Peter Windsor: Piastri is a NIGHTMARE for Lando Norris!

  • In this interview with @peterwindsor we discuss George Russell's drive at the Belgian GP and whether this was Russell's vindication and proof that he can be an F1 world champion in the future. Was he unlucky to be disqualified and was it Mercedes fault why his car was underweight? How Peter Windsor feels about Carlos Sainz' contract with Williams and whether the Spanish F1 driver is right to have clauses that would allow him to drive for Red Bull or Mercedes should the opportunity arise. Why is Lando Norris struggling so much, and is he better than his young team mate Oscar Piastri? Is Lando hurting his chances of becoming a champion by being so negative and why are his starts so bad? Did McLaren make a mistake in signing Oscar Piastri in the first place? What would Peter Windsor do with Checo Perez after his underperformance this season and who would he replace him with? How much do finances and sponsorship money come into play in Christian Horner making a decision on whether to keep or sack Sergio Checo Perez? We discuss whether Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson is most likely to replace Perez.

    I'm putting my money on Oscar. Oscar feels he has to prove he is faster than Norris since that Hungarian fiasco. Landon is mentally in the shadow of Max. Oscar has the quiet killer instinct. Landon criticized Lewis he won because He had fastest car 7 years ago, and yet he has the fastest car now and he can't win races. That is killing his racing mentality " I can't beat Max even in a faster car ". Oscar is growing, gaining confidence and will get faster.

      I agree but still want to see Oscar beating Norris regularly in Qualifying, Race and FPs then I can say he is faster. Regarding Norris I guess bow he understands how difficult it is to win even wirh faster car. Yes Max has a more dominant car but how Norris loses positioning the first lap does bot help. In my opinion he lost the momentum to increase his confidence and take the fight to Max this year. 2nd place is open between Ham, Norris and probably Oscar at the moment

      Completely agree. This reminds me of Lewis’ rookie years, all Alonso could think about was Lewis. Lando is starting to resemble the self sabotage characteristics of Alonso. Oscar seems more mission oriented without the drama of Max and Lando.

      George is a good driver but will never be great. Most drivers would have done what he did by staying out with the one-stop. He was thinking about himself and not the team. Oscar was threatening the 1-2. George would have sacrificed Lewis in order to have even a sniff of a chance of winning. The team should have told Lewis earlier what George was up to and he would have pressured George more once he had caught up with him!

    • @simonmiller5118
      @simonmiller5118 6 місяців тому +15

      With all of the information the strategists had, why did they not change Oscar's race to a one-stop? What are they paid for? Consider the following:
      - Oscar got the fastest lap just prior to pitting
      - Oscar said "Clean air is king" meaning being in front was a winning strategy
      - He was 5.6 seconds ahead of George and pulling away when he was pitted
      - It was clearly very difficult to overtake, especially with the shortened DRS
      - Tyre degradation on the hard was clearly minimal on the new surface
      - He was 15 seconds ahead of Lewis with 14 laps to go
      - They knew George was going to a one-stop strategy
      The McLaren strategists had all of this information, yet they pitted Oscar and put him back into 4th place 14 seconds behind George and gave up an almost certain win. I was convinced Oscar would stay out, and I was absolutely shocked when they brought him in. So I ask again, what are the strategists paid for if they have access to all this data yet seem unable to make the right decisions? Oscar must be growing tired of their mistakes.

    What I don't understand is this need to suggest Oscar is a driver to "beat", rather than Oscar having No. 1 driver and WDC potential in his own right that also deserves to be supported. Like he's just one of Nigel Mansell's "very fast teammates" that will be forgotten with time because Nigel trounced them, because the team cast them aside to fully back Nigel. I also don't understand this sole focus on Lando like he's the only driver worth supporting in the team, or suggestions that they should forget about Oscar to prop up Lando at every opportunity and that Oscar's career and races should be sacrificed despite him only being 1 and a half years into his F1 career and showing this level of skill and potential already. Even the suggestion that McLaren shouldn't have signed Piastri because he's too good and might upset Pete's Golden Boy is beyond ridiculous. McLaren have two Number 1 drivers now and Oscar is making an excellent case for himself. To say anything else is not only silly, it's clear irrational bias.

Yes McLaren made the mistake, but the mistake they made was giving Lando Norris the undercut twice over his teammate who was absolutely leaving him in his dust in the first two stents. It’s only because they gave Lando the undercut twice that he was anywhere near Oscar in that race, therefore they issued team orders to properly correct positions. So McLaren should pass up the opportunity to sign potentially the fastest drivers just to make sure that their incumbent driver remains happy. Ridiculous. Norris is a 6 season veteran, yet in only a season and a half Piastri has shown himself to be everything McLaren had hoped for. Mercedes is a good case study, old master Schumacher bringing on young gun Nico, works well, Nico and Lewis no so good. Lewis and Valterri good enough to win multiple constructors without unsettling the number 1 driver. I think Pete is pissed off that mclaren signed a better driver than lando. How dare McLaren want to improve. Lando has to beat Oscar regardless whether Oscar drives for McLaren or another team. The fact he's in the same team is irrelevent. Lando has shown that he doesnt have the mental stength to compete with oscar, lewis and max.     I'll just say, regarding Penalties, in the Belgiun case the weight of George Russel's car;
    You can't pass the penalty to the constructor as Peter is suggesting.
    Penalizing the driver placement punishes the whole team, and that has a powerful effect. Punishing the whole team will act as a powerful deterrent.
    I do understand where Peter is coming from as it wasn't Georges fault, but .... at the end of the day George is just another member of the team.
    F1 might not look it, but its one of the prime, if not the prime example of a team sport.
    And to add ............... A brilliant interview, good questions, good answers, very enjoyable to listen to.

    I must have missed the fact that Lando has been at Macca since 2019. 5 1/2 years and new upstart Piastri after only 1 1/2 seasons is already in Lando’s head. What occurred turn 1 in Hungry was just hard racing. No one except Windsor complained about that. Lando needs to get his head down, not so publicly castigate himself. It’s good to be self-critical but so openly in public? Every other driver and indeed team boss see Lando’s openness as weakness. The whole Hungry radio fiasco just showed that Lando is confused if to be ruthless like a Vettel or M Schumacher or play the team game. Windsor says Macca big mistake was signing Piastri, and should have kept Danny Ric. Could the reason why Macca signed Piastri be that they are not completely sold on Lando being a future world champ?

    I really think Pete is speaking far outside his wheelhouse now and his personal biases are very plain to see. Completely out of touch. He's just a Lando fanboy and that's all. He doesn't seem to understand that drivers have PR teams to handle their social media directly - very few drives do it themselves. In fact, Oscar is one of those drivers who handles his Twitter directly but even then he has a social media and he isn't on it all the time. He doesn't seem to realise that Lando isn't on social media all day and is constantly working back at the factory. And the way he talks about Lando and Oscar and Hungary and their relationship and dynamic is nothing more than just baseless personal speculation with a great deal of bias. The only reason Lando went wide in Hungary is because he tried defending against Oscar too hard for no reason - exactly the same thing he did against Max in Spain - and then left the door open for Max on the outside which he then had to suddenly cover. He wasn't trying to baby Piastri. In Spa he just misjudged the corner and went too wide.

    Putting Piastri alongside Norris was a strange move and Peter Windsor highlighted it early on. The team dynamic at McLaren now reminds me of the way Ferrari used to run his team: getting the two best drivers and playing them off against each other, gaslighting them and all at the expense of the team. Helmut Marko does the same thing at Red Bull. Some teams just don't function very well and even succeed in spite of themselves. I guess if you have a team like Red Bull where you have the best guys and the best driver, World Championships are possible. But at McLaren there's nothing between the two drivers, which makes the team dynamic less than ideal, even sour.
