of the bag early?
wating to see what canon was holding but it looks like sony play their cards very good.
I'm blown away by the camera and this video, I've never seen a more comprehensive review of anything.

Killer video Gerald! Couldn't wait for yours! :) Does your DR testing match up with the results at Cinema 5d (for me to cross-compare)? Also, it was interesting to see your A7s3 was slightly more detailed compared the A7iii. I found the opposite but they are still surprisingly close. I may have missed it but what codec did you use for your test shots? (especially that one).

This review single handedly made me subscribe. Thanks man. I've been looking at this camera for a while. I'm buying.
Amazing video man, thank you! One question - I shoot a lot of RGB and low-light in studio. Primarily use my GH5S for this over my a7iii as both my G7 and GH5S handle the Philips Hue system (and other) with no banding. Additionally, the GH5S has micro adjustable shutter speed in increments of .1 similar to Canon’s Clearscan. The a7III does not have a fix for this and its sensor readout out speed (rolling shutter) causes big banding issues with Hue, though not my other professional RGB systems. Any improvements in this regard on the a7s iii?
Interesting. Surely that would be as simple as a software upgrade fix?
Guide for exposing the a7sIII please ❤️
This is the most elaborate breakdown I've ever laid eyes on! Absolutely amazing and subscribed!
Came here because my A1 hasn’t arrived yet so I’ve been thinking of changing my order to the A7Siii. Looks like it might arrive next week though. I’d still like to have one though.
