I have a air to air heat pump furnace installed in Wisconsin two years ago. Works great. I also have several minisplit systems installed in the house and my shop. I am just finishing up installation of a 57KW solar off grid system to power it all.

@@NetZeroTech I am not good at the video stuff. I am good with my hands, lol. My daughter and I did all the work. Lots of time and money but we made some great memories while putting it all together.

R290 monoblocks are a game changer for ATW heat pumps in cold climates. They outperform R410a, a high GWP refrigerant, and consume less energy because the pressure cycle is much lower energy. North America is way behind Europe and Asia in adopting this remarkable technology. Add solar PV and batteries/Or net metering and and R290 yearly cost can be near zero.

What do you think of R744 (co2)? I jumped in early on the cold weather whole house heat pump. No tax rebates at all when I did it 2 years ago. Now I want to do a air to water system to use my in floor heat, and add water storage (water battery) for my solar. Heat during the day, use excess at night. Very early in the game in the USA.

That sounds great. I think CO2 as a refrigerant is the way to go. 😀

@@NetZeroTech Transcritical CO2 is too complex for small systems like houses. The pressures are very high so the compressor and evaporator and condenser have to be built to higher pressure ratings. On top of these problems that make it more expensive to manufacture, there is another risk associated with CO2 systems that don't exist with other refrigerants. If any point in the system experiences a pressure/temperature/control instrument failure, you can make dry ice inside the system if the pressure drops and destroy the expensive compressor. R290 on the other hand has a very low GWP, runs at much lower pressures and the equipment will last much longer. R290 will also run in cold climates down to -35C, much better than R410a. Lower compression ratios = more electrically efficient and that translates into higher COP.

Agreed that the system needs to be designed to the specific refrigerant. Thank you for sharing. 🙏 Companies like Harvest Thermal use CO2 as a refrigerant for small systems like houses.

Thank you for the kind words and thank you for watching! Well, if you get stuck, let me know: katha@upheatacademy.com
It can take some time. At least you don't have to move quickly, because your system is down.
