Harvesting Onions | Do Sets = Bigger Harvests?

Maybe! Harvesting in the UK is in full swing at the allotment, and the onion crop is ready to come out, be taken home dried and prepared for storing. This year's onion harvest is from sets sown in cells in the spring and planted out in the allotment garden. None of the bulbs bolted, and most are a decent size, so is this the answer to how to grow onions? I also harvest cauliflower, runner beans...

I grew Honeycomb last year and found it to be mealy and bland. I was so disappointed in both the flavor and the texture. The first couple were a bit underripe, but I left the others that I tried for much longer to make sure they were super ripe and I still got very little flavor from them. I'm growing in the hot and humid southeastern United States, so I wonder if conditions could affect it? Sungold reminds me of fresh orange juice and it is by far my favorite cherry tom. I'm almost tempted to try Honeycomb again, but will likely wind up just gifting or trading the seeds.

That is a shame, and I would suggest trying a different packet of seeds, although your local temperatures might make a real difference. I think Jen Joy, who is also in the USA, didn't rate hers either, so I wonder if there's a link there somewhere.

I grew my first Ananas Noir this year. I couldn’t believe it when the first one to ripen weighed just under 1KG (875 Grammes). Grown in the greenhouse in a raised bed with our own horse manure compost I totally agree with your taste description. Very acid. I still think you can’t beat the flavour of the Noire de Crimee. Best ever tasting tomato which i grow every year without fail. Thanks for all the effort you have gone to in this mini series.

Truly enjoying your taste tests. You show the toms at their ripest. I’m also picking my fruits when they’ve coloured but further ripening them indoors in a warm place for a few days. I find this deepens the colours which intensifies flavour. Our toms atm are eaten as snacks by the family - eaten like sweets tbh🤩 thanks for inspiring me to grow more varieties next season 👍

Things sold as Black Krim/Black Russian seem to be highly variable. I've grown them for multiple years with seeds from different places and I get something different every time. One year I had all large beefsteak tomatoes that were delicious and sold me on the variety. Another I've had similar to what you've got here - a fairly normal looking slicing tomato but with darker flesh.

That's an interesting observation. I grew Black Russian last year here in Australia from locally bought seed. It was a very large, dark, pleated fruit, with a very rich complex umami tomato flavour. We loved it so much we've saved the seed for this year & the seedlings are growing strongly. I wonder if it will be the same this year?

You might well be right Kim, but I can only go by the seed supplier and seeds sent. I imagine there will always be some variations both in seed batches and the tomatoes on the plant. Im growing Alices Dream for the first time this year. They have grown well, are the size of large apples. I waitedcquite a few weeks for them to ripen. Tried The first ripe one the other day. It was very dark on top and had turned a deep orange. It definitely felt ripe. Very disappointed to find it had very little flavour. I grew these ones on Quad Grows in my greenhouse and used the supplied fertiliser combo as advised. I have one plant in my garden which is not ripe yet but Im hoping for better flavour. Do you think the flavour could be affected using the Quad Grow system of growing? They look so good and healthy too. Ive had two ripe ones so far but unfortunately they were both the same. I'm also growing a yellow F1 called honey Delight. These are very sweet and juicy with very little acid. I found the plant in the garden produced better flavoured tomatoes than the ones in the quad grows in the greenhouse although the green house ones were good too and ripened quicker. Curious to know if anyone else had a similar experience to my own? Really fancy trying Lucid Gem next year.

    • @veggieplot
      @veggieplot 4 дні тому

Several people have asked me if growing in the ground in my polytunnel helps with flavour and I wasn't sure. I know the weather has been so up and down that many plants have failed to produce their best this year. I am not sure about the Quad Grows as I do not have any although I do grow in Hoselock growbag troughs and they taste fine. There is compost involved and the greenhouse gets very warm so may be there is something in it. Lucid Gem are another great tasting tomato, I hope you get to taste some at their best.

I always look forward to these videos. I grow a few of the same varieties and its always so nice to hear other peoples' opinions on this niche topic.

I always wonder what people think and if they actually agree, seeing that we're all different and all like different flavours.

I love the ananis noir, Berkeley the die too, my tiny Tom’s aren’t ripening well so,the skins are tough 😢. Great update Chris, happy growing, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Thanks Ali. Do you get your Ananas Noire from Carmel Bella Farm? I'd love to try their seeds but they don't ship to the UK. I'm hoping the rest of mine pack more of a flavour punch. Happy growing to you too.

That's good to know and I need to finish picking all my tumbling toms this week as all it does at the moment is rain. Sun's out tomorrow I think 😂

I grow Black Krim tomatoes every year. Mine tend to be quite large, and everyone who eats them loves the flavor. I'm in California, and the temperature is much warmer. Maybe warmer climate gives more flavorful taste?

Hi Susan, your the third person to mention the Black Krim, so I think I need to try some different seeds. Having said that, we've had a very cold and wet summer here with little sunshine and I think may have had something to do with it.

I also have grown Thorburn’s Terracotta for the last few years. I enjoy the smoky sweet taste. I grow dwarf tomatoes. I like the Mallee Rose. It’s a pink tomato and very juicy and sweet. I am also growing the Lucky Swirl. It’s supposed to be a sweet dwarf but hasn’t quite ripened up yet.

Thanks for the suggestion about TT, I might give that a go next year. I like the dwarf varieties but they do tend to get very congested here and need a lot of thinning to stop the blight and other diseases wreaking havoc. The Uluru Ochre have been a great producer though and well worth the effort.

Ananas Noire is still my favourite over Alice's Dream, I really like the twang it has. Still waiting for my Sart Roloise to ripen. I am actually growing the three Berkeley Tie Dyes. I am looking forward to comparing the red, pink and green. I have grown the green before and it was a winner for me. Another great tomato that I have grown this year is the Thorburns Terra Cotta, such an unusual brown/orange burnished colour, nice rich flavour, managing to be savoury, sweet and tangy. Added to my top ten 😊. Really enjoying your taste tests, they give me great ideas for next year, thank you!

That's interesting about Ananas Noire and I had very high hopes here. I'm going to give it another go next year and see if they're any different. I'd be interested to know what you think about the other Tie Dyes.

Fantastic onions. I have grown red baron for years with absolutely great harvests and storing until spring. This year is the first year of failure. Well I say failure, about 20 very small onions form approximately 50 plus planted out. I will be definitely trying some different varieties next year.

Oh no, the weather has been a challenge this year hasn't it Red Barron are usually a safe bet for me too but not this year!

Those onions are impressive chris! That's settled. I'm growing mine direct in the soil next year. I had my best crops from dug begs actually .

Thanks Danny, I often start mine off in modules and transplant out, but not always. There's no point me digging as the soil is so thin on the allotment, Cornish stones everywhere! Your new plot is doing really well, especially those beans.

@veggieplot ahh really!! That's great! Thank you. Yes it's been a good year considering the plot isn't fully complete yet . The harvests have been wonderful. You get a mention in tonight's video actually! Danny 🌱
