I really enjoyed this! It's cool to see a deep dive into a specific level - it's been so long since I last played Deus Ex as well so it was fun to see the different routes again!

Great video! Did want to comment on a few things:
    1. Do you know about the secret medical bot at the start of the mission? It's in a crate to the left as you leave the docks.
    2. You don't need to push the tnt crate to the door of the sunken ship, it will just float to the surface anyway. There's actually a line of planks on the dock that line up with the door, follow it, throw the tnt over the edge, shoot it, and the door blows open.
    3. The EMP field bunker, you can safely just put the crate on the forklift tines without going through all those steps.
    4. If you crouch and throw the tnt crate near you, it doesn't toss it with enough force to detonate it. You can set it down gently this way, and place things accurately.
    5. I think it might have been worth a mention that there is an ATM machine in the base of the statue building, teaching the player to look out for accounts/hacking.
    6. Definitely would have mentioned that Paul comments on how you played the mission.
    7. The ladies bathroom. ;)
    8. If you kill guard that walks in during the conversation with the NSF leader, because you can, and can get the machine gun early, Manderley has unique dialogue about it.
    9. It's fun to get enemie's attention and kite them into one of the two friendly bots on the island.
    :)

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
      1. I didn't know about that one lmao
      2. That'll be useful information for future playthroughs haha
      3. I know, the process was exaggerated for comic effect
      4. Same as above haha
      5. I deadass forgot about that ATM machine. You can even find the login data somewhere near Gunther's cell
      6. I didn't want to spoil everything, so I left that out of the final script
      7. hahahaha
      8. Same as 6
      9. I kinda hinted at that when I told viewers to remember that robot on the docks ;)

I do want to see similar content, namely an analysis on the clockwork mansion from Dishonored 2

Ooooh that would be an interesting one for sure. I don’t know if I’m ready for that level of complexity tho. I was thinking about hitting the Boyle Mansion mission first

Thus starts the Summer Grim Mark Beard War.
I love how tight feeling but manageable and balanced the cost/reward system in Deus Ex is in terms of consumable items and character builds. When you talked about getting into the hatchway just outside ISAF... I mean UNATCO, headquarters, you mentioned the limitations of using lockpicks. They're good tools, but you can't over rely on them, like every other tool or RPG skill in the game, because of the awesome job they did with managing the "currencies" the player has access to and allowing multiple solutions to problems without any one thing being a skeleton key to forward progress. Frequently, hacking or picking access to an area rewards the player with a different type of tool, steering them into mixing up their approach to future aituations. And, brilliantly, outsmarting the level design (and evesdropping/snooping through datalogs) lets the player retain consumable tools/units of currency, opening more options later. Inventory size limits prevent the player from getting too far ahead in terms of consumable problem solvers, so the tension never fully disapates. It's so good!

Prey 2017 had a similar approach with its in-game consumable economy. They did a great a great job, but not to the same level as Deus Ex

@@thesummerofmark Thank you - I have a GOG copy of Prey but haven't downloaded it yet on account of my homes extreme wifi limitations. I think your assessment just sealed the deal on me jumping through the hoops to cat5 into the router at work and download it.
I'm a real sucker for tight, layered mechanics. Pathologic 2 is my game of the decade.

There is a skeleton key of sorts. The Dragon's Tooth Sword + Combat Strength augmentation + Low-Tech skill will exceed the damage threshold of most destructible doors and will instantly destroy all camera and turrets. It requires a lot of investment though, which balances things out.

I think the only major change that would improve the level design would be to make UNATCO headquarters more visible once you leave the dock. It's very possible to take a right instead and never see it.

    • @thesummerofmark
      @thesummerofmark  2 роки тому +1

absolutely. another desperately needed improvement would be making the stairs leading up to the terrorist leader more visible. they are very easy to miss because they blend with the environment

You know I never knew about that ship, but I hardly ever go after that code from the contact. Usually vi just stack some crates and climb up the back of the statue.

I remember playing demo from some random disc years ago, it contained this level.
Despite technical issues (run like garbage before I've got my hands on something better, like Riva TNT2) and not knowing what's going on (due to language barrier) I still loved it, felt like X-Files The Game for me. Also Unreal music (Brandon and others) did splendid job when it comes to atmosphere in cyberpunk-like world.
