Mind of The Record Collector: Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records
Buddies, Record Collectors, lend me your eyes (and ears)! For this latest 'sode on Vinyl Community Podcasts we resume my series "Mind of The Record Collector" which asks what we collect, why we collect it, and how we find it. Our guest today aims to touch all three tenets, and that is Josh Norrid - CEO/Owner of Hi-Fidelity Records in Tulsa, OK. Josh has a story familiar to many in the Vinyl Community: how a passion for this format and the music that comes from it lead him to work at record stores, for record companies, and eventually to open and operate his own business selling the best of the best Audiophile and high-end records available in the market today. Josh cut his teeth as a buyer at Josey Records, then learned directly from the pulpit (literally) of Chad Kassem's Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions operations in Salina, KS, before finally taking the leap in founding his own online business. Josh shares his personal journey as a collector along that road and shares his thoughts on the hobby today, how he sources his inventory, and even shares how he's added 21st century social marketing techniques to put the best pieces in the hands of the best collectors anywhere. Josh has a burgeoning presence on social media, including his own UA-cam channel sharing information, tips, and details he's honed in his 20 years plus in the business. We know you'll enjoy this latest "Mind of The Record Collector" as much as we did!

    Nice to see the full team there. Definitely bought a few resealed records over the years with the punchhole/cut-out being the obvious giveaway, as Arnaldo said. My pal just bought a sealed record online last week for £40. Just an average funk rock kinda lp but the actual record inside is a mint Grodeck Whipperjenny (£200+ JB related obscurity). Absolutely bizarre how that happened. He's obviously gonna keep it and hopes to find a sleeve although it's unlikely. Great chat guys... cheers Nige

    So slabbing and adding that cost to an already dubious sealed record possibly should insure best value in the future when slabbing may be a silly footnote in the history of vinyl.

    • @ConcertBuddie
      @ConcertBuddie 3 дні тому

      Back to your other comment, I would think these slabbing companies know what to look for on re-sealed items. I’m not that intimately familiar with their full evaluation process, but (if it was me) that’s something that would have to be part of the overall grading + authenticating process. Thoughts?

      @@ConcertBuddie plastic dna carbon dating of your “sealed” lp cellophane Is that where the slab guys expertise lies or is it the marketing of their “service”? Been collecting since 1970 and would never consider any value to the sealed aspect . To extrapolate forward and assume the sealed aspect is authentic and adding the next dubious slabbing cost seems counterintuitive for me. Good discussion Chance. Thanks always. Tony

    I worked in a record store from 78-80 while in college, we would reseal records regularly. It is easy and common to reseal, so you need to be very trusting to assume a 50 year old record that is sealed has been in that condition since birth. Back in the 70s ,the most coveted records were imports and they were rarely sealed.

    A lot of respect 🫡 for Josh! He is spot on about everything! Tricky is an understatement when it comes to buying large collections. There’s no magic formula other than being honest with the seller. When I buy in bulk the first thing I tell the seller is the following. If they want retail value (discogs, popsike or eBay) they will need to sell their records one at a time. To do that they need to open up an eBay account or discogs account, learn how to properly list a records, buy shipping supplies, learn how to properly grade, describe and pack records. Learn how to take great photos and upload them etc etc. And even then there is no guarantee they will sell them. You get the picture. You’ve gotta be a snake 🐍 charmer. There is definitely a market for this. Early stages but early entrants will have good upside. Just need to invest early on in what you like. Sealed product stands to benefit a ton. Which is good. Sealed condition always fetches the most money grading or no grading. At least there’s a way to better preserve them rate them and catalog them online. Overall a net win for vinyl investors. And collectors need not worry - most records have been re pressed several times. There is to some extent an affordable copy of what you want. Unless it’s niche or was never repressed. Than in that case it’s just natural scarcity at play and you should in response be willing to cough up the few hundred dollars it might cost. And worse case scenario, your favorite records can still be streamed or bought on cd if you’re really that afraid of price movements

I can honestly say I'm glad they did because I'd much rather have the Black Sabbath album than any of the other Rhino Hi Fidelity albums I've gotten so far 🙂 Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

      @@Bootradr good observation Brian. I think most expected these to come out, and not surprisingly Rhino wanted to tap the market while there was still heightened enthusiasm for that release. My guess is other folks on YT either already have one, have made content about it, or are onto the next thing. My guess is these next 5k will be around for a bit longer than 7-10 days. Have a great weekend ✌🏻

      @@ConcertBuddie Yeah that makes good sense what you said. I know I had been hearing the talk about Rhino reissuing the Black Sabbath copies again as well as starting to make some copies that would be put into record stores and places like that. I just had figured it was going to be "a while off" and I was kind of surprised to see they had already done it yesterday. But I can see why there wouldn't be any big announcement on this like there was when the first BS RHF run was announced and released. I normally try to get things like that (the ones I lwant) when they are initially released. But I figured I'd have a couple of days to come back and do it later. I think I was about a day late. That's what I get for thinking huh 🙂 I'm just glad I do have a chance to get one for way under the crazy $$$ they resell for at that. I had really wanted to get one but there's no way I'd pay what they're going for on Discogs. I'm just glad Rhino didn't jack the price up to $60 haha!

    Great show chaps. Had to laugh at the Maggot Brain segment. Flossing doubles to friends...true friendship 😁. I would have thought Arnaldo stood a good chance of finding an OG in his location though. Roy Ayers - Sunshine no longer a $10 record? How times have changed. The Pretty Things first 5 UK lps would look good in a box set...not financially viable I suppose. Cheers and have a good weekend Chance...Nige

      if you can't #flex on double copies with friends, who can you do it with? 🙂 Yeah, Roy Ayers (at least stateside) has become quite the pricey piece. I thought I did a solid getting one under $50 with some condition issues. Have a great weekend on your end too Nige!

    Great video! Bummer that Indy CD and Vinyl was closed! Just visited both shops this past weekend while my son and I were in town for Gen Con. These are both great shops with cool finds and personable, helpful staff, which isnnot always the case. I wore my 606 Records shirt and was given major props in Luna Music 👌🏼

    Good conversation mate. I tip my hat to anyone putting themselves out there on YT. It's not something I could do. Us older types have had the luxury of making our mistakes, learning etc behind closed doors and not revealing it on social media. If you put yourself out there and are still too green then unfortunately people are gonna let you know about it. The 'danger' is people have a platform and start talking about a record or genre that they know virtually nothing about and give incorrect information or just sound a bit clueless. But there's plenty of middle aged and older collectors who don't know as much as they think they do. Everyday is school day when it comes to record knowledge, for every single collector bar none. I can assure you you're a real record collector Chance, not that you need my endorsement but sell me your Rodriguez Sugar Man and you'll really go up in my estimations 😄. Regards Nige

    Very nice conversation, Chance (and Matt.) As to the "Crosley" question, I don't have a problem with someone buying one if they are just buying "thrift store" records ($1-5.) However, if they're dropping $40-70 an album, they are better off getting an entry level turntable (like an Audio Technica) for $125-150, along with a receiver and speakers (I've seen Marantz, Denon & Yamaha receivers under $50 on craigslist and in thrift shops, along with Boston Acoustics & Polk speakers in the same price range.) For $250, they can have a very nice little system to play their "overpriced" vinyl on (sorry, the CD Guy in me slipped out at the end.) I do have a suggestion for the next VC podcast...how about Ms. Concert Buddie & Stacey doing their own discourse on "Help me...I trapped in a relationship with a vinyl collector."

    • @ConcertBuddie
      @ConcertBuddie 20 днів тому

      Totally agree with the (obvious to us) upgrade folks should make once they start dropping more coin on their records. I lived this once with friends who had a Crosley and after we returned from shopping at Amoeba (they lived in LA), they went to play a $200+ record on their TT - I had to stop them in their tracks and espouse precisely what you share here - there are levels to this, and now you've unlocked a new level with this purchase, time to "level up" your TT. As for Mrs CB and Stacey, a fine idea, but Mrs CB is keen on staying off camera. She's seen some of the "targeted commentaries" a select few have thrown at me, said about me, made videos about me, etc. and she knows if that would be aimed in her direction, I would break a few necks. So basically it keeps me out of jail :-)

    • @revkarl
      @revkarl 19 днів тому

      @@ConcertBuddie Sorry, but Mrs. CB has already been featured on UA-cam...I believe one of her hands appeared in a Mazzy Wack-a-Mole. In fact, she and Stacey could do the whole video with just their hands being shown across a table from each other...no cuts during the whole 87 min. conversation...while most of the VC will be dumbfounded by it, pretentious pricks, like those found in exile in the wilds of Northern Europe, will proclaim it work of "Godardian cinematic genius, beyond the comprehension of the simple-minded proletariat!" (Just don't try doing it with feet instead of hands; that would just bring the freaks out of their mothers' basements.)
