Making Vinyl Records with Hellbender Vinyl (Jeff Betten)
Buddies, you know how important quality and good sounding vinyl are to record collectors everywhere. Today on the pod I speak with Jeff Betten, founder of Hellbender Vinyl in Pittsburgh, PA who gives us a peak behind the curtain of their facility. Open for just under two years now, Hellbender has quickly developed a reputation for quality and creative solutions. As Jeff says "if you can dream it up, we can make it happen". Here Jeff shares the origins of Hellbender, and how an ambitious idea turned into a business plan, and then a full-fledged pressing plant in a town synonymous with building and making things. That local DNA isn't lost on them, including their mission statement: "Hellbent on quality. Hellbent on service. One of America's most trusted vinyl record pressing plants".
Jeff is a musician himself and has been part of the Pittsburgh music scene for a bit, including time spent at a couple labels in the city. From large runs for household names acts, to smaller orders for indie bands just breaking in, Hellbender serves artists and their fans alike by creating great vinyl to share with the world. Learn all about this business and what their future holds here only on Vinyl Community Podcasts!

Rocksteady is one of my favorite albums of theirs. It benefited from Nellee Hooper's production. Nice Third Eye Blind OG. So many hits off of that one. Their sophomore release was available on vinyl upon its release (1999). It's somewhat forgettable, though. Damon is an incredible artist. Wow, congratulations on Tripod. You weren't lying when you said you were bringing on the heat!

@ConcertBuddie Back atcha!
Pretty amazing how a record plant was set up, that is crazy. Dang, too bad Denver now has a pressing plant. I had a lot of extra room in my pool shop warehouse. Very nice interview Chance , you always ask great questions and keep the conversation going
Thanks Steve! Don’t give up hope - I can see you pressing some Zamrock classics out of the pool shop warehouse as soon as this spring.
The Art Rooney of Records! That’s a huge accomplishment, Jeff! All the best to you. What’s most impressive is your connection to city government officials and the ability to secure financing for a million dollar loan in this day and age. That must have been one hell of a great business plan you presented! Congratulations! Pittsburgh strong 💪🏽

Great interview Chance. And Jeff seemed like a pretty nice and motivated guy himself. Hopefully Hellbender Records will be a huge success and I'll keep a lookout for their label or logo on my records as I buy them 👍 Brian in Fort Worth, 🎶
@@Bootradr Thanks Brian! Appreciate you checking this one out and learning about Jeff & Hellbender 🙌🏻
I believe there’s two markets when it comes to vinyl records. The veteran collector’s market (those who have been collecting for 10 plus years and will collect regardless of market conditions) and the retail newbie’s market. Covid is 100% responsible for the spike in record sales but not just vinyl records alone, all things in the online retail market were selling like never before. People didn’t have to pay rent, they were receiving stimulus checks and unemployment checks monthly, never before did society have more money to save and spend on whatever they wanted. Covid created a retail market which temporarily performed like a push up bra or even worse full blown D cup booby pads. False impression of long term reality always lead to disappointment. The buzz from the club has worn off, the bra has dropped and the lights are on bright. The vinyl market is never going to die off completely. It’s simply changing from D cups to B cups.
Did you listen to that same podcast I did this week on boobs? 😂😂😂
@ 😂😂😂🫡
How was the Ohio players able to get away with those covers in the 80’s in America…. I pulled one out to listen to the other day and my wife gave me a look like what the heck 😂
@@Chasing_records Legends. Because they are freaking legends, that’s how. 😂
Haha! Those are only for when the wife is away! 😂
Is a butcher cover not the perfect example of a record that deserves to be slabbed? Or do we think that someone who owns a butcher cover should be playing that particular copy of when they want to listen to the album yesterday and today? Why wouldn’t they just listen to another copy? Because they should give one of the copies to someone else so that someone else can enjoy it? Do we honestly think that there will ever be a reality where a butcher cover being slabbed is what keeps someone from being able to listen to yesterday and today? Same goes for many albums, the turquoise zeppelin, an unpeeled velvet underground and Nico torso cover. Id even say a first UK dark side, and so many more. These things are pieces of history they are treasure and they belong in a museum, aka my house.
@@arzabael you make a strong argument, no doubt. I’ve never heard a soul say that record is the best audible version of the recording; in this case, the cover IS the story of the record, so slabbing can definitely be a good use of preserving it. Well played!
@@ConcertBuddie yes exactly haha it may as well be a baseball card! The visible front and back of the outside is what matters. Although you do definitely want to know that the record is playable. It would take away from it in your mind if you knew the record skipped or something haha. But yes the cover is what matters so it’s the perfect example of slabworthy
@@arzabael I like that word - "slabworthy". We need to trademark that sucker!
@@arzabael agreed. I would be afraid of not slabbing it. Keep it protected. And nobody lives forever. Eventually the record will end up in somebody else’s hands. Might as well put the grandkids through college while you’re at it.
@ indeed. I absolutely take into consideration that I’m pretty much just a custodian of artifacts until someone after me gets them so I may as well keep some things sacred. If it weren’t for those who left things sealed before me how could I have had the joy of opening sealed old records, which is part my responsibility to help cultivate for the next era
Seriously everytime I see one of these thumbnails I get a sense of happiness come over me and get excited to listen to the record rant. Best long form podcast in the VC in my opinion.
@@arzabael means a lot these shows make you happy. That’s the goal! Your positive support means the world, thank you! Have a great weekend ✌🏻
Thank you so much! See you next time! 😊
David, you have a sealed Butcher counterfeit from Japan. Probably has a colored vinyl record inside. Frank
Yes, it appears during a move activity to share out some of my duplicates with one of my kids, they brought that counterfeit here for me to look at and it got put in the safe; so that was the one I pulled out last night not realizing it was in there. Good news is mine is still there "safe & sound". I need to give her back her "grail find". Thanks Frank!
@ David, I could tell about the colors were not quite right & the back cover was too white. Also the originals were not sealed in a loose shrink. Have an original sealed 2nd State mono Butcher Cover in a tight shrink with factory breath holes, where there is some foxing from over 50 years of storage. The Butcher that Heritage Auctions sold for 112 K was one of the Livingston covers that was in the president of Capital Records dark closet for over 25 years. Those 23 copies from that box in the closet are about the only sealed original 1st State Butchers that exist in the world. Thanks for the quick response, Frank
Jason, do you have a #3 or #6 on the back lower right corner on your half peeled Butcher? Looks like a #6 with the strong glue. Thanks Mr Stickermania

I'll take the Shuggie and Tim Maia please 🙂. EPMD Strictly Business...total classic. The legend that was John Peel played their debut 12" in 1987 on his BBC 1 radio show and I recorded it. Crazy that the guy championed the likes of Zappa/Beefheart, Velvet Underground, T Rex, Bowie, The Fall, The Smiths etc etc when they were unknowns and was playing underground hip hop in the 80s. Anyway, I digress....great buys all round mate. Cheers Nige
Thanks Buddie! The vinyl gods have been very good to me on these latest adventures. Now I rest….maybe. 🙃

On behalf of all record stores in NYC we want to thank you for spurring our economy to new heights. I have never heard of a Tim Maia but I guess this is the album to have. As usual I am missing out.
(Bows) thank you Steve. Just doing my part. Give Tim a try, especially the early albums. You might like it! If not, blame Jazz Bum Felipe 😂
Great finds! Inspiration information is one of my favorite albums and favorite songs. I picked up a mint unplayed WLP in Sedona seven years ago for $15.00. Sweet Barry Wine that’s a nice Nirvana!! Shuggie VS Prince? 🤔 Two of a kind in that they both are multi instrumentalists, writers and producers of their own music. Shuggie was anti establishment and anti record company executives. He didn’t want anything to with Pop music or its culture. He was a real maverick. Why shouldn’t he be, he’s the son of the great Johnny Otis. We love Prince and his music too just for different reasons. Shuggie transcends the meaning of music. Prince plays basketball in high heals. 😂
@@TheVinylRecordMission game, blouses. 😂😂 Impressed with that Shuggie detail, even more impressed with that WLP - wow 🤤
Amanda's dad had the BEST record store in the 80s. Spent all my money there as a teenager. He still does shows.
