Myth-Busting Rod Bolts and Rod Re-Sizing
What piece of history! Congrats, Beautiful Notch.💪
Did you use anti seize on the bolts?
Only on ford . Because I just installed a set of arp in my vortec 5.7 chevy and I had no destortion.
What if you only put standard new rod bolts? Do you still need resizing the bore?
If everything is within spec to start with, then stock bolts with stock torque should not cause any further distortion that would require a resize.
How many ugga duggas in a 10th?
Now after having the big end resized. Is it necessary to go with a “larger” OD bearing?
No. Cap surfaces are machined first, then it's machined round back to spec.
Ive only built two sbc 350's my machinist did the new bolts and resizing. If i was installing new bearings and wanted to replace the rod bolts with new ones, would there be any alignment issues between the rod and cap? Or does the process of installing and torquing force the parts to align? Great demo and explanation. 👍
Some rods use dowels, but for most rods, the caps register on the bolts for alignment, so it's important to resize the rods with the new bolts at the correct torque.
Nice coupe! What was the et that car ran?
It varied depending on the altitude, class, category and race vs street setups. Anywhere from mid 11s to mid 12s.
@UCypGHIShGxcuMIjJ89s7SCg That’s really good for stockish car!
When I switched from stock Toyota rod (stock torque) bolts to ARP (spec stretch) and what do you know the big ends had to be resized. Small price to pay for the added clamping force the stronger ARP bolts. Stock bottom end - why waste money on ARP?
If the rules require stock rods....
Blah blah work on the car
If you use the same torgue, then there should be no differance am I right?
There still could be a dimensional difference (thread friction could be different), but likely a lot less. But then you don't get the added clamping force advantage, so...
Really nice work on that starter repair. Love the step-by-step content. Look forward to more. Be safe and stay well.
Good to see that your battery leads have been converted to top posts. I've done similar to mine, combining a shut off switch for convenience. The side post batteries are an unnecessary struggle in that tight space. Look forward to seeing more.
Nice it a stick ? you could push started it !! looks good Ed you take to track to see how fast it goes ? no word on what happen to SPPTV ?
Of course it's a stick. No idea why SPPTV don't post videos anymore.
Doesn't sound stock to me.
Some people collect stamps.....
Going to have to watch this again with my dyno graph out and spread sheet open!
Keep it up!
Cars... Building them, working on them, driving them, tuning them, drag racing them, breaking them, improving them, dragging them, breaking them, fixing them.... It's all interesting no matter the make. Keep doing what you want to do.
What engine and horsepower??
467 stroker, 525 HP.
Still going strong I see. 10000 rpm with your hair on fire! Oh wait...
I do like the Mustang(s), but follow because all the topics are interesting. And the videos are always done well. Fond memories those '69 Vettes. First year of the new body style. Back when big=block and 4-speed was king. Older brother of my best friend owned one and it was a blast tearing around in it. Looked identical to yours. Look forward to more on this sweet ride. Be safe and stay well.
That thing is awesome
nice clean ride, but personally Ed, the Epic gets the thumbs up from me...
The ending made me laugh for sure. Cool car
Geez mate, you have great taste! A Viva GT AND a C3 Corvette! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, and great to see the Viva still lurking in the background.
Thank you for the video, it's very educational. Can you please tell me which clutch brand / model was used in the video? Can you please make a video going over the calculus portion? Are you available for consultation on clutch related subjects in the future, and if yes, what's the best method to reach out?
Pressure plate was a McLeod Soft Lok. Disc was Ram 4135. I'm not a clutch consultant, maybe contact Rob Youngblood at Advanced Clutches or talk to the manufacturers. The calculus is shown on the board at 16:45, if I made a detailed video about that I'd probably lose subscribers ;)
Priceless ending! 😂
Nice Corvette, nice project. Looking forward to it. Dress accordingly.😆
Nice vette and great ending 🤣🤣
That’s a tasty treat
nice vette ED !!!!!
basicly u r stress'n the rod past what it was desigined to do...!..NHRA & there rules...
I think resizing the rod bearings would have to be on of the the riskier jobs in the balancing process. I can see why so many people go out and just buy expensive high-quality I-BEAMS or H-BEAMS because the risk is so much lower that everything will be right.
Click bait title- You may find this hard to believe, but not all vehicle suspensions are set up the same. Also, real cars use shims and have automatics.
A dial bore gauge is better !
Why not get it as perfect as possible, then you can sleep at night !
I saw your GTO at world of wheels. I wanted to talk to you and ask you a few EEC Tweecer tuning questions but you were busy with someone else. Any idea how much ethanol is used in our Premium gas now? E10?
Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you at WoW. My understanding is that 10% of all gasoline sold in Manitoba must be ethanol. Previous to 2022, that number was 9.25%, which allowed premium to still be pure gasoline. Since the 10% is an overall average, specific fuels could be slightly above or below that number. You'd need to test each fuel (and each seasonal blend) to determine exactly what ethanol content it has.
Omg what a boring show plus what a nerd. Oh and i want to point something out. ARP bolts on the rods you dont need to put them unless you putting aftermarket rods also so all this was a waste of time and money
The other question of operations, is did you leave one torqued and then change one. Retorque and change the other? Or just knock them out? That is what I have read makes the difference. When un supported you can spread the rod when forcing bolt in and out. So may have been an idea to attempt both ways, measure an alignment pin and clamp together? Takes three points to prove a line?
A-B-A comparison. See the pinned comment.
glad too see ya back makin videos
Great to see you back Ed. Here in Maine, I always add Stabil Ethanol neutralizer at every fill up to my '64 Fairlane and that seems to do the trick.
Hello Ed nice to see again ya buddy..
Nice.👌
Hello Ed. I’ve got a tri power set up for a Buick with Rochester carbs. I’ve not run it since I imported it. So this video is really helpful. I tend to take photos as I go as my memory is getting worse. Any way thanks for the tips. Tim from England.
Loved the Feature-Length installment. Hoping for future Monolith content. 🤞
Welcome back Ed !!!! better stock up on premium gas our pipeline in Manitoba is shutdown for 3 months ? What happen to SPPTV ?
Question. So to resize you have to have 2 sets of arps, one to resize one to install???
No, they're not torque to yield, so you can reuse them.
I think a lot of that funky data in the first .5 seconds is your hitting the tire to hard. Have you plotted out your antisquat? If not I’d do that next and see where it’s at. You could also tighten up your extension but I always try and get the suspension close so the shock doesn’t have to do all the work.
Solid advice, thanks. I did plot the IC years ago, and it's not in a bad place. The shocks are maxed out on rebound tightness, and are only single adjustable. Watching slo-mo video, I can see it hits the tires a bit too hard, then they bounce and it unloads the tires from not having enough compression damping. I really need to buy better shocks...
Yeah definitely could be shocks. What do you have for shocks?
@@raymondleathers5921Konis from the Ford Motorsport catalogue back in 1987!
Oh boy, you definitely need an upgrade there 😆
Right on t5 for life
LOL, the life of a T5 isn't long. I run a Doug Nash race 5 speed trans.
