Metro Exodus, Or How To Do Open-World Right | Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition Review | thesummerofmark
Exodus is the third mainline entry in the Metro series, and follows Artyom and his crew of Spartan rangers as they flee the Moscow Metro and journey through post-apocalyptic Russia and Kazakhstan on a locomotive called Aurora. The objective: connect with the alleged remnants of the former Russian government in the Ural mountains and find a cozy, ideally radiation and mutant free spot on the surface where they can start rebuilding civilization from scratch. Of course, that’s easier said than done, as shit hits the fan not 5 minutes after fleeing Moscow. First, the locomotive breaks near the Volga river, where the rangers encounter and fight a Lovecraftian-coded technophobic cult; near the dried-out Caspian sea, a vicious warlord has assumed control of the area’s remaining water and oil reserves; as for the remnants of the Russian government, well, I’ll save that for later.
Exodus might seem like a huge departure from the series’ core tenets, but it’s not that big a departure as some would think.
So let’s dive in and see what Exodus is about.

    In the book the whole reasoning for keeping the metro locked down is so much weirder. It's basically vault tec on crack. Also all the major factions are involved, to the point the stalkers shoot red line civilians at a rally to create an uprising to keep war going. Reading metro 2035 feels like dreaming and doings drugs at the same time

    Hello, Mark! I bought the game on Steam after seeing your review a few months ago. A bit late with the comment, but I wanted to thank you for the recommendation. Blood West is a very cool game. I've done two playthroughs. I've read the notes left by the farmer, but I'll leave your riddle unanswered, as it is part funny, part creepy. The devs are nice and helpful. I got stuck on when I tried to melee the 2nd act boss and its stomp attack pushed me through the map. The devs fixed the issue by editing my save file. Anyway, great review and good luck with your UA-cam channel. Since you are a Gothic fan, I was wondering if you played "The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos" mod for Gothic 2?

    The great thing about this series is it just kept getting better and every game has something great about it, like the bear in the 2nd one, the librarians in the first, or the excellent setpieces in exodus. I also dont want to watch this whole thing because I'm on Stalker right now and I know I'll just get hooked in a bad way for so many hours if I play even a little bit. Metro is such a special series. Glad to see you covering it. Seems like a very "you" set of games :)

    Great game! Loved the weapons customization and the way you could field strip an enemy weapon. Really put me in that scavenger mindset, in addition to all the other useful upgrades like the NVGs etc. I hope that there will be a sequel to that, but not with Artyom. Maybe much later? At a time where most of the Moscow population has exited the metro? That would be cool!

    The best part about that stupid show is that in its red hot streak of picking the most basic bitch shooting locations in Bucharest [the kind you'll invariably find in "top 10 places to visit in the city" tourist guides your retired parents are reading], it somehow managed to pick a yard from my street for a shitty chase scene. With barking dogs and all the jazz!

    9/10 times a semi-open world like Exodus has is far better than the generic open world most games go for. Few games, like Elden Ring, do it well, and even then, it isn't without it's flaws. The downside of semi-open worlds is there's less to explore, the upside is that it's generally more well crafted and filled with well designed content. Give me more quality rather than quantity.

    • @thesummerofmark
      @thesummerofmark 24 дні тому

      Hubs are the best way to design game worlds imho. Case in point: Deus Ex and VTMB. And I agree with you. I don’t mind that there’s less to explore as long as the world is well crafted. In fact, I DON’T want full open worlds, I’m fine with hubs and semi open worlds

    • @TheBrick534
      @TheBrick534 24 дні тому

      @@thesummerofmark Agree completely. I also enjoy that hub based, semi-open world games USUALLY run around 30-50 hours, making multiple playthroughs much more tolerable imo. Having to slog through another 70-80 hour playthrough of a HUGE open world game is annoying to me.

    Such a great video! I loved the Metro world. Burning spider webs never got old. Wish it was less monsters and more humans trying to survive. The coverup about the war and everything else here was great. I would have much preferred espionage and moral questions to horde after horde of monster dogs and such. A good change was they fixed the gas masks a bit and you don't feel like such a limited timer in your head while scouring and exploring the world. Totally forgot about the cannibal group. Man that was a wild level! Great way to change things up a bit.

    Jade Empire didn't fail because it was a "new idea", it failed because it wasn't a very good rpg. Mechanically speaking, Jade Empire had ZERO depth, it was an action adventure game with very little rpg elements. This for a studio that built their entire legacy on in-depth rpgs was just bizarre.

    the "elephant in the room" gripe you had is literally your opinion and it's very wrong. the system where you can beat everyone is literally the most fun part of this game, it almost makes it sandboxy but you wouldn't get it. true you cant kill literally everyone like the four heroes and gomez, early on due to invisibility, because if you did it will lock you from progressing and beating this game. it's limited and not limited. it's not a fully blown simulator but the amount of npc you can kill is fascinating and it's called freedom. if devs gave you alternatives after killing everyone including those who teach you and the important npcs, then there could've been a secret alternative ending but they didn't think that way still they gave you the freedom to beat up and kill almost everyone. you can call it half immersive and sandboxy rpg. There were a lot of systems scrapped out from this game that were synergistic with one and another with this particular freedom mechanic, true. thievery, stealth, assassinations and many more, but they left out the most fun part which is beating a npcs. it's not even a serious gripe to even criticize, beating npcs, THE WHOLE POINT YOU CAN KILL THEM AFTER BEATING THEM. true, the way they react as if nothing happen and it doesn't have a chain reaction effect because of limited ai scripting after beating said npc but after killing a npc; npcs from your vicinity and locus will trigger their script "npc_is_killed" so they will start attacking you. The npc you beat will be scared of you which is an interesting mechanic on itself and no one else has done it the way gothic 1 did, even gothic 2 scrapped this interesting ai scripting mechanic out which is bizarre. maybe you're just nitpicking but i get it, said npc got beaten then their friends or bosses don't react or give you an aftermath result speech or reaction and it's lacking but it's such a small thing to even care or complain about ,kid, but killing will and it was the only penalty mechanic in the first game at least. take it as you're in prison and only the strongest will survive but you're the hero(player) will always triumph. that's the whole meat and potatoes of gothic 1. how could you miss that one crucial point and go against it?

    What modern stealth games ? What run for their money ? There are only 2 stealth franchises : Splinter Cell 1 -3 and Thief 1 -3 . That's it.
