    And talking about hiding something to make it appear stock. Back in the 80's I built an engine for a stock car for racing on a dirt track. Rules said we had to run a 2 bbl carb, stock exhaust and flat top pistons. I owned an automotive machine shop at the time so I used a 400 small block, de-stroked it with a 350 crank, bored it .030 over. I had a set of double hump heads with 2.02 valves. I ported the heads and a stock 2 bbl intake to get maximum flow. I used a 500 Holley 2 bbl carb. But the trick I did was to angle mill .125 off of the exhaust side of the heads and to nothing on the intake side. I had to mill the intake also to match the changed angle of the heads. I can't tell you how much this raised the compression ratio but that engine was one of the best combinations I ever built. It would scream. I raced it in a 77 Camaro in 16 races and took 1st place 15 of the 16. It would have won 16 out of 16 but I was in lap traffic and they spun me out. By the time I got it restarted and back in the race, one car barely beat me to the finish line. I was offered way more than I thought it was worth after that so I got out of the circle track business....

    I bought a car from a guy a few years ago. He told me one of his businesses was casting exact replicas of factory small block Ford heads in aluminum. Once they were painted he said the only way to tell was with a magnet. His customers were classic racers that were required to run factory heads. They wanted aluminum for the weight advantage and took the chance nobody would magnet test them. Those guys had high end classic race cars and had money to burn on cheater heads.

    Seems I always see something that reminds me of a story or experience I had. I was building an awesome 455 Pontiac for my 77 Trans Am. I had a set of ram air IV heads but didn't know what I was going to do on the exhaust side of them. While I was putting everything together, a friend came by and asked me if I was interested in buying a set of Hooker headers to fit these heads and car. I told him sure but they were way too much and I was going to have to figure something else out when the time came. He went out to his truck and came back with a brand new set of Hooker headers that he had just bought at a garage sale. He said an old man had them and didn't even know what they were much less what they fit. He offered the old man $10. dollars for them and the old man couldn't take his money fast enough. My friend brought them straight over to my shop and I tried to double his money on them but he insisted he only wanted what he paid for them.... How blessed can you get!!!!!

    I really appreciate the information. Many years ago when I was a kid I use to hang around a fellows shop that had a record holding Chev Monza . I think he told me that aluminum heads were good for a .5 compression ratio as far as pulling heat out of the chambers and being able to increase compression. If you don't mind going into the chamber design about quench and how different designs are better for detonation control . As far as I know cylinder head flow is key to making hp , The aluminum aftermarket heads must have given you a real advantage in making hp and earlier tq . I like to run solid roller lifters so I can change the lash and see what the motor responds to

    • @The_Performance_Laboratory
      @The_Performance_Laboratory  3 роки тому +2

      I spend almost 2 weeks on combustion theory, with my lecture on detonation over an hour long just itself, so I can't cover much in a comment here. But, in general for NA engines, greater charge turbulence (from swirl, tumble or squish) will create a faster burn, which will be more resistant to detonation. Thanks for watching.

      NHRA tech inspection of cylinder heads used to be very thorough when I raced in Stock. They could detect even just mild acid porting in the stock heads/intakes, so extremely unlikely that someone could get away with different heads disguised as stock. I like to use non corrugated cardboard, like cereal boxes since I don't eat frozen pizza. I'm going to have to do this for the round ports on the 461 in my 68 LeMans.. its a sleeper. I'm doing a low buck 'Judge" clone with it, but I am going to make the graphics say The Jerk. Ya know the chevy guys don't know the difference, they can't tell a 301 from an IAII block with RAV heads. That means all my cars re 301 powered of course. I might tack a dipstick tube behind the drivers side head just to pass it off easier.

To mix with gasoline you need a molecular sieve to get all the water out, and that adds expense to it. You still can mix it, but it will separate from the gasoline.
      VERY simple to make fuel, but it takes some space, apartments are not going to allow for much fuel, and of course the legal issues involved. I'm in far northern Michigan, south shore of Lake Superior, we get lots of people from Ontario and Alberta driving though here.
      Its sad Canada doesn't have the cheap race fuel at the pump like we do. It burns clean too, so if you run E100 in a fresh engine, it never gets the black carbon clogging everything.
      I got into making fuel and running E85 when gasoline was $5 a gallon here, no way I could afford to drive with it that high. Last summer E85 was $1.89, so it was cheap to fill three barrels with it. Maybe you could cross the border and fill up a tank in the bed of a pickup. If you do you want to wait until June so you get the highest % of ethanol.
      I'm working on a basic video giving information on the fuel itself, and because of people converting carbs I can only give a basic conversion other than Qjets. It would be uncool of me to give away the secrets Mark Sullens has for his Holley and Demon carbs. I can give people a starting point, and how to hit the AFR that gives best power or best mileage.
      Trying to have it done in a day or so. It takes me a while because I am new to the video editing and narration thing.

    The "money shot" of the casting code at 4:54 was a real let down after all the buildup. Use plumber's putty or silicone to make a mold of the original casting numbers including the casting pad. Cast your own pad with numbers using JB Weld in the mold and adhere to the head with JB Weld after the cast part is cured. Wayyyy more realistic looking. Nice job on the ends of the heads though.

    • @The_Performance_Laboratory

      Some of my friends have done exactly as you described, to fake casting codes on cooler parts like intake manifolds, so that was my original plan too. But the high heat JB weld putty that I had to use on the hot exhaust ports didn't work well when I tried to "cast it".

    It’s funny all I did was paint some AFR heads Chevy orange just so it wasn’t so blatantly obvious and was scolded by most as they claim that the paint will hinder the advantage of aluminum heads on heat displacement. I didn’t agree and really didn’t care as I use race gas additive to keep my octane levels around 100 octane,it’s a little pricey but it’s cheaper then straight up race gas and the stuff ya get out the pump isn’t all that anyhow and with only 12:3.1 compression it’s not like I even need 112 octane. I like the whole factory look and it makes it fun when ya butter someone’s eye and they just sit confused on what just happened!
