We Trapped An ABSOLUTE MONSTER of a Hawk! (The Biggest Red-Tailed Hawk In My 19 Years of Falconry!)
To me, a "big" Red-Tailed Hawk is 43-45 ounces (1219-1275 grams). After today, "big" has been re-defined in my vocabulary. You have to see this one! 💥

The Highs and Lows of Falconry (The Plan For Scarlett / And a GIANT Blue Catfish!)

Not every hawk we take from the wild is a perfect fit for falconry. Most times we don't find this out until we are well into training and hunting with the hawk. There are a lot of Pro's with Scarlett, but there are also Con's. I fished our final Ohio kayak catfish tournament and landed a TANK! Check out the 2nd half of the video where I land this brute! I started seeing a decline in Scarlett's health, so I rushed her to the Veterinarian. It was an expensive vet bill, but well worth it! The Hunt From HELL! (I Can't Find My Hawk)

Falconers sometimes use telemetry to find their hawk when they get separated. In my experience, I've only had to track a hawk down 100-200 yards. Today, a haggard (adult) Red-Tailed Hawk ran my hawk off, and she got up into a thermal and traveled an unknown distance - much further than our telemetry is rated to. At this time, I'm still looking for her, and also hoping for a phone call or email ...

Fishing Against Some of The BEST Kayak Catfishermen in the COUNTRY!
Thats really cool!
Very!
This one is going to be a keeper!!!
I think so!
Nice bird, and thanks, it’s been quite a journey to get this far and I’ve been frustrated and discouraged but I’ve made contact with a falconer who has agreed to sponsor me and is excited to do it, we plan to trap my first bird before Christmas, like you I would have preferred a younger bird but I’m so glad it’s coming together and glad I’ve got folks like y’all . Yes we say y’all . Thanks
Yeah I hear that. Definitely ups and downs in this sport. I hope y'all find a giant! Good luck!
George and Falconer here love your contact me and my wife both fly big girls 50 and 52 ounce. they have drawbacks, they can carry easier and farther but you gotta love them big toes
Oh wow yeah those are biggins! We'll see how she turns out, so far she's manning down real well. Thanks for watching!
@@FinsandTalons we rarely get rabbits down hereabout 10 to 1 so big toes are important for gray squirrels
Oh man that’s a big girl. As far as females I’ve flown 3 that were trapped hog fat at 50+ and a couple that were trapped sharp between 40-42 oz. All of these birds regardless hunted between 40-43 oz their first seasons. The sharp ones were just in the field earlier haha
Those are nice sized birds - that's heavier than the Red Tails I usually trap and hunt with. This girl hopped to the glove 4 times today at 58 oz 😳.
@ Monster. Hard to imagine her flying under 3 lbs. Everything’s gonna be on that bird’s menu! Congrats!
Nice Catch
Thanks Brian!
Congrats Brandon!!
Thank you! Super excited!
Where is this ?
This hawk was trapped in Delaware County, OH.
@FinsandTalons thank you for your reply. Take care of this beautiful animal and respect the nature. The World needs wild predators like hawks , falcon and eagles.
More Kestrels!
I'm going to try to get more video of them! They are fun little birds!
Thank goodness Jeb is back. He adds so much to the channel!
I wasn't sure if I should keep Jeb around, but he's doing alright.😂
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing. Was curious how you fashioned the camera to your trap. I’ve plugged and play but cannot get it right. Was also wondering if you think mouse color makes a difference? Cheers!
Thanks Joseph! I use a GoPro clamp. I tighten that down on the corner of the trap and then used 2 heavier zip ties to make it real secure. My camera is a DJI Action 4, and they are compatible with the GoPro camera mounts. I think the color of mice matter with some birds, and some don't care. If I had the option, I would go with anything but white. Though, sometimes white is the only thing I can get at times.
New to your channel. Looking forward to seeing your progress
Welcome aboard! I have a good feeling about this hawk.
Hopefully she’s the one! Start thinking BIG bird names
For sure!!! 🔥
Lovely girl. Gotta be Big Bertha?
That’s a monster. Had the red tail here a couple weeks ago trying to get the squirrel in my tree. It was hysterical. The poor squirrel was looking up at the hawk and down at my Siberian husky waiting for it. The hawk wasn’t even phased we were sitting out there watching with my kids playing. Can’t wait to see this beast hounding squirrels when she’s ready.
Haaa that's funny. Absolutely....I'm ready for it!
Congrats she’s going to be a Hunter for sure
Thanks Tom! I think she's going to hit game like a freight train!
Safe an fun adventures ! Edit * that’s odd I had typed a whole comment ( not just everything before edit . What a bird , awesome catch ! If your ever in need of trapping another , there are some hawks near yellowbud ohio .
Ok I will add that to the list for next season. Even if I keep my current bird for next season, I'll still trap and release hawks. Thanks!
Holy smokes she’s a small eagle! 👍 I’m curious to see what her hunting weight will be. Look forward to the videos to come!
That's what I've been saying, is she's a small eagle! 😂 I also am curious to see what her hunting weight will be. She's been eating on the glove at 57.5 oz. We will see.
Congratulations and good luck!
Thanks Scott!
Wow what an awesome bird I hope she the one. Good luck..
I really hope so! I have a good feeling about her. Thanks Ken!
congrats brother
@@MushMaine Thank you sir! 🫡
Wow what a monster!
I've never seen anything like it! 😂
@ I haven’t either she ought to be a beast with that food drive. How many grams is that? My biggest red tail was 1200 g trap weight and hunted at 1120. Which isn’t a huge bird.
Awesome, respect your tenacity!
Thanks! It's been a rollercoaster of a season.
What a chunk!!! Everytime I watch your videos I wish we had passage take here in the UK, such an incredible form of falconry (not that our captive bred birds aren't incredible but it's so different.) Hope to see her in action soon, and I'm excited to see what her hunting weight will be
It would definitely take a lot of fun out of the sport if we couldn't trap here. Several falconers get permits to trap just for the fun of it. Yeah the chest on this bird is like a bowling ball!
Skibity rizz gyatt rizzler
why the rubber workout matts?
@@MushMaine To keep her talons sharp. Anytime I put her on a perch where her feet can make contact with the ground, I put either those mats down or a couple layers of carpet padding down. The dirt and rock will dull their talons quick. Sharp talons are important with rabbit hunting, but definitely important with squirrel hunting. You don't want the squirrels turning in the hawk's feet and biting the hawk.
@@FinsandTalons i didnt realize the soil could dull their talons. Thanks!
@MushMaine Yessir!
Ok ok I’ll take her ;p
All yours buddy! Lol.
Man that’s too bad. She’s sooo beautiful and HUGE
There's definitely bigger ones out there. But yeah I was happy with her size. A lot of things I liked about her. She was easy to house in the mews and giant hood. Took the hood fairly well. Never aggressive towards me. Transferred well. Good size. Almost checked all the boxes 😑.
@@FinsandTalons I hope my RT next season is eager to hunt- because if she is like Scarlot I will just assume it is my poor training
@MushMaine She hunts, she's just not into people lol. It happens. Don't know til you start hunting with them.
@@FinsandTalons I dont think I will be doing a lot of "group hunts" There are only a handful of falconers in the entire state (and we are a big state). My sponsor lives 2 hours away and is the closest. So a bird that doesnt like crowds would probably be ok for me
@MushMaine Yeah I forgot you said your fellow falconers are pretty far away. You still may want to take friends and family out. Having someone around during training really helps, not always, but does help.
Fish paid for half the vet bill!😉 Sorry your bird isn't working out tho. What model Old Towne is that?
That was our joke too about winning that 😂. That's a Sportsman Autopilot 136.
Man I’ve had birds like that too, I get it. My apprentice had a bird like that also. We started with 2 people and recalling a lot back and forth between them. Added a couple more people, etc. Eventually worked out. But yeah in the beginning they’d either sit or bump. Annoying
@@femme_falconer Yeah, she's even weird with me when it's just us. Tough decision - do you spend the rest of the season trying to work it out and hope it works out, or trap another one and hope that works with the next one. This sport can make you crazy! 😂. This is the 2nd bird I've had like this out of a dozen birds.
@@FinsandTalons Well they’re a dime a dozen haha no issue with rolling the dice on another. What’s ur season?
@femme_falconer Our trapping season is August 1st to March 1st.
@@FinsandTalons oh sorry. Meant hunting season in your parts
@@femme_falconer Hunting season is September 1st to March 10th for everything but waterfowl. Waterfowl is kinda weird, the seasons come and go and there's different zones in the state for it.
I may have missed it but what was the high vet bill for ?
@@camwalk05 When I trapped her and was manning, I noticed she was short of breath and weak. The vet had to run several tests, x rays on her lungs, and medication. She was overloaded with internal parasites. There were so many roundworms in her body, they were in her castings.
Oh wow, I’ve been lucky with my birds so far just had to do a short run of meds for parasites and a few worms
@camwalk05 First time it's happened to me. Only other time in 19 years was from a squirrel bite.
Damn you do all this fishing and still can’t catch a bigger blue than me
@@andrewcsizmadia6868 I can't beat you in everything Drew. You would stop fishing with me.
I received my F&T tee and stickers last week. They look great.
@@randypittillo7272 Thanks for the support Randy! Glad you like them!
Sorry she hasn't worked out for you, she's a nice looking, big girl! She's the same weight as my Jael.
@@jeffreyporter4678 Thanks, yeah I was hoping she would but that's how it is sometimes. How's your bird doing?
She's doing great! I couldn't be happier with her. She hasn't had the greatest hunting success yet, but that's on me, I just haven't been able to move game for her besides one vole. I recently received permission to hunt a property that should be full of bunnies. I'm looking for a good squirrel spot too. Unfortunately in eastern Massachusetts open spaces where hunting is allowed are sparse, but I am finding good spots close enough to home so I can take her out after work before it gets dark. Right now we're on a two week "hiatus" because they close all other hunting during deer shotgun season. We'll be at it again on the 16th, I'll let you know how we make out. I hope you find the right bird!
She will pick up on it eventually, as you keep giving her opportunities. Good luck this season and keep us updated!
It’s too bad she wouldn’t warm up- im a first year apprentice and as I’m learning it’s all trial and error. Best of luck on your next trapping and next bird, I’ll be here to watch the videos! 👍
@@Tonyhawkin Thanks Tony. Yeah it's hard to say how they turn out until we get them out there hunting with us. Good luck this season!

Awesome! Thank you!

Awesome group!
Ok was not asking for sponsor up there, I thought someone down here would see this post.
Yes I'm just saying you may want to attend a state club meet or picnic near you or a surrounding state.
congratulations 🎊 she beautiful, hopefully one day I can do the same it would be my fist time
Thank you! It's so rewarding!
@FinsandTalons what would you recommend? soon to be first timer to catch red tail hawk?
Well I’ve tried, probably a Facebook thing. No luck on they’re website. My number is in state system, I’ve gotten one call from a guy three hundred miles south of me, I’m buying vehicle today in case I have to travel to sponsor. Again I was led to believe if I put in the work I would reap the rewards, so far a phone call can’t be made. I pray it’s not a popularity contest, I’ve never won one of those. Frustrated? Kinda.
You'll need to go to a state club meet / picnic and network with falconers. Or the NAFA meet. No one here in Ohio would sponsor someone over the phone or through FB.
I need a sponsor, MDWFP has my info.12/3/24 north central Mississippi. Seriously
Have you reached out to your state club?
GO SCARLET!
I see you got some tims

@@FinsandTalons thats when you know youre close to Canada
I like American Kestrels but there are too many other birds of prey that want to eat them. I've had Red-tails go after my kestrels and a Cooper's hawk killed my last kestrel while field hawking. I fly Red-tails now and unfortunately will never fly another kestrel.
Oh wow. I have not heard of that happening to any falconers around me, but could see it happening. If you watch closely in this video, there's a Cooper's following Scarlett when she was going after that rabbit.
American Kestrels are my favorite raptors.
They are very interesting birds! I wouldn't be opposed to getting another one some day, especially to hunt sparrows and starlings in the off season for the Red-Tails.
I didn't know about group hunting! Great hunt and camera work!
Thanks Scott! It was a lot of fun!
Wow that video was so amazing looks like so much fun. Your bird is so beautiful..
Thanks Ken! It was fun filming it.
She’s a beautiful bird! Happy hawking man!
Thanks Tony, you as well!
What a stoop! Scarlett is going to be one epic hawk. And it was very cool to see a kestrel on voles, usually you only see people hunting birds with them. Makes me want to go vole or mouse hunting with a Eurasian Kestrel at some point in the future. Those small rodents are just as worthy quarry as anything else!
It's definitely a quarry to keep the Kestrels busy when the sparrows and starlings move out!
Glad to see Scarlett doing better. Nothing better than falconry and fishing. I usually fish during the molt. I like to fly fish during the spring and catfish during the summer
@@mixedup72 Absolutely! What state do you fly fish in?
