Michael W2NVP from @hobbieshumans and I used his Buddistick Pro antenna for a Parks on the Air (POTA) activation on June 19, 2024 in the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor (US-6532). We used the antenna for SSB on 15m, 20m, and 40m, which included 7.200MHz. I also used the antenna to check-in to the Winlink Wednesday Net. I have the BuddiStick Pro as well and for what it is, it does surprisingly well. Once you learn where the counterpoise lengths are for the bands you want to tune, setup is quick and simple. It works much better with a longer whip though as the actual radiating part of the antenna is only 4’ long. Great video Mike!

      I haven’t had any issues with it falling over and breaking the connector. It does come with an eye bolt with some cord attached that screws into the bottom of the Versa-Hub so you can either tie to a weight or a small ground spike. This helps to keep it from falling over.

    I ran a 7300 next to a 991a for a year and ended up going with the 991a. I had friends that have owned their 7300 for years that sat down with me to try and get the most out of it and it just plain couldn't compare to the 991a. I now have the 710 as well and I think it has better receive than the 991a.

      @MikeN2MAK 5 днів тому

      Thanks, I totally agree. But it is good for travel, and it's a flexible setup when you can't put a wire in a tree, stakes in the ground, etc. It was my first time using an elevated radial and something I want to explore more.

    • @truckinguy92
      @truckinguy92 4 дні тому

      I let @TangoOscarMikeN3WS borrow mine for a short time to try it out to see if he’d like it. He’s correct a longer whip is much better. I’ve had an up to 17’ whip on mine and it makes a world of difference. It does get wobbly if there’s any stronger wind other than a breeze, but it pays off if you can get away with it. Unfortunately at that point it loses its portability factor.

    Have you tried any of the Boefeng all band radios or other similar ones with the modded firmware ? From what I see on UA-cam the range is from 18 MHz to 1.3 Ghz and they can be purchased for 40 dollars. Compared to the 900 dollars for each of the 1.2 Ghz and 900 MHz handhelds, I would really like to see a good real world side by side test the next time you do a field day. I bought a couple of the DMR dual slot radios for around 60 dollars and I was impressed with how well they worked. I keep hoping that Boefeng or one of the other Chinese companies would make a dedicated phase 2 digital scanner. The same factories that make these brand name thousand dollar HTs and Uniden scanners make the 30 dollar all mode generic radios. The level of corporate greed is just insane. The radio costs 10 dollars to make and they sell it for 900 dollars or more. The same thing with the Uniden and G5, they charge 800 dollars for a receiver that costs 20 dollars to.make. I saw sneakers in a store in Philadelphia yesterday that were behind bulletproof glass. They looked like the same material used in the 20 dollar Walmart sneakers, but the price was 3500.00 dollars. For sneakers. That is wrong on a level that has no words. I thought for sure that Kenwood and Icom and Motorola would lower their prices once the generic radios flooded the market. But they didn't. Very sad. My HOA made me take down my tower and antennas yesterday. I guess I will sell all my radios, since I can't use them without the antennas. People just can't leave others alone. They can't see someone happy. They are only Happy when they are hurting others. I weep for the human race

    Fantastic to see you getting on 6m and the higher bands! Nice work Mike! Alinco made some real cool random HT's back in the day.

      Thanks! Yeah, it seems like Alinco had some wild stuff and it was fun using the HTs. Now I'm going to keep an eye out for some 23cm and 33cm gear at hamfests this summer.

    Do you have a video on how to program it using the keypad

    • @MikeN2MAK
      @MikeN2MAK 19 днів тому

      No, unfortunately, I don't. When I first got it, I only programmed a few repeaters manually and using the bluetooth app, since it wasn't able to be programmed with Chirp. The bluetooth app might be an easier way to go than doing it manually.

    For my tripod, I either slide an Olympic weight over the mast and it rests on top of the 3 legs. I have hung weights under other tripods. Olympic weights have a larger hole in them. I usually use 10 to 15 lbs.

      That's a good idea! I already have weights.

    👍🏻 I'm looking for an antenna switch myself, Mike. I have an ATAS-120a, and the Yaesu FT991a. I'll be interested to hear what you're looking for in a switch. Congratulations on the 6 Pack Award!! 73 de KJ7LLX

      Thanks, Rodger! I'm not sure yet what to look for in a switch yet, but I'll definitely want to be able to hook 2-3 antennas up to it. I've got the summer to see what I find at hamfests.

    1296.100 is the SSB calling freq, not for FM. Nice to see you figured out the bandplan and moved to the FM portion. Get yourself an IC-9700 if you don't have one already and try some SSB and CW on 144 thru 1296mc. You will have tons of fun. de WE0H ..

    What Yagi did you use for 23cm? I have 3 23cm radios and am looking for one for POTA and home. Thanks

      I just used the rubber duck for 23 cm. The Yagi was for 33cm. I looked at a photo I took and it says DMS Wireless model YA90014, frequency 890-960MHz, gain 14dBi. I hope that helps!

      The Elk log periodic is great! It can be used hand-held (for satellites) or installed up in a fixed position. It packs ups nice too.
