    The thing I would of done different is give the spring a good coat of clock spring grease. Best not to handle with bare fingers as it can hasten corrosion. Use gloves on all cleaned clock parts to prevent the moisture from your fingers getting onto the metal. Sometimes you see corrosion on the minute hands were people touch the hand to adjust the time. Good old butler's and house keepers who were responsible for winding and setting clocks wore cloth gloves.

      I totally agree with you, any clock or watch part shouldnt be touched with bare fingers. I do sometimes get lazy even though to do have finger gloves.

    I just received my aliexpress set. I got it with the box and instructions. However on step 10 of the very first bag I am missing the half circle piece and the swivel pieces. Step 11 you need the same three pieces so I’m missing those 6. Unless they’re in another bag. But I’ve opened the big first bag which had a bunch of smaller bags inside. Did anyone else have a similar issue?

      Sometimes the parts needed run into other bags. The instructions are from the original Lego handbook but the way Ali Express pack the parts doesnt correlate with the instruction booklet. Hope that helps

      I'm just under a third of the way through the build, so far I am missing the 2 black 1x2 curved pieces that go under the anchor chains on the sides of the ship, one of the black Titanic name plates(could clearly see in the small bag that only one was present, I received only 7 male(dark grey) swivel pieces(no female parts) so I substituted white to continue building, there are zero tan swivel pieces to be found( I scanned ahead in the book to see where more swivels are needed). This is where I am so far, will update again as the build continues. Will be Brick Linking whatever I need but just sharing my experience for information purposes.

    I love that bumper! As someone commented, a small dark velour material on the yellow wheel arch section in the boot. You should have painted the area behind the grill black as was original, possibly hand brushed on. I only found your TR6 videos yesterday, you did a great job on the interior! I am rebuilding my old '71, which has been sitting in my garage for 40 years. I rebuilt the chassis and suspension, but the body, which did not look that bad was way worse than I knew.

    • @treetopspider
      @treetopspider 2 місяці тому

      To be honest, it didnt even occur to me about the black behind the grill but I do get it. Most of the trouble with these old cars is not what you see, its what you uncover...I was surprised by how much rust was underneath the paintwork of mine. Then when I scraped off the underseal in the wheel arches I was totally deflated. But having said that, It was nice knowing I rebuilt the car and hopefully last another 50 years

    A little help, take a claw-hammer and lay it across the tread of the tire when prying off the second bead. Use your pry bar across the hammer just behind the hammers head where it chokes down towards the handle. Using that divot helps keep the bar from sliding and increases the area of applied pressure to a larger area of the tire. The longer the pry bar the easier it is to use and you reserve the energy for the rest of the tires and project. As a city teen transplanted to the country, I had to learn tire patching. It sucks and I’ll pay to have it done if I can, but I still do it when I have to. Fun fact, the higher the sidewall of a tire, the easier it is to take off and put on. New subscriber.

      Hi, I am glad the video was useful to you. I do go through polishing of slate clocks in one of my videos. Thank you for the video. I’ve just completed the AliExpress Titanic (not predicated on this video) and like you, found the experience to be excellent. The package arrived in about a week. It had 23 large numbered bags in it, which matched the 23 major stages in the instruction booklet. Everything went together well and there were no missing parts. You are right about the instructions though - the copy version, being much condensed, makes distinguishing some small parts really difficult. The PDF would have been better, although I reverted to using the Lego App as all the parts and colours were in the pack I got were pretty much identical. So, following initial concerns (about whether it would be delivered, whether there would be problems - all of which were unfounded), I have no regrets and am delighted with the end result. Like you, I’m looking for the next now. Thanks again…

    I absolutely love your presentation on the main spring winder. I have converted your dimensions into inches since I live in California and most of the materials here are in inches. Can you suggest what sizes of mainspring capture sleeves I should fabricate? I will be disassembling my 1919 Junghans mantle clock movement and plan to fabricate a mainspring capture sleeve/can for the time and chime springs and I'm not sure what I should start with for diameters of raw material. Thanks so much for your presentation and for braving the freezing cold temperatures you experience in the winter there. Timm

      Hi Timm Thank you for your kind comment. Without going back out into my cold workshop, I seem to remember 30mm as a dimension. Although I have since butchered a few different items and made a few sizes according to my needs. Ideally if you have clear access to the mainspring case and take a measurement minus the thickness of the wall. I always wondered if there was a way to make an adjustable spring capture. I'm sure there must be a way. Best of luck Johnny

    This video has really helped me. I'm restoring a French movement at the moment with a spring similar to the one you are using. I have two questions. I didn't see you oil the spring. Was that something you did off camera? The other thing is, I didn't see how you measured the length of the spring. Did you simply stretch it out over a table and put a ruler over it, or did you use Daniel's formula?

    • @treetopspider
      @treetopspider 3 місяці тому

      Hi, I did oil the spring off camera by simply wiping some oil along the length of the spring with a little leather offcut I keep. Although any lint free rag or tissue will do. To measure the length, I did stretch it out on my desk as thats the only way I am confident of. Johnny

    nice car and not too much rust on the sills by the look of things although beauty is only skin deep so you might need to get a magnet at the suill areas to see how good they really are...floor looks passable but many would replace the entire floor when it looks like this....first time i restored my tr6 40 years ago i just slopped fibreglass all over the floor and this was fine...but now as an old lad i have higher standards so just replaced floors sills and many other panels...all suspension bushings, bearings, disks....you name it.. six thousand pounds and that is not even an engine restore (mine was done 40 years ago and not really drivem much since so engine is ok). all in all the tr6 is my favorite classic and i will eventually convert mine to electric if the old petrol classics happen to be outlawed. My advice to you is to fibreglass those rust holes in wings and other places and cover it up so you can make it beautiful with little cost...and then you can enjoy it as it has not cost a bomb.......no matter what way you do it for yours you are looking at a minimum of around 5K to get it on the road looking at suspension and paint....they are expensive to own and resela value is rubbish these days. Great you are taking the challenge on. enjoy

    • @treetopspider
      @treetopspider 3 місяці тому

      Ive restored a few cars over the years. Mostly they have been light restorations. With this one, I decided to completely cut out all the rust I found and weld in new plates. There was a Hell of a lot of welding to do. If you've followed the whole series, you would have seen me stitch my own leather interior too. I ended up spending 6k on parts to put this back together. Unfortunately, during the 9 months it took me to restore, the prices plummeted so when I sold it, I just about got all my money back plus a drink on top. Definitely couldn't make a living from doing restorations

    Literally finished my genuine Lego titanic last night other than getting it in the Lego box in the 3 stages makes me wonder what I spent that extra £500 on!? I can’t see much difference to yours at all it’s so identical! Only thing I did notice is the random white brick on the rudder but other than that brilliant it’s a joy to build! Already got the light kit to go in now too!

      Its a shame that Lego dont reduce the price of their kits to make them more affordable. I've just finished the Ferrari Daytona SP3 kit from AliExpress (uploaded vid) again, its a fantastic piece of kit which only cost me £60 delivered compared to £320 in the shops here. Aside from that, isnt it an amazing satisfying hobby? The lights are really going to set it off.

    You could always download the instructions in pdf from the Lego website ? Free. I have been buying with paper book instructions but using the lego pdf on the PC to build due to the ability to zoom in on certain sections is very helpful.
