Taiwan is undoubtedly obsessed with hot pot! Welcome to Taichung, Taiwan, and today we’re going on a Taiwanese hot pot tour, but two totally different styles - one that’s on the luxury modern trendy side, and the other is a street food legend. We’ll compare the atmosphere, the ingredients, and then of course the prices. Let’s go eat Taiwan hot pot!
King of Hot Pot (嗑肉石鍋-南屯豐樂店): goo.gl/maps/D2DfaEKhanHgiShW7 - The first place is a modern trendy hot pot with a hilarious bleacher platter of beef and meats. The flavor was honestly a little underwhelming, just not enough flavor in the broth. Ingredients were alright.
Total price - 1805 TWD ($59.70)
Taiwan Chen Hot Pot (台灣陳沙茶火鍋): goo.gl/maps/kAUhCZ8d4GiDNehf7 - This places is an alley street food legend in Taichung and their hot pot was outstanding, including the ingredients, and sauces. I especially loved their local Taiwan beef.
Total price - 2,000 TWD ($66.14)
Oddly enough, the street food hot pot turned out to be slightly more expensive than the trendy place!
And which place did I like better… you probably can tell Taiwan Chen Hot Pot (台灣陳沙茶火鍋)!

This is not just a Food & Travel channel ....This is a cultural documentary that makes me appreciate our planet and I will support this channel till I'm an old man. 👍👍👍
Yes I agree very interesting show
Thank you very much!
Definitely... culture and food - what a great channel. :)
Unequivocally yes! Well said!
Are you sure about it?
Mark, I am a truck driver. I have watched all your videos and I love it. I am glad I get to travel at least visually and enjoy amazing food through your eyes.
Are you otr? If so, is it worth it? I was thinking of going otr to travel & make much more money but I think it'd be better with a girl.
You mean you are a an old stinky couch driver in your mom's basement?
@@Dave-nb1zz he possibly have less chance traveling and eating street food. but by watching the channel , he do not have to randomly eat street food which saves his money and time.
I f you are a truck driver then you get to travel not only visualy, probably you travel more than Mark?
You should get a little induction stove and get that hot pot rolling in your truck brother lol
14:55 That’s shacha sauce, a common hot pot dipping sauce, made from soybean oil, garlic, shallots, brill fish and dried shrimp, can be mixed with any combination of sesame oil, soy sauce, black vinegar, green onion, sugar, crushed peanuts or peanut powder, hot peppers …etc.
Stop it. You're making me hungry.
U know shacha sauce too well
Shacha sauce is the Chinese version of satay sauce from Indonesia. Early Chinese immigrants went to Indonesia and learned it from Indonesia and brought their own version back to southern China.
It sounds like a heallthy Choice dinner I once had
stop pretending you are not the owner... you know all the secret ingredients 😒🙄👏👏👏
Does anyone else eat while watching Mark? The guy at the end was funny and memorable 🌻
Yup I had me Wingstop: Cajun and Lemon pepper combo w/ fries. Watching him eat makes my food taste better😅.
Thank you Cindy!
Cooking and eating over there ! 🧅🌶️🧅🌶️🧅🌶️
I do. And i love it
Always save the videos till I eat
To whom wants to visit Taiwan: If you like various types of food and good public transport, then Taipei is your best option. However, as long as you go to southern Taiwan (like Taichung or even Tainan) people there are more friendly, hospitable, and welcoming (just like the shopkeeper in the video.) You can have more street food choices. Mark’s trip arrangement is good because you can enjoy different local foods and customs from northern Taiwan to Southern Taiwan. I would suggest selecting Tainan as your next destination. Thanks for your video. Welcome to Taiwan!!!
I spend 6 months in Changhwa/Zhanghua/彰化 many years ago in my youth. That's the true Taiwan experience with such friendly people and delicious food.
I think you can tell it about most of countries.
@@deanzaZZR Great choice! Zhanghua is a fantastic city to enjoy Taiwanese street foods and local customs.
@@marcinzywy9444 Thanks for your comment. I agree with you. I think the difference might be that Taiwan is rather small, so you can experience different kinds of foods and local customs without spending too much time/cost on transportation.
Thanks for letting all of us know !!
Chen Shacha is one of my favorite hot pot restaurants. Tourists coming to Taichung are highly recommended to go to eat it. In the wintertime, the restaurant is truly packed and queued all the way down the alley.
Also the owner is a funny guy, always interacting with customers, like what he did in the video, even he’s not good at English, but he still tried to sing a bit national anthem.
Great to hear that Antony, I was impressed, really a fantastic place and great environment!
Gordon Ramsay: a little olive oil (pours in half a bottle). Mark Wiens: a little bit of that chilli oil (scoops up half of the cup)
Yeah l am surprise he can have big chunks of chili sauce and be ok. That stuff is strong. I eat it a lot though. I also like it (very) spicy.
😂😂😂😂 it wouldn't be Mark otherwise
NA TA INDIA H BEEF MILE NA PORKK
So nice..👍👍
gordon: a glug of olive oil
also gordon: *pours for 10 seconds*
I stumbled on the second place late one night and it was so packed we had to try it. Best hot pot I’ve had in a long time. The owner chatted to us and every table and even made us his special sauce. Seriously Taiwanese are next level generous and kind.
Thank you Mark for coming to Taiwan, a small and beautiful country! ! Let the world see the great island of Taiwan!
Welcome everyone from all over the world to visit Taiwan
That 2nd hot pot spot would just melt my heart. Looks so homey, with so much variety! And the owner is a total jokester... love it 😂 You can tell Mark liked this place more!
The man actually loves street food style but still appreciates the luxury one ...anyone can tell how much down to earth Mark is.
Lots of love n respect from Pakistan 💚💚
For those who said Mark likes EVERYTHING haha. Clearly, he thought the first place was just okay. If youve watched him long enough, you can tell when he doesn't like something. It's not just the body language or facial expressions, but he also doesn't talk as much
and for the price he paid... the place probably asked him not to film too much or rushed him, or even didn't felt authentic, he usually says something like the staff is so friendly but here not so much.
He gets paid for his reviews so I doubt he would be dissing the place.
Being honest this Taiwan tour has been the best you've ever done.
Love that the guy at the second place knows his English lingo 👌🏼
So happy how much time Mark is spending in Taiwan! And a good friend of mine raved about Taichung, so I'm especially pleased to see this!
So thankful too - thought he might just stick to Taipei like so many other food bloggers. Tainan is the heart of local Taiwanese dishes so hope he's going there too.
@kismet_ yes, would love to see some Tainan content! I'll take as many episodes in this country as I can get 😅
Mark you got us through our quarantine days…every night during dinner your show is what we look forward to…now that pandemic is over, maybe we can finally visit those places in your video! Thank you! Keep doing what you’re doing!
I love all kinds of HOT POT in Taiwan, Taichung have many famous HOT POT restaurants :) the street food Hot Pot 陳沙茶 is famous for "sacha 沙茶醬 sauce" , we will put garlic, soy sauce, green onion, sesame oil, and little chili to make our own sauce for every food. Normally we use two bowls of sacha sauce in one meal ^^
Wow thank you very much for the information!
I'm Taiwanese, this is the first video of your channel I've watched, really appreciate your introduction of street/ luxury hot pot in detail.
The fact that we get free food & travel videos from Mark Wien on UA-cam is truly priceless. 🙏🙏🙏
Mark and family, that was fantastic. I so much want to try hot pot soon. Here in Tennessee I do not see many places but will find a dream hot pot location soon. The owner of the last place was awesome. No wonder people keep him busy. Your wife does such a fantastic job with the camera and your son seems to be so comfortable and well minded everywhere you go. I have been loving your videos for a couple of years now, keep up the great work.
Thank you very much Bill, really appreciate your incredible support over the years. Hope you can try hot pot soon!
This was a really good video. That owner was funny and how Mark rolled with it was awesome. He rolls with all the punches with joy on the videos. Hope he’s like that in real life!!!
Really enjoying the Taiwanese series. Hot pot looks fire. Once again great work.
Really, really great video. I love seeing new things thru your channel!
I don't skip even an advertisement he deserves so much love and support, best part is he is my eating partner,,,,, i watch his videos every time I eat, his first bite is always the most satisfying.
Very interested to see all these Taiwanese hot pot dishes and compare with Korean hot pot, which I'm more familiar with. Makes me realize I really need to spend more time in Taiwan 😅 I was especially wowed by the duck hot pot from two episodes back!
臺灣火鍋種類超多😅
@Infiniti they really do! And we get to enjoy the benefits 🙂
Great video! The boiling "hotpot" sound effect you added made for a more immersive experience as well. Great job.
It's so amazingly friendly. And I love to see you never wasted a food in your dish. Btw, I am big fan of Michael!
I’m from Thailand and we’re known for our food but I wanna try Taiwan food so much. The country got so much food culture.
Taiwan has all Chinese food all together!
@@user-mq8gk5sc5mTaiwan is part of China so they are Chinese.. which obviously makes them Chinese food
Taiwan & Thailand food/people are my favorite much better than japan
@@KissTheR1an Taiwan is NOT a part of China. And the better way to explain this is Chinese food culture is a part of Taiwanese food culture.
@@newclhe One China policy
so excited to hear you trying out food in Taichung! I'm heading there in a week and was saw so much content for Taipei that I was thinking if Taichung was not covered!
We love watching you and learning how best to film and really show the amazing food.
I wouldn’t say I like following anyone, but Mark made something that made me follow this channel 😍 love it 😍
I wish this war in Ukraine is going to finish soon, and I will be able to travel again to taste those foods.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
I am so happy that you showed us the Fancy High end Hot Pot and the regular common Labouters Hot Pot in the same video.
I would treat a Girlfriend to the Fanct Hot Pot for a special occasion. But I love the cheaper alleyway food vendor alternative with authentic flavours.
Mark, you are so amazing and surprise me to go to Taiwan Chen hot pot. That’s my favorite Taiwanese Traditional hot pot which has been open for at least 40 years!!
The best way to make sauce with raw eggs, garlic, soy sauce, green onions, sugar and chili in the sacha !
Glad to know you like this hot pot shop!
great vid as always mark!~
Your son is the luckiest kid in the world. One day he will understand the cultural experiences he is having.
Eating cup noodles while watching this hot pot 😂
Great vid Mark. yeah, that Looks good. That beef looked very lean too.
U interacting with the second restaurant owner was great. Do more of them. So funny he thought u guys are Japanese. Strange, this food practitioner never watched your videos. Hope he will be your next loyal subscriber.
WOW!! A lot of foods to offer!! Delicious chinese cuisine..Great adventure Mark and thanks for sharing
These hot pots look delicious. Thanks for another great Video Mark🥳
🙌🙌🙌🙌love you video
Mark, thank you for share everything.
I’m really enjoy it.
Have a fun trip in Taiwan.
Thank you Maggie for your amazing support!
你來台灣ㄧ定要試試台灣的素食,種類多元又好吃,希望你在台灣期間可以吃的滿意又開心
I’m Taiwanese from Taichung city
I can say the hot pots and barbecue restaurants are the features of Taichung.
And the Chen satay hot pot is in the ancient area of Taichung
I prefer Liu satay hot pot which is just next to this restaurant.
Can't believe Mark is so close to 10M.. keep bringing the amazing videos..
I love hot pot. Mark's video makes Taiwanese style hot pot looks more delicious, the video shooting on the food, the voice from the boiling pot, leads every watcher craving on it.
One of the best episode ❤
Wow, for me this is amazing, I've never seem it like this with the soups. Great idea.
Love the new videos 👍
i'm a real big fan of this new production style you're doing mark, love the more technical analytical approach to your commentary.
Ty mark, yet again, with another spectacular video. Much love from MI to your family💟
He was not too impressed with the first place, but you can tell he loved the second place he went to...
Yes I watch his body language and honestly his facial expressions.
Sign of the times…Bella my 13 year old daughter here in Chiang Mai said nothing during your vlog…then “wow check out those trainers” can’t wait for her to go back to school.
Because they brought the whole steak store... I wonder how much he had to pay just for a video... Lol
@@michaelnewme4567 He's got almost 10 mil subscribers, I'm pretty sure he can afford that meal.
But the second place cost more than the first place.
THANK YOU for going to Taiwan Bro!!! I used to live there studying mandarin many years ago, I MISS TAIWAN!!!!
Thanks for sharing 🙏. I’m drooling with all the scrumptious hot pots you are eating 👍🍲😬!
i luv hot pot (shabu shabu): we do this at home with a fondu pot, friends have done this with portable plate and we have parties
some help shop, others help with chopping and prep other bring desserts.
try also chinese eggplant or butternut squash as well pumpkin
lotus root is good too.
the mushrooms: elephant ears, shihaki
other herbs cilantro

try the fish balls and fish like haddock/ sea bass diced good too
that fish sauce is good with sesame, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar.
at the end usually after eatng all the protient put in noodles and remainder of dipping sauces
You videos are alway informative and entertaining 😍.
Mark, I am a pescatarian now, but I love to watch you enjoy! I live vicariously through your adventures. I miss traveling to Asia. The second restaurant is where I would want to be! Thanks for sharing!
and...SPICE RULES!😂
Mark good to see you coming back to you roots 🙌🏿
Mark definitely liked the small shop over the big expensive $1k hot pot restaurant.
Incredible food and thanks for making this video showing us🤩🙏
Wow! What a food tour!
Everything that Mark tasted seems soooo yummy 😂😂😂😂
So nice video Thank you so much Mark
I would love to try hot pot except here in the states it’s so expensive. Plus I’m in Ks and there’s not a lot of places here. This is why I love Marks videos because I can live vicariously through him. Great video. I always look forward to Marks videos and if there’s no new ones I get caught up on all the previous ones
Thank you very much Frannie!
In the states, my taiwanese friends will buy local groceries and make their own hotpot at home
Never forget that you can just add the options from the condiment bar into your hotpot broth. I love adding extra cilantro and chili oil in mine typically.
Awesome episode Mark 👊🏼😎🤙🏼, Cheers from California
We grew up doing the Taiwanese style hot pot at home. But in US, we just used a big slow cooker to keep the soup hot. At the end of the meal, the soup becomes very complicated in flavor and you are supposed to drink it.
Mark, that sauce at the 2nd place is "sacha", which is a common base sauce for hot pot in Taiwan. You don't use it alone (I mean by all means do whatever you want but most people don't do that). You put it in your mixed sauce. It adds so much more flavors to the sauce.
@@ilovecracklins6397 Not sure what you mean? Sacha and satay are two different sauces.
@@ilovecracklins6397 no
it's totally different sauce
@@ilovecracklins6397 No worries. I'm not certain about that origin but if it was modified, it was modified to suit Taiwanese taste. It's a Taiwanese sauce. Chinese don't eat hot pot with sacha, though I'm sure it's now available in some places in China, too.
@@ilovecracklins6397 Just looked it up. You are correct. It was modified from satay!
@@ilovecracklins6397 Just read a little more and you are actually correct again. It was originated in southern China. But the Taiwanese version has another twist to it. Ohhhhhh, how things evolve, modification after modification. 😂
Amazingly delicious, especially when you get into that little Backstreet alley where it's authentic and not overhyped with modernistic complexities
The owner of the 2nd restaurant is also very humorous...😀😃😄👏👏👏
Your videos always make me hungry. Hot pot in Taiwan looks super delicious!! I’m going to eat Hot pot tomorrow!!!
The place we go to here in Philly is $40 per person for all you can eat hotpot and BBQ. High quality meats and they have a huge variety of items. I don’t think I could ever go to a hotpot place where it’s not all you can eat 🤣
Hope to meet you at Kaohsiung someday, where would be really satisfying , keep it up Mark!
He is so down to earth. I love seeing other countries and their food he let's me see both sides.
👍👍😋😋Welcome to Taichung! You have chosen a good street hot pot with fresh ingredients.
the street hot pot looks so delicious !!
Love your videos! You really know lots of food lol
Hot Pot, Soup Dumplings, and Beef Noodle Soup are basically our versions of “Soul Food”.
That looks delicious 😋
I will never get tired of oh wow!! One love respect
Love his excitement
man, I am Taiwanese living abroad. Can't stand watching the video, it is so mouthwatering good and making me homesick instantly damnnn! little pro-tip, if the beef quality is good, make sure it is cooked only medium or medium-well max, never well-done :D
I really love the hot pot concept, very social setting 👌
Amazing energy
Love it!!
My husband and I have watched all your videos.. good luck with your upcoming videos
You surely know all the great places to eat anywhere you go! Watching from California your silent viewer! More power.🌹🌹🌹
火鍋特好吃😋讚讚
Yay hotpot 🤣🔥
*taking notes* 🍲
wow that looked so good! when i begin traveling seriously im going to have to go to every restaurant you went to :)
Yummy!!! I'm going to copy and do my own hotpot! Looks so good!!!
love it. I think the fried beancurd only needs a few seconds for its optimal taste and texture😄
Your videos are pretty additive !! Food looks so good !
Thank you!
@@MarkWiens I’m going to have hotpot tomorrow in Flushing , New York ! I’ve watched your video in Flushing, New York about 8 years ago 😂
Mark Wiens when he takes a bite out of anything edible:
🙂😃😖😮😯😳😄
Mark, you are overcooking the beef, the perfect state would be still a little pink, and it's safe to eat it like that in Taiwan. Please try it again and you will experience another level.
a hot pot restaurant would be great in my country. again Mark loving your videos..
it's just boiling broth. your country doesn't have boiling broth?
YUMMY , Looks So Good!!!
I like food there, thank you so for sharing
the food is delicious, thank you for the very good introduction to asian cuisine👌🤩😋😋😋😋😋
It was the Gucci face mask for me!!! 😂
