AM mode has amazing audio with warm tones. Until relatively recently there was a 2M AM simplex Net in NYC and I was fortunate to make a few contacts. Great Video !
Cool Mike.. That is some massive equipment.. It’s amazing how tech has changed and compacted all that into our little radios of today. You are the AM King !! thx for sharing your adventures.. !! k0klb
It really puts things into perspective being there and operating that equipment. While I still lack some of the understanding, I have a much deeper appreciation for the innovation we’ve enjoyed.
That was very good Mike ! The AWA is great . I am sure you learned a lot from them. AM is a lot of fun ! 10 meter open helps as well. Most radios reduce power on AM because of carrier and both sidebands present. I have done 160 meter AM. For NY this is best like Dec and Jan into Feb. On a cold clear night . 160 meter will open right up and easy talk across country . Just need room for that Antenna. Their is a AM protation on 6 meters as well. You can do 2 Meter AM ! That is fun. The shortwave broadcast is mostly AM and some SSB . You really notice AM on QSB. You can still hear and copy just the volume drops and some noise. Not like FM . it goes to all static and no copy. Aircraft uses AM ! . My last visit to AWA some years ago pointed that out. Some digital modes will work on AM like SSTV . That just tones . We did that on CB with smartphone into mic . Also SMS TEXT MSG can be sent same way. just different app and tones. A FAX can be sent over AM. It is slow but that it how it was done at first. Just like over a landline . AM has done all that . Leering the history of AM is great and makes you want to use AM again. We still can ! AM POTA ! That was great ! 73 from Boston NY !

That so cool there was a 2m AM Net! That might be something fun to try and organize sometime.
Thanks for featuring that rare Collins.
It was so cool to operate. And the crew fixed it up pretty quickly after the fuses blew.
You are my first and only contact on AM!! It was really cool to hear myself!! Thanks for the QSO!! Thanks for the shoutout also!!
Thanks for the contact! It was great to get you in the log and it made my day. I knew 10m was open, so I was really hoping I could get at least one.

Thanks for checking it out! It was so much fun to see and get to operate some of that older gear. And it just sounds amazing too.

You're so right about the QSB on AM. It's so much more pronounced than SSB. I had a blast at the AWA and I learn something new every time I try AM.
