I think a lot of people are underestimating sponsor power. LH is a huge pull for sponsorship and investment - GR not so much. Surely Toto is doing exactly what you would expect in business which is thinking of future investment and trying to show sponsors that they have someone in the cockpit that beat 8 x WDC and a potential WDC, no matter how laughable that actually is. Then with Kimi coming in, who already is more exciting than GR. This is sabotage but not for anything other than money and investment.
