Everything Wrong With (reviews of) House of the Dragon SOLVED (maybe)
After watching several videos discussing CinemaSins, I decided to join the conversation about #review and #criticism and #fandom and #socialmedia
The results may surprise you (or maybe not, if you know me). At the intersection of #art and #industry is #houseofthedragon from #hbo

Tom Silver from @InterestingNerdClub and I had the good fortune to host @realnicklutsko , @Glidus from @MateriaUA-cam and @daturalacroyemusic for a game of Jeopardy that began off the rails (in true INC fashion). There's a bit of #gameofthrones a bit of #georgerrmartin some #bojackhorseman and some of the funniest jokes Tom and I have heard in our lives. And, as always, an H Jon Benjamin segmen...

So #houseofthedragonseason2 is still going strong. Daemon Targaryen, the Rogue Prince, is losing his mind, haunted by the ghosts of his past. Perhaps literally. Alys has taken a mysterious trip to Riverrun. Alicent and Helaea have to run from the Sept. And of course I have some theories to share and some explanations for why Harrenhal is doing what it does best. I think I’ve found the answers. ...

    the biggest issue with hotd s2 is that it's not long enough so I'm not gonna rag on it too hard when I literally just want more. its really warner bros discovery's fault this time around compared to GoT also the martell sibling povs getting cut from the show broke my heart, I fear you may be sparing yourself even more pain by skipping out on s8

      Excellent distinction. GoT began to suffer because of show runner neglect, HotD suffers despite the show runners being committed to making a good show

    The “critics” who criticized HotD like that aren’t critics, they are grifters. Similarly to how Th3Birdman has been exposing lately, like The critical drinkers, it’s not about legitimate criticism, it’s culture wars issues.

    This is an excellent theory, but I underestimated it the first time I heard it a year ago: The reason is your emphasis on the idea that Dany is the green-haired girl Dany played with in the Water Gardens. But Arianne is ten years older than Dany, so they wouldn’t have been play fighting together as kids of roughly the same age. They’d be way too different in size and maturity. Moreover, Arianne would have been 13-14 at the time Dany w as only 3-4 and it wouldn’t even be safe for her in the water pools yet; she’d be too likely to drown. Furthermore, if the point was to disguise a platinum-haired Dany with violet eyes by dying her hair green the last thing you would want to do is put in her water every day that would continually wash out her hair dye as she played so she would come out of the Water Gardens tending to look Targaryen even then she went in with darker green hair. So I think it’s very safe to say the green-haired girl was the daughter of the Archon of Tyrosh just as Doran says. This makes much more sense than her being Dany. But to me that’s not the strength of the theory, after I heard you describe it a second time on Interesting Nerds. The strength of the theory is that Dany took a similar journey to Myrcella through Braavos but she and Viserys ended up in Tyrosh where the real House with the Red door is, and that there was a plan to send Arianne across the sea to be with Viserys, and maybe also to bring Dany back to start playing in the Water Gardens or at least be in Dorne at about age 5 or 6 (when she would be old enough to learn to swim and play in the water) but it never happened bc Arianne’s mother freaked out and then shortly afterward William Darry dies in Tyrosh, most of the gold and jewels were stolen, and Viserys panicked and went on the run. When you combine this idea with the information that “the House with the Red Door was moved from Tyrosh to Braavos from a draft” isn’t it more likely that George revised the draft to reflect a mistake by Dany about where she was from one to five but kept the original idea that she was in Tyrosh. -A Theory of Ice & Fire discussion space on quora

      My son is 4. The 12-13 year old neighbor boys are always happy to throw a ball around with him. In an environment where the total number of children is limited and they’re all sharing one space, older kids are typically willing to entertain very small children, especially if they’ve been raised right

    • @jclaburn
      @jclaburn 9 днів тому

      @ My daughter is four too and she plays with the six year olds at her nature preschool and school after school not the older kids, which I watch every Day like Doran Martell. The significantly older kids ignore the younger ones mostly when there are other older kids to play with.

    • @jclaburn
      @jclaburn 9 днів тому

      @ I also have two 13-year old boys who certainly play with their younger sister who is technically 3 years and 11 months old. But that’s a little different than the dynamic at the multi age nature school where there are more kids and a full range of ages and they seperate into play groups that do span classes but the older kids will be doing more athletic games like soccer and basketball while the younger kids play simpler games like tag and make believe stories.

    • @MeeraReads
      @MeeraReads 9 днів тому

      I think it depends heavily on context, but there are certainly situations where much older children will play with small ones. At the water gardens it sounds like bigger children pair up with smaller ones to play chicken. And perhaps more importantly, GRRM doesn’t have kids and doesn’t seem to have much of a clue when it comes to child development. So the age gap and the fact that they played together isn’t definitive for me (Preston actually raised the same issue and then remembered that GRRM had included Rickon and the Freys playing together).

    • @jclaburn
      @jclaburn 9 днів тому

      @ This whole discussion is making me think that Dany will have a stop in Tyrosh. I firmly believe she will burn the Old Town in Volantis and conquer the city after she is free of the Dothraki khals. Then she will reverse her journey (go back) to Pentos and displace Illyrio once she is more wise to him and put the Tattered Prince in charge there. I’ve wondered if she will also go to Braavos and might stop in one more free city. So this whole thing is making me think she is going to go forward by going back through all the most important places she has lived, after Volatis, so likely Tyrosh, Pentos, and Braavos. Bc it’s ships the order could change so for example she could sail from Tyrosh to Dragonstone then to Braavos and finally to Pentos. She’s presumably be traveling by sea faster than her giant khalisar travels by land. So there could be a logic to establishing a base on Dragonstone, then sailing to Braavos to hire the entire fleet of Braavos to sail her Dothraki across the narrow sea, then sailing to Pentos to meet them, then sailing them all across to the Fingers of the Vale, which is where the Andals first invaded bc it’s the safest place in Westeros to land a giant group of people coming across the ocean. I think she’ll land in the Vale for several reasons, including that Tyrion would steer her there if he’s her hand and it’s shaped like Mordor and most of all that it wasn’t part of the war of five kings and has a giant stock of food to feed people. But if you are right, and she lived in Dorne, then I think she will land her giant army in Dorne like Nymeria. (Only I think Arya and Arianne have the Nymeria parallels more than Dany.) In other words, I think it will turn out that the House with the Red Door was in Dorne if Dany lands the Dothraki in Dorne but that it was in Tyrosh or Braavos if she lands her army on the fingers and ports of the Vale like the Andals instead of the Roynish.

    I'm glad this wasn't particularly about hotd, having still not seen it or engaged with it hahaha. I will say about nickelback though, on the point of forgiving artists for making things one might personally despise, that they're real people, with real feelings, and only the fat stacks of cash insulate them from how god damn mean people are about them. The only rock radio station that can be picked up where I live is in Vancouver, and they do an annual contest where local unsigned bands get their singles played on the radio, listeners pick the best ones, then the station supports the winning artist, and long ago, nickelback was one of them. That station plays so much god damn nickelback and I hate every single song of their's, but they were just kids, and they fuckin Made It. Pumping out the same shit over and over isn't particularly artistically impressive, but that's part of Making It, this is what their fans like. If I had never heard a single song by them because they never got popular, then someone played one for me and told me "this is off a self released EP by some pretty canadian boys" I would be confused why they weren't HUGE, because they play music designed to BE huge because that's what they want out of their art. I'm talking myself in circles, but at one time had some sort of point about the war between art and commerce and how deeply unhelpful the vast majority of discourse is. Thats why you make the videos and I watch em hahaha.

      (I was actually a Nickelback fan prior to the photograph album ☠️🫡) Unfortunately American radio doesn’t tend to promote local bands anymore, not since 2005. But I absolutely agree about the intersection of art and industry. I think it’s fair to criticize when the corporation has influenced the art to the point of making it just about money, which is what happened to Nickelback imo (and Shinedown and GoT, etc). They started out as good, or at least decent, projects and then basically sold out

    I’ve never really liked a film or tv adaptation of fantasy I’ve loved. I think hotd (and got for that matter) is entertaining but can’t hold a candle to the immersion of the books. I don’t understand the folks that are insisting on hotd season 2 being this huge drop off in quality. But then again I’m not that invested I just think the show is pretty.

  • @QuinnFirstOfHerName
    @QuinnFirstOfHerName 12 днів тому

    Thank you for making this! Many of the things people complain about with season 2 actually do make sense if you approach it with good faith instead of immediately writing it off as bad. My favorite is the people who say that Alicent was written inconsistently because she tried to protect Aegon at the end of s1 but then gave him up at the end of s2, as if she didn’t have a whole character arc that led there. I wouldn’t say the season is flawless, but it’s doing a lot of really cool things with the text and I can’t wait for season 3.

I wrote my master's on ASOIAF, movement, undeath and the racial O(o)ther this year and I think your input about fae and these pacts would have been incredibly insightful. I think some ASOIAF channels don't really get the deeper meaning and themes of the books beyond a general idea that "monarchy=bad" but your videos actually get at the heart about the intersection between feminism, subjective reality, class and magic at the heart of the books.

    Female metalhead here. Yes, lots of gatekeeping about metal, what is metal, what isn’t metal, what’s good metal, etc… I think part of it is because metal is usually more technically intricate than many other kinds of music that we have a superiority complex about it. A lot of metal is symphonic or classically inspired and/or composed, not to mention the techniques used for power metal’s operatic vocals and even death growls and black shrieks. I love Glidus’s videos and observations and mainly got hooked on him with his Season 8 episode one comparing Cersei to Bart Simpson “I want en elephant!” That was in my head when watching her complain about the lack of elephants and he was the one UA-camr who satisfied me in that regard, lol. Very well done video and I’ll be watching more from you

    …you’ve made me realize something about the toxic viewers (assuming it isn’t just clickbait)…as rational people, we think the hardest hitting criticisms are those that have the most truth to back them up, the most evidence: we weight them by “most LIKELY to be true”…. Toxic non-informed viewers….weight things by “most damaging IF they were true, no matter how ridiculous” For example, a criticism most LIKELY to be true / harder to disprove is “too many redundant scenes were spent on the three core characters, time taken from secondary characters like Cregan Stark, Helaena, Rhaena with Jeyne Arryn, who were relatively underused” The weighting based on “most damaging if true” would be “Sara Hess is a cannibal”. Is this what algorithm fueled politics like pizza gate has done to us as a society? People automatically believe the worst about their opponents? Ultimately making a WEAKER counter argument? Rather than a measured assessment and critique of their actual faults?

  • @thedragondemands5186
    @thedragondemands5186 13 днів тому

    33:30 that’s not a real complaint made by the major ASOIAF themed channels: King’s Landing and Dragonstone are close enough in Blackwater Bay it wasn’t an issue: to an extent some yelled “how did Ser Arryk even get through the blockade?” But that’s a separate issue. NO ONE “teleported” in season 2…in terms of time constraints. Rhaenyra sneaking into KL was a bit silly but it’s not a timeline issue - people who hated it wanted a “gotcha moment”…. But why not just argue the real point? “I don’t think this makes sense for their character arc”…..basically they’re trying to build straw man arguments…they COULD build a strong argument about story arcs that’s like 60% effective….but they WANT something that’s an 100% slam-dunk against it - even if they have to invent it!

  • @thedragondemands5186
    @thedragondemands5186 13 днів тому

    19:55 the reason all of these cuts and condensations happened was to push the core actors into big “emotive” scenes…to pander them for awards. To vicariously pad D&D’s resume so they could jump ship for Star Wars films. There is no “artistic” reason: “Beyond the Wall” exists as awards bait to try to win Harington an Emmy. BAD awards bait that didn’t even work.

    It wasn’t like this during season one. What platforms were you on before if you only engaged with it on UA-cam in season two?

      During season 2 I was on Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, and Discord. My engagement with UA-cam was relatively minimal.

    I take issue with your assertion that battles are boring because - though I'm really interested in characters - battles are very dramatic and they explore environment and even culture. War is one of these strange human things which talk about our relationship with non-human things - nature. In its 'pure' form and how it manifests in 'civilised' (i.e brought out of a state of nature, an immersion in nature) human beings. War is primal aggression 1% of the time and practical logistics 99% of the time. And the environmental exploration is just so fascinating and vital, I kind of *need* to see characters go outside and interact intimately with valleys and forests and ditches and villages. It feels rich and also a new framework for exploration of character. Characters have a different set of concerns, usually more immediate and intense (do or die? risk myself or help others? or use them as human shields or as a trap almost, like Aegon suddenly became). Also, I admit I never could get into ballet. But battles are... balletic. A dance of dragons. I can appreciate ballet via this comparison. They're both full of human feeling without words, without explicit meaning. Right? Tell me if I'm wrong.

      Strategy has aspects of all this aswell. On the other hand, I deplore any level of deep discussion about weapons and armour. I'm sure it's very important but I just fall asleep

      The point is that it’s my subjective opinion. I just don’t like them. Some people don’t like carrots, I don’t like battles.

    BTW my favorite grrm battle ive read has to be the tyrion battle they cut from the show. Reading it was droll when I first got the books, but when i got the audiobooks it quickly became my favorite!! Roy dotrice gave the whole thing this voice (as you mentioned), this anxiety, this reality of the situation that i didnt capture on my first read. made me appreciate the battle scenes more 🤸‍♀️

    the map debacle was so tired, like out of all the things one could critique about the episodes, people chose maps? fantasy maps drawn up by maesters who are using a loosely scientific metric system? arbitrary maps drawn by an author who doesnt specialize in maps? this is what people took umbrage with? Idk it just was so distracting online given how good the episodes were 🐂

    I want GRR Martin to watch this video. His response to HOTD has been disappointing and it’s sad to see him completely missing the point of adaptation and why/how adaptations have to be different from the source material.

    Awesome video! I honestly can say I don't love nor hate HotD season 2. I enjoyed it, but really disliked the finale, but I'm still going to watch season 3. Its an enitre season of a show, it can have good stuff and bad stuff. Also, I really enjoyed your take in this vid, and you did a really good job of putting my thoughts on HotD and Nickleback into words.

    The motherhood and a song of ice and fire video you are looking for already exists in my opinion, and was made by bookborn (also this was a great video that made me reconsider some things about my views on season 2 of HotD)
