I chose the a7IV (arriving tomorrow) because Im a photographer who shoots video. The APS-C crop at 4K60p isn't a big deal to me, pretty much every cinema camera has a sensor right around that same size anyways. Plus at 4K24 and 30, the IV downsamples from 7K, something the a7SIII can't even come close to matching. I thought all the video guys always say to shoot at 24fps anyways? I'll take video shot in 7K over video shot in 4.2K all day every day. They are both great cameras but Id rather have the much better resolution and a more capable photo camera than full 4K60 shot at only 4.2K.
I could notice the difference. The a7SIII has a smoother colour and highlight/shadow transition that pushes it closer to the FX line cameras. The A7IV is detailed but has more of a digital feel. Of course, these are only evident when you compare them side by side.
@@julieannhobbs6456 when you shoot at 60fps the image is ‘cropped/reduced’ by a factor. From what I heard I believe it’s 1.5 time for the A7 IV. That for example means that if you have a given lens on, say a 35mm, the focal will vary when you move from 24fps to 60fps. It’s a bit like if you full frame would become an APSC when changing frame rate.
@@joenguyenps It's terrible for photos! I personally use it only for videos to shoot weddings (especially indoors cause it's great for the low light environment) & video portraits but never use it for photos cause even with my 85mm 1.4 lens images are not sharp. Once you zoom it in, you'll see that the skin is distorted and you can't do retouching. So A7siii is only for videos and you can snap some photos for your insta but def not for clients. I wouldn't risk it.
I would say: 'both camera's are great hybrid shooters, being the A7SIII leaning more to filming and the A7M3 more to stills' However I have the A7S3 and I must say, its perfect for my needs. My main things are concerts and events... for that I want superbe low light capabilities and SPEED! Before the sun comes up, my photo's have to be ready for social or else someone with a smartphone steals my place in the media. The A7S3 lets me take shots no one else can and the 12MP stills unload and proces lightning fast... and it would be great to have 33MP and the 3-way switch...
@@22s22a The crop factor means only a fraction of the sensor will be used to capture videos in 4K 60fps mode which will result in a zoomed in video compared to regular modes such as 4K 24fps or 1080p. The crop will also mean you have less flexibility for zooming in when you edit because it's already zoomed in from the camera and you will lose quality
@@ChevaughnBeckford i feel if Video is your primary focus, the A7Siii would do the job yes? Since this is Hybrid in A7IV... Why are people upset that it has compromise?
I have an A7R4 and A7S3 and I often find I only take my S3 because of the great video and the photos are still really nice. If you are using on social media and websites the S3 12MP photos are plenty good.
how different is the video tho ? like RAW to RAW where is the difference. at the start of this video, i really couldnt tell the difference on which cam was which. looks same same to me
I love that the 7IV has 4K60, but the crop is a huge disappointment. The 7SIII is to expensive and only have 12 MP. Because I do photo and video i’ll wait until the 7IV gets a little bit cheaper…
@@SamuelJamesVideos exactly, people are always caught up on mp, but don’t understand the science behind it and all the other factors. The siii takes some beautiful photos and I’ve printed a lot of the pics I’ve taken and they look great.
Thanks for the videos Peter, they were very well organized, and out of all the ones I’ve seen were presented the best! Problem with these comparisons, and you said it yourself, is that when you take the a7iv and compare is to the a7siii, you are comparing apples to oranges. The S is over a grand more and made for video primarily and then you have the hybrid. People just don’t understand that you can’t make the A7 series the same as the S series, or you might as well just make it an S series… People seem to want/expect the A1 or A7siii at the price that the a7iii is currently going for. Like cars, clothes, RC cars, computers…there are levels to this. You can’t expect a rock crawler to also perform like a lambo!
Super useful camera at that price point. The elephant in the room is the horrific rolling shutter in video mode. As a note, I do find the A7S III has that creamy cinematic edge, less clinical.
no lie the crop dont seem like a big issue I still use my a7iii with sony 35mm 1.8 oss and some times in full frame mode wit clear image zoom. I can see a lot of people who still have sony aps-c lenses making full use of this crop mode with no issue. also super 35 has always been a standard for video idk why all the new hype for full frame is annoying to focus manually due to the depth of field I prefer aps-c for video and full frame for photos....just the. way it's always been
@@str8poisintv131 tell that to the owners of primes 20/24/35/50 who bought FE lenses and was planning to get IV for 50/60 fps. Why sony put high end processor which can do all-i and 120 and limits with crop?
@@Pfagnan ppl who need 120 they will go with fx3/a7s3 they know why they need it and where to use it. It wont effects Sony sales if it would be 60 with no crop. Sony would benefit from it and increase more sale for a7 iv and lenses.
First, I like your Swinglish accent. Second, I have pre-ordered the A7iv. Yes, I would love the A7Siii. That being said, I think the A7iv is more impressive than some are making it out to be. When it comes to cameras, I think more people complain about stuff that has little to do with their day to day uses of these cameras. For instance, corner sharpness. In my view, its one of the least relevant or important features in a camera. Partly because I shoot mainly video, and I think photographers are more concerned with corner sharpness than anyone else. That being said, I can't think of one time when I went to a photo gallery and even thought about looking at the corners of a photo I was viewing. Plus, I think it's hilarious when reviewers zoom in on a corner at around 300-400%, as if anyone would actually 'zoom in' that close when looking at a photo. Except for maybe a photographer. Anyway, there are SO many things I think people worry about when it comes to cameras that I find to be a waste of brain power that it would make my comment longer than needed. Bottom line. I'm getting the A7iv. And I couldn't be more excited.
Peter nailed the explination. I mostly do event photography & video work. Sometimes special photo ops happen in seconds and in that situation, the A7IV is great for having the flexibility to crop the photos later in post. HOWEVER, if I had to pick one, it would be the A7SIII. Don't let the 12mp sensor fool you. Its great at taking photos. I've done professional gigs for photo and video with just the A7SIII. The reason why I got the IV was to have a capable but cheaper 2nd camera body so I didn't need to waste time swapping lenses.
I really like your explanation and mentioning that the 12 megapixel still takes great photos I am coming from the A7R2 however I am now doing about 90% video work I’ve literally never crop the photo ever usually use different lenses or a 24 to 70 which pretty much covers my needs for that the 873 seems to be calling my name but I am a little bit worried with that 12 megapixel I mainly do social media work so I’m guessing the 12 megapixel photos won’t be too much of an issue for me my biggest thing about crops is that they do not change the focal compression so I tend to swap lenses anyway to get the desired focal length not just a crop do you guys think the A7S three would work for me considering I am doing primarily video and see myself using 60 frames per second quite regularly
@@willawtry5119 100% Yes! If you're doing more video work, I'd recomend getting a A7SIII or a FX3 if you're in the market for a sony system. Like you, I try to do most of the work in-camera so cropping isn't much of an issue for my type of filming. Otherwise, I've done event & corporate photos and videos with the A7SIII with no complaints or issues. While the megapixel count is smaller than most, the megapixel size is physically bigger and allows for better dynamic range. great for low light and extreme high noon desert lighting. I've had my A7SIII for a little over a year and I have no complaints other than the memory cards needed to shoot at higher framerates are extremely expensive, so i'd look into that before purchasing. Happy shopping!
@@TheArtofLight Thank you man! Im super glad to hear this!! I also have an A7R2 which covers me fine for photography, I may bring that with me on shoots for photo :) if I really need specific stills but that would be rare :)
I brushed off the a7sIII's photo capability because it only had 12mp but the colors are waaaaay better than my a7iii so I always end up using the sIII for photos and it's a lot quicker to switch modes that to switch cameras.
Been wondering myself if I should go for the A7siii since I will end up using my A7iii as a B cam. I guess it's better if I focus more on video, especially since the A7iii is (still) so good at taking photos.
I don't miss the rolling shutter on A7iii. A7iv seems similar. Would stick with A7siii for that reason alone. I don't do whip pans but it's the jello effect when shooting handheld that really bothers me with A7iii. I was editing some old A7iii footage yesterday and was thinking "What's with the jello?!", then I remembered what it used to be like. A7siii is SO much better when it comes to rolling shutter.
I narrowed all my lenses down to just three. My 2 favorite focal lengths 24 gm and 50 1.2 gm along with a backup 24-70. I say that to say this. The crop factor would completely eliminate my favorite parts about both primes.
@@AJCoReTV 🤦🏿♂️ if my favorite focal lengths are 24, 50 why would O look for a 20????? I already have the 16mm which is equivalent to 24. But with an A7iii i have no reason whatsoever to to want an A7iv
@@Mperrymanstudios I’m coming from an A7C… which I’m keeping as a B-cam. A7C crops at 4K/30… too many upgrades to ignore for me to not upgrade to the A74 for both video & photo. Sounds like you made up your mind, so long as you are happy, enjoy the heck out of it.
I need a hybrid camera, as I do a lot of photography. So maybe the A7IV, but I really would love to be able to do 4K60 without the crop. So I guess none of them is the right camera for me. Great video, as always!
I opted for the A7IV even though I primarily shoot video. If they were the same price I'd probably choose the SIII, but I don't feel like I'm missing that much. Not to mention the A7IV has more detailed 4K, it's got Movie, Stills S&Q dial and it's a newer camera so it should hold it's value longer. I never find myself needing 4K 120 and in many situations the 4k 60 crop is actually more if an aid than a hinderance for the type of videos I shoot.
It's good you're simply using the tool that suits your needs most. I opted for the a7S III as I love the 4K 120p and my weddings benefits from the low light dynamics, although a7 iv isn't too bad in low light either.
I went to a festival in 2021 and I rented the a7s3 with a 70-200 and omg it was the most fun setup I've ever used. I used it for photos and video and I have to say the image quality was definitely a big step up coming from someone who regularly uses an a6300. Its a bit out of my price range but i had the most fun shooting with that and the a7s2. Currently shooting with an a6600 but nothing near what the s3 can do in terms of video and photo. The 6600 is good but not great. It does not offer the lowlight capabilities of the a7s3. That thing can shoot in straight-up pitch black. I shoot alot of concerts and festivals so having a camera that's good in lowlight like the a7s3 was a gamechanger for me. For now though I'm okay with my a6600 setup!
is this crop in 4k60fps a software thing and could be perhaps fixed in a future software update or is it a hardware limitation and there's nothing we can do about it? How about using a capture card and connecting the camera to it by HDMI or those Atomos ninja recorders - can they remove that limitation?
I feel it's hardware design, might be wrong but a7iii/a6100-a6600 didn't get any 4k30 un-cropping software upgrades so things will likely stay same, also 33mp is a ton of data to process/not to mention increased heat - so crop makes sense
pre-ordered the A7 IV yesterday with Tarmon 28-75 F2.8. Using lumix s5 right now. Cheaper hybrid than the A7 IV but the same specs(4.2.2 10Bit, 4k60p 1.5crop ect. so crop is not a big deal for me) But the sony lens line up worth the change for me if i think on the future. At my level of videography the A7SIII is OverPowered as hell AND EXPENSIVE...! If i feel confortable with the a7IV and got the right lenses for my setup. I'll MAYBE get the a7S IV in the future! Nice vid as always.
The SIII's IMX510 sensor is actually a 48 megapixel design. On readout, it digitally combines 4 adjacent pixels into one (for a total of 12mp). It's almost identical to the A1's IMX610 sensor, which explains how the A1 is "magically" able to do everything the SIII can do and more, retaining all of the dynamic range and having even better noise performance, despite _seemingly_ having a much higher resolution sensor. This also means that the individual photosites on the A7IV are quite a bit _larger_ than the SIII's.
I really want to get a photo camera. I have an A6500 with a Atomos recorder for prores 4:2:2 10 bit 4k... Although the A7siii is my dream I feel like I have what I need for video but not photo. But the A7iv sounds like a good video camera as a back up maybe or for talking heads videos.... Any opinion, because I'm torn. Also not sure what the next camera is coming and if it's best to wait.
Probably going to buy this A7 IV as B cam for my A7S III. I like to shot pictures expecially when traveling and that extra "quality" will be the sweet spot. For commercial use the S and the higher frame rate with no crop is still the best for me.
Ill give you a REALLY good hint for where the links pop up: Its on you watch and ring arm! There, you can thank me later. Also... Still undecided between the 2 models. Megapixels or filming.... What to do, what to do?!
I’m using the FX3 so the a7iv is a perfect b cam (instead of the A1 which I’d love but can’t afford lol) as I often do a little product photography. The crop in 4k60 doesn’t matter to me as this camera would be my second interview cam for video and nothing more.
@@PurseyProductions if I get the A7siii I'll make it my first camera for video and I would keep my A6500 for photos due to the 24 mp and use it as a second camera for video too. I could possibly sell the A6500 and all its lenses tho and use that money to replace it with a second hand A7iii
@@ClaudioDesideriFilms had a lot of time to think about this… and I’ll probably keep my A7C as it’s 24mp, small and compact plus flip out screen, eye AF in video and great AF video and use this as a B cam against my A7S3
As a Video Shooter always A7SIII. If A7IV wouldn't have 4k6p in 1.5 crop I would definitely go with A7IV. I think Sony is also giving competition to its own models.
Thanks Peter! Based purely on budget, I'd go for the A7IV. What about form factor between the two? Are they so similar that the A7SIII cage will fit the A7IV?
I JUST placed my order for the Sony A7Slll and will be picking it up mañana!! I was stuck between the two! Because of this video let me just say . . . GRACIAS AMIGO!!!!!
I got the intro question right, it was easy to tell, but I still ordered the A7 IV. I mainly do 4k@24fps, so a crop at 60fps is not an issue. I think if the cameras were the same price I might consider the a7s III since I am mostly doing video. I am upgrading from an a7 III btw
I produced two YT channels And bought my A73 when they released, resisted the A7Siii for short time but broke down and got one when I could 1st of ‘21 AND just ordered the A74…. Man the siii is hard to hate.. even at $3600
Would have to go with the A7IV just because of budget. Coming from an A6400 it's a huge improvement and about $2000 less than the A7SIII. As a student I can't justify the A7SIII even though I exclusively do videography 🥲🥲
Upgrading from the 6400 as well. Just sold my old kit now ready to jump all over the A7IV. In my budget and I don’t need 4K 120 And video I shoot ( mostly commercial/cooperate) I won’t notice any rolling shutter issues. I hope haha
exactly what I am getting it for. Colour science, flip screen and 4:2:2 and as someone who shoots 50/50 photo and video I will be excited to have both of these in my kit! But I also understand why people who shoot with 1 cam and don't have an Siii would be disappointed with the video features
@@homonki8795 I suspect Sony will firmware update their 4K 60 APSC if sales are not what they expected And the FPS is disappointing I won’t lie but I am not a sports or wildlife shooter. I shoot food and occasional portraits. So I don’t need it but it is still 10fps lossless compress raw and apparently if you have a CFX type A card it can basically just be held down on the shutter because the write speeds are so quick. Investing in a better SD card is worth it if you are run and gun
i was waitting the a7iv and i ll probably buy the R6 D: seems the most solid choice if you are new to the market.especially if you are video oriented, no crop(1,07 is no crop) good low light decent lens choices.
Definitely Sony has better lens selection than RF right now. A7iv does internal 10bit 422 video and has full size hdmi. I would say A7iv is still better than R6.
@@techy1433 well R6 has also 10 bit internal, the full size hdmi for me is no issue even though i would prefer a full size but i will not commit to a brand only for that .... that crop is big, i had the S5 and damn man so big
Considering I can shoot 4k 60 All-I on my a7S III with a V90 SD-II card.. I would think it shouldn't be an issue. Although it is technically downsampling it from 4.8k instead of the 4.2k on the a7S III. It is also doing in Super 35 mode. I'd say I'm 90% sure, but maybe do more research.
This camera is so close! Sony really missed the mark by handicapping the 4k 60 to crop mode. I realize that they didn’t want to cannibalize their A7SIII/FX3/A1 sales, but competition is getting fierce in this camera space. For those of us looking for a solid hybrid shooter we want the megapixel of this camera with at least true 4k 60. My other two gripes are the rolling shutter issues and only including 1 CF express card slot. I’m curious if the 4K 60 limitation is only a firmware handicap and if they could activate it with a software update if we create a lot of noise!
I read that they used the same chip as the A7iii, meaning that it’s a hardware limitation. You can do 4K 30 uncropped but the 4K 60 has to be cropped. My guess would be to avoid overheating.
Let make a lot of noise for this downgraded feature. Sony may be caring about selling their products by getting things right a little bit at a time. They get you to buy two rather than just one. Let's STOP buying these cameras for several months and see what they are going to do.
What do you think of the rolling shutter (a7iv)? How bad it is? It would be great if you test it in different scenarios. I pre-ordered one but my only concern is the rolling shutter in videos.
I think the bad rolling shutter on the a7IV is a big deal so I think the a7SIII is still the overall winner for video (but it depends on what you shoot). But I would love to see some of the new tech and features of the a7IV come to the a7SIII in a firmware update (focus map, the variable shutter speed, focus breathing compensation, and animal eye AF in video)
It's coming "home" to take the place nr.1, A7III goes to nr.2, A6400 to nr.3 and the A5100 becomes the overhead camera. I'm a hybrid shooter and the addition of 33MP is more of an argument than the compromising cropping in 4K 60. I'll be fine.
I have the A7s3 and was going to sell and buy the A7IV but I’m a little underwhelmed with A7IV video wise, the crop at 4k 60 and rolling shutter put me off, plus I can still get banging pictures with A7siii. I also thought it would at least get the A7Siii screen, but hey ho you can’t have it all.
So I am brand-new "rookie". I'm buying the new Sony a7iv kit that comes with sel2870 lens to start my new chapter in my life. Would I be able to shoot videos and take photos with this lens?
Is the Sony A7IV any good for shooting a video indoors in low lighting (like if one's face is lit only by a candle)? I just don't have so much money for the A7Siii.
I love the A7IV, price was not an issue, I had bought A1 and sent it back because I simply couldn't justify the $6500 when the A7IV meets and exceeds my hybrid needs. I love the A7IV, used the A7SIII and it is a good camera but for my short films, I use Red Cameras. The Lumix S5 is another great example of a hybrid camera and now you can get it with a lens for $1700
Helpful information as always, Peter! Did you have a chance to compare stabilization and 4K 50/60p rolling shutter between the SIII and 7IV? Curious how they compare on those 2 fronts. I know both now have the Active stabilization available now, just wondering if they are indistinguishable or one is better than the other on that front. Some of the reviews I've watched with regard to rolling shutter at 4K/24p on the 7IV appeared disappointing and not an improvement over the 7iii, but I'd love to see a stacked comparison between the [cropped in] 4K 100/120p on the 7IV and Siii. I think there's a story there...
the 1.5 crop in 4k 50/60p has left a window open for the competitors to come in, remember its almost 2022 and its not a super cheaper camera over here in Australia
Hi P. I have the R2 and M3 and they both have the craziest anying thing, when using an external monitor and shooting in 4k..... the menus are not on the external monitor. Do you know if this issue is present on the s3 and m4? That alone would keep me from upgrading. Anyway, thanx and happy new year from Denmark🎉
To be really honest I did see a difference... I admit it was almost minimal, but there was a difference... and I guessed right that the left picture was the a7siii. The a7IV seemed like having a bit less of dynamic range.
shooting stills the numbers of shots can be determined thus evaluating how much the camera was used, but can video usage can be found when buying second hand?
Im upgrading my camera for my youtube videos. Up to now I used a Panasonic 4k cam corder nice but everything was in focus. I wanted to get the super sharp focus on me and have the back slightly blurry. I al looking at the A7iv vs a Cannon M6 MKii. *Any chance you could do an A7c vs. A7IV comparison?* I’m looking at buying my first camera to start UA-cam, and use as a webcam for zoom, and general social media use. The A7c + 20mm f1.8 lens is likely what I’m looking at for total $3700 AUD. The A7IV is $4200 AUD with no lens. I want to ensure that if I’m investing in a camera that the quality is high with a crisp image that will hold up for years, and look professional. Yes, the content matters, however, if I’m spending money and can control the video quality that’s a big step forward for me. I would rather save, and spend a little more money if the quality difference is that much. Cheers.
@@hubbablahloo1843 The rolling shutter is a side effect of the increased MP. It's too much data for their lower grade processors to move through when down-rezzing from 7k. Just a shame it’s a follow up to one of the most successful cameras of all time
How is the a7iv “more limited” than the a7iii? The 33 MP vs 24? Can anyone demonstrate how much of a low light difference there is in 4k from a 24MP sensor vs oversampled 4k from a 33MP sensor?
The A7SIII has another important feature that A7IV doesn't have is the Auto White Balance sensor locate in front of camera, next to the IR sensor. I'm sure the A7SIII auto white balance will be more accurate than the A7IV. Up until now, I think the only 2 cameras that have this external AWB sensor are A1 and A7SIII.
I bought the A7IV on BlackFriday and it arrived last week, in this short time so much happened in my neighbourhood and I was amazed, how the Camera performs in video mode and photo mode as well. I shot some pics of Fireman’s who fought against a Category 3 fire in my neighbourhood. I got some incredible good photos out of the cam which I’m editing right now in Lightroom and I think it’s the perfect Hybrid cam for the money I paid. I got a very good deal and paid 1880€ for the Body brand new of a Local Photoshop. And the price of the A7sIII is too high for me right now. I mean it’s two times the money I paid for my A7IV. God Kväll Peter, jag behöver din hus är häftigt.

And the second lens for shooting 4k travel video with the maximum possible quality and the minimum possible weight, that would for a day of walking around new cities shoulder and back said thank you)))
I'm keeping my A7Siii for photography. I do have higher resolution cameras for when I need it, but I do like 12 MP images for testing, shots that don't require more resolution, and old glass that will resolve very well on the sensor. Plus, I really like the colors that come out of the A7Siii. The only feature I'm bummed that the Siii does not have is the ability to use PDAF up to f/22 - but I have another camera that can do that when I need it and at least the high resolution EVF makes manual focus easier for taking over CDAF pulsing past f/11. :)
Hey Peter, I'm curious your thoughts on how easy it would be to use the a7IV in a live multi-cam shoot with the a7sIII. For the opening comparison, they look very well matched. But what did you do/how much work did it take to match the two cameras? Curious what color profile(s) you shot in, what ISO setting for each camera, etc. and did matching the two require additional corrections in post production?
@@PeterLindgren1 Did you match them just using in camera settings or did you have to do extra corrections in post? If in camera, what settings did use?
Yup... plus S3 seemed to have more details in the shadow. Only comparing them side by side paused...
I noticed the same thing!
Surely, I also noticed this with pause On.

How do you like it when taking photos?
@@joenguyenps a7S3 is great for photos, compressed RAW files are easier to handle & store
@@ReginaMirova oh good that’ll be bad news for me 😩😩😩😭
I would say: 'both camera's are great hybrid shooters, being the A7SIII leaning more to filming and the A7M3 more to stills' However I have the A7S3 and I must say, its perfect for my needs.
This comment is perfect because I'm in the same realm!
I would of bought a7iv but 4k 60fps crop factor is a deal breaker.
I'm not a video person can someone explain what the big deal is about that?
@@22s22a The crop factor means only a fraction of the sensor will be used to capture videos in 4K 60fps mode which will result in a zoomed in video compared to regular modes such as 4K 24fps or 1080p. The crop will also mean you have less flexibility for zooming in when you edit because it's already zoomed in from the camera and you will lose quality

I love that the 7IV has 4K60, but the crop is a huge disappointment. The 7SIII is to expensive and only have 12 MP. Because I do photo and video i’ll wait until the 7IV gets a little bit cheaper…
12mp is a good thing. Less noise in low light and high resolution.
Could this crop be solved in a future firmware update? Maybe we should All push sony for it! The camera is capable…

@@DjAce15 its actually the other way round! A7 iv is sharper in 4k30 because it uses oversampling from 7k!

People just don’t understand that you can’t make the A7 series the same as the S series, or you might as well just make it an S series…
People seem to want/expect the A1 or A7siii at the price that the a7iii is currently going for. Like cars, clothes, RC cars, computers…there are levels to this. You can’t expect a rock crawler to also perform like a lambo!
I guess this is "if I only had 1 choice" vid, but the IV is gonna be a great B-cam to my A7S3.
If i had the choice of the two i would go for the SIII every time.. 12 Mpix is plenty for big prints(50x70cm)..
I pre-ordered the a7iv, I really want the bigger pics for family & travel photography but I also love top notch video quality for vlogging :)
Super useful camera at that price point. The elephant in the room is the horrific rolling shutter in video mode. As a note, I do find the A7S III has that creamy cinematic edge, less clinical.
Easy to spot differences between both cameras. Looks like I'm skipping a7 iv because of the crop factor!
Comparing $3498 vs $2499 Is this guy is noob ??? 😄
no lie the crop dont seem like a big issue I still use my a7iii with sony 35mm 1.8 oss and some times in full frame mode wit clear image zoom.

I brushed off the a7sIII's photo capability because it only had 12mp but the colors are waaaaay better than my a7iii so I always end up using the sIII for photos and it's a lot quicker to switch modes that to switch cameras.
same here, using a7S3 for photography instead of a7iii, compressed RAW are easier to handle & shutter is quieter

I need a hybrid camera, as I do a lot of photography. So maybe the A7IV, but I really would love to be able to do 4K60 without the crop. So I guess none of them is the right camera for me. Great video, as always!
Getting the A7S3 tomorrow! Thanks for convincing me further 😄 Whats the song name btw!?
I opted for the A7IV even though I primarily shoot video. If they were the same price I'd probably choose the SIII, but I don't feel like I'm missing that much. Not to mention the A7IV has more detailed 4K, it's got Movie, Stills S&Q dial and it's a newer camera so it should hold it's value longer. I never find myself needing 4K 120 and in many situations the 4k 60 crop is actually more if an aid than a hinderance for the type of videos I shoot.
Are you experiencing any overheating issues with the A7 IV?
Agreed! I have the same thoughts when it comes to the A7iv. Thought about the A7Siii and i keep thinking about it too.
Peter, would you be able to please let me know if A7S-III cages would fit the A7-IV?
It does. It’s literally the same body. The battery grip works as well.
is this crop in 4k60fps a software thing and could be perhaps fixed in a future software update or is it a hardware limitation and there's nothing we can do about it?
Hello Peter, can you tell me if the rigs and cases for A7SIII fit on A7IV?
I really want to get a photo camera. I have an A6500 with a Atomos recorder for prores 4:2:2 10 bit 4k... Although the A7siii is my dream I feel like I have what I need for video but not photo. But the A7iv sounds like a good video camera as a back up maybe or for talking heads videos....
Any opinion, because I'm torn. Also not sure what the next camera is coming and if it's best to wait.
a7iv is solid pick
Probably going to buy this A7 IV as B cam for my A7S III. I like to shot pictures expecially when traveling and that extra "quality" will be the sweet spot. For commercial use the S and the higher frame rate with no crop is still the best for me.
Ill give you a REALLY good hint for where the links pop up: Its on you watch and ring arm! There, you can thank me later. Also... Still undecided between the 2 models. Megapixels or filming.... What to do, what to do?!
Hi thank you for the video. All I would like to know is if the the super 35 mode impacts the dynamic range or lowlight capabilities
I would imagine it to impact those areas, since less of the sensor is utilized
I’m using the FX3 so the a7iv is a perfect b cam (instead of the A1 which I’d love but can’t afford lol) as I often do a little product photography. The crop in 4k60 doesn’t matter to me as this camera would be my second interview cam for video and nothing more.

Can you shoot 1080p in 10 bit 60/120 fps? and if does the 1080p look good?
I think 1080p 120fps in 10bit instead of 8bit would be more important than 4k60 without crop.
Let make a lot of noise for this downgraded feature. Sony may be caring about selling their products by getting things right a little bit at a time. They get you to buy two rather than just one. Let's STOP buying these cameras for several months and see what they are going to do.
@Alfred S. Sikula Yes. I am not buying wo 4k60.
@@xkben90 I wouldn’t think it’s only about overheating. Processing power and the data bus bandwidth are probably limiting factors here.
What do you think of the rolling shutter (a7iv)?
How bad it is? It would be great if you test it in different scenarios.
I pre-ordered one but my only concern is the rolling shutter in videos.
Check out Gerald Undone's video.
its pretty much the same as the a7iii and I've had bo issue with the a7ii rolling shutter anyone upgrading will be fine
It pretty bad like the A73...
A7IV is the perfect hybrid and would make an excellent b-cam for videos.
I'm curious about the cage...
Can A7IV's body fit in the old one A7s3 cage?
Can you compare Sony a7sIII with some 6k cameras? Why not to compare with Arri Alexa mini?
wich lens had you on this for this Video?
Hi Peter, what lense did you use for this video? It looks amazing 😀
I guessed it right by the highlights in the lighting in the top right the dynamic range is better
Loved hearing your thoughts on this!
Is A7Siv coming this year ?
Its not coming at all
So I am brand-new "rookie". I'm buying the new Sony a7iv kit that comes with sel2870 lens to start my new chapter in my life. Would I be able to shoot videos and take photos with this lens?
Which is better for videos and which is better for photos and which is better for both.
Is the Sony A7IV any good for shooting a video indoors in low lighting (like if one's face is lit only by a candle)? I just don't have so much money for the A7Siii.
yes it's great for low light, 4k 24/30 is oversampled from 7k so this large sensor is being utilized to it's full potential
what compact lightweight lens would you recommend with a7 4? don’t mind if it’s focused more on video
I think for a pro they work great together for anyone upgrading from a73 it’s a solid buy
If take some photos and videos, A7iv or A7Siii prefer to buy ?
so mostly video? a7s3 makes sense then, but a7iv is good for video too - just a bit different
I bought the A7Siii for video first. Loving 🥰 it. Thanks Peter.
the 1.5 crop in 4k 50/60p has left a window open for the competitors to come in, remember its almost 2022 and its not a super cheaper camera over here in Australia
Sony A7IV or Canon R6 is a strong question. I mostly wonder about the USABILITY of how they FEEL when using.
Would love to see a comparison between the A74 and the A1, very hard to justify the price difference between them!
They're on the monitor now. I had the same setup like yours and upgraded to the 4 and C.
How about buying Both if you need two Cameras?
is the image quality in video comparable to a Blackmagic pocket 6k? or are the codecs/bitrate worse?
To be really honest I did see a difference... I admit it was almost minimal, but there was a difference... and I guessed right that the left picture was the a7siii. The a7IV seemed like having a bit less of dynamic range.
shooting stills the numbers of shots can be determined thus evaluating how much the camera was used, but can video usage can be found when buying second hand?
Nope
Im upgrading my camera for my youtube videos. Up to now I used a Panasonic 4k cam corder nice but everything was in focus. I wanted to get the super sharp focus on me and have the back slightly blurry. I al looking at the A7iv vs a Cannon M6 MKii. I really want them for the you tube videos and not so much for videotaping a trip etc, Ill still use the 4k camcorder but Ill use these cameras for photos because the 33 MP. Im stumped, is the crop that bad for what I want ?
An A7IV Would suit you well!
@@PeterLindgren1 thank you! I will use the iv for photos and UA-cam and the 4K cam for trips etc
Har du filmat nåt i HDR10?
hur svårt är det att få till?
Måste HDR videon från dom här kamerorna in i davinci resolve och tweakas för att få bra resultat eller går det att slänga upp på en HDR tv direkt?
Cheers.
when I need a smile on my face you always put it there. Thanks.
Don’t forget the rolling shutter on the a74 is still horrendous compared to the a7s3
I Would have rather they improved the rolling shutter and Ibis than upping the mega pixels
@@hubbablahloo1843 yesss!
@@hubbablahloo1843 The rolling shutter is a side effect of the increased MP. It's too much data for their lower grade processors to move through when down-rezzing from 7k. Its annoying for sure but I don't shoot much action stuff... a lot of seated interviews etc.
I can see why people are disappointed but I also had the expectation it was never going to be an A7iii repeat where it blew everyone away.
BUT as someone who shoots on an A7siii for video it should be an excellent stills camera and B cam because 12mp does annoy my from time to time when it comes to photography
@@EdwardWischer just feels like this cam isn't as revolutionary as it's predecessor. I feel Sony is losing it's competitive spirit because feel like they have "arrived" and don't have to be that competitive anymore esp. with the price they are asking for
@@hubbablahloo1843 I’d agree it isn’t the surprise the A7iii but I wouldn’t argue Sony has lost its edge. Siii and A1 within the last year. One of their cameras had to be the basic model and maybe we are just a little spoilt for features over the last 4 years from Sony. One camera had to be a bit disappointing along the way!
Good video thank u!
Is the a7 4 good for workouts videos, podcast , and fashion videos??
Which cf express card are you using on the a7siii?
you didnt really talk about the rolling shutter issues of the A7IV
The A7SIII has another important feature that A7IV doesn't have is the Auto White Balance sensor locate in front of camera, next to the IR sensor. I'm sure the A7SIII auto white balance will be more accurate than the A7IV. Up until now, I think the only 2 cameras that have this external AWB sensor are A1 and A7SIII.
useful info thx, FX3 should have it too yes?
I bought a7sIII to film video content for Creative society project. And I think a7 iV can be a good b-Cam for interview shooting.
Oooh, what a channel, what a find👍👍👍👍Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was choosing between Canon r6m2 and Sony A7m4, I will take the sony.... Please suggest the top portrait lens (budget is unlimited) with the most gorgeous blurred background.
They work pretty much seamlessly together 😊
@@PeterLindgren1 Did you match them just using in camera settings or did you have to do extra corrections in post? If in camera, what settings did use?
How would you compare ibis between the 2?
