A Tale of Two Outriggers : Quick repairs on the Harbor Freight Trencher
Here is a reasonably chronological sequence of videos showing repairs I finally performed to improve my efficiency and TRACTION. The outriggers on the trencher were working against me. Not any more!
I failed to mention in the video that I also inserted washers in the joint pins on the boom during lubrication so the old girl no longer jingles like a chain.

    It's been about a year since you posted this video, Can you elaborate how the AW68 oil has held up , winter,summer , does the unit over heat the oil and slow down performance after a couple hours like we found the thinner oil does ? And is all the hoses suppose to be in the D-Ring on the boom knuckle ? We bought ours used and the orevious owner left 2 hoses out of tge D-Ring for some reason ... Somehow he managed to put the wheels on backwards to , that took some time to fix 😂

      I personally never saw any issues with temp or performance. I haven’t worked the machine as hard over the last year, though. As far as the hoses? Not really sure. Mine is a second hand unit, too, so I can’t vouch for its configuration. 😬

    Awesome! Thank you for the information on the fittings. I think I'll get on finding me a few spares, before I need them. I received my trencher in July, but I had contracted lyme disease, so I was out of commission for a while. I'll be getting it going soon. I am so excited. I have consumed every bit of info I can find on the machine, learning all (most?) the pitfalls, and things to look out for, and I'm fairly confident I can use it without breaking it... at least for a little while.

    5:45 Please stop using the Crescent wrench. You are doing it wrong and will round off nuts. Get a set of proper open end box wrenches. USE THE CORRECT SIZE, not SAE on meteric or metric on SAE. I like and use the Crescent wrench, but I snug it up on the nut/fitting and that prevents rounding off the corners of the hexagonal shape. You have a gap like using 1 size too large metric... The equipment you stop mangling will rapidly pay for the proper wrench set.

  • @fhuber7507
    @fhuber7507 Рік тому

    7:45 DO NOT USE A PIPE WRENCH! Go to a place like Tractor Supply and get a "Spud Wrench" Very handy version of the "Crescent" wrench with a tapered handle and actually has a flat on it for use as a hammer. Just a great tool to have with this trencher. You had an appropriate crescent wrench right there in the bucket! Or use an open end box wrench (which those fittings are made for... Actually the best solution.) Do not get the teeth of the pipe wrench on the threads. (which you did here...) as you can damage the fitting and need to replace it. You even used the pipe wrench backwards. Most likely way to cause damage before causing the fitting to turn. That was an example of "JUST NO."

    The trencher came with rebuild kit for 4 cylinders... Came with the seals in a bag. I still have my rebuild kits. 3 year old trencher. It takes just a few minutes to replace the seals. I bought my HF Trencher last Oct 2022. I watched a ton of different videos of many different UA-camrs (including all of yours) and I've seen several videos proving that exact same spot to be the weakest joint on the HF Trencher. I have done some upgrades/mods to mine already, but I have a ton more mods which I plan to do to mine. Many of the factory welds throughout the machine are of poor weld quality. Before putting mine through some hard work, I modified my outriggers, so that I shouldn't have the failure like I've seen in many other videos like yours in this one. On the outrigger feet, I ground down the factory welds to the base metal and then welded back over those joints as well as I welded a cap over the open end of the foot leg, that way dirt and mud can't build up inside the leg. And, I added a large gusset in the 90°of the foot and another gusset on the top where I place the end cap over leg opening. On the main outrigger arm that gets secured into the frame (the one where your problem happened), on that part I also ground down those factory welds and really beefed up those joints as I put down new welds there. And, on top of that, I put two half inch gussets on both sides of that weak point. I did this mod to the outriggers for both sides of my HF Trencher. I'm 100% confident I will not have any issues with my outriggers. I hate that you've had this problem, but seeing videos of other's problems has helped me to take some preventative actions. Thanks for your videos.

    • @shawnebaines8276
      @shawnebaines8276 Рік тому

      I’m hoping in the near future I can make time to do some upgrades to the welds on the machine, as well as some of the popular mods I’ve seen others do. I have to be honest - the main reason most of us choose the HF trencher is the price. It’s easy for us to expect the machine to hold up to anything we can throw at it, but it is a mere fraction of the cost of more ‘professional’ backhoes. A repair here and there is a small price to pay to own my very own excavator, and I try not to loose sight of that. 😊

      Straightening my outrigger feet would help, too. A lot of folks on UA-cam move their trenchers around by resting the bucket on a box blade or other implement and raising it off the ground to tow around.
