The meaning and exact role of the barrows is very CRYPTIC, indeed. Your fellow YT nerdlings @InDeepGeek and @FantasyHaven both have great crypt theory vids too. There are sure to be some sort of "good guy", walking dead types to counter the throngs of Wights. It will be interesting to see what "awakens" them. Red comet something, mayhaps?
It's an interesting hypothesis, I'll grant, but in my opinion, the distinctiveness of the Winterfell crypts, as opposed to the weirwood burials or the barrows leads me to believe that the tradition of the Starks in the crypts came out of wanting to keep information away from the weirwoodnet, as inaccessible to the roots of the weirwoods as possible. This is in my opinion why the oldest Starks are buried so far down, and it also explains the practice of using the swords to seal the spirits. I know that leaves unexplained the issue of the castle grounds not being levelled, but I'll attribute that more to the idea of Winterfell growing over thousands of years, as opposed to any indication regarding a barrow. To me it seems that the crypts are supposed to be quite distinct from those.
Yes. There is a distinction between the Others and the Children and I believe they are both analogous to the Aos Sidhe. The next video about the pact will talk about the crypts themselves, iron, and the promises that might have been made (and the reasons for them). If they only wanted to keep their dead away from the trees, they could have burned them like the Wildlings do (who are also First Men)
There are so many parallels between the Sidhe and Martin's mystical creations. Check out the story of the Tuatha da Dannan coming to Ireland, then read about the Targaryens conquering Westeros. Mind fireworks
Dude you don't even know. The Blood of Winterfell is interesting AF. So many mysteries. Why can they warg animals? I think they're related to the Others
@@MeeraReads oh, I know, lol. I just though it was funny that both the Blood and Crypt of Winterfell are actually super interesting. He was clearly trying to make a cheesy gang joke but accidentally said something that made sense
cool theory, I like how it explains a lot of stuff, especially the stuff ppl think George made a mistake with. I doubt he made mistakes with world building, like horse genders I have no doubt he could have messed up, but lore stuff that is the basis for other systems I doubt. I enjoy illustrating ASOIAF, you've given me more ideas now, thanks :)
Up and to the right is how to escape an underground maze that climbs upwards. Lots of underground mazes in essos, so that is a cool catch. Dany is an underground maze for that part. The Barrows was the OG Winterfell is how it reads to me-as in first, the 1st mens had the Barrows to survive winter...then, the Long Night and Others came. Winterfell was made as a defense-keep. Winterfell worked better to survive the Long Night, so after that shitshow, power shifted to Winterfell. And the Barrows, they connect up to Winterfell crypts. As does White Harbor through Wolf's Den and even the Dreadfort, likely. they all connect up at Winterfell crypts. THIS is where I think Jaimie is seeing himself in that dream-vision when he is with Brienne in a cave, by the way. Anyways, Lady Dustin gave it away when she tells Theon she already looked for the crypts entrance in the cellars and in the dungeons. She looked in the cellars, cuz that is where the entrance is located in Barrowton Keep/castle. She looked in the dungeons cuz that is where the entrance is located in White Harbor-at the Wolf's Den. Wolf's Den is a dungeon. And if the Dreadfort connects, it connects thru the dungeons likely as well. I am pretty sure Dreadfort connects tho-and the reason why is the fact that part of the crypts have been sealed off. THAT is where those paces connect up and into Winterfell. Starks blocked it off, thanks to Bael the Bard, etc. Manderly and Barbrey are prolly trying to unblock the Winterfell Crypts connection. Roose is helping.
Kind of blew my mind with this one. It totally went over my head that it doesnt make sense for them to be built from the bottom up until now. I also didnt realize the winterfell ground wasnt level. Good food for thought here, thanks!👍🏾
Yes, that’s the parallel. My suggestion here is that in the ASOIAF universe, there is a deliberate connection between the roots of the trees and the dead, for magical purposes
I dont think the Shade of the Evening trees/HOTU in Qarth are from the Iffeqevron, who reside on the far north side of Essos. I think its more likely whoever built it came from Leng.
It’s my understanding that GB includes England, Scotland and Wales, while “UK” refers to the Isle of Britain and Ireland. My research showed burial mounds in both England and Ireland. I did my best to be accurate, as I understand that all four countries have their own distinct languages and cultures. If saying “Britain and Ireland” is more accurate than “UK” then I will adjust my language in the future
Something that might be relevant info strengthening this theory: in archaeology, anthropology and population studies in general there is the concept of a "tel" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tell_(archaeology) basically a mound of "architectural detritus" that is accumulated with successive settlings of the same site, making it so every human settlement tends to get a bit more elevated than the last one there and you get archaeological "layers" to a mound site ("Tel Aviv", for example, is a city on top of such a mound. So is "Tel Megiddo", the place mentioned in the bible as the site of the final battle of Armageddon). This topographical phenomena could explain the order of the burials in Winterfell, I suppose. More like Wintertell amirite
Always assumed the Winterfell crypts were a repurposed existing cave system, but this makes a lot of sense! Looking forward to the rest of the series
Thank you! It’s going to be a long one, lol

In Deep Geek is AWESOME
Add Eldrich Stoneskin to that list

@@MeeraReads Alright, perfect! Can't wait.
So stoked that you released the start of this series, I’ve been looking forward to it since your first cryptic mentions.
So glad you’re here!
watch this groggily after waking up from a nap, great vid 👍
This is very good reasoning. There is a lot to decipher about the subterranean.
I've been looking forward to this one. I love fae lore. Can't wait for the rest of the series.
Thank you!
I enjoy your voiceover and analysis

Yes! I have also been looking at another group that came to Westeros with ships and have been compared to Vikings 👀
The Crypts of Winterfell are way more interesting than the Bloods of Winterfell,
Oof that was bad.
I love your content.
Lol, thank you!

Why can they warg animals? I think they're related to the Others
I think it has to do with the pact with the Children of the Forest.
(Buford’s joke was also about 90s gangs, the Bloods and Crips)

Uhhh actually there are 6 Barrow brothers, 4 use melee, one uses magic and the other range.
This is a reference to the mmorpg Runescape
of course - Winterfell is a tree city in stone!
The Tuatha are a previous generation of Gods, they are by and large weirder than the Gods that work with humans, lots of chthonic manifestations.
I thought fae in GoT were Elf and barrows were like roots formation of the trees with faces
