VeggiePlot
United Kingdom
Приєднався 22 вер 2020
Hello, I'm Chris, and I grow a wide range of fruit, vegetables and flowers in Cornwall in the UK (Zone 9a).
VeggiePlot is where I share what I'm growing on my allotment, garden, polytunnel and greenhouse. I record my successes but also leave in my failures to show what growing your own is really like!
I'll also be sharing how I make my jams, chutneys, pickles, syrups, drinks, powders and chilli flakes, and any garden-related creative projects I get up to. Subscribe for hints, tips, reviews and interviews, plus see when I plant and harvest delicious, homegrown produce throughout the year.
My definition of how to "Grow Your Own" may differ from yours ;-) ... and that's okay!
P.S. You can buy a copy of my Record Book from my website, VeggiePlot.uk, links below.

Winter Vegetables - Replanting peppermint chard, tree nearly crushed my polytunnel + compost review!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.21 день тому
In today’s video, I’m tackling a mix of jobs around the garden and polytunnel while sharing some winter gardening updates. After Storm Darragh brought down a fir tree-thankfully missing the polytunnel-I’ve been busy tidying things up and getting the space ready for winter. I moved the Peppermint Chard from a raised bed into the polytunnel to keep it growing through the colder months, cleared ou...

November’s harvest always feels a bit special, doesn’t it? It’s the last big push before winter sets in, and it’s a chance to enjoy everything the plot has given over the year. This time, I’m bringing in a lovely mix-plenty of squash, some beautiful cabbages, leafy greens, and even a few lingering courgettes. It’s a real reminder of how much the allotment can provide with a bit of care. I’ll ta...

Harvesting Onions | Do Sets = Bigger Harvests?
Переглядів 7134 місяці тому
Maybe! Harvesting in the UK is in full swing at the allotment, and the onion crop is ready to come out, be taken home dried and prepared for storing. This year's onion harvest is from sets sown in cells in the spring and planted out in the allotment garden. None of the bulbs bolted, and most are a decent size, so is this the answer to how to grow onions? I also harvest cauliflower, runner beans...

I honestly think that the mystery tomato is a black beauty! The ones that you grew were purple, and maybe they weren’t black beauties, cuz they look exactly like ur tomato that u don’t know the name! And they are indeed excellent tomatoes,I was very surprised at the color of yours, and especially u didn’t love them,I really don’t think they’re black beauties….does anyone else agree
Fantastic video, thank you! Have you come across the blaby special? I can't find a supplier online.
the unknown looks like black beauty to me.......I have 4 vines growing now and they look exactly the same.
Thanks for the feedback Robert, I never had much luck with Black Beauty and need to get some fresh seeds for when I decide to try them again. Maybe in 2025, we'll see.
Don't bother with sets anymore but I have sowed my onion seeds and I'm looking forward to this growing season with optimism 🙂
I don't blame you as they can be so infuriating. Here's to a bountiful 2025, it'll soon be time to start planning and looking through my seed stash! Happy New Year.
Hi Chris. Loved the reminder of all the jobs I’ve gotta do at my allotment. As a disabled no dig gardener I gotta dig out some old red currents but I’m enjoying the rest. And haven’t found a willing volunteer/ victim. Lol New year, new greenhouse at home. Plenty of starts to sow in Jan once we’ve dug out the redcurrants. By the way, how do you get rid of comfrey mine is getting to be a pain. Regards Kim. X
Thanks Kim. I'm guessing you have the invasive comfrey. I looked it up and there are a few ways which are best used together. The main tap root is a big problem so deep digging to get it out can do it. Covering in black plastic, constant pulling, cutting back, and preventing seeds from spreading can all help too. Good luck and a happy New Year to you and yours.
Oh It is too early for me … and the weather is damp and grey … so no gardening yet but I know that my compost is well churned by a family of brown rats … it is lovely and crumbly
Bloomin' rats were a pain in my side last year although they seem to have abandoned the polytunnel for now! It certainly is chilly and wet out there at the moment although today is not too bad, have you had lots of snow? Just a couple of months before we start all over again.
@ no snow at all. But it ‘s cold 🥶
They all look great 👍
Which will you choose Jake?
Fab tips and update, thanks Chris . Happy New Year, enjoy the celebrations 🎉🥳❤️ x
Thanks Linda, a happy New Year to you and yours too. Now to start planning and dreaming of 2025.
I'm new to your channel and new to gardening, I'd be interested in the chilli seeds please
Thank you for the feedback, I'll get my skates on and put them up on my website soon.
Charles dowding, king of no dig. Best out there, following n learning from him xx
He certainly is, but the main thing I think makes Charles stand out, is that he is a practising food grower who has made some of his living from growing and supplying food to customers. He's not just a 'influencer'. He really knows his stuff and even if he hadn't championed no-dig he'd be worth learning from. A real inspiration.
Those all look good. ❤🍅
Some better than others but all worth a try.
I'm going to try to grow the Alice's Dream in 2025. There are so many tomatoes to pick from it's hard to choose.
I heard there are about 10,000 varieties of tomatoes to choose from! Alice's Dream is one of the best I have tried but there could be many thousands more, it drives me crazy thinking about it!
Cheers Chris. Great video. Wishing you & yours a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Happy growing 🙂
Thank you and a happy New Year to you and yours too. It seems almost a distant memory now and it will soon be time to start planning for 2025.
@@veggieplot yes, so exciting! 🙂
I really trying to increase the amount that I'm over wintering
Me too, although I left it a little late again this year. Still, it gives us a moment to reset and think about other things in life. I'll be starting to plan soon and rummaging through all my seeds, it might be time for some different and fresh new ideas.
Merry Christmas to you and your family love the videos
Thank you Robert, and a Happy new Year to you and yours too.
Merry Christmas
...and a Happy New Year to you Anne... it seems ages away now.
When will you put the onions out please
Apologies for the slow reply. I am not sure yet although they are shooting up well so I'll probably check the roots to see how they have filled out the cells and then decide. They are still in the polytunnel at the moment.
@@veggieplotthat’s ok no worries it’s been Xmas , I put some in outside covered them with fleece til I saw some sprouting then left it off and the birds have been pulling them. I’m thinking to start some more like you in the-tunnel now and get plenty come summer. Garlic also they are always good for sharing with the family . Thanks
Merry Xmas
Apologies for the slow reply Adrian, I hope you had a good Christmas too and here's to a bountiful 2025.
👍👍👍 Merry Christmas 🎅
Apologies for the slow reply Michael, I hope you had a good Christmas, and a Happy New Year to you and your family.
Nice one Chris thanks.
Thanks John, happy New Year to you and yours.
Merry Christmas🙏🙏🎅🎅🎅
Thank you Sylvia, and a Happy New Year to you.
Sadly even the compost I buy that is top of the line has sticks and twigs 😢😢. But I sift and then use the big bits in the bottom of pots. Hope you have a very Merry Christmas, Ali 🥶☔️🎄🧑🎄🇨🇦
I do find it strange that they don't just sieve it like we do, especially the expensive stuff. I know there are industrial sized sieves so it can't be that difficult. Happy New Year to you Ali.
Thank you for the tips of winter jobs.📝 Do you have a heater in your Polytunnel?
You’re welcome 👍🏻. I don’t have a heater in the polytunnel although I have thought about creating an enclosed area within it and heating it somehow.
yes I would be interested in some mad hatter chilli seeds, I much prefer a milder sweeter variety.
Thank you for the feedback Pauline, I'll see what I can do.
wow i can’t believe you still have chilli’s - i need to win the lottery so that i can have enough space for a polytunnel at home ❤
Yep, they took a while to get going this year and they're still soldiering on, crazy weather is keeoing them warm! I built my polytunnel out of scaffold and timber which was much cheaper than off the shelf. You can custom the design and size too which is handy. Would a video on how I did it be useful?
@ a video going through materials and how you built it would be great thank you
We had high winds again last night which took out half a conifer in the front yard. Luckily it was no where near anything. Very Christmasy chillies ❤. Merry Christmas to you and the family, Ali 🧑🎄🎄🇨🇦
Hey Ali, thank you, seasons greeting to you and yours too. We had winds again yesterday but there isn't much left to blow down!!
Wow, that was lucky, Chris!
Yes, I am grateful it didn't blow the other way as it would have been a disaster.
Those chilli's look amazing.
They're good fun to grow and not too hot, however I think I grow them because I like the look of them! I have enough dried spaghetti chilli to last a life time!
My relative lost her brand new 16ft greenhouse and new garden shed that she built back in October and absolutely soul destroying And some neighbours had damage to cars so we can all count our blessings as only my low tunnel got wrecked so can't complain.
Oh my that sounds awful, it would be soul destroying to loose the polytunnel or greenhouse as they are so integral to what I love doing. I feel for you and your relative. I hope they can salvage things for next year.
Oh my....so glad the tree did not do damage to your structures. Nice that there is a bright side of more light as well. Happy Holidays 🌲🎅🥳
Happy Holidays to you too, and fingers crossed for no more crazy storms this winter! I was really lucky this time around.
What about n.ireland
I am sure they were blasted too but we didn't hear about it.
@veggieplot sorry was meaning your discount code for your calendar
So lucky the tree fell away from your polytunnel.
I was certainly lucky this time around. Last year some glass blew out of the greenhouse but that was okay this time.
Hi Chris 👋 Geez good job that tree went the other way. Good news though as better light for your polytunnel 👍 Planner and Calender look fab. We found our planner most useful this year. Those chillis look amazing and those little peppers so cute. Good job we don't have smelly vision with that compost 😂 Peppermint Chard looks good. Merry Xmas to you and family 🎄 🎁 ❤️ x
Hi Linda, thank you and a Merry Xmas to you and yours too. I sure was lucky with that tree as it could so have gone the other way and wrecked everything. I dread to think. You're right about the compost, it still smells in there now... quite honky! Not that I mind if it makes the plants grow stronger. The chard seems to have coped with the move and definitely looks healthier than the plants out on the allotment which were shredded by the storm! Hopefully no more high winds for a while.
Have ordered your calendar, so glad you reminded me as I didn't get one last year. Very excited to receive the chilli. My goodness you were so lucky with that tree. All the best Jo.
Brilliant, thanks Jo, I packed everything up today and will pop it in the post tomorrow, (Monday) including the spaghetti chilli.
You definitely got lucky with that tree not hitting the poly tunnel. Hopefully the extra light at that end will be beneficial to your plants.
I sure was lucky Rowena, and I think the extra light will certainly improve things next year. 🤞🏻 another massive tree doesn’t take its place.
Just to say I'm over the moon with my calendar, excellent quality and really beautiful 🏵️ First entry in the record book and will be using it for planning 2025 season 👌📕 Have a happy festive season Chris 🎄🤗💚
I am so pleased you like it and hope you have a splendid growing season 2025. Planning is half the fun I think 🎄✨🌱
How much for calendar please

I grew green zebra this year and loved it, IMO it's the best tomato for a BLT you can find because the high acidity meshes incredibly well with bacon. I'm in the US and mine looked very similar to yours.
You can’t beat a decent BLT with a proper slicer in there. You’re making me hungry now 😂🍅
wow! its rare we get to see an unpaid youtuber try something to solve a problem! Really love your idea and reviews even if i wont find anything other than Gardena products this side of Earth. I wanted to understand and see how i could make do at my offgrid patch of land to grow stuff by gravity and i found it. i'll adapt with rainwater and gutters but i'm onto something. thank you
Loving your pure pleasure & pride in your beautiful cauliflower ❤
It was quite a surprise as all previous years had been a flop re. cauliflowers. We’ll have to see if I can do it again in 2025 🤞🏻
I just bought some tomato seeds from his website and it came with a hand written thank you card!
Thank you for your order Sydney, much appreciated and I hope they do well for you in 2025 👍🏻🍅
Wow ❤ Masha Allah ❤ very nice video ❤
Hey, thank you. Apologies for the slow reply and a Happy New Year to you.
LOVELY LEEKS, mine always get rust
Thanks Pauline, mine will get rust too later on which reminds me to pop up to the allotment and harvest some more asap. Apologies for the slow reply and a Happy New Year to you.
Excellent bean harvest!! Hahaha I think the warmer latter part of the year helped the courgettes for sure!
You're right, they certainly gave it their all at towards the end which was a pleasant surprise.
Great squash harvest.
I was really surprised by them this year as I planted them out so late! Apologies for the slow reply and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
Great harvest 👏
Thank you.
That's decent crop of pupkins Chris and thankfully the mild weather kept the frost away to let them mature.
Thanks, I was lucky considering I didn't think I'd get any this year.
I'm amazed that nothing has eaten those low hanging beans as the mice ans slugs feasted on mine.
The netting kept them off most of the season but I was lucky once they had dried. I lost a few to slugs but not many this year.
Wow what an amazing harvest! My squash just get eaten by the wild life if I don't take them before now!
Thanks Nik, I think it must come down to the local environment and what wildlife is in the area. The garden at home has been a challenge for me this year, especially towards the end of the season. Everything seemed to get eaten! Apologies for the slow reply and a Happy New Year to you and your family.
