  • I started the cylinder repair on my trencher today. Things didn’t go entirely without a hitch or two. That’s why this is “Part 1.” Part 2 hasn’t happened yet. I work with pneumatics and fluidics on my day job, but this is my first experience working on a hydraulic system. Feel free to comment. Im doing this stuff to learn, always.

7:45 DO NOT USE A PIPE WRENCH!
Go to a place like Tractor Supply and get a "Spud Wrench" Very handy version of the "Crescent" wrench with a tapered handle and actually has a flat on it for use as a hammer. Just a great tool to have with this trencher.
You had an appropriate crescent wrench right there in the bucket!
Or use an open end box wrench (which those fittings are made for... Actually the best solution.)
Do not get the teeth of the pipe wrench on the threads. (which you did here...) as you can damage the fitting and need to replace it.
You even used the pipe wrench backwards. Most likely way to cause damage before causing the fitting to turn.
That was an example of "JUST NO."

The trencher came with rebuild kit for 4 cylinders...
Came with the seals in a bag.
I still have my rebuild kits. 3 year old trencher.
It takes just a few minutes to replace the seals. (I've done others)
The seals are pretty cheesy. If/when I need to redo a cylinder, I plan to look for better seals.

Unfortunately, my trencher is quite a few years older and second or third hand - so no seal kit. I don’t remember now if the kit was orderable from HF but don’t think so.

Same deal, I got mine March of 2021 and having problems with the same cylinder shown in this video. Was hoping I can find a video about replacing the seals. I have the kit that came with the machine somewhere.....
Got the idea to try and replace the seals before ordering a new cylinder.
      Any tips?

Probably a good idea to buy the new cylinder. You can always rebuild the old one for a spare.

Yeah. I have the new cylinder. I’m gonna tinker with the old one in my spare time. Once I get the proper fittings to finish this job I’ll get this thing back together. I’ll post all the information soon on the fittings situation. Thanks for watching.

How much was the new cylinder and do you have a part number? I need the same cylinder for my trencher after trying to do a job for someone in rocky conditions.
