Splitting ZX7R Crankcases - Ep13 | ZX7R Restoration | Tom's Workshop
In for a penny? In for a pound!
It made sense to split the cases, partly to give everything a good look over, but also to make it a lot easier to do a good job of cleaning and painting the cases.

Where are you?
Stop removing the caps. They aren't designed to be removed. Yamaha and sumitomo dont sell replacement seals and and the torque settings haven't been released.
1:10 I’ve always had great luck using a penny or a small aluminum object like an aluminum nail. Great video
When I had my 97 zx7 , I ran and indigo exhaust that went 4into 2 almost all the way the the exhaust can , this was supposed to help with the torque, if I remember right. I also ran a Spondon swingarm, Attack triple clamp, Simbimoto carborn Kevlar bodywork .I made my own headlight mounts and rear brake and turn signals mounts , made my own instrument cluster and a bunch of other stuff . I miss that bike , the front end was so planted that it inspired you to carve the twisties or the track!
That’s so cool, I love hearing about how people used to make these bikes their own, such a good base to start with. That’s cool that you make your own bits too 👌🏼
Sound work. One point, those were buckets, not lifters - those are found on push rod engines
That’s true, I look back fondly at my naivety on this project 😂
0:13 the linkage in the blueprint animation just looked wrong 😭
I’m glad someone else picked up on that, I chuckled to myself while animating that bit 😂
Hey Tom, the chain guide on my bike was totally dry-rotted and it crumbled like a cookie when I last moved the bike. I see you here at :50secs removing yours. I'm a super noob of a mechanic but I want to learn. Could you share with me how to install the new chain guide? PS, I haven't been able to find a replacement for less than $118 dollars. It seems a bit expensive for a piece of plastic. Are there options?
Ah that’s a pain, I know finding good spares for them is tricky. From memory it was two m6 bolts and a slot that it fitted into on the swingarm. I have a feeling I go over it in a later video in the series maybe.
Nice job! The first time I took apart an in-line 4 cylinder (my 90 FZR1000) I bought two engines, a 1985 FZ750 and a 1898 FZR1000. I used the 750 for a practice engine to pull apart and rebuild (I wanted the 6 speed transmission for the FZR1000) and I took the 1000 engine apart and put it back together a couple of times to see what mods I would need to run the 750 transmission. Best thing I ever did, I got good at pulling / reassembling those in-line fours. I wish I could find a decent ZX7 here in the states. Most are wrecked basket cases or else they want way too much $$$. Cheers!
Cheers! That sounds like the smart way to learn, I quite fancied a similar approach, with a donor engine. I didn’t initially plan to open this one up either, but kept finding reasons to check all was good 😂
What’s happening with the build?
Been held up getting the cases vapour blasted, and work gets crazy this time of year unfortunately. Won’t be long 🤞
If it was me?? I’d replace everything that needed replaced. The end. To me 2 big things on a bike : Engine/ trans. Those are money holes!!! Taking it all apart I agree with. Take a look!! Believe me I’ve seen a lot. PS….. I’m a bike mechanic
Cheers Joe, appreciate the tips! Keep em coming! Currently inside the crankcase and measuring everything.
Love these videos and the zx7R, 'the last true superbike' is not even remotely true though 😂
Haha cheers, for me it’s where my love for them peters out. I also kinda like the 750 size as a happy medium too.
Watching this almost makes me want to find an engine and strip it just for the experience. As you say, the incredible engineering that goes into building an engine like this is both amazing and fascinating..not to mention mind boggling.
100% agree, I think I'd always thought I'd buy an old busted engine for my first strip down so it didn't matter if I screwed anything up. But strangely, doing it on my own engine means the stakes are high, which is forcing me to read up, plan ahead and really learn about it as I go. I'd like to think in 10 years time I'll watch this back and laugh at how careful I'm being an nervous, whilst building a custom engine for a bespoke bike I've designed!
Hi tom! Nice videos, i don t undestand really well english but your videos help a lot! One question, where do you find the driver for the guide brush? On ebay the price in crazy. Thank you!
Hey, thank you! I think I picked it up from Amazon, it's the Sealey 43mm one. It was about £35. Very similar to this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275675691333?chn=ps&_ul=GB&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=275675691333&targetid=2361047800699&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9192327&poi=&campaignid=21690864867&mkgroupid=167672855455&rlsatarget=pla-2361047800699&abcId=10027088&merchantid=113586215&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_qG5BhDTARIsAA0UHSLeH4X5owYnWDheiGAmYHOzxoTa0Q7LsaHhzZYLksIA-lVcFTaRACMaAhwtEALw_wcB
do you have make convert zx7rr carb system to fuel injection system?
Not sure, I imagine there's a way using a later model or a FI system from a similar bike but I can imagine it's far from simple
@@tomsworkshopprojects i hope you make the tutorial videos with us, hello from malaysia
cool😎
Hi Tom, So I am still not able to get my 2000 ZX7 started... I installed a new Clutch lever switch, it helped to get the starter motor spinning in turn turning the motor, yet no start... And this entire time the neutral light does not come on? I can move the rear wheel on the track stand freely as I select neutral position with my hand...No neutral light... removed the Switch Comp part and it's all intact the little brass pin is intact...a bit of oil in that area... I did order a new Switch-Comp... What I'd like to ask is what are some reasons why I'm not getting the neutral light to come on? And when I replace the Switch-Comp part do I have to remove the fuel tank to connect it? I do not know where it connects to...? Thanks for your help!
Hi mate, that’s frustrating. Especially when it feels like you’re chasing your tail. I had no neutral light on the FZR and that was down to corrosion on the contacts where bulb connects to the loom. A bit of poking around with a multimeter could help see where the problem is. In terms of the starting issue, I’m assuming you’re confident you’re getting a good spark, decent compression and fuels getting in? Or do you suspect the neutral light issue is stopping the spark?
That manual helped😂😂😂. Cyclmer??? I see.
Between that one and the Haynes, plus a service manual PDF, but I’ve found the Clymer is the most detailed
New sub here - just caught up with all your videos. Really enjoying them actually, and you seem so organised with your labelled boxes, and cardboard templates for your bolts etc. Where do you get your replacements from - is it all from the dealers, or you do use somewhere else? It also shows how much info you get from those manuals.
Hi mate, welcome! Appreciate the comment. I tend to get new OEM bits from Fowlers Parts, used bits from EBay or Facebook groups, and a lot of pattern parts from WeMoto.
Oh man, I felt your pain with that snapped tool. We've all been there. One moment, one lapse in concentration is all it takes. I thought the way you went back and forth with the first grub screw was really smart. Then you took out the impact... You're doing such a meticulous job that you shouldn't be too hard on yourself. I'm currently restoring a '92 Fireblade in a similar way so your journey on this is inspiring. Thank you.
Haha cheers, yeah I think part of it is the fact that I have to live everything twice, once in real life and then again when editing the videos, so it’s painful to watch 😂 Thanks for you support!
good on ya Tom, happy to see some new content, keep it coming!
Awesome work, cracking humour.
Haha, cheers. Definitely aiming not to take myself too seriously 😂
Awesome video series on the zx-7r. Made me realise how much I miss my old red 7r, so I went out and got myself another one (in green this time). Discovered your channel quite recently and binge watched the first 12 videos on the zx-7r. Delighted this latest video now out, content is superb. Really looking forward to the rebuild. Keep up the good work!
Ah mate, that’s awesome, thank you. I really appreciate the support! Hopefully the next few will come together quite quickly 🤞
Finally
Grande Tom! Altro bellissimo video! ;)
Check for wear on the 3rd/4th gear selecter fork and also the gear to make sure the shoulders either side of the gear isn't worn badly, if the shoulder has gone you will wear the forks quickly and get gear selection problems. I stock all the gaskets and engine seals Tom if you want a set.
Wow, great tips thanks mate. Which is the 3rd/4th fork? I’ll keep an eye out, though gear changes had always been smooth so I’m hoping all is good in there. Awesome, I’ve picked up a few gaskets already but not managed to find a cylinder base gasket yet, or only as part of the full set.
Been a long time coming but well worth the wait. Love the attention to detail and clear explanations.
It’s been a challenge getting time during the summer but back in at a good pace now so fingers crossed I should be more frequent for the remainder of the engine build
Personally I'd have got the whole frame and swing arm coated black maybe?
The black frame models are actually my favourite colour schemes, but I’ve definitely not got budget to paint / source the right colour panels, so I’ve gone for the compromise of the correct colour combo, but the brushed finish.
Just got introduced to your channel and yesterday binged episode 1-10 loving your work and thorough explanations.
Cheers mate, I wouldn’t get used to the frequency you’ll have been working through at 😂
Yoshi +4 advanced and white clutch springs. That bikes had some love at some point
Haha I know right, It’s been good news so far, touch wood this is all just for peace of mind and a great learning experience 🤞
Hey Tom. Saving these vids of yours to watch. Good info!!! As motorcycle mech. This just great!!!
Cheers! I’m trying to show as much as possible for anyone’s future reference, hence all the oops moments 😂
Awesome work😍
You’ve got a good one, that crank looks really good.
Magnificent job! Looking at this series of videos has given me the confidence to...........finally realise that I could never do something like this myself. Loving the channel Tom, keep up the great content.
😂 I still feel like that myself to be fair, I’d always planned to have a play on an old knackered engine but it turns out it’s one I’m really quite keen to not fuck up 😂
Love the content brother. You wouldn't happen to have that extra headlight assembly would ya? I'm looking for one for my zx7r.
I sold the old one straight away I’m afraid, although I did see one on eBay the other day when I was looking for other bits. Hopefully you find one 🤞
while your in there id change your clutch pack height to activate the slipper clutch, did mine back in the day was alot better.
I’ve had a few point me in that direction, I need to look into it a little more to understand it all.
Great to see you at it again brother! We have finished one of our two. The second is going to be our winter project.
Well done good job mate, comment flat arse just like yer mum, sorry...did make me 😂😂😂
Cracking effort Tom. Even the pros aren’t doing this stuff everyday, and we’re certainly not being paid loads of money for it either, ha! Hoping the engine stand is on order for reassembly?
Haha, you should be 💰😂 Cheers, yeah I might try and borrow one, unless I find one cheap second hand. Or make something myself 🤔
Good work man. The zxr750 and following zx7r is my favourite 90s bikes together with the 916. 😃
Nice work 👍 can't wait when you start closing it ✌️
Same! Looking forward to that first press of the starter ⚡️
@@tomsworkshopprojects It will be a great emotion! 👏
Hey Tom nice job! Don't get the bearing bores vapour blasted as tests show dimensional changes after blasting your main brgs looked really good love these bikes Is the alternator belt driven on these
Cheers! Yeah I’m going to deliver the cases to the blasters with the journals taped to be safe. They do look pretty good, I’m quite pleased. It’s chain driven, from the top sprocket behind the clutch assembly.
That old saying “if a jobs worth doing” A fine job you are doing! P.s might need a loan of your mask n snorkel lol 😂
Haha cheers, yeah I felt I needed to point out why it’d taken me two months to get another video out 😂
cracking job, keep the vids coming
Nicely done Tom. I'm sure now you realise why we use engine stands.
Haha yeah I’d hoped to avoid it as I’m so tight on space, i may need try and borrow one or pick up a second hand one for reassembly.
Awesome job Tom very proud
