    Probably not going to recoup the initial cost in savings. Todays air to air heat pump efficiencies have made huge strides and initial costs way lower. Better bang for the buck. Not to mention the leaking water pipes after a few years and depending on the handler, increased microbial growth in the fan and coil housing, so if you do install a heat pump system, make sure to address the probability of microbial growth in the coil and fan area of the system to keep your home healthy.

    It would seem to be easier to reach net zero with a passive house as it requires less of everything. One could extend that principle to other areas, say water use by collecting grey water from those fixtures that would qualify and then use that water to flush toilets, as an example. Air to air heat exchangers would/should be required for an passive house as they are so airtight and would need fresh air. Passive houses also could incorporate passive solar heating designs which require nothing to operate and provide a portion of the energy to heat/light the house. Good video, thank you.

    Net Zero is the opposite of traditional environmental responsibility. It is the complete greenwashing of corporate and government corruption behind a sophisticated ideological scheme that is narrowing our vision and limiting out ability to truly deal with the real problems: environment destruction and toxification. Your Carbon Footprint was a phrase developed by BP and the adopted by the bankers and global finance backing the UN climate agenda.

    • @NetZeroTech
      @NetZeroTech Місяць тому

      Thank you. I fully agree. I also discussed the terms net zero and carbon footprint in other videos including the fact that BP introduced the term carbon footprint. I think these are just horizontal terms and they can be used for positive impact or for avoidance strategy. Just like the internet or smartphones are horizontal technologies that can be used for positive impact or for kitty cats (increasing emissions by pure existence). So, how do we scale traditional environmental responsibility and get people on board, who don't want to pay a premium for it? Would using other terms be helpful? Thank you! Katha

    I'm a fan of the channel. Interested in changing from natural gas forced air heat/portable air conditioner(Hisense) to electrical heat pump system. So far it's cost prohibitive. Also want to be able to survive off-grid with solar panels/storage batteries because we live in western Washington state where we are due to have a 9-point-on the Richter Scale earthquake. BTW, the audio in all your videos has a problem reproducing S's. Everytime you say a word with an S in it, it breaks up. Are you recording your audio at 44.1 khz or 48 khz? If you are, consider getting a De-esser plugin (or hardware De-esser) for audio recording or post-processing. Don't get the cheapest one, you get what you pay for. It is difficult to reproduce S's cleanly. Especially female vocal. Perhaps a better quality microphone would help? Don't mean to criticize, just trying to be helpful. I've fought the S's problem for years recording vocalists/bands.

    This is an excellent commercial for alternate energy schemes but hardly a balanced systems engineering approach to decision making. For instance, should an 83 year old person "invest" in a systems with high up front costs? Its likely that the resale value of the house would not recover the investment. Second, and the most glaring omission is the projected life cycle costs. These ignore the very low reliability of various components and the necessary maintenance and replacement over the entire life cycle. It would be a mistake to ignore the downward spiral of compressor reliability and the switch to hazardous propane as a refrigerant that is lower in efficiency. The presentation suggests that once you pay off the initial cost that you are cost free thereafter. This is of course a marketing mind game that has been used many times in history so hopefully those considering investing will be more careful in evaluating their situation. Finally, consider obsolescence due to EPA mandates. In ten years your system may be declared irreparable. This is not a small risk.

    • @NetZeroTech
      @NetZeroTech Місяць тому

      Great points. Depends on the goal of the 83 year old person. If we're talking purely financially for themselves, some might invest in it for their kids. Geothermal heat pumps are common in Sweden where 45% of the electricity comes from cheap hydropower. Air-to-air heat pumps have not been documented to commonly save fueling costs over natural gas furnaces in the USA. Heat pumps pull significant amounts electricity and they do that when the electric grid is already being heavy stressed by cold weather.

    There is no mechanism that would allow greenhouse gas behavior to cause global warming. Global warming was officially stated at 1.1°C in 1991 and 1.06°C in 2022. The back of the United Nation's IPCC science report states it took its greenhouse gas samples at 20,000 meters altitude where it is common high school level knowledge there is no greenhouse radiant energy. This is typical practice for deceptive marketing to state legal data transparency protecting the perpetrators from fraud prosecution. Earth's greenhouse effect is frequently used as a primary example to high school students of a system always in saturation from the strong greenhouse gas water vapor absorbing all the greenhouse radiant energy from the earth with greenhouse gases within 20 meters of the surface that is all around us everyday and can't have its overall effect changed. There is no further greenhouse radiant energy to interact with greenhouse gases. At 1% average tropospheric water vapor over 99% of earth’s greenhouse effect is from water vapor. Water vapor would hold earth's greenhouse effect in saturation if it were the only greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. Arctic warming is taking place with the proving mechanism being warm Atlantic Ocean waters migrating deeper and more frequently into the Arctic Ocean warming it and the region. That warmer water is causing a few weeks less of reflective snow and ice coverage resulting in more solar heat gain to the Arctic region surface. Atmospheric CO2 levels of 1200 ppm about three times what they are today would greatly invigorate C3 plants the majority of plant life on earth greatly greening the planet. 0.4% of the atmosphere is CO2 and on average 1% is H20 water vapor. (1% H20)/(0.4% CO2) = 25. Water vapor is 25 times more present in the atmosphere on average than CO2. Water vapor has an CO2e of 18, 18 X 25 = 450 CO2e total for water vapor to 1 CO2e for CO2. The Earth’s oceans have 3-1/2 million sea floor volcanic vents warming the water and changing it’s chemistry that have not been systematically accounted for.

      Hello Douglas, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and looking into the subject. If this is on the rational level, this link might be helpful: www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-24021772 I suspect this is on the emotional level. In this case, it is not economically viable for me to provide the treatment needed. It might help you to keep an open mind as to why it is important for you to make this statement here. Feel hugged if it helps, Katha 🤗

    Yeah, building codes in North America don't seem to be pointed towards efficiency or innovation :(

      While, building standards could be higher all over North America to serve owners and tennants, most Canadian houses at least seem to be a bit better insulated. Regarding code, for instance, Canada has higher r-value requirements for wood. Thanks for sharing! 🙏 Katha 😀

    In addition to saving money in the long run, air sealing and adding insulation to home will make it more comfortable. You will feel it every day.

    Great Video. We are currently using almost all these insulation types except cellulose. Good to know. Insulation makes a huge savings on cooling and heating a home.

    In certain areas of the US, older homes (built before 1930) may still have knob and tube wiring. These wires need to be in free air to keep from overheating and causing a fire. Before blowing insulation into walls or attics the old wires need to be upgraded. Contractors wanting a simple way to demonstrate inadequate insulation to customers can purchase a modest priced attachment for a smartphone. (Less than $200) It will turn your camera into an infrared imaging device. (Made by Fluke) Areas of poor insulation will be readily visible on the screen of the phone.

      Interesting! Thank you very much for sharing! 🙏 Yes, the attachment is a great one. Renting an infra red camera at a home improvement store should be even less expensive, if you don't need it that often. Hope things are well with you! 😀Katha

      My daughter just bought a 1884 non-insulating house in St Paul Mn. I am a maintenance guy at a medium sized manufacture, so I am somewhat skilled at doing these jobs. I redid the pressure side of plumbing and am in the middle of pulling the lath/plaster and rockwooling the bathroom. I will be using Intelo Plus for my advance vapor barrier. The ONLY way to go in these old old houses if you insulate them. I THEN found out the house was still using 75% of the second level on knob and tube (SURPRISE) and 30% on the main level. I followed a run of wires to the second level ceiling run and there was the main run of knob and tube, ALL live with my wire tone tool. The basement was conduit-ed and 60's breaker box "showed" it was rewired. It fooled me and everyone else. I was going to add 4 to 5 20 amp runs for my daughter's 3D printing business, but NOW I will be rewiring the whole house. I did see some signs when changing a bedroom light as it had 16 gauge wiring and not even 14 gauge. I thought it was just cheap 2 wire that was in my own 1949 house , but all my 2 wire was 12-14 gauge. Turns out knob and tube can and uses in most cases 16 to 14 gauge wire even for outlets. So we are at 10 amp draw MAX use of outlets, till I rewire. I can't trust the 1940's install of two outlets with "Greenfield/BX" style wire that it doesn't go back to a 16 gauge knob and tube wire.

      Wow, sound like a solid retrofit. Let me know if you'd like to hop on the show sometime to explain it. Thank you for doing all this work! I installed wall-mounted resistance heaters and we should upgrade the main breaker panel some time as we added two EVs over the years and would like to add a heat pump for hot water.

    @Net Zero Tech, Thanx for eastern Massachusetts seasonal load graph at time stamp 5:59, I will be lowering switchover temp next heating season from 40°F to 30°F for my dual fuel (air HP/ducted gas fired) system. Info so helpful. Next big step for my system will be Summer cooling here on Cape Cod. You’re doing great job and service!

      I didn't go into hemp, because it's less common. Would love to do a video on hemp and maybe straw. Dennis uses hemp at his new build. Would be curious what your thoughts are on hemp insulation as insulation nuts 😂, Ronnie and Diane. ua-cam.com/video/htLappYdUcw/v-deo.html
