New subscriber. Nice to see these older sports bikes preserved. I had a 1989 FZR1000EXUP which I owned and enjoyed for 15 years. Did a restoration after 10 years ownership, then after another 5 years I part exchanged it for a mint 1999 TL1000R which was about 6 years ago This will be preserved in it's perfect condition for as long as I'm able to ride it. Purchased a 1989 GSXR1100 earlier this year that was part of a bike collection for 20 years, so I'll do a full mechanical recommission first followed by a bodywork restoration - it's in great condition but I want it perfect. To me both the ZX7R and the TLR were the WOW bikes when they came out, and I just love that v-twin engine in the TLR. Looking forward to the rest of your restoration.
Cheers, yeah I enjoyed restoring the EXUP, though happier to be restoring a slightly more iconic bike. I’d love to have a TL or an SP1/2 some day. Even riding an SV makes me want a v-twin 😂
Great to see my old bike again, so good I owned it twice! I dropped the bike at Cadwell and had the fairings painted at a bodyshop in Louth but I was never happy with the finish so I didn't finish putting it back together and swapped it for a dolomite sprint. Really looking forward to seeing finished.
Yes, that's my actual old bike and I really regret getting rid. Spur of the moment! I originally bought the bike from premier bikes in Doncaster, the frame and swing arm were already polished I then sold it and bought an x11 which I couldn't get on with so bought the zx7r back again. I've done five or six track days at Cadwell on the Kawasaki and it's great fun just warm your tyres up before getting carried away!
Never the fastest, certainly not now and yet still the absolute business. My ZX12R is certainly quicker but I do really want a ZX7R - just so Good looking.
I have both a zx7r and is the x12r.... They are both amazing bikes in their own way. Not necessarily the best at any particular thing but overall they have very exciting rides. The ZX7 in the corners the ZX12 for just raw tq... Both with tons of personality

When I had my 97 zx7 , I ran and indigo exhaust that went 4into 2 almost all the way the the exhaust can , this was supposed to help with the torque, if I remember right. I also ran a Spondon swingarm, Attack triple clamp, Simbimoto carborn Kevlar bodywork .I made my own headlight mounts and rear brake and turn signals mounts , made my own instrument cluster and a bunch of other stuff . I miss that bike , the front end was so planted that it inspired you to carve the twisties or the track!

Splurged on in a full titanium Akrapovic for mine, but never quite got the carbs set up correctly afterwards. Still think they have one of the best looking front fairings.

I've been tied up with work and moving but I've got a nice new 2-car garage to continue my '87 FZR1000 resto in. Hope you're doing well and all the best - Ken. p.s. Love the blue coveralls.
Cheers Ken! Yeah I think I’ve got about 5 videos worth of bits done so far so should be able to get videos out closer together than last time (for a while!) Sounds good about the new garage! I’ve been following your Genesis vids, really entertaining!
@@tomsworkshopprojects Wow!! Thanks so much. I work 3 weeks away from home at a time and the last time off I burned it all moving. I'll be home in two weeks and I'll be stripping the FZR to the frame and getting it completely overhauled like the Virago. I can't wait to watch your next videos...keeps me inspired too. Cheers.
So, the upper front fairing is held on by the mirror bolts and just two other bolts...? I saw you loosen one...but, not any other ones...? It would help me as I am removing my upper fairing... Thanks!
Trying to think back, as it was a while ago 😂 I think it is just the two bolts and the mirror mounts. If you can see the two bolts, the fairing bracket comes off with the nose cone as one (just having to disconnect the loom connections)
Cheers! It was actually their first Budget Bike Battle vids that got me on the “SRAD or ZX7R for next bike” route 😂 obviously sided with the green option, but am a little disappointed they’re now ripping them up for weight saving and upgrades. Loses the whole magic in my opinion.
Nice little video. Are you going to do the clean air mod when you put her back together ? If your looking for a new system for her. Do not buy a black widow. Your looking for a akra or similar that has balance pipes between the headers
Yeah I’ll look into it, though the bike ran really nice before the strip. I’ve been warned about the black widow systems, I’ve been keeping an eye out for Akra systems with the balance pipes, though they demand a big chunk of change!
Always been one of my favorite bikes. And these days literally NOBODY has one. Id like to pick one up and do a ZX10R Tail Conversion on it. Andnone of those tiny double barrel shotgun slip-ons, one of the race Slip ons. They scream.
no one except for the 140 or so people that have put comments in this vid! I kid, but I agree with you that they weren't nearly as popular at the time, and are now even more rare to find.
Hi Tom, really nice video series! So I disassembled the throttle unit on the handle bar and now I am having difficulty re attaching it all together! So, the throttle cable lays first in the channel then on op of that is the other cable with the adjuster unit... Yet, it just doesn't want to all fit together as I go to fit the back half to the front part...? Did you shoot any videos of this operation? Thanks!
Hi mate, cheers! Unfortunately I haven’t got as far as putting the throttle back together I’m afraid. From memory on the FZR, there was quite a bit of stuff that all had to be in the right place for it to close properly, and there was the locating dowel on the bar to line up. Hopefully you’ve sorted it before I get to mine but I’ll make sure to make it clear in the video just in case!
@@tomsworkshopprojects Hi Tom, Yes I figured it out... The channel-guide piece had to be aligned properly... And you reminded me to align the stub to the divot in the handlebar... It all went together nicely... Thanks!

The disassembly was probably about 8 hours but it would be nearly half that if I wasn’t filming it all 😂 So far across the project it’s hard to really estimate as I haven’t really tracked it. I think it’ll easily be 100 hours or so and over £1000 spent so far, but I started the project in summer ‘22 so it’s all been spread over 2 years of evenings and Sunday afternoons.
@@tomsworkshopprojects Thanks Tom for that info thats great, our is to be a winter project putting it back to perfect mint condition as its just old and tired as they all are when you look at buying these bikes.

@@tomsworkshopprojects Hi Tom, Thanks for your response! I'm trying to figure out how to get to the back bolts holding the grab rails to the seat subframe!? I don't want to break any of the tabs!!! How did you do it...? Thanks!
Hi Tom, So I am still not able to get my 2000 ZX7 started... I installed a new Clutch lever switch, it helped to get the starter motor spinning in turn turning the motor, yet no start... And this entire time the neutral light does not come on? I can move the rear wheel on the track stand freely as I select neutral position with my hand...No neutral light... removed the Switch Comp part and it's all intact the little brass pin is intact...a bit of oil in that area... I did order a new Switch-Comp... What I'd like to ask is what are some reasons why I'm not getting the neutral light to come on? And when I replace the Switch-Comp part do I have to remove the fuel tank to connect it? I do not know where it connects to...? Thanks for your help!
Hi mate, that’s frustrating. Especially when it feels like you’re chasing your tail. I had no neutral light on the FZR and that was down to corrosion on the contacts where bulb connects to the loom. A bit of poking around with a multimeter could help see where the problem is. In terms of the starting issue, I’m assuming you’re confident you’re getting a good spark, decent compression and fuels getting in? Or do you suspect the neutral light issue is stopping the spark?
hello I am French 🇫🇷 I have exactly the same bike can you give me the reference of the central stand (the link) for zx7r by the way I love your videos I'm on episode 4 for now

thank you very much for the links it's much more expensive than the others but for quality there is no choice thanks again . if you take a tour in France I would be delighted to welcome you
Great to see. Hopefully gives me inspiration to get my old girl stripped and treat her to a couple of classic race meets next year. They are so over engineered it is beyond belief but my god they are something else aren't they?
I bought one of those ZX7 in 2000 myself it's a great handling machine I mean super super duper handler. Only problem was that weight if you didn't run a stock chain or heavier you were stretching chains to death tried to run a smaller chain I was messing with sprockets and yeah no good I was stretching Chainz like water. Especially when I was running slicks work on the slicks was just eating up the chains junk beautiful f****** bike they made it too f****** heavy if they made that bike lighter it would be unstoppable.
Yeah it was very nearly perfect. Though in this day and age I’m very content with the imperfections as it’s probably one of the last true 750 superbikes.

So glad to see a new video and even happier you only stripped the bike. Can't wait to see the progress on this one. I've been tied up with work and moving but I've got a nice new 2-car garage to continue my '87 FZR1000 resto in. Hope you're doing well and all the best - Ken. p.s. Love the blue coveralls.
Cheers Ken! Yeah I think I’ve got about 5 videos worth of bits done so far so should be able to get videos out closer together than last time (for a while!)
Sounds good about the new garage!
Cheers.
Zx7r greetings from Germany❤
You done well with header nuts
Yeah I was fearing the worst, but did ok. I don’t think the bikes spent a lot of time in bad weather, compared to others I’ve worked on at least.
This might just inspire me to get my 98 P3 back on the road, owned it since new but it hasn't moved in over 10 years
Easily done when life gets in the way, hopefully it won’t take a huge amount to get it back on the road?
I wish I had put all the removed fasteners in marked bags that's for sure
So, the upper front fairing is held on by the mirror bolts and just two other bolts...? I saw you loosen one...but, not any other ones...? It would help me as I am removing my upper fairing... Thanks!
Trying to think back, as it was a while ago 😂 I think it is just the two bolts and the mirror mounts. If you can see the two bolts, the fairing bracket comes off with the nose cone as one (just having to disconnect the loom connections)
This is what 44Teeth should’ve done, a proper restore..
Just had this recommended - easiest subscribe decision ever lol
Cheers! It was actually their first Budget Bike Battle vids that got me on the “SRAD or ZX7R for next bike” route 😂 obviously sided with the green option, but am a little disappointed they’re now ripping them up for weight saving and upgrades. Loses the whole magic in my opinion.
I got a zx7 because of bb1 on 44teeth too. I do have a bit of a crush on zxbikes as my other bike is a zx9 C2.
Just subscribed Tom excellent content
Just found your channel, I already subscribed..naz from 🇲🇾
Cheers! Welcome 👍🏻
❤🏴 love from Scotland 🏴 ❤
Cheers!
Hello from Italy. ZX-7R P4 owner
Thanks!
You've just gained yourself another subscriber. I am planning to do this with mine one day. I hope you complete the series. I've watched a few folks resto vids on the ZX7R and none of them do a complete strip and rebuild or complete the job.
Good luck Tom! 🙏🤞👍
Haha, pressure’s on now! Thanks for the sub, I’ll go as far as budget allows but hoping to make it a rather clean example.
Great video mate, love the content on the older bikes 🏍️ ❤keep up the amazing content bro 😎 new sub here.
Cheers mate, thanks for the support 👌🏼
If you aim to restore to RRC levels you're on the right track. Good luck, stay enthusiastic. I'm subscribed. 🤞🏻
Cheers! Haha I’ll do my best 👍🏻
let me be the first to comment mate & say welcome back and a massive well done to you for taking the leap again
hope the channel grows from strength to strength ( ill be sharing the sh!t out of it )
and be great to see the bikes in the flesh one day
👍👍👍🫡🫡
Cheers Brian! I’m excited to be in such a better workshop than I was on the last one, which makes it so much easier to find the energy to get stuck in!
Yes Tom 🙌🏼👊🏼
Love the bike. I got a 96
I had a zx7-r which I turned into a track bike, I loved it at the time I had a branded new R1. I was quicker and more confident on the zx7 on track
That’s good to hear, I’m looking forward to building confidence on it, it felt good on the road, but obviously couldn’t push too far 😂
Just found your channel. Great stuff. Subscribing from Jupiter
Hope your internet speed are ok out there 🪐
Beautiful
excellent project! I have the same motorcycle from 1996. This and other videos you make about the Kawasaki ZX7R are very helpful to me. Thank you very much, I look forward to the next video. LIKE and subscribe to your channel
Good work
Beau travail...
Hi Tom
All in all how many hours did this take you and at what cost ive just purchased one and am contemplating on doing exactly the same
The disassembly was probably about 8 hours but it would be nearly half that if I wasn’t filming it all 😂
So far across the project it’s hard to really estimate as I haven’t really tracked it. I think it’ll easily be 100 hours or so and over £1000 spent so far, but I started the project in summer ‘22 so it’s all been spread over 2 years of evenings and Sunday afternoons.
@@tomsworkshopprojects Thanks Tom for that info thats great, our is to be a winter project putting it back to perfect mint condition as its just old and tired as they all are when you look at buying these bikes.
these really are lovely bikes, what you gonna do with rad, straighten the fins or buy new?
I’m going to try and sort this one, it’s not *that* bad, so think I could improve it, plus a coat of paint.
@tomsworkshopprojects I tried messing about with the old rad, but I eventually went for an aftermarket one (black and not silver unfortunately) with more cores, etc, and my ZX7R runs so much cooler. Night and day difference. Enjoyed the video thanks
@@davidhall9597 yeah that’s a good option, changes like that make a lot of sense if they add reliability or safety to old bikes 👍🏻
@@davidhall9597 Do they have a habit of running hot??
@@uhtred7860 going through towns or at traffic lights mine used to get hot quickly. Not Ducati hot but l could watch the needle rise quickly. It doesn't do that anymore with the new radiator.
Tom, @3:23... You removed that center panel..! My 2000 ZX7 has tabs on the lower back part of that panel... You must have cut the tabs off...?
I think mine does too, I’ll have to check. It was a struggle to take off carefully I remember that!
@@tomsworkshopprojects Hi Tom, Thanks for your response! I'm trying to figure out how to get to the back bolts holding the grab rails to the seat subframe!? I don't want to break any of the tabs!!! How did you do it...? Thanks!
What is the brand of the motorcycle lift you use?
It’s the Skylift by Abba Stands 👍🏻
What is the Yamaha in the back ?
1994 FZR1000 EXUP - I’ve got a playlist of that being restored too 👍🏻
I bought it new at the end of 92 .... I think it was the J2 or sumthin along dat line
Did you ever get that 9 inch pen?
😂 I love when people notice the silly little jokes I put in these
hello I am French 🇫🇷 I have exactly the same bike can you give me the reference of the central stand (the link) for zx7r by the way I love your videos I'm on episode 4 for now
Hi, welcome. Thanks for the nice comment. Is this the stand info you were looking for? www.cmsnl.com/kawasaki-zx750p2-ninja-zx7r-1997-europe-uk-fr-nl-ar-fg-gr-it-nr-sd-sp-st_model12924/partslist/F2190.html
I'm looking for the support you have in episode 1 to lift both wheels at once, not the side stand, I'm sorry, the correction and translation must not be exceptional
Ah, I understand. Here is the supplier I used: www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/abba-sky-lift-malskylift/
thank you very much for the links it's much more expensive than the others but for quality there is no choice thanks again . if you take a tour in France I would be delighted to welcome you
@@MrSylvaindu53 It is, but a worthy investment for projects like this. Thank you, I’ll definitely be coming to France when it’s done ✅
Great to see. Hopefully gives me inspiration to get my old girl stripped and treat her to a couple of classic race meets next year. They are so over engineered it is beyond belief but my god they are something else aren't they?
Nice! Haha, yeah in my mind I’ve already got the picture of me hanging off this thing round a track, keeping me going!
cool😎
Replace some of your screws so you can take your fairings off with one tool
Good idea 👍🏻 cheers!
@@tomsworkshopprojects hell yeah brother I still have a bunch of 1995. Plastics and fenders pretty much whole body kits. Sweet looking bike I always wanted to take like a ZX-6R or something and try to fit all the 1995 ZX7 plastics on that thing good but what what what what what what what what what.
I think I'm going to going to sacrifice my ZX10 and put all the 1995 zx7r plastics on it.
If it was me?? I’d replace everything that needed replaced. The end. To me 2 big things on a bike : Engine/ trans. Those are money holes!!! Taking it all apart I agree with. Take a look!! Believe me I’ve seen a lot. PS….. I’m a bike mechanic
Cheers Joe, appreciate the tips! Keep em coming! Currently inside the crankcase and measuring everything.
I always ignore the dreaded summoning, use a drill and you can always say " didnt hear you kicking the garage door, i had a drill in my hand babes".....works 80% of the time
Haha! Yeah there's a few good techniques for squeezing out another few minutes or 40!
Nice video series on the ninja by the way im realy enjoying the 90s stuff at the moment! But then i am an original hornet fan/owner so there might be a bit of bias in it
nice
And to think that just 25 minutes ago it was in full working order!
I wish putting it back together would be as quick (and cheap) 😂
it appears to be easyer to disasamble a car than a bike
😂 I’ve only ever disassembled a series 3 Land Rover, which was indeed simpler than this!
You have to ditch that black screen ,no half decent rider would have that in.
Yeah I’m not a fan either. If I can find a decent priced clear one, I’ll try and do that.
Not as pretty as an 89 with the tank hoses and the round headlights.
H1 in the green/white/blue is arguably the prettiest, that would be a dream project for sure 👌🏼
