Based on how much you enjoyed this game, I HIGHLY recommend tracking down the Knights of the Old Republic comic book series put out by Dark Horse Comics back in the day; they're a prequel to this game set during the Mandalorian Wars and do a lot of calling forward to the characters and events of this game even while they tell a really interesting and complex narrative of their own. Zayne Carrick, Marn Heirogryph, and Jarael are all among my favorite Star Wars characters to this very day, and in my opinion they're highly underrated among the fandom.
I love this retrospective, mainly because unlike other ones you ask the obvious questions an 8 year old me has not questioned for years. Genuinely never considered the obvious of why the black vulkars and hidden beks were right next to eachother, or how the hidden beks operate LOL. Really funny in hindsight, love the video!
i'm watching this video in little pieces. this video happened to drop as i play this game for the first time ever. so to experience it first hand, then hear you talk about it, it's amazing.
Glad I'm not the only one who finds the handling of lightsaber building as a little weird in this one. Always didn't like that it was like "this is an elegant weapon, now go make it on your workbench, dude." Great video!

KOTOR put western RPGs on the map after years of dominancy by JRPGs. None of the other western RPGs could compete with the likes of Final Fantasy before KOTOR came onto the mix.
Interesting point, though I’d never know how popular JRPGs were since I’ve never played one. JRPGs have never caught on in my country as most were on consoles which were virtually inaccessible here
I had a friend back when this came out, yes I’m ancient I know, who showed this game to me and my brother and we were instantly hooked. OG Xbox days and this game was pretty much unknown at the time because halo and the upcoming halo 2 were all the rage and, for some, you could play online with friends. Kotor and Kotor 2 were very underrated and they hold up extremely well today. I still love to play them on my switch and series X today.
Your take on the distain Jedis have earned is pretty spot on - it's like Lucas was trying to knock Plato's Philosopher Kings down a peg. I gave up on KOTOR hours into the game, about an hour after it forced me to abandon my role as a manipulative cunning smuggler and forced him into Jedidom. Thank you for putting this up so I can see how it plays out.
Really? You gave up that early......you know, you could go twice into manipulation and cunning once you become a Jedi. Complete with lying your ass off to the Council. And yes, Lucas was showing the Jedi to be wrong, right off the bat. If their reaction to Qui-Gon teaching Anakin was any indication.
@@HolyknightVader999 Yeah, obligatory combat felt boring and like I was being punished for not playing a more violence-centric character. The early post-Jedi-training bit had me realizing that the non-combat sections were dull timesinks too... so what was I playing for? It felt like a weaker Jade Empire without the novelty in the setting. (Nothing clicked for me, but I'm glad so many other people enjoy it.)
42:00 ish - I mean that was kinda the point of Kotor's jedi even in the first game, filtering the jedi flaws through a more adult lens and discovering their flaws. We aren't supposed to like elitiat supernatural power hypocrites. Love the clip so far 🎉🎉🎉
I keep going back and forth watching this video in chunks and bits. Still, this video is AWESOME! It's such a fun and thorough examination of one of the all time greats. I'm still amazed that you put this together as quickly as you did. This is good shit, dude!
This is a good video, but I'd like to add my take on the whole Jedi and Sith thing. The Jedi being flawed and wrong was a major part of the prequel trilogy. Their lack of emotional understanding or awareness of how the Republic was corrupt was a major part of their downfall. However, it is also worth acknowledging that it can be inferred the Jedi weren't aways this way, that their philosophy isn't wrong, rather their interpretation of it is, basically, they took "control your emotions" to mean "deny your emotions." It's also implied Luke will lead the Jedi back to how things should be after redeeming Vader. As for the Sith, they mainly exist to show that the Force can be misused and to show chasing your passions is just as dangerous as denying them. It's also worth noting the Jedi and Sith are just two ways of interpreting the Force.
This is a good comment, when I hear people talking about star wars I hear allot of the time that the Jedi were evil and dogmatic and blind, which is true to an extent, but we must remember how small their order actually is, there was only around 10k Jedi, which compared to the trillions of sentients in the star wars galaxy isn't very much, they were just doing their best, and they couldn't just leave the republic and go into the outer rim because how would they pay for food water and living accommodations? They depended on the Republic, there's something else too, sith ideology isn't an interpretation of the force, or another aspect of it, the force is the light side, the dark side is like a cancer, which shouldn't exist
I have a really hard time playing the 2nd one as well. The gameplay is enormously better than 1, but god the story is just so awful… I have tried countless times to get through it and I simply cannot stand how long it takes to get past Telos. For me, having what is essentially the prologue consume most of the game is unbearably frustrating considering the fact that I actually enjoyed it originally. I mean Korriban is so damn short that I end up just wandering around looking at the views for hours because I can’t stand how short it is. Add into that the amount of absolute hatred I have for Kreia. She is just the worst character I have ever encountered, and I don’t mean that in the traditional sense. I think she should have been a character we should have to “check in” with after every planet, rather than being forced to hear her complaining about everything that makes a Star Wars game fun. Light VS Dark. There are waaaaay too few Gray options in the game for me to bother with anything revolving a whole character just to please her. However, I still think she was very nicely written and very well voiced. She is quite reminiscent of Cersei Lannister from GOT. Everyone hated her, but you loved her simply because she could bring you to absolute rage while being a fake character in a TV show. You can’t help but admire the way the actress made us just seeth with fury with every single word she spoke. On the other hand, I do NOT enjoy being forced to speak with her after turning every damn corner even when I exclusively DID NOT BRING HER. TL;DR, Bastila is nicer and more pleasant to hear complaining every 5 minutes than some old gross lady who got fisted by Dead Boi Sion.
They are very, very different games. Kotor 1 is your classic star wars story, the light prevailing over the dark, the Jedi hero, etc. Kotor 2 is very, very dependant on you taking your time to speak to all characters, and understand the overall story. It's a more personal story, if you like, more about the inner struggles and issues, and how the constant fight between dark and light takes its toll on the galaxy, the people, and even nature itself. It's a dark story, and doesn't have a grand hero ending. It's not for everyone, but is brilliantly written, and has a unique take on the core of star wars and the force.
@@moisesfernandez5681 that was kinda my point. The biggest issue I had was the characters. Kreia was so doom driven and convinced that everyone sucks. She was more of a Nihilistic character than Nihilius was. Atton was just Han Solo 2.0 pretty much, Bao-Dur was a boring yes man. Hanharr was almost the exact opposite. Visas was alright but had very little to do after your first encounter. Handmaiden was ungodly whiny and it ruined the story for Atris if you did anything wrong or right with her. HK was good but he had a whole previous game to help him, which was unfair considering he wasn’t even that great of a companion. Mira was also alright but the act of losing such a powerful fighter in Hanharr did not outweigh the potential she offered, since you get Mandalore who certainly wipes her out in terms of both combat and intrigue. T3 was similar to HK but the reverse. Most people never bothered with him past Taris because he sucked, which did not improve much at all because you spent the first 30% of the game without him.
@@moisesfernandez5681 I suppose what I have the biggest issue with is the lack of universe in general. It doesn’t really matter what you do, nor does it really feel like Star Wars. All in all, it feels like someone tried to force too much “adult” stuff into it. Which is why I think it’s the lesser of the two games. It was a huge secret test that people were trying to use to justify the fan base growing up. However, it failed…

A cool metagaming strategy (absolutely unnecessary since the game isn't hard) is to not level up your main character until you become a jedi. The game forces you to level up once, but otherwise you can save all the XP and get a bunch of jedi levels after the first act.
We all went through our pluralistic, libertarian phase in high school. Recognizing right and wrong doesn't leave a lot of room for "not taking a side" or "just like, everybody can be right because of how they feel, man". Jolee was an awesome character and he was wrong about the force.
Aww you didn't give the Krayt Dragon Pearl to the Sand People? I always go back to Tatooine once I have better saber upgrades than the pearl and hand it over to the chief. At which point you can get a lot of cool lore from the Sand People about the origins of Tatooine and the Tuskens
And yeah the game is much better when you spend the time figuring out what each character is best at and making that what you specialise them the most for
